I was just starting to eat my meal when the sat a large group breaking them in to tables on both sides of me. So people needed to squeeze by and then one guy asked if he could sit for a moment at my table. I said okay. But then I think he planned to stay at my table until finally my waiter moved him! There was a seat at one their tables the whole time. Then their waitress wedge herself with her back toward me in between the tables and I had to stop eating. Very disruptive and rude. Taking a while for the six people to order so I nudged her and I asked her to move and she seemed upset that I did that but didn't say anything no apology so it was very uncomfortable and I was rushing through my food so I burnt my tongue on the hot soup again even though I knew it was hot because I just wanted to get out of there. And then when I was done, I had to wait a while for the check and then they couldn't process the Apple Pay at the table so then I had to go to the front and wait for somebody to attend to me there overall this experience was not fun and stressful and I had got there right when they opened. I sure wish I had selected a different seat!! I wouldn't get the Nabeyaki soup again. It was really big and had a lot of end pieces of tough napa cabbage. It was pretty long. And I was like, what? And I have long hair, so I thought, maybe t was mine? Giving the benefit of the doubt. I kept eating. And like two bites later I encountered a 2nd hair. Long hair. It was twisted among some of the elements in the salad. Did not come from my head. I was beyond grossed out, and flagged over the staff. I told him I found a hair in the salad and my husband piped up that I had found 2. I SHOWED him the hair - disgusting. The staff member took the salad away and asked if I wanted another, and I said no. And that was it. The bill came, and was like nothing had happened There was no making amends, no apologies. We had zero plans to eat out and randomly ended up here on the way home from being way out of our usual zone... and my wife literally said, "we did good with this place." That pretty much sums it up. They had a temping Manager's Special $17.75 Shrimp and Veg Tempura, Salad, Sushi Combination and Udon or Soba, but I'm not big on raw fish, so I selected the M9 Ten Toji Don $15.25 shrimp tempura, egg & onion cooked in a special sauce served over rice, with the udon served hot. The portion and variety of food was great, but the rice bowl wasn't what I had imagined it to be. I would happily return to try something else though. read more

I can't believe that in all my years of visiting the South Bay, I didn't know about this place until just a few weeks ago. Now that I know, though, I will 100% be returning! I visited for lunch on a Sunday around 2, and it was pretty busy but we were seated in about 10 minutes. The restaurant is fairly small and cozy. Upon being seated, the server immediately brought over some complimentary iced tea, which was unexpected and great. All of my family members and I opted to try the manager's special, which comes with sushi, tempura, salad, and your choice of hot or cold soba or udon. I thought the food was great. Perfectly balanced--nothing felt overly heavy, and I left feeling full but not like I was going to burst. The salad dressing was very good, and I thought the tempura batter was also very light and crispy. My cold soba and sushi were both pretty standard. My favorite is the Ten Zaru ($14.95) with cold soba noodles. It comes with both shrimp and vegetable tempura. The soba was quite good. The noodles were al dente with just the right amount of bounce. All the accoutrements - dipping sauces, oroshi, scallions etc. - were the perfect complements to enhance the sauces. I appreciated the simplicity of the meal and I think that's where Matsui excels. If you like variety, I recommend ordering a combination special. For around $15, you can get both a noodle + rice entree. I love the curry don ($14.95) with a side of cold soba noodles. You get carbs in every imaginable form. I can't think of a better combo. If you're a little indecisive, the menu here is pretty expansive. There are so many combos at ridiculously reasonable prices. Prices are very affordable here in the current economy so this place was pretty full on a Saturday night, but luckily there was a table available for us. I liked the free barley tea they serve here and they were proactive on the refills. There were only two wait staff so service was slow but the food came out within a reasonable amount of time. The food was decent, but the sides that come with the combination sets were just boiled broccoli and carrots and a side of kewpie mayo. We asked for allergy modifications, but they still added sesame, so this restaurant is not very allergy friendly. I got the sansai combination with udon. It was a bit too salty in my opinion. It's on a bed of rice so the rice was also salty. I asked if I could add salmon with it but they didn't have that as an option. The special sushi combination was very cheap and under $20 but you get what you pay for, so don't expect amazing sushi. The black cod was very tender and not overcooked.
