While another customer (Gyros) and I waited for our orders at 11:30 am (I arrived early), the owner served us a sample of their Kheer after asking us if we had a milk allergy. This traditional Indian Rice dessert was far superior in flavor and texture to what I have eaten at other local restaurants that serve it. (Kheer is a creamy, traditional dessert made by simmering rice with whole milk, sugar, and aromatics like cardamom and saffron.) It looked really liquidy but after stiring it with a spoon, it thickened up. The flavor was fantastic! The pita they served with it was warm too. They brought all of the entrees out together and a few minutes later, one of the employees came by with the Haleem Chicken, which he said was a new menu item that he wanted us to try on the house. It was stewed chicken with lentils and spices. Everything was absolutely delicious and had such great flavor. We couldn't pick a favorite. Koshari is kind of an elevated garbage plate, lots of good things mixed together, heavy on the carbs with a spicy tomato sauce, a meal by itself. The sampler plate delivers a huge amount of food for currently $12. Everything has a little something extra that makes it special; the falafel is flavored with onion and herbs and is perfectly fried to a crisp shell with a moist interior; the stuff grape leaves are steamed before serving and have some minty accents; even the pitas get brushed with oil and spices, toasted and cut into bite size pieces before they are tucked away in the container. There is a lunch room for the office workers across the hall if you care to eat in while the food is piping hot, but it nicely survived my drive back to Saratoga. There are some token vegetables that resemble a kind of salad on the side, so you can pretend this is a balanced meal. But they do help to break up the heaviness of it all, which is important. And on top of its deliciousness, this is a value to boot. Personally, the lamb doesn't quite do it for me, since it's more of a ground lamb product than whole pieces of meat. But when you are a place that is building a reputation on value, ground lamb product isn't a deal breaker. It just helps to know that going in. The hard thing for me now is coming to Troy Kitchen and getting anything but the chicken over rice. How has this place not been reviewed on Yelp yet? Maybe it was because they didn't have a listing. But I haven't met anyone yet who has tried this stall and not loved it. Maybe they haven't loved the lingering taste of garlic. Amateurs.
