Great food and service! It was our first time eating here on a recommendation from a Japanese friend. They have sushi, udon, soba, Don (bowls), and tempura. All which can be combos or added. The tempura is made fresh and exceptionally made with the right amount of batter. What I like best is the seasoning of the food. It is well balanced and not too salty or the overly use of msg. Having tried a lot of places in this plaza, we were looking for a good, new Japanese place that could accommodate two older picky Asian parents for lunch. Matsui fit the bill well with a big menu serving up classic Japanese homestyle dishes. I love that they also serve iced tea rather than water for a drink which was tasty and refreshing. On a random weekday there was no wait for lunch. Everything was great and prices were really cheap. Food came out fresh, quickly, and piping hot. There was a ~$15 lunch special that came with several pieces of sushi + a hand roll, a small bowl of udon (which we were allowed to sub for soba and make either hot or cold), tempura, and a salad. What a deal for a meal that includes sushi! The Katsu Don was delicious and also came out piping hot--the pork was juicy, the egg fluffy, and just the right amount of onions and green onions put in. Parking in this plaza is pretty easy (although the spots can be a little tight if you get parking anxious) and staff was super friendly. Decor inside is cute especially if you're a baseball fan! The restaurant interior is clean and the servers are super friendly. I ordered the lunch special which came with a choice of udon or soba (I went with the hot udon), tempura, salad, and sushi combo. It was around $14 for a great amount of food! The hot udon was so soothing with a very light broth. The tempura was crispy and not overly fried. The salad had a tart dressing that was refreshing with the rest of the meal. I didn't love the sushi, but I appreciated that there was a variety; I did really enjoy the spicy tuna! After shopping at Daiso, we walked over to this spot for a bite to eat. It's small but comfortable, decorated with baseball-themed tchotchkes honoring the player it's named after. I really enjoyed my grilled miso cod, rice, and miso soup--great flavor and good value. The servers were friendly and efficient, even though they were clearly very busy (it's a popular place with a line out the door). This 3 stars is just average food to me. I ordered the rib eye steak which is probably what not to get at this place. Udon and tempura seem like the items to get. Or even the soba. We got the Agedashi and that was really different but yummy. They put a broth and mushrooms in the dish . The matsui special dinner is good special to get. The tempura side is plenty if you don't need any carbs or sharing with others. I forgot you'll see the order is medium rare for the rib eye steak and you'll see my hit it was medium well well. I should have said rare for it to be medium rare. I did ask for teriyaki sauce but it was a dipping soy sauce not really teriyaki. I wouldn't order that again if I come back here. See my photos. The tempura is perfectly battered to be light and crispy! I loved the udon soup, it was warm and delicious. I feel like the soba noodles broth could've been more flavorful as it tasted light and didn't hold onto the soba when dipped. The karage was juicy inside and crispy outside. With the relocation of Mitsuwa Market, we don't come to this side of the town as often as before. Nevertheless, Matsui is our must stop place whenever we are in the area. The staff, some of them have been with the company for decades, are always friendly and attentive. I love their Manager Special Combo, with nigiri sushi, tempuras, salad, and udon/soba. The nigiri sushi are fresh, the tempuras are perfectly battered and fried, and both udon and soba have nice texture: not too soft nor too hard. Handrolls are also one of their must try items. I just wish they would open one store closer to the south side to Torrance so we can visit it more often. read more

Matsui has become one of go-to Japanese restaurants now because not only is the food delicious, it is reasonably priced and the portion size is enough to make me full. There is a reason why this was the only place with a wait in the plaza. My party came on a Sunday right around when they opened which was 11:30am and it was already at full capacity, so we had to wait about 45min before going in. Service was good, the food came quickly too and we were given iced barley tea which I really liked. My party ordered the Manager's Special and Katsu don combination as the main dishes with takoyaki and kimpira (burdock root or what I know it as gobo) as the appetizers. I got the Manager's Special which came with udon or soba (I got the udon), shrimp and vegetable tempura, 6 pc sushi combination, and salad. All that food for $17.75 was very worth, it's a good deal. The udon was hot and good, soup was flavorful but not salty while the udon had a good chew but not too chewy. For the tempura, I wasn't expecting to be a whole assortment of tempura considering the price. It included shrimp, pumpkin, eggplant, green bean, and carrot tempura! The sushi was also good and fresh, my favorite was the salmon one. The takoyaki was standard, good but nothing special. As someone who loves gobo, I'm glad this place makes it, the kimpira had a good spice to it. Overall, I definitely would recommend coming here and I will be coming back soon if I am ever in the Torrance area! I would probably come a bit earlier before the opening time though. 9.0/10 Everyone knows that Torrance has the best Japanese food. Now dare I say Matsui has the best ten don and udon in SoCal? I got: Complimentary Iced Tea (Not sure what kind) | M-7 Tendon Combination Special with Hot Tanuki Udon (天丼セットと饂飩) $15.25. This is an absolute favorite now. A lot of udon-eating done over the years but none that tasted like this one, at least not outside of Japan. It blew my mind. The udon noodles had a tender yet chewy texture with a slight springiness when bitten into. The broth was rich, flavorful and savory. And yes, even better than Marugame Udon. The tanuki udon here is better than almost all the places I've had in the States including Marugame Monzo, Meiji Seimen and Shin-Sen-Gumi. Although, that's not to say that Marugame Monzo and Shin-Sen-Gumi aren't good. The tempura was light and crispy with the shrimp being tender and the vegetables slightly crisp. The rice was moist and fluffy with a perfect amount of sauce drizzled on top. The Tendon really reminded me of the one I got at Kaneko Hannosuke (金子半之助) in Odaiba, Tokyo, Japan (お台場, 東京, 日本), so good. I have yet to try the Hannosuke in Mar Vista, Los Angeles (LA). This one was better than the one I had at Meiji Seimen. It's quite hard to find tendon at Japanese restaurants in the states. Everything was so comforting and I'm so glad I got this combination. All the flavors worked so well together. This is a lot of food for me, I wasn't able to finish either, ate half of each and took the rest home for later, still tasted good, however, I'd recommend either separating the udon noodles from the broth or eating it as soon as possible for the freshest taste. You can air fry the tempura. I wasn't able to find anything on their website regarding them using eco-packaging or their sustainability efforts, bummer. They're located in a shopping plaza with plenty of free parking in their lot. The inside is casual with cute wooden pillars for decor. There's plenty of indoor seating. Service is very friendly and efficient. I came on a Tuesday as a walk-in around 7:15 PM and there was no wait. I was seated almost immediately, ordered and my food came shortly after. The price is on point here! The quality is very good and for the price, the quantity is a lot! You know you are getting good value when you come here, but not just value, quality and quantity too. Comfortable, cozy, delicious, everyday dining. The menu doesn't change and they excel at every item I've tried so far, in my 7 yrs of regularly visiting/or to go ordering. The prices are reasonable - not cheap, but given $ on everything else has gone through the roof, it's solid value for the awesome food. And one of the Japanese food options that won't leave me hungry after $20/pp. :) The sushi is fresh, the tempuras are perfectly crispy, and the noodles are on mark. The service is EFFICIENT. At opening, they know a lot of lunch specials will be ordered, so they have a whole line up of trays prepared to go with salad and utensils, and they come flying out shortly after ordering. Staff is always friendly as well. The one thing I would want to see improved though, is the mop smell pervading through the restaurant at opening time. I love Matsui! My family has been coming here for years. I always order the same thing-- the handroll combination. You get three handrolls: spicy tuna, California, & eel. I always sub out the California for an extra spicy tuna. The quality of the fish is so fresh! Their udon is also solid, and Matsui is the only place that I'll order it. I love that they give iced tea instead of water! I think that's it's a barley tea, but I'm not too sure. Their service is also great & they're constantly checking on tables. My family and I came here for lunch on a Friday afternoon and we were definitely satisfied. I got the Hand Roll combination, which comes with somen noodles or udon, and 3 hand rolls. I got the hot udon. The noodles were soft and perfectly chewy. The broth was served hot and it was flavorful! For hand rolls, the options are: California, eel or spicy tuna. I got 2 spicy tuna and 1 eel. The portion was very generous! We also shared a tempura appetizer, which comes with 2 shrimp, and various veggies such as string beans, carrot, Japanese pumpkin, shiitake mushrooms, eggplant, and potato. We visited Matsui today, 10/14/2025. The service was great! The menu has a wide variety of noodle dishes, but very few non-noodle dishes. I don't do noodles, so I ordered the black cod. Which I have to say, tasted totally awesome. it was not fishy, but still flavorful and oh so tender. The fish is served with carrots & broccoli (and a blob of mayo) along with rice and miso soup. The carrots were soft, but firm, so even if you have issues with your teeth, the carrots are still really edible. The broccoli was cooked just done, so there was some firmness to it, but not really hard (and definitely not overcooked and wimpy). I had to give my miso soup away as it was too salty for me, but my mom really liked it. so, if you are salt sensitive, the miso soup may not be for you. There is no Tempura meal. so, if you want miso soup and/or rice with tempura, you have to order them separately. But, although the tempura was pretty good, what made the dish was the sauce. The restaurant does not take reservations, but, if you time it right, you may be fine. Be warned that the parking lot can be tight. read more

There was a group of six people who ended their wait and, luckily, we jumped to eight. The wait was a good 35 minutes. The place was crowded. As soon as we got seated, we were provide with the menus. They have a lunch special for $14.99 which really didn't look bad. It had everything on it. My friend ordered it. I had the tezo soba. Been wanting cold noodles for a while now. Hubby ordered the katsudon. Everything was delicious. Truly masterfully done. Oh, and you are automatically provided with cold iced tea drink. A cute place, baseball decorations everywhere.
