What a divine find in Torrance! You do need reservations but we called and they had a spot for us. We got to sit right at the bar and I love sitting at a sushi bar. Can I just say the music was amazing!! Early 90's Japanese music is amazing. Aikawa Nanase was on and I was allll about it. They have Sapporo on draft so that's great. I wasn't sure how the sushi chef worked but he looked busy so we ordered with the waitress and with him. It was only him and he was amazing. The standouts were the scallop, amber jack and halibut. Sushi was fresh and rice was yummy. The negihama handroll was fresh. For me the most amazing thing was the fried anago (sea eel) which was a special of the kitchen. Sooo good and the octopus was perfectly cooked. Amazing!! Also the tempura roll was the best I have ever had. The fish is fresh and the price is fair and worth it. I would be back again.

First 1/2 Omikase and some a la carte (snow crab, marinated salmon, blue fin tuna, albacore)

Everything was incredible and I don't say that lightly! The freshness was unreal and all the flavors balanced perfectly. They won us over, we can't wait to come back! The albacore was my FAVORITE (bottom right). Honorable mention to the extra fatty tuna per my boyfriend, that was his favorite. But you seriously can't go wrong with anything. The marinated salmon melted perfectly in your mouth. The blue fin tuna was dreamy. And the snow crab was insanely delicious. I probably wouldn't get the spider roll again, only because it wasn't as amazing as the sushi so id rather get more of what we loved lol. Also, get the house salad!! The dressing is so refreshing, wishing they sold that separately to go lol. (P.S. the service was perfect, they are the sweetest people! They've been here 20 years!)

The sushi here is excellent! One of our favorite places in the South Bay. And the smelt fish tempura is our favorite non sushi dish! Had 3 orders tonight. All the roe and light crispy tempura batter. So good!

Dinner reservations required. Not sure why. The place was 1/3 or less full. When we arrived we were the only ones. Oh well, whatever The sushi is spectacular. Wow! Sure , it's expensive , but the quality here is amazing I was referred here from some of my Japanese national friends. They did not steer me wrong. Best sushi in the South Bay. The service is prompt, polite , amazing. This is now my go to place

We've decided that for our anniversary, we always eat sushi, and this year did not disappoint! In LA, you can easily find pricey sushi, but this place offers great quality at a reasonable price. We wanted to focus on sushi, so we kept the appetizers light. Always gotta get the tempura shishamo--so good! Also, the sake from the chef's hometown in Toyama is a perfect match with the meal. so we highly recommend it.The restaurant is small, so it's better to make a reservation.

Our go to sushi place in the South Torrance area. The owner chef is reserved and very nice. He comes from a family of sushi chefs from the Toyama prefecture so we appreciate the specialties he serves from that area such as the sauté white baby shrimps (Shiro ebi)!

Came here for my birthday. Very quaint, clean, and delicate food. Great customer service too. Two things to note: 1. One of the fish head dishes was so thin there was virtually no meat in it. I wish the waitress gave me a heads or cancelled before serving (you can see it in my pictures). 2. PSA for those interested in trying this place: it's reserve only!

    Vicky C.

The fish could be fresher. Still, it's a decent spot for conversations with coworkers or friends, and the service was good.

I came here for lunch for Omakase. I've been to a number of places near by, and they have all been lackluster. I needed a new place to find better fish and rice. This place had high reviews, and was nearby so I thought I'd give it a try. I sat at the sushi bar, and waited around 10 minutes to the dinner omakase for lunch. They have more fish options here, at a price, and it was fresh, Clean, and good. The rice bed was "OK" as it was hard in certain places and not enough acidity. Overall I think it's a decent place with a market price for Omakase. I wouldn't order it all the time, but it's a good 2nd or 3rd choice.

    The best sushi on hawthorn!

Go to https://www.sushiken-la.com/menu-dine-in & under Menu Dine In: Reservation Only for Dinner, there are 2 links: Dinner & Lunch; click on Lunch for the lunch menu.

How do people make reservations here? I've called non stop but no one ever answers

Trying call right when they open for lunch/dinner, or a few mins. before they close for lunch/dinner. They're really busy mid-lunch/-dinner rush so they're not likely to pick-up.

I finally gave this place a try and one thing is certain, I will be back - again, again, and again :) Kagura has a small parking lot in the back that tends to fill up quickly, but there's an abundance of street parking. I came to this establishment to find two parties of 3 in already waiting by the door and for the staff to let them in. Totally understand why. Upon walking in, you're transported to Japan, this spot definitely has a unique, homey, quaint charm to it. Agedashi Tofu: 4.8/5 - I wasn't expecting the portion to be large so if I get this again, I'll make sure to bring a friend Millefeuille Shisho Cheese Katsu: 5/5 - Made with meticulous care. An incredibly well-balanced dish with the protein, cheese, and what I believe to be a shiso/perilla leaf incorporated. Crunch was perfect, lots of places tend to overdue it with the batter. This tasted so good it honestly didn't need the tonkatsu sauce (still delish with or without the sauce). Service is phenomenal. I was impressed to see two people essentially taking care of my entire section as the restaurant filled up during the dinner rush. No issues with arrival of food or the pacing. The staff was warm, cordial, and proactively asked if I had questions since I told them it was my first visit. I'm looking forward to coming back in the future and will definitely save some room for beer and/or dessert.

The tuna had a balanced fat and was minced in a manner that I felt it melt in my mouth. It's a good match with rice. The Kaisen Bowl had a variety of seafoods and all of them tasted very fresh! Food is a 4 stars, but because of the excellent staff service, 5 stars. We ordered: Mune kizokuyaki - chicken breast all spice (tare may be a better choice, but my husband wanted to try mixed spices since it was different) Unagi (eel) Teba (chicken wings) Very flavorful Ebi (shrimp) the head and shell were left on, so won't order it again as it's too much work to remove the shell and fingers get dirty) Tsukune (chicken meatballs) Beef harami steak with mashed potatoes & cabbage- only $2 more to add side mashed & cabbage Tori Q (marinated cucumbers) Agedashi Tofu Houjicha pudding for dessert (loved it) Drinks : houijicha tea and Sapporo beer Overall, for the price and the size, it's well worth it. Again, had better yakitori's elsewhere, but serving size is much smaller, so you end up ordering more; which means more $$$$. Service was also amazing and food came out quick. Our favorite picks are: Unagi, teba, tsukune, beef harami, & Tori Q cucumbers. Will come back again for sure to try other skewers/apps. I will definitely order the chicken breast/green onions in tare sauce next time as opposed the mixed spices. In summary, I highly recommend to check this place out and experience the great ambiance and service.

It was small and kind of dry. I walked out super satisfied. I feel for the people who were disappointed because they've been to other locations after the fact, but I noticed the menu is already changing (saw a couple of updated editions), so hopefully they keep growing. I'd attribute my good experience to the responsive waiter, getting seated immediately at the bar, and the fact that I crushed it with my order. I'm already thinking about coming back because we really need more yakitori spots for those "in-between" stages, like a late lunch or a late- day cravings when you just want variety and small bites.
