I stopped in at Dosa Grill for a bite before a concert of Indian classical music in the area. This is an upscale restaurant with white tablecloths, a pleasing clean modern interior design with nice lighting and attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff. This restaurant features both North and South Indian cuisine. That's a bit unusual, as they are two distinctly different foods and cultures, which requires two main chefs and preparation areas. I enjoy both cuisines, so I ate a Masala Dosa (mainstay of South Indian fare) at the restaurant, and ordered some North Indian dishes for take out. The Dosa was delicious; a huge slightly crispy fermented lentil/rice crepe packed with delicious potato, onion and spice filling. The requisite two chutneys (tomato and coconut) along with a tasty Sambar dal/sauce came with the dosa. All delicious! The food was well prepared, with the exception of their chicken Manchow soup which was not good at all. I only had two spoonfuls of it, and the waiter removed it from the bill. Nice music played on their system at a low but audible level. When ordering North Indian food at Dosa Grill, the waiter asked about spice levels (mild, medium, or hot) as is done at many South Asian restaurants. I requested medium, but the food was at different levels of heat; some dishes were very hot, some were not hot at all. I will definitely return to Dosa Grill to further explore their extensive menu of Northern and Southern Indian fare. read more

Dosa Grill is a top-notch restaurant. My family and I ate there for my wife's birthday over the weekend. She is originally from New Delhi and she says their Southern Indian food is the absolute best in the area. The food was absolutely delicious. We loved every dish we ordered, and the prices were extremely reasonable. The high quality of their food is equaled by great service. You never have to ask for a thing and their waiters are extremely attentive and anticipate any need you have. Epic Indian lunch buffet & regular menu as well. They do a dinner buffet on Wednesdays nights as well. We had a great Sunday lunch and really enjoyed all the dishes. Service was super attentive. The chai tea was proper. Some of the dishes I liked at the buffet were lamb biryani, dal makhani, paneer, naan, tandoori chicken, butter chicken, salad, and rice pudding. A great choice for Indian take out! The food is always plentiful and flavorful. The food is fresh and the staff is friendly. Only knock was for the first time we ordered via Grubhub - they were extremely busy. Our order wasn't ready for 1 hr after the estimated time. The staff was unbelievably apologetic and gave us free mango lassi for both of us for our inconvenience. The food was so good we put that behind us and ordered again. It didn't disappoint. This is an excellent Indian buffet. Yes, I'm Badu, but their chicken Tikka mandala is in such a flavorful sauce; it's so yummy. They always have a great spread of different options. I love that they have different chutney out and that naan is on the buffet so that you can sop up their delicious sauces with it. A great standout part of the experience is that you receive some dosa from a server during your meal. If I had one ding (and this is my preference), I wish they had Coke rather than Pepsi. Parking is so easy at Dosa Grill thanks to its accessible location in a pleasant strip mall on Western Ave. near SUNY (State University of New York). Also, the restaurant is on the Western Ave. bus line and is easy to reach by bike. I thought the dosa grill was very good. I had the chicken soup. Minar special naan, a shredded tiki herb buttered bread. It was absolutely delicious. I have tried the creamy mushroom and manchow noodle soup. They were OK, spicy and good. The prices were reasonable, and the food was hot, even after I returned to the office. The service was good. I was intrigued by their lunch buffet, as I waited to pick up my order. The Buffet was loaded with various delicious food items. What a great addition to the existing shops by the Western Ave. The lunch buffet is a steal at 9.95. Although they do not offer halal dishes they have plenty flavorful vegetarian dishes so I didn't feel that I was missing the meat. read more

I went for the lunch buffet to sample as much as possible. It was good food. I didn't dislike it. But it wasn't very distinctive. Each flavor seemed to bleed into the next. There were no diverse textures. The food was well-cooked, and nothing was bad, but nothing was notable, either. Big fan of the dinner buffet. Discount for students too makes it an insanely good deal. Most of the dishes are vegetarian. The food is overall delicious with a large variety of traditional South Indian food with some more "westernized" options. I have been looking for a good indian place in albany for over a year and haven't found anything good until I found this place. By far the best I have EVER had. The chicken tika, lamb biryani w garlic naan was the ultimate combo for the most satisfying and flavorful meal I have gotten around here. The service was incredible, they made sure everything was up to our expectations and waters were full while at the same time not being helicopter waiters and giving us space to take in the great food. They were very kind and friendly throughout the entire meal. Not sure why Dosa Grill is getting such good reviews relative to other Indian restaurants in the Albany area. We enjoyed the flavors of the sauces, but the Nan was limp, the samosas were on the chewy side, and the entree was uninspired. The food was OK, but we can do better if we head to Colonie or Delmar. Also, one of the plastic takeout containers was not marked with a recycling code. read more

First time getting takeout was a great experience. Easy to communicate over the phone and specify my order preferences, fast pickup, and email receipt. The chicken tikka masala was very good. I think I've had better in terms of creaminess but this also tasted more "real" than the other Indian places. The lamb biryani was outstanding. The garlic on the naan was plentiful and fresh.
