Greek black snapper, oyster, and tuna sashimi. They then perfectly fry the remainder of the snapper!

My brother brought me here for the Omakase! I Must say, EVERYTHING was delicious! The value of the entire meal is stupendous! I left there with a full stomach. The highlight of the meal for me was the left-over fried Greek black snapper that started with the sashimi....once you finish the sashimi, they remove the remainder of the fish and perfectly fry it! We ate the entire fried fish, bones and all, they simply were fried in such a manner that everything just crumbled in your mouth! I can't wait to come back and try that night's omakase set!

This is such a hidden gem in the South Bay!! A friend recommended it but it took a while for me to go, I'm SO glad I finally did. $68 for such an epic and delicious omakase meal! First was the whole fish sashimi! They then fry the rest of the fish for you to eat at the end. We ended up taking it home for leftovers bc it was soo much food. Then it's 5 more plates with two sushi pieces on each. I don't love wasabi and was able to request the sushi pieces without wasabi. One of the sushi dishes is a sweet shrimp. You can get the shrimp head fried or in the miso soup. My partner went for fried and I think that was better bc then you could eat the whole thing and he got seaweed/tofu in his miso soup, while my soup just had the shrimp head. We were soo full and happy at the end. It's an amazing value for the quality and amount of food! You do need reservations, we saw them turn away ppl who tried to walk in. I would call a day or two before you want to go. We were able to get same day reservations, but it was on the later side and not sure if it was bc of a cancellation. I will be back, for sure!

We had a wonderful meal for two on our wedding anniversary. Service - 10/10 they put a lot of attention to detail and made sure we have an enjoyable experience. The server lady noticed we were on a date and asked to take a photo for us without us asking! Food - 9/10 would totally come back. There are so many dishes and for the price of $72, it was very well worth it. The portions may look deceivingly small, but we left the place STUFFED. My faves were the toro, uni, tuna hand roll and the yuzu sorbet. We thought they could use a tad less vinegar for the rice in the chirashi since it was pretty sour for us. Overall satisfied with this meal We called 1 week ahead to make a reservation. Out of all the omakase nearby that we tried, only Kantaro picked up, so they got extra points for that Can't wait to come back!

Insane Omakase crafted by Chef Kantaro! This is a small shop in Torrance that specializes in Omakase. They do not have a la carte and they are by reservation only. They make sure to prepare all the ingredients before you come in and they are only open for a short period of time at night. Their omakase is only $72/person and it comes with one plate of sashimi, 10 pieces of sushi, one hand roll, soup, and ice cream. They even deep fried the fish on the sashimi platter for us to enjoy after! Their seafood was extremely high quality and everything he prepared for us was so delicious. I recommend this place for an affordable but amazing Omakase experience!

I found kantaro on yelp while searching for a nice omakase spot for hubby's birthday- so glad I did! This is a little hole in the wall restaurant run by a husband and wife team. Kind of hidden in a small plaza and has the vibes of the "midnight diner." Super cute and have lots dodgers decors (owners are huge baseball/ LAD fans). They only offer omakase so there's no menu, other than the drinks menu (great selection of sake! They also have other drink choices). Such great service. Reservation is required so make sure to call ahead. We were most impressed by their food! We've had omakase before but felt like this place really did it the best. About 8 course or so of fresh sushi, sashimi, oysters, chirashi bowl, salad, fried fish, fried shrimp, and more. Very generous portion and food was beyond great quality- fresh and prepared carefully and beautifully. The sushi rice was also soft and well seasoned (warm, flavored, and not over powering). Even the fruits that came with our birthday special- ice cream dessert were sweet lol. Overall it's such a great experience and very reasonably priced omakase. We will be back again and again!

If you are looking for a fancy place with expensive amenities keep driving. But if you are looking for a good, creative and inexpensive Omakase experience, hit your breaks. The food was very good, the presentation was great and the service was prompt with a smile. We really enjoyed Kantaro and we will return.

I almost don't want to leave a review to keep this restaurant to myself but I must share in support! This is probably the most worth Omakase ever. For $65, you get so so many plates and everything is so fresh and delicious. Even the miso soup is such high quality. The owners are so kind and really just want people to appreciate their food. I think we cleaned off every single dish. It's almost a bit too much food, but you definitely leave happy and satisfied. They only do omakases at night and you gotta reserve in advance! The outside doesn't look like anything special, but don't let that fool you.

You know a joint is a hole in the wall when it shares the same tiny plaza as a liquor store and has nothing super fancy inside except for the amazing dishes placed in front of you. This definitely has a very homey, small mom-pop kinda feel. There are literally only two workers: wife as the server and husband as the sushi chef. With that said, the place is tiny so you'll have to make reservation in advance! For the price you pay, you'll get full off the omakase! The presentation and quality of the food is worth more than the price (but don't tell the owners that or else they'll increase it!) Bottles of sake here is really a steal! Come for the food, stay for the drinks. Huge shout out to the two working couple who kept an eye out for us and made sure we didn't drink too much before leaving. Come and see for yourself. You will NOT be disappointed. Especially when your first plate is so IG-worthy..

This didn't look like much at first from the outside but once the food comes out I was thoroughly impressed. Their sushi was top notch and the service was exceptional! Their staff was so kind and helpful. The service was quick, the fish was freshly prepared, and their portions were generous. We will definitely come back soon!

My gf and her husband have been raving about Kantaro Sushi for years and we have been meaning to make it out to Torrance to check out their omakase. Since my cousin had a birthday coming up, we decided to make a reservation. Unfortunately, they couldn't accommodate a party of 7 so our husbands had to stay home. Womp, womp. We ended up with a party of 4 for dinner. I miscalculated my travel time from South OC and ended up 5 minutes late due to traffic. The restaurant is located in a sketchy strip mall next to a liquor store and laundromat. Parking is tight. The omakase is $63 per person before taxes and gratuity. It consists of 10-courses. Once seated, we were served sunomono (cucumber salad) and a small green salad. We each had a hot green tea and water. I wasn't sure if this was included with the service as I had arrived a few minutes after the girls were seated. The next course was the snapper sashimi and sea anemone. Our server, let us know what we were eating and which sauce to pair our fish with. The presentation of the whole fish was beautiful. Then the nigiri courses came out: toro, ahi, halibut, yellowtail, Hoikkado scallop, Baja uni, Alaskan salmon roe, a mini chirashi bowl with shrimp head, and shrimp nigiri. The original snapper head that was served on the plate with the sashimi was taken back to the fryer and presented to us a second time as a fried fish dish. The shrimp head from the chirashi bowl was also fried per request (we were asked if we wanted it fried or added to our soup). The miso soup was brought out as with the fried items. The final pieces were: unagi, a toro hand roll, and tomago with strawberry jam. For dessert, we were given the option of green tea or red bean ice cream. Needless to say, we were stuffed at the conclusion of our meal. Our service was lovely and timed well. Our party was able to split our check four ways. Kantaro is a mom & pop establishment with outdated decor, but don't let that deter you from enjoying a meal here. If you're looking for a solid omakase experience, Kantaro is it. Reservations for dinner are required.

Just an amazing experience. I've been here numerous times, and without fail, every time it's been fantastic. Even during the height of pandemic, when indoor dining was shut down, Kantaro was putting together lovely takeout sushi dinners and helping me pack my car with the neatly packed takeout box. It's a small restaurant and you need to make reservations in advance. There's pretty much only one thing on the menu--the omakase. It's the chef's special, an assortment of sushi and fish that are the sushi chef's special creations. Sometimes there are slight modifications to the courses, but you can usually rely on there being certain items every time: toro nigiri, amberjack nigiri, uni, ikura, sweet shrimp, tuna hand roll, and fried fish. One of the fun parts is after you are served the sweet shrimp, you have the option of having the head deep fried (the only correct choice IMO) or in soup. Another cool part of the meal is having fish served to you as sashimi, after which the rest of the fish is fried and served to you later with dipping sauce. The service is impeccable. The staff is so kind and respectful and they put a lot of care into their craft. I highly recommend this place. You will not regret it!

    Richard N.

Gotta love this mom and pop sushi spot. It's not the typical all you can eat sushi, it's a completely different experience. There's no menu here. It's "Omakase" (お任せ) which means that you entrust the chef to curate the meal. I didn't know what was coming out and that was part of the fun. The 7-course meal was a surprise at every turn. The first "wow" moment was when a whole fish on a plate was brought. It actually was sliced on the underside and there's reason for it. It also came with oyster (nice!). Then there was the plate with buttered rice with a rice of prawn or lobster rice, this too comes back later. The unfinished half-fish from earlier came back in fried form! Then in the next dish there came miso soup with the prawn heads for flavor! There's so much detail I missed out and I may not have even been entirely accurate, but all in all, this sushi experience was unlike any other and should be experienced by all sushi lovers.

Nestled in the corner of a plaza that appears off the beaten path of Torrance, lies a little hole in the wall sushi joint serving up delicious and economical omakase. I've been known to pick restaurants where many a times friends would have to ask, "Are you sure about this place?" Kantoro Sushi was no exception. The plaza is tiny with very tight parking where most of the draw appears to be a liquor store. Additionally once you walk in, the layout seems more like a diner with older booths and some sports decor. However don't judge this restaurant by its looks or location. Reservations can be made via phone. We made ours approximately one week in advance and it wasn't difficult. The fish selection is quite impressive, especially for the price, with the black snapper being the most interesting and memorable. It's offered as a sashimi portion, presented on the fish which is then taken back for an agemono (fried) course after. The other stand out items were the yuzu adorned halibut and scallop. The yellowtail, toro, toro handroll, mini chirashi with sweet shrimp, yellowtail and tuna and eel were also exceptional. I thought the ikura, uni, salmon battera and unagi were just ok on our visit and I didn't care much for the tamago with cream cheese and jelly. The meal is closed out with miso soup and ice cream. You have the option of frying your shrimp head or having it in the soup. While adding it to the soup gives a new depth to your miso, I have to agree frying it might be the best bet because then you can eat it whole! I think this place is really great especially for the value. As of this review, omakase is about 68 per person. The portion is pretty big, especially considering the fried fish and the mini chirashi. If you're looking for a great omakase experience that won't break the bank, give Kantaro Sushi a try!

Ask the Community - Kantaro Sushi

Do they have lunch specials and do you need a reservation for just dinner or lunch as well?

No lunch. Dinner only. You must have a reservation and omakase only.

Are they open this week? I call but no one answers

    Same thing here. No answer.

How much is omakase and how many pieces?

$65 a person. But totally worth every penny spent.

    How much is omakase?

Not 100% sure, but I think it is $59 as of November 2021.

I am allergic to shrimp and lobster, can I get them substituted with something else?

    don't think so. it's omakase

Tried calling them about 10 + times all day today between 12:30-6:45pm. NO ONE has answered. I'm trying to make reservations, but not sure how to other than to call. They don't have a website either. Is the phone number listed on Yelp their real #?

This is probably not helpful news at this point, but they were closed for two weeks for a vacation. The perils of a mom and pop business.

How can I make reservations to this restaurant? Every time I call, nobody answers

Try calling during their opening hours? My bf called in between their lunch and dinner hours and we were able to make a reservation for dinner that same night. Maybe they're just busy?

We chose Ise-Shima at the Miyako Hotel for an early birthday celebration with my parents, wife,…read morechildren, sister and nephews. It should have been an easy win. The room is beautiful. The chefs are visible. The staff is plentiful. The music is good. The atmosphere feels like the kind of place that understands hospitality. Unfortunately, the experience never quite came together. The first challenge was the temperature. The dining room felt more like a sauna than a restaurant. To his credit, our server Arthur worked hard to help and eventually got management to increase the air conditioning. He was easily the standout of the evening and did everything he could to salvage the experience. We ordered extensively, including the $130 Ise Course. Some of it was quite good. Some of it was surprisingly disappointing. The grilled lobster with yuzu miso and kinome was completely overcooked, dry and buried under too much sauce. One of the signature dishes of the course ended up being one of the weakest. The grilled yellowtail suffered from the same problem: dry, overcooked and lacking the care you would expect from a restaurant presenting a seasonal multi course menu at this price point. The larger issue was organization. Dishes constantly arrived with servers asking, "Who ordered this?" or "Who has the udon?" The dining room felt strangely disconnected from the kitchen. Food runners seemed unsure where dishes belonged, which created confusion throughout the meal. Then things really went sideways. Trying to be respectful, I asked that my parents be served first. Everyone eventually received their meals and continued eating. The problem was that my Ise Course never arrived in sequence. My family finished their meals. My children finished. My parents finished. My sister finished. And on my birthday, I sat there alone waiting for several missing courses while everyone else watched. A seasonal set menu is supposed to feel paced and intentional. Instead, it felt forgotten. Arthur again stepped in and spoke with management. The restaurant offered complimentary desserts, which was appreciated, although somewhat awkward because my meal was still arriving while everyone else was already moving on to dessert. What happened next genuinely surprised me. When the bill arrived, management returned and asked whether we would be willing to authorize an additional charge so gratuity could be increased from 18% to 20% because of the size of the party. After the heat, the delays, the confusion, the overcooked centerpiece dishes, the missed pacing and spending a birthday meal eating alone after everyone else had finished, it felt like the wrong conversation to be having. I don't enjoy writing reviews like this because there is clearly talent in the building and Arthur deserves recognition for how hard he worked. But hospitality is ultimately about making people feel cared for. On this visit, despite a beautiful room and some good food, that never happened.

an outstanding uni shooter, a well-balanced pasta, but an oyster dish that did not work…read more Miyabi Uni offers a fun and highly specialized uni experience, although the dishes were not equally successful. The Uni Shooter was easily the highlight for me. Since it is consumed in one bite, the flavors arrive almost like a sudden burst. The vinegar-based tosazu sauce hits first with a sharp, energetic acidity. Then the quail egg yolk comes in and softens the vinegar while blending with the creamy uni, making the entire flavor become rounder and more harmonious. The contrast between the initial acidic impact and the gentle richness that follows was extremely well designed. It was memorable and very enjoyable. The Uni Oyster was much less successful. Both the oyster and the fish roe already have strong, assertive flavors. Together, they create an effective duet: the oyster provides the deep briny foundation, while each roe bead bursts and repeatedly adds small waves of salinity and texture. Unfortunately, the uni was too delicate to compete with either of them. Its flavor was almost completely lost. Instead of improving the oyster, the uni felt as though it had been added simply because this is a uni-focused restaurant. In my opinion, the dish would actually have been more coherent without it. The Uni Pasta was good. It was creamy, rich, and full-flavored, with enough uni character to make the dish satisfying. The portion was also very well judged. Rich uni pasta can easily become tiring, but this serving ended at exactly the right moment--just as I was beginning to feel that another few bites might become too heavy. Overall, the Uni Shooter was excellent and worth ordering. The pasta was enjoyable and well portioned. The oyster dish, however, needed better balance because the uni was overwhelmed by the much stronger oyster and roe. A worthwhile destination for uni lovers, but the best dishes are the ones in which the uni is allowed to remain the focus.

I am disappointed in myself for waiting this long to try Ueno Sushi. I've been driving by this location on Carson st for 10 years. It used to be something else (Thai maybe?) before it was a sushi restaurant. I think it was something else before that. I never went here because I thought the food would be mediocre given the history of changes but I was so wrong. SO WRONG! I came here on a Friday night for a party of 1 and while the restaurant was full and many customers were coming in for their reservations, I did not have to wait. The Sashimi Combo 10pc was surprisingly generous. Every single piece of sashimi was huge. I honestly thought they forgot to cut each piece in half lol. It also comes with a bowl of rice, salad, and miso soup. I finished the night with blue fin toro sushi. For those who might find themselves confused like me, this is labeled Sushi on the menu, but it is better labeled as nigiri -- the sashimi on a small ball of rice. It comes with two pieces and the tuna was HUGE. I almost couldn't see the rice! I was blown away by what I was getting but it makes sense given the price I was paying. I was so happy. Overall, great food, wonderful portion sizes. Downside is the pricing but it matches what you're getting. The biggest downside is the parking. It is a small parking lot so you may have to get street parking. Other than that, I'm coming back.

Once you step inside, though, it feels like a completely different world. The atmosphere is both casual and classy, with a clean, well-maintained dining room and tasteful decor. Service was quick and efficient. Ordering from the tablet was convenient, and I appreciated that both water and miso soup are self-serve from a machine, which adds a nice touch of cleanliness and convenience. The food was excellent and offered great value for the price. The fish was fresh and cut generously thick, while the rolls were absolutely packed with ingredients. They definitely don't skimp on portions here. Fresh food, generous servings, a pleasant atmosphere, and efficient service--an easy 5 stars!

No it's like forcing you to tip over 25% it's crazy. That is why I gave it three stars. They want to overcharge you to just do ayce next time. I'm not sure I would come back because of the service fee. That makes it way unaffordable.

The food highlights were easily the gobo chips and the skewers. The gobo chips arrived as an impressive, light-as-air mound dusted with seaweed seasoning... super crisp, savory, and addictively easy to snack on. The pork and wagyu skewers were masterfully executed as well, coming off the grill tender, juicy, and packed with rich, smoky flavor. The toasted eihire (stingray/filefish) was another great traditional touch, perfectly chewy and ideal for dipping in the spiced Japanese mayo my favorite.. On the flip side, a few dishes lacked the depth I was hoping for. The chicken karaage was fried well, but the flavor itself was a bit bland and needed more seasoning or marination and soft. The pressed rice rolls also fell flat, particularly the mentaiko roll.. it felt skimpy on the cod roe, and because the mentaiko seemed cooked through, it missed that fresh, raw texture and punchy brine that makes the dish shine. As for the space, it's quite dark, compact, and packed tightly with tables, which makes it feel a bit cramped when it's busy. However, seeing the dining room constantly full tells me that their best dishes keep people coming back. While there were some inconsistencies in taste, the highlights made it a solid experience, and I'm looking forward to returning to try more of the menu and updating my score!

Taking a while for the six people to order so I nudged her and I asked her to move and she seemed upset that I did that but didn't say anything no apology so it was very uncomfortable and I was rushing through my food so I burnt my tongue on the hot soup again even though I knew it was hot because I just wanted to get out of there. I sure wish I had selected a different seat!! I wouldn't get the Nabeyaki soup again. It was really big and had a lot of end pieces of tough napa cabbage. There were two pieced of shitake mushroom and the standard thin fish cake slice. There was and egg in the soup and a three small chicken pieces. On the side were three small pieces of green bean and two tempura shrimp.
