Love this place! Had a prime rib debacle on Christmas Day and my family pivoted to Indian takeout. I was so thankful they were open, had food ready quickly (no preorder needed) and were pleasant! I love mulligatawny soup and they do it perfectly. My family also shared onion and jalapeño cheese naan, falafel, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer and lamb Rogan Josh. Everything was chefs kiss. Ordered this as a delivery so I can't comment on the service or ambiance of the restaurant. The food however was alright, as someone who eats Indian food pretty regularly this was one of the less flavorful chicken tikki masala dishes I've tried. It had no spice (which is fine although there was no option to make it spicy), but the sauce itself was a little lacking. I've always liked Indian food and Shalimar is among the best. The buffet lunches are consistently delicious. I was really hungry and on my way to do some grocery shopping at Hannaford Plaza in Delmar. You know that saying about not shopping for groceries on an empty stomach? I decided not to give into that. So I took myself to lunch at Shalimar at the opposite end of the plaza. The restaurant looks very much as I remember it. Clean and comfortable.I haven't been there in a couple of years. I was greeted by a host. It is a buffet so I grabbed a plate and helped myself. There were a lot of great spicy vegan dishes. It wasn't until I reached the end that I realized there were a number of chicken dishes, including tandoori, which I love. I took one piece of chicken from each. A drumstick or a wing. My plate looked quite full. I ate almost everything except I couldn't finish the tandoori drumstick nor the piece of chicken korma. I also had bit of leftover flatbread known as naan. I didn't know you weren't supposed to take leftovers with you at Shalimar but the host said he would give me a container for my food just this once. I certainly didn't want to waste food. The buffet came out to just over $14 and I left a tip. Then, I went to go grocery shopping after a very satisfying meal. read more

My son and I just had our first and last Shalimar takeout experience. We ordered the Lamb Rogan Josh, Shrimp Korma and garlic naan. The lamb was all fat chunks and the sauce was watery and tasteless. The Shrimp Korma was also disappointedly bland. We think the naan was actually pita bread, which was soggy by the time I got home. Total waste of $50. read more

I needed to update my review as I've ordered take out from Shalimar several more times and I've been consistently impressed. The delivery is minimally on time but usually early. My wife likes mild food; I like very spicy food. Typically Shalimar gets the two right, but I've had some experiences when my vindaloo is disappointing and I need to top it with my own crushed red pepper. Their samosas are giant and while not cheap are fair for the work that goes into their preparation. I live somewhat closer to Taj, but they've jacked their prices, and frankly the order more often arrived late, and often required prompting with calls to the restaurant. While I've always liked orders from Taj, the food from Shalimar is at least as good and the delivery is much more dependable. read more

Staff is extremely rude and the buffet is overpriced if you are taking it to go. Better value for a sit down meal. Definitely some of the worst Indian food in the region. I was in the plaza where this Shalimar is at lunchtime, so I decided it was an opportunity to try their lunch buffet. If you are vegetarian or vegan, I think you will particularly enjoy the buffet, as it has a lot of meatless dishes, and typically a few chicken dishes. I did find the buffet to be a bit inconsistent. Many of the dishes were lukewarm. When I arrived, there were no pakoras or naan available. Pakoras came out after about 5 minutes, and these were hot, crispy, and delicious. Naan came out about 5 minutes after that. The chicken in the chicken tikka masala was reasonably tender, but the sauce it was in was more of an orange-brown than the red to which one usually sees. The tandoori chicken was also less bright-red than expected. The chili chicken dish was the way to go today, delicious and spicy. I felt some of the vegetable dishes were also milder than expected, perhaps it is representative of what the customers desire. A sign by the cashier encourages cash payment, but I do not know if they charge extra for payment by credit card. read more

I've eaten at Shalimar several times over the last few months (many, many times over the past decade) and the quality has gone down drastically. Twice, the fried pakora was obviously not fresh and the price for the buffet just keeps increasing. The wait staff was very rude. I told the waiter that my lunch mate was on her way in and would like to order a soda but he just turned away and didn't come back for a few minutes. My main complaint is about the food though. So sad to see Shalimar in decline. I'll be ordering from neighboring Indian restaurants in the future. read more

Just sat down to my first buffet here. I've ordered takeout quite a few times and have always been pleased. They even delivered to me while it was really snowing once, and I apologized for not noticing how bad the weather was and asking for delivery but they were super kind and still on time. The buffet has a lot of great choices, especially for vegetarians looking for different flavors! Today on the buffet I loved the vegetable jalfrezi and I like that they include a lot of condiments like onion relish and tamarind sauce, etc. For take out, I usually get chicken curry, or my favorite, Chana masala. I would recommend getting a funky naan with your meal, like an onion stuffed one, to shake it up from plain (but either way you can't go wrong). This is the best Indian food in the area! I love this place and they truly never miss. I ordered the Tikka Masala, Naan, Chicken Tandoori, Chili Chicken, and Spinach/Lentils. It all came out in a reasonable timing and it was all fresh, warm, and so so tasty. I especially like the serving size. They serve the lunch special in individual bowls, but when you put it on your plate it is at least 2 plate fulls. I have been coming here for 7 years now and I can't believe this is my first time finally writing a review. I must also note the cleanliness, and customer service. We are greeted so nicely by the sweet man who works here every time and he is more than happy to tell us about the food, explain everything to us, and more. This review is based on the Lunch Buffet. Shalimar Restaurant opened its newest location in the Delaware Plaza next door to Subway. This restaurant serves Indian and Pakistani cuisine and they advertise a coupon special for buy 1 dinner get the second helf price on their takeout menus. I believe that deal is dine-in only Mon-Tues-Wed evenings. There's also a Lunch Buffet ($7.99 plus tax) offered 11:30AM-2:30PM and drinks are included in the buffet price (Coke fountain drinks or iced tea). I arrive here around 11:45 AM and the place has a couple tables of customers already eating. There was one guy running the front of the house, seating diners, bringing out drinks, clearing dishes, and cashing folks out. Everyone arriving here got the buffet. The dining room is cozy relaxed atmosphere with the cashier/takeout counter in back, nice decor & articles/certificates on the walls, and rows of tables covered in yellow table cloths (plate glass dining surface). I was seated close to the buffet and started immediately. The buffet had around 12 main dishes, plus salad, raita, and sauces. Some of the items on the buffet included tandoori chicken, vegetable pakoras, vegetable korma, chana chat (cold chickpea salad), chicken tikka masala, chicken do piazza, green beans, vegetable rice, vegetable biryani, dal makhani (lentils), warm naan, and kheer for dessert. I made a few trips to the buffet trying out each item. The star of the show was the Chicken Tikka Masala, which was delicious and had very tender chicken. The rice dishes and the vegetarian dishes were decent, not too spicy. However, I did not care for the kheer (rice pudding) which was too thick and "Kozy-Shack like" and not milky and refreshing like the great rice puddings I've had at other Indian restaurants (mostly in the Greater Boston/Southern NH area). The place started to get busy fairly quickly after I arrived. The service was very good, dishes were always cleared when I returned from the buffet and I was given a free refill on the Diet Coke. This was my first time experiencing Indian food. I decided to try Shalimar because I have heard a lot great things about this establishment . As a pescatarian they do offer a lot of variety and prices are affordable. I decided to order palak paneer which is spinach with cheese and pieces of tofu also came with rice. The rice I wasn't a fan of I think for me it was the type of grain of rice. The spinach and cheese was really good and I got a good amount that lasted for two days. I also decided on a 2 appetizers naan bread and a vegetable puff. The naan bread was nice and warm and tasty. The puff it was a little too greasy for me and I really taste the vegetables. I would definitely try this restaurant again and most likely try the seafood. read more

Very mediocre Indian food. Malai kofta, saag paneer, and mattar paneer are drowning in cream. Unappetizing in appearance and almost inedible because the gravy is 95% cream and it's flavorless. Aloo paratha isn't a paratha stuffed with potatoes like it should be, rather it's potatoes placed on top of a paratha and folded in half. Giving three stars because my boyfriend has ordered their plain curries and chicken vindaloo with naan which were good -- spicy and flavorful. I guess the dishes are a hit or miss. Wish the vegetarian ones were better. I've ordered from shalimar three times hoping my orders were just a one off and I was disappointed every time. read more

My review is for the buffet only. There are hardly any non-veg items (only 3) in the buffet and still the buffet price is $7.99 which is little expensive compared to other Indian buffet restaurants in the area. I find all the items in the buffet are just ok but not tasty. No fruits and only one dessert in the buffet. Most of the other Indian restaurants have many non-veg, veg items, fruits and atleast 2 desserts in the buffet for $6.99 price. Bottom line: I will not go back for the buffet. read more

The food here is generally very good. I've come for dinner and the lunch buffet on a number of occasions. My family and I had lunch at Shalimar the day after Thanksgiving to give ourselves a break from all the turkey. It was quite busy so the chafing dishes were somewhat on the empty side, but they were tended to often and I was not disappointed. The chicken tikka masala was not good that day, though - the meat had an odd, rubbery texture. We used a coupon (it was good for up to 4 people) so it was a good deal. The atmosphere is not great (it needs some updating, and probably a good scrub), and they do not offer alcoholic beverages (although I believe you can bring your own wine and pay a corkage fee?) but overall the service and quality/variety of food is enough to keep us coming back. read more

I'm no expert on the cuisine, but I know what I like --- and I liked Shalimar. Finally had dinner there recently, after passing it by on many nights to head for Hidden Cafe. It's a humble little spot tucked in among the dollar stores and cell phone dealers, but I found the food to be great. Start with some appetizers for your table; don't be shy because they're small and inexpensive. Then I'd recommend you order with the whole party in mind and share, Chinese restaurant style. Chose a mix of beef, chicken, and vegetable dishes and you'll have yourself a nice little feast. By the way, Shalimar does not serve alcohol, but you're welcome to bring in a bottle of wine. They'll provide a corkscrew, unless you're like me and go for the twist-off variety. I suppose you could probably bring in some beers, too. read more

I ate at Shalimar on the way to Boston. Definitely a good choice! I have been a fan of Indian food for quite some time and particularly like going to the weekday lunch buffets. The Shalimar website has 'best of' several years in a row, which I generally pay little attention to. I am not familiar with the area or competition, therefore I am not sure what grounds they are winning on. To my surprise they definitely lived up to their quoted 'best of' standards. The lunch buffet was terrific. Many choices which seem to be quite authentic. Unlike many buffets they even offered a few spicier fares. I don't quite remember everything I ate, but know I enjoyed all of it. My personal favorite was their coconut naan. For kheer fans out there, you will definitely enjoy it at Shalimar.
