    Kabayaki Unagi Donburi
    Cid I.

Great little homey restaurant with a variety of dishes to choose from, some atypical from what you would see with other Japanese restaurants. I was treated warmly, despite it being a slower night. One other couple was finishing their meal as I arrived. I heard that they use fresh eels instead of the pre-seasoned, pre-glazed packaged ones that are so plentiful in the US and so I had to come try it. I was hard-pressed looking for a place that uses fresh eels. The dish took some time to prepare but I came fully aware and ready. I can happily say that the kabayaki donburi was tasty and not sickeningly sweet! You could still taste the eel on top of the seasoning used to baste it. I really appreciated how they didn't take the easier way out and slap a ready-to-eat one on a bed of rice. While waiting for the unagi, I ordered ankimo in ponzu and in their own "Fukuno" style. Ponzu is always a nice contrast but Fukuno style ankimo just melted like butter. A shame that portions are never enough, but it was delicious while it lasted. Other side dishes were ordered too and they were overall good. Unfortunately, some of the items I was hoping to order were out of season (firefly squid and persimmons), so I will come back later to try them. As others have mentioned, this small restaurant is run solely by an older couple. Be sure to call ahead to make a reservation or confirm hours for the day. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If you do not, you may be turned away purely due to capacity and staffing limitations or they may close early.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They are a lovely duo and can only handle so much and the seating capacity accurately reflects this.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

We always look for new/seasonal dishes on the menu and try them. Add more to the "must have" list. Chef Mitsuo is the master of grills. Oysters, cod and Hamachi collars are grilled to perfection. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Seating is limited.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Be sure to make reservations!!

This place is very authentic Japanese food. Love the Battera dish. Test very good and remind part of my area seasoning. I went back again with my husband and he enjoyed as well.

I would rather not to leave this review simply because I want this restaurant to be my own hidden gem. The monk fish liver and fried tuna balls are so good I will dream about them. I live an hour drive away from this place and I will definitely come back for them.

We've lived near this little gem of a restaurant for many years. This place is tiny - it probably can comfortably hold about a dozen or so guests. It's a mom and pop operation. The "mom" is so cute...Quickly walking about to take orders, deliver drinks, and always with friendly smiling eyes. They're wearing masks - we can assume those smiling eyes reflect a smiling face! Happy to support this local business. It took a craving for a bento box lunch to actually try this restaurant. Since we we were getting lunch, we decided to make dinner reservations. That was a great decision! Dinner was delicious! Only a few photos are posted. The chutoro melted in your mouth. The pumpkin braised in dashi was tender and sweet. The ankimo was cooked just right. The sake aged in cedar barrels was a perfect compliment. My only regret - not having enough room to try more dishes. Looking forward to our next experience! Side note- the bento box we ordered for lunch was delicious! No photos available.

Small mom/pop operated store reopened after lockdown. Hours change, menu changed as now they offers take out only. Taste is still superior than most Japanese restaurants nearby and the box items change from time to time. You get a lot of items in box and they all taste good. Need to support small local business!!

Vibe: Most authentic Japanese style I've been to in LA. It's a homy tiny restaurant running by a Japanese old couple. Food: We went here for their chirashi bowl. It's the most authentic one I have had in LA. Price is affordable for a normal dinner and the fishes are very fresh. Love the octopus! - Dining in - Dinner - $30-$40 per person

Best Japanese restaurant in the area! The restaurant is owned by a husband and wife and let me tell you, their food is delicious and service is great.

The meatball is tender and flavorful, full of ginger and green onion. The custard was perfect for anyone who enjoys a rich dessert. The first thing I tried was the Sizzling Mushroom Gravy over Crispy Rice; The dish was to die for and my personal favorite thing I tried. I don't even know how to describe how flavorful and well put together the gravy was with mushroom pieces that were perfectly soft and easy to eat. Next was the salad which was so fresh, citrusy, and tasty; It was salty and all the flavors complemented each other so well forming a perfect citrusy salad. After that was the shrimp tempura. It was not too fried/flaky. It was kind of like a taquito. The shrimps flavor was very fresh with a complementary umami flavor. The Sardine Sashimi was super high quality. It was super soft and fatty and ended with a heavy pleasant fishy flavor. The miso grilled cod was great. Not much to say about it was almost creamy and the miso was good. I ate the skin too and it tasted great. The main part of this place is the soba. The kikouchi soba are thicker 100% buckwheat noodles that were very well cooked and pleasant to eat. The Plum "Ume" broth was so refreshing and nice. I ate it cold; I probably would have preferred it hot but the is just a personal preference. The Ginger Pork was great. The pork itself was super gingery without being too pungent. The shredded cabbage was super easy to pick up and eat and the side of noodle salad and miso soup were great complements to the meal. I can tell no corners were cut anywhere and that Otafuku puts a little of effort into every meal they prepare. There is great care for all of the preparations and it was a very special meal. I felt like I was in Japan for a second as the feel of the restaurant is very "homey" and the ambiance is a nice cheerful atmosphere.

Spoon House is known for their Japanese-style pastas, so we got the Japanese-style clam sauce with mushrooms as well as the Japanese-style cod-roe and butter sauce with squid and uni. I was really impressed with how clean the flavors of both pastas were! I ate so much and never felt overwhelmed as I usually do with pastas. The seafood also tasted really fresh and the squid was buttery soft and not chewy or tough. They also have $1 salads which had a tasty, classic Japanese dressing and fresh greens. You just can't find any food for $1 these days, so the $1 pricepoint was really surprising! I also love that they gave a huge serving of bread and butter as an appetizer. The staff was super kind and accommodating, and the restaurant is very cute and retro. They have a small parking lot in the back, as well as easy street parking. Overall, I'm already really looking forward to coming back here and trying more of their dishes. Or getting the same thing because it was just that good!

It was pretty busy on a Sunday evening, but after about a 5-minute wait for a table to be cleaned, we were seated. The space had a lively, casual vibe -- definitely a popular spot for dinner. I love seafood, but I also really wanted to try the katsu, so even though I'm not a big eater, I went with Combo D... which was huge. Honestly, I think it could easily feed two people. The side soup and bread came out almost immediately. The soup was simple but nice with a bit of pepper, and the bread was so good -- warm, soft, and buttery (I had to pace myself knowing what was coming). The pasta was delicious -- the clams weren't overly "clammy" (lol), and the cream sauce was light and not too heavy. The katsu was crispy and satisfying, and the salad added a nice, refreshing balance. Everything worked really well together. I ended up taking a good portion home, and even reheated, it was still just as good! Overall, a great spot with generous portions and solid food. I'd definitely come back and would recommend it to others!

I usually read through the Yelp comments and look at the photos before trying a new place, but this time I only checked the rating -- which was great -- and decided to go based on that and the FB post. Looking back, I probably should have read the reviews first. We didn't realize the bento boxes are only available during lunchtime, and we were also surprised to find out they don't have yakitori. Those were two things we were hoping to try. We came with a party and ordered several items, including the Akatsuki Special Hot Pot, which was recommended to us, along with other dishes. The tempura and karaage were definitely the highlights -- both were really good. The rest of the food was okay for our group, but unfortunately it didn't really satisfy our craving or stand out the way we were hoping. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the staff was friendly. I think the biggest thing was that our expectations were set by what we saw on FB, and the items that caught our attention weren't available when we visited. I would recommend checking their current menu before going so you know what to expect. Maybe we'll come back another time to try their lunch menu and explore more of what they offer.
