Simply amazing and thank you Steve Barnes for highlighting this special place which is hidden from the outside world within the NT Bank office building directly across the street from Trader Joe on Wolf Rd. There are standard breakfast and lunch items for the office workers, but of course we went straight for the Egyptian dishes. Had the Koshari which is "the national dish of Egypt" (the very friendly proprietors kept reminding me that the food was better "because we are Egyptian" and I am not going to argue) and the sampler platter. Koshari is kind of an elevated garbage plate, lots of good things mixed together, heavy on the carbs with a spicy tomato sauce, a meal by itself. The sampler plate delivers a huge amount of food for currently $12. Everything has a little something extra that makes it special; the falafel is flavored with onion and herbs and is perfectly fried to a crisp shell with a moist interior; the stuff grape leaves are steamed before serving and have some minty accents; even the pitas get brushed with oil and spices, toasted and cut into bite size pieces before they are tucked away in the container. There is a lunch room for the office workers across the hall if you care to eat in while the food is piping hot, but it nicely survived my drive back to Saratoga. A hidden gem...literally! Located on the first floor in the rear of a huge office building off Wolf Road with a tiny little sign. This is truly hidden and a gem. The Mom and Pop café serves up delicious Mediterranean and Egyptian delights including salads, wraps, breakfast sandwiches, hummus, falafel, and more! You order at the counter and then there's some seating across the hall, which gets pretty busy during the week as the office workers stop down to take their lunch. Stopped by around 1:30 pm missing the crush. I had homemade pita bread with feta cheese and hummus that was amazing. Others had the roast beef sandwich, a chicken dish with cream and huge falafels. Everybody enjoyed their meals! The owners are fabulous and accommodating, and we even bought some honey on our way out the door. What a cute and hidden find! It's in a run of the mill office building on Wolf Road but anyone can go in. I only knew about it because I had read a review about it on the Times Union. There were 2 people working, I'm guessing husband and wife, and they were so friendly. The prices are so reasonable that I ordered 3 things for my husband and I to share. We got a beef gyro with fries, a large garden salad with gyro meat and a sampler platter, which came with 4 stuffed grape leaves (meat or not), 2 falafel (spicy or not), a garden and a feta salad and a scoop or hummus with pita bread. Have not been here for couple years. This time I brought my daughter. She commented on how she might not have found it without my direction because it is tucked away in an office building. It is across from Trader Joe's on Wolf Road in Colonie. Turned out, she loved the food and the attentive serve of the great Egyptian couple who own the cafe and cook. The cafe is a gem, and I wish I lived closer to go weekly. The prices are so low for the quality and quantity of food served. I had the # 4 grilled chicken feta platter. Homemade brown rice + cranberries, raisins, and almonds. Wine marinated grilled chicken was topped with tzatziki sauce and the Bon Apetit specialty feta cheese mix. It was served with wedges of warm pita. Yum. The chicken was moist and tender. The specialty cheese mix is delicious, outstanding!!! I remember it well from previous lunches. It was such a generous portion that I brought half home. My daughter had the beef Gyro wrap with pita, macaroni salad, and the specialty cheese mix. She also took half home. We enjoyed our lunches very much and the excellent service of the cafe owners who were genuinely pleased to have us enjoy their food. After you order, the couple cooks in front of you. While they are preparing your food, they send you off to a quiet room with tables across the hall. The owner delivered the food to our table. Yesterday my wife and I ate here. The meal was great- good food, reasonable prices and had a personal short conversation with the very hard working owners. I visit this place about once a month or two and always leave with a great feeling of connection and community. This place probably has been around many years with little or no changes. You can see the entire operation and the owners completely trust the customers as just about everything to buy is on the customer side of the counter except for the prepared food. Yesterday, I really looked at the menu as I have only ordered the beef gyro and seasoned French Fries combo and noticed they have other sandwiches which I will need to explore such as BLTs and Rueben's. The owners have earned the respect and admiration of thier very loyal customer base, myself included, because of thier hustle and commitment to customer service. The owners are probably in their seventies and they prepare food very traditionally using various pots, ovens and grills. As an example, my gyro was prepared by cutting off some chunks from a rotating spit of meat and then grilling it. The wrap- thinner than most pitas- was warmed and slightly toasted on the grill. The gyro was stuffed with lettuce, tomatoes and onions that would have been previously chopped, meat and a generous amount of white yogurt sauce. It was then wrapped in cellophane and cut in half where more white sauce was added to the edges and then wrapped in aluminum foil and placed in a styrofoam to go box with the fries that also went through several steps to be fried, cooked and then tossed in a herb and spice mixture to season the fries. My point is that these extra steps take time but they really make a huge difference in the quality of the food. The wait is longer than most places but the hot generous sandwich is worth the wait. Plus the cost is very reasonable under ten dollars. This place is worth going to, just to slow down and enjoy the moment, look at the relationships that have been built by these owners and their neighbors while getting a good meal. This place and the owners are very special. I really feel blessed every time I am lucky enough to visit. This is food wrapped in nostalgia and community. read more

Lovely little place inside an office building. I finally had an afternoon off to go out for lunch so jumped at the chance to try this place and was glad I did. I had a falafel wrap. My husband got the Koshary special. The falafel took time to make as they literally made and fried it right then (not pre-made patties etc). The Koshary was ready quickly as it was all items that has been prepared but needed assembling and heating. The Koshary is amazing and huge. He didn't even eat it all. Great flavors with that tomato sauce drizzled on top. The sauce makes it all come together honestly. My falafel was great - very large flavorful green patties inside a wafer thin wrap. They asked me what I wanted inside before wrapping it up. Very flavorful. Could only eat half of it. This is a great spot - just in a unique spot. My favorite sandwich to try to check out a place is the Buffalo Chicken Wrap. The chicken appears to have been marinaded in a lemony sauce before it is cooked and hot sauce is added. The sandwich is also grilled to heat up all ingredients. SO selected a Falafel Platter, which includes (4) Falafel, (2) Hummus, Baba Ghanoj, Side salad, Bon Appetit specialty feta cheese mix. After seeing his beautiful lunch, I was sorry I just got a wrap. While it was delicious, seeing the Falafel Platter made me envious. We have an Egyptian cafe in Albany? We have an Egyptian cafe in Albany! Of course you haven't heard of it. While Bon Appetit Cafe may be on Wolf Road, they don't have a sign. They aren't visible from the street. Heck, they aren't even visible from the parking lot in the back of the building. Which, incidentally, is where you need to enter to experience this hidden gem. And when you get there, it doesn't look like much. It's almost as if a home kitchen, a food truck, and a school cafeteria all got smashed into one small florescent tube lit room. It could be a setting for a Sartre play. But you aren't here for the setting. You are here for the national dish of Egypt, a simple but delicious concoction called Koshari. And maybe, if you played your cards right, you are also here for the baba ghanoj. Koshari is a comforting and wholesome blend of brown rice and lentils, garnished with elbow macaroni and chickpeas, topped with crispy fried onions, and served with a slightly spicy tomato sauce to pour on top of the whole thing. It's truly fantastic. The portion served would be enough for two meals at least, and costs just under $7. Actually, I'm kind of curious to order this to go, and see just how many meals I can make out of it. Brown rice and lentils is seriously filling stuff. I do wish BAC had more throughput of this dish that they could keep the rice and lentils warm. Instead they are pulled from the refrigerator and reheated in the microwave to order. But that is just a small ding. Don't think for a second they aren't making things from scratch or that they don't care about quality. Let me tell you the story of the Baba Ghanoj. It's listed as a side order on the menu, but there is also a warning that it needs to be preordered by 9:30am! So naturally I called ahead. And while this was not the smokey charred baba that I make at home, it was rich with tahini, seasoned with cumin, and brightened with freshly chopped parsley. When I realized it didn't come with pita wedges, I asked for some on the side. Now, I would have been perfectly happy for a cold pita out of the bag to help mop up this garlicky spread. But that's not how the $1 side of pita wedges is served. They are not only warmed, but also topped with za'atar. Even better. Sure, if you want to eat there, you have to eat in an odd little room across the hall with small round tables packed together so tightly, it's challenging to snake your way into a chair. But fortunately, for our sakes, most people seemed to take their lunches back to their desks. I was reluctant to try the falafel at first, because for me if it's not fried to order, it's hardly worth eating. And I'm eager to return and try the stuffed grape leaves too. They have both vegetarian and beef versions available. The menu is short. And most of it is classic American lunch counter fare. It's hard to recommend for someone to make the trek down to the parking lot of a random office building for a good and reasonably priced egg sandwich. However, Koshari is a different thing entirely. Come on down and get the Egyptian food you never knew you were missing. read more

I have been going there and a good customer for years. The food is still good, but it seems like as far as I am concerned as a customer the respect for this good customer has waned. It's not like I haven't told him about my concerns before. That is a shame, because I used to go over there on a daily basis for breakfast or lunch. In recent visits it seemed like three like I would be less of a priority, as the order would not be ready when I stopped over to pick it up. Even in previous months, I'd wind up getting items added on my sandwich that I didn't request. I know mistakes happen, I get it. But I think the end all for me was the increasingly marked rudeness from the man that works there. Imagine calling to place an order for pick up and having the person on the other end of the phone say, just speak! , Instead of, what would you like? I don't know, it seems kind of rude to me, and not the type of behavior I would associate with a business that treats the customer with dignity and respect. There are plenty other places that have good food and truly value a customers continued business. I will always give my money to the people that treat me well and with good food to boot! This is a divie kitchen type place located in an office building across from trader Joes on Wolf road. If you come in from the front of the building you need to walk to the right and back of the bank. the smell permeates the entire floor so you can't miss it. It's definitely a family run place there were 2 people behind the counter a man and a woman and then there was a woman sitting in the corner supervising maybe a mother I'm not sure. The woman that took my order had a thick accent but was super friendly and quick to make my food. I ordered a chicken platter based on pictures I had seen online in other people's Yelp reviews. The chicken platter came with chicken breast cubed that looked like it had been boiled or steamed and was a little dried out. A salad which came with romaine lettuce and various vegetable toppings that you could add or take away. I told them I'd take anything but onions so it came with broccoli cabbage carrots Banana peppers and my choice of dressing. It also came with a scoop of what I thought was chicken salad at 1st but after tasting it I found out that it was a feta cheese spread with onions and peppers mixed in; a little bit spicy but quite tasty. It came with a semi stale piece of pita bread and dill tzatziki sauce on top of the chicken. They also gave me their special Egyptian rice which was toasted Brown rice with slivered toasted almonds, cranberries and raisins. It had a slightly bitter aftertaste that kind of helped balance some of the sweetness from the fruit and was quite tasty but I was sad to see them heat it up in the microwave. If you're in the area and looking for a cheap, quick lunch that gives you quantity over quality then I would definitely recommend stopping by and checking this place out. $6.95 portion was quite large, enough for 2 people. read more
