The soba was properly cooked. The broth probably used a soy sauce base with some sugar. I believe the vegetables in the broth were spinach. The salad dressing was creamy with some sweetness. Perhaps, a sesame dressing. Good tasting California rolls. The salmon had a charred taste. Could have used a little less salt. But if you eat the salmon with the white rice, it works. Our server said he liked the cold soba better than hot so we chose cold soba. The combo also comes with a 4 piece California roll, salad, miso soup, and rice. They also had a small menu of extras that I don't see on their website, but it has other common Japanese appetizers. We ordered the fried chicken (karaage). We were presented with everything pretty quickly, I took my photo around 7:18 pm lol. Everything was delicious. The mackerel was simple, salty, and umami but I did enjoy the pork cutlet just a little bit more with the sauce and mustard. The cold soba was excellent, I was very happy we got that. The salad and California roll added some nice freshness, as did the shredded cabbage served with the karaage and pork cutlet. Both meats were fried perfectly, very crispy and not soggy at all. The decor and ambiance is very clean and Japanese inspired with a display of Japanese wood joining techniques in the back. The staff are courteous and friendly, answering when called. Food took a while to come out but it arrived hot. I received a box with tempura and rice, tentsuyu (tempura dip), miso soup, udon, and small section of mixed vegetables. The miso soup is fantastic, full bodied with plenty of tofu and nori. The udon was the most disappointing with a little to much bite in the noodle, a lack of unami, and the vegetable being lifeless. The tempura was good but heavily improved with the sweet and salty tentsuyu. It. For vegetable tempura I had half a shittake mushroom, and a large and small shishito pepper. I was expecting to hate the pepper, but it was good, not a lot of harsh flavors and the light tempura breading really helps the texture. The shrimp wasn't super fresh, but the flavor of the shrimp was still there which was fantastic. However the shrimp skin was a little rough and jagged, which could be an issue with preparation. We ordered the fish combo with mackerel and a side of cold soba noodles. The combo also came with four California rolls, miso soup, and a large bowl of rice -- more than enough food for the two of us to leave feeling very full. The portion size is generous, and while it may seem a bit pricey at first glance, you're definitely getting a lot of food. The mackerel was grilled beautifully -- lightly crisped skin, nicely salted, and full of flavor. If you order it, just be mindful that there are quite a few small bones. The disposable chopsticks they provide are fairly thick, which makes it a little tricky to cleanly pull the meat off the bones, so take your time. I also really enjoyed the cold soba, which was cooked to the perfect texture. The dipping sauce paired well with a touch of the included wasabi -- subtle, balanced, and refreshing. My only regret was the octopus carpaccio. The octopus itself was no different from what you'd find on a piece of nigiri, just sliced a bit differently. It had some excess moisture -- almost like it hadn't been fully pressed, which made it less pleasant to eat. We came here on New Year's Day since most other businesses in the area were closed. We wanted some soba to celebrate the new year so settled on Fukagawa after searching on Yelp. My husband and I ordered the udon with tempura set, and the cold soba with tempura set. It did take awhile to get our food since the kitchen seemed to be backed up. When the food came I noticed the portion size was small for the price. The tempura had a heavy batter and the cold soba was unfortunately overcooked and soggy. For an authentic Japanese restaurant this was quite disappointing, I had pretty high expectations. Our bill came out to be around $58 with tip. My son was looking for an authentic style Japanese izakaysa style restaurant that serves oyako don and it just so happens that one of my bookmarked Japanese restaurants in Gardena serves oyako don and it was decided where we were going. Located on Redondo beach blvd in the Tokyo Central plaza is fukagawa. They have a pretty extensive menu with a variety of specials. From katsu's, curry's , teriyaki plates, tempura combinations, Japanese style breakfasts and even a reasonable steak combination plate. My son was focused and stayed with the oyako J'yu which is a carefully prepared chicken in a scrambled egg and onions in a sweet sukiyaki style broth with a boxed container of steamed rice. I went with a similar item except with a pork katsu. My wife went with the deep fried oyster combination which came with a salad, miso soup, hot or cold soba or udon, a cabbage salad and 4 pieces of California roll. My daughter a similar combo but with chicken teriyaki. All in all everything was prepared deliciously and with quality in the forefront. The service was typical Japanese, they serve you everything and pretty much leave you alone and even at payment, they don't rush or push you away and when you are ready you just go to the register to pay. Fukagawa is located in the same plaza as Tokyo Central & Main, in a hidden corner with a large shared parking lot. If you are facing Tokyo Central, then Fukagawa would be in the right hand corner. I have been wanting to try Fukagawa because of their traditional Japanese breakfast, which they serve all day. So since my husband, our little girl dog and I happened to be shopping in this plaza, we decided to grab an early dinner here since my husband kind of skipped lunch and I had an early lunch. It just worked out perfectly that Fukagawa has an outdoor, dog friendly space that is covered but with glass ceilings, it will not give you shade from the sun during the day. We came here around 4:15 pm and sat at a table right outside. My husband went inside to let a server know that we would like to dine outside. That server brought out menus right away and asked if we would like any drinks, such as water to start. Then he came back right away with water for the 2 of us (I had a cup for our little girl so I just poured water in it for her). After looking over the menu, we ended up ordering: Breakfast Set C with grilled fish, $19.75 prior to tax- This breakfast set comes with steam rice, one egg (my husband requested sunny side up when asked how he would like his egg cooked), miso soup, fish (my husband picked mackerel) a side of cold tofu and pickled vegetables. I couldn't decide what I wanted, even though I wanted to try their breakfast, so my husband said he would order this and we could share. I liked the grilled mackerel and cold tofu. I think the amount of food was plenty for one person. My husband liked his food. Special Chicken Teriyaki Combo with Noodles, $24 prior to tax- I ended up deciding to go with a combination food that comes with 4 pieces of cut California roll, steamed rice, miso soup, salad, pickled vegetables and your choice of either udon or soba noodles. You can also pick hot or cold. I opted for hot soba noodles. The miso soup was perfectly seasoned and so was the hot soba noodles. Both really were just right for the cold early evening/ late afternoon we dined. The teriyaki chicken was more on the savory side. I thought it was okay but felt it was a little on the smokey side but my mom enjoyed it (I took some of the chicken and California roll home since this was a lot of food). ---------------------------------- (Total= $48.23 after tax, prior to tip) I really liked the food. Wait time for our food to be brought out to us was not too long and the portion size of each meal really is more than enough for one person, so I can understand why the prices are a bit high. Our server only came out once to offer us water but he never really came back to check up on us. Another lady, who brought out our meals did check up on us and was so nice to bring us hot water, She also gave us a refill after we had paid. My husband figured that since we were sitting outside that maybe this is why our server had forgotten about us. But they weren't really too busy inside... But anyway, I do like Fukagawa and would come back here again in the near future.
