I stopped in at Dosa Grill for a bite before a concert of Indian classical music in the area. This is an upscale restaurant with white tablecloths, a pleasing clean modern interior design with nice lighting and attentive and knowledgeable waitstaff. This restaurant features both North and South Indian cuisine. That's a bit unusual, as they are two distinctly different foods and cultures, which requires two main chefs and preparation areas. I enjoy both cuisines, so I ate a Masala Dosa (mainstay of South Indian fare) at the restaurant, and ordered some North Indian dishes for take out. The Dosa was delicious; a huge slightly crispy fermented lentil/rice crepe packed with delicious potato, onion and spice filling. The requisite two chutneys (tomato and coconut) along with a tasty Sambar dal/sauce came with the dosa. All delicious! The food was well prepared, with the exception of their chicken Manchow soup which was not good at all. I only had two spoonfuls of it, and the waiter removed it from the bill. Nice music played on their system at a low but audible level. When ordering North Indian food at Dosa Grill, the waiter asked about spice levels (mild, medium, or hot) as is done at many South Asian restaurants. I requested medium, but the food was at different levels of heat; some dishes were very hot, some were not hot at all. I will definitely return to Dosa Grill to further explore their extensive menu of Northern and Southern Indian fare. read more

Epic Indian lunch buffet & regular menu as well. They do a dinner buffet on Wednesdays nights as well. We had a great Sunday lunch and really enjoyed all the dishes. Service was super attentive. The chai tea was proper. Some of the dishes I liked at the buffet were lamb biryani, dal makhani, paneer, naan, tandoori chicken, butter chicken, salad, and rice pudding. I've been wanting to try the dinner buffet. The reviews on here were quite good and being vegetarian sounded like a nice option. By the way, the dinner starts at 5 PM not 4:30 as listed on this website. The staff and service was very kind with good attention both to the patrons and the buffet offerings. Tonight there was saag paneer, Chana masala, a cabbage dish, lo mein ( co-opted from Chinese buffet?!) as well as a soup rice and naan. Everything was fresh, but nothing had real flavor. My favorite was the saag paneer. No dish had any heat. Most of the dishes tasted the same. The lo mein was absolutely terrible. How could you be an Indian buffet and put that on your offering and make it so terrible in addition? And frankly, cabbage dishes aren't anything anyone ever wants to eat. It's close to UAlbany and they have a lunch buffet with a student discount.. I had ordered online (not knowing about the buffet) and picked up my food and ate in the restaurant. Dosa Grill is a top-notch restaurant. My family and I ate there for my wife's birthday over the weekend. She is originally from New Delhi and she says their Southern Indian food is the absolute best in the area. The food was absolutely delicious. We loved every dish we ordered, and the prices were extremely reasonable. The high quality of their food is equaled by great service. You never have to ask for a thing and their waiters are extremely attentive and anticipate any need you have. Only knock was for the first time we ordered via Grubhub - they were extremely busy. Our order wasn't ready for 1 hr after the estimated time. The staff was unbelievably apologetic and gave us free mango lassi for both of us for our inconvenience. The food was so good we put that behind us and ordered again. It didn't disappoint. This is an excellent Indian buffet. Yes, I'm Badu, but their chicken Tikka mandala is in such a flavorful sauce; it's so yummy. They always have a great spread of different options. I love that they have different chutney out and that naan is on the buffet so that you can sop up their delicious sauces with it. A great standout part of the experience is that you receive some dosa from a server during your meal. If I had one ding (and this is my preference), I wish they had Coke rather than Pepsi. Parking is so easy at Dosa Grill thanks to its accessible location in a pleasant strip mall on Western Ave. near SUNY (State University of New York). I went for the lunch buffet to sample as much as possible. It was good food. I didn't dislike it. But it wasn't very distinctive. Each flavor seemed to bleed into the next. There were no diverse textures. The food was well-cooked, and nothing was bad, but nothing was notable, either. Perhaps if I worked near Dosa Grill, going to the lunch buffet would be worth it merely for the convenience and variety, but as things stand, I don't expect I'll go back. read more

The food is overall delicious with a large variety of traditional South Indian food with some more "westernized" options. First time getting takeout was a great experience. Easy to communicate over the phone and specify my order preferences, fast pickup, and email receipt. The chicken tikka masala was very good. I think I've had better in terms of creaminess but this also tasted more "real" than the other Indian places. The lamb biryani was outstanding. The garlic on the naan was plentiful and fresh. I have been looking for a good indian place in albany for over a year and haven't found anything good until I found this place. By far the best I have EVER had. The chicken tika, lamb biryani w garlic naan was the ultimate combo for the most satisfying and flavorful meal I have gotten around here. The service was incredible, they made sure everything was up to our expectations and waters were full while at the same time not being helicopter waiters and giving us space to take in the great food. They were very kind and friendly throughout the entire meal. I went today for brunch. I loved it. The buffet was offered, but that wasn't what I came for. I wanted the Lamb Vindaloo, which is what I got and it was wonderful. It is offered at mild, medium, and hot. I got mild, which was perfect for me. Served steaming hot, with rice on the side. Also ordered the plain Naan, which was served hot. Its was delicious. It was busy when I arrived, and a little confusing if I should go up to the front and ask for a table, or if I would be greeted by someone to be seated. (My guess is some of that is because of takeout, some because of the buffet, in the same general area). I was eventually greeted by a waiter, table cleaned off and got seated. It was less then 10 minutes from when entering. Table setup was done immedialely. Water glasses were placed and filled. Water continued to be filled frequently throughout the meal. Our order was taken quickly. Servers were friendly and knowledgeable, although one more knowledge of the food offering, then the other. There was a slight delay in getting our bill. It was quite busy, more so as time went on. The waiter came, added up our bill on his hand held device and told us the amount. We were not given a copy of it. On the other hand, I didn't ask for one as it added up to what I had already figured it should be. Overall, I am so happy that I now have an Indian Food Restaurant that I can go to, or get take out and be happy with what I get. This restaurant just opened recently, so I am guessing some of the kinks will be worked out. Jody H read more
