I'm very fussy about sushi. So much so that when I crave it, I rarely visit a sushi restaurant that I've never been to before. With that said, yesterday, I visited Kappo Irifune for the very first time. I think it was great. However, it didn't exactly inspire me to re-examine my life choices and start trying out new Japanese restaurant spots. Before I talk about anything else, I have to begin with the service. It was an A+ and here were the reasons why: -My wife and I showed up to the restaurant several minutes before opening. Usually, restaurants are a stickler for their hours. Our server, however, let us in early without a fuss. -Our server closed the back door to the restaurant since she was concerned that the cool air coming in may be uncomfortable for us. -The food came out quickly, but not so quickly that all our food came out at the same time. The way they spaced out the serving of the dishes was perfect. -We ordered the Chef's choice of the day sashimi set that comes with 10 slices of sashimi. They gave us 12 slices at no extra cost. -They gave us free matcha ice cream at the end of our meal. For the most part, I really enjoyed the food here. I ordered the following items: Miso soup with Asari clams, various nigiri sushi pieces (blue fin tuna, blue fin tuna toro, seared toro, salmon, salmon belly, egg, and yellowfin belly), the sashimi set (blue fin tuna, toro, horse mackerel, red snapper, bonito, and (I think) yellow fin)),and four piece shrimp tempura. I thought the salmon nigiri, blue fin tuna nigiri, red snapper sashimi, and salmon were home runs. The shrimp tempura was outstanding, and the best I've had since I was last at Inaba restaurant that specializes in tempura. As much as I liked the items noted above, I must point out a couple of dishes that fell well short of expectations. The toro nigiri, which I'm assuming was chu-toro, was not fatty at all. It tasted like ordinary tuna. Also, my wife's mackerel sashimi had two small pieces of bones in it, hurting the roof of her mouth. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I also have to mention that there are a lot of promotional material beneath the clear plastic place mats on the table. They are dated from 2024 and 2025. Not sure if those promotions are still in effect, but they may want to update their materials.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There are plenty of sushi restaurant options in the South Bay and beyond. Some good. I absolutely love kappo Irifune! I went once and keep coming back. There sushi is super delicious but more than that their other dishes are absolutely amazing. Highly recommend getting their chawanmushi, its steamed egg very delicate in texture. Their salmon collar is also a good fish as it's one of my favorite parts if the salmon. First time dining at KI and I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner. I ordered the Fried Oysters as an appetizer and the Nigiri Sushi & Tempura Gozen for the main course. The oysters had a crispy panko breading and was accompanied by Tonkatsu sauce, Tartar sauce and a dab of hot mustard. The Nigiri was very fresh and I really liked their sushi rice. We had a cucumber roll with avocado, it was delicious! Also the house Sake was delicious. It was hard to see if anything on the menu is vegan, you have to ask the server to find out. I do wish they had a loyalty program or a check in offer for anyone who plans to review on Yelp or Google. As we were leaving they stopped us at the front to make sure the new server had charged us correctly. We did take a bit of offense, they treated us like we might not have paid....if you have a digital option to pay you should be comfortable with your customers using it I think. The owner was sooo sweet and the customer service was amazing. However, the food just wasn't up to par. We got the Uni omakase for $80 and it came with a hand roll but the seaweed was soggy even though i ate it right when it came out. I don't like soggy hand rolls so it wasn't very good. Then when we got our omakase set of nigiri we couldn't finish it because every piece had an excess amount of wasabi in each piece that it wasn't pleasant to eat. The wasabi was so over powering that's all we could taste because it was A LOT of wasabi hiding under the fish. This is not our first time having omakase or nigiri with wasabi in it but my friends also tried to help me eat mine and also agreed it was way too much wasabi that we all started coughing and wheezing unfortunately. The miso soup was also very salty and normally you can't mess up miso soup. We came in at 6:30pm on a Thursday night it wasn't busy at all so service was fast and I can't say enough good things about the owner. After making my rounds around Old Torrance for a bit, I found parking in the area and walked over. I spied an underground lot in the same building as the restaurant, but I wanted to stay on the street. I loved the menu; there's real snow crab and many rolls that aren't heavily sauced. I chose a salmon skin roll because it had gobo and two hand rolls- one had snow crab sticks and the other was eel. Everything was so fresh! Overall, I would definitely return and try more of the menu! The sashimi gozen comes with miso soup, salad, rice, a steamed egg type of pudding, and tempura. Needless to say, I had more than enough food! Service outstanding! The waitress had a dodger hat on and I mentioned to her that I was a dodger fan as well, and that they won on my birthday which was yesterday. She added an extra piece of toro to my meal and brought me this really tasty desert that had ice cream, sponge cake, and matcha puffs with a birthday candle. Oh and an iced tea! My uni toro handroll was ok, uni was fresh and sweet, toro was meh. We ordered 3 chirashi bowls with uni and ikura (we also ordered 2 tempura- not photographed). Tuna and hamachi was good, the rest of the sashimi was meh, uni and ikura was really good. I mean the price wasn't too bad either. We paid $210 for 3 adults and 2 children. This year for Thanksgiving, it was going to just be me and my parents as my siblings were staying out of town and my partner was out of town with his family. Instead of getting the typical turkey dinner, which none of us really love, we decided we wanted to share quality sushi. I wasn't sure what places would be open on Thanksgiving but lucky for us Irifune was. I was able to order a Sashimi platter in advance with Tomoko as well as some udon in case anyone wasn't full on fish. The restaurant is inside a residential/retail plaza with underground and street parking. The entrance it's near the escalators and elevator (tho the escalators were under repair during my visit). Picking up the food to go was relatively quick though I could tell they were busy even though it was an odd meal time (230pm). The food was beautifully cut and presented and the pieces were a decent size. We were all satisfied with the quality of seafood and my parents enquired where the restaurant was as they may want either dine in or order pick up in the future--Irifune really made their Thanksgiving! As I did not dine in, I can't really comment on the dine in service or ambiance but the food itself is great. I'll for sure be back. read more

The place specializes in uni (sea urchin) but I didn't get to try it because my mom doesn't like sea urchin. I'll definitely give it a try the next time I come back with my friend The owners are extremely accommodating and very attentive, making sure that my mom and I had a great time after a long day of work. We arrived near closing time and Ms. Tomoko made sure that we have a good dining experience without rushing us like some other places we've been to. We ordered the salmon carpaccio, sashimi plate (8 slices), around 20 oysters and a mixed tempura plate. We ended up getting all of the above with extra sashimi, miso soup, and fruits to end the meal on the house (*´`*) The oysters were extremely good, it's $3 for each. They were fresh and plum! The mixed tempura plate was only $10 and you get 5 shrimps with 3-4 different types of veggies. I also enjoyed the sashimi plate and the owner also gave us extra fish with deep-fried bones. At the end of the meal, my mom decided to ask the owners about places in Japan because I'll be going on a trip soon.
