I learned about this salon in lunch today from friends and decided to give it a try immediately. As many Asians know, our hair styles have a different system, and are not what can be captured just by "inches" or "fade" or "Ivy League". To my surprise, this visit turned out to be the best haircut experience I've had around Chicago! Just stepped in, I began to love this place. The inside is bright and clean, with all the new dark leather chairs aligned. The people inside gave me a graceful welcome and led me to the back to have my hair washed. The wash was thorough and soothing. The most memorable part was the shampoo they use. It has a rich and sweet citrus scent, which made me feel like tasting popsicles. My stylist Ken is awesome. He is gentle and professional, and a great listener. Ken is adept at his skills and knows hair and styles well. He is patient and makes sure the hair is perfect on every corner and edge. Starting from Hong Kong, he has been working in NYC and Chicago for more than an decade. I can't be more satisfied with my new clean and refreshed look. In addition, the people in salon are well trained and they pay close attention to their services and body languages to make you feel at home. The store currently has a promotion of 20% off (and 25% off with a coupon). The original price for men's haircut is $30, and the discounted one is $24. Just moved to Evanston, and I've been going to same hairdresser in NYC for 6 years now so going into this I was freaking out. But luckily, I found Jeff and gave me an amazing haircut that gave me lots of compliments! I was able to make a 10:30am appointment the day prior to the haircut. Came in and was met by Jeff. He washed, shampooed & massaged my hair. My favorite part of a haircut! Afterwards, he asked how I wanted it cut. I showed him a picture of how my old hairdresser snipped it and he went to action. He explained what he was going to do every snip of the way and also gave suggestions. He was very meticulous. It was a great experience considering I was freaking out going in. I'm really picky about my hair. I don't trust any non-Asian stylists because of certain bad experiences in the past and I've been going to the same stylist back home in NC for over 4 years. This was the first time I got my hair cut while at school and I was actually pretty blown away by the quality of this place. Kami opened very recently and even though it's not in the most optimal location, the inside is very trendy and very new. I called and made an appointment with ease the day before. ** Note: right now they're cash only so I had to go across the street to the liquor store to get money from the ATM which was a bit annoying but I'm sure eventually they'll have a card machine hooked up ** They let me put my stuff in the back (lockers! So smart!) and then I had my hair washed. It was probably the most thorough shampoo I've ever gotten at a hair salon. The shampoo smelled really good (kind of sweet and citrus-Y) and then I got two conditioners put in. I think it was conditioner anyways. Regardless, definitely didn't rush through that, which was a pleasant surprise because I feel like most salons do. I didn't request a stylist when I called because I didn't know anyone there, so Ken cut my hair. ASK FOR HIM IF YOU CALL AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. He was super nice and actually cut my hair to the requested length! He also gave me the best blowout I've ever gotten in a salon; my hair literally looked the shiniest it's ever been afterwards. I read the great reviews about Kami Salon and scheduled an appointment for a hair cut for long hair. As soon as I walked in, I was well taken care off. They took my temperature and gave me hand sanitizer. I had a consultation with the hair stylist and later a hair wash. Jeff listened to me and provided recommendation for hair treatment. I came in for my first appointment with Ken today, and I can finally breathe a sigh of relief that I've found him! Ken is an amazing stylist; he is the owner of the salon, a transplant from New York City and Hong Kong, and he knows how to cut Asian hair! The price is extremely reasonable- pay in cash for a small discount. I've had my hair cut in Evanston at Art & Science, Salon Roula, Salon Lamia, & Danielle Mars. Kami is by far my favorite for less $$ and a superior cut. The staff are attentive and Ken spends a long time on your hair (wash and cut is always over an hour). I don't like giving semi-bad reviews but this salon really did me bogus. I paid over $1000 to achieve an all-pink hair and the first day I wash my hair, most of the pink dye came out and I was left with that blonde-orange color(the color from the bleach) I was so disappointed. I went in there two times(first time, I paid around $600-$700 just to get an ombré then the second time, I decided to do my whole head so an extra $300-$400). I understood that it wouldn't be cheap because since my hair was jet black, long, and thick and trying to go from black to pink, it'll take time and the money. BUT NEVER DID I EXPECT THE COLOR TO WASH OUT AFTER 1 TIME OF WASHING. So disappointed. Now, my hair is a perfect and beautiful thanks to another salon who fixed my mess. read more

I went to this salon for the first time for a simple updo hairstyle for a wedding I'd just flown into Chicago for, and what I got was NOT worth the price I paid. I ran exactly 6 minutes late and on the 4-minute past the appointment time, they called me to see where I am. I apologized and told them that as I mentioned when I booked the appointment, I was just getting into town and ran a few minutes behind, but I'm almost there. Once I arrive, they tell me to wait 10-15 minutes, which I didn't mind, since I'd ran late myself. At a later point, I cordially asked if they had the time to tone my hair color before styling. When the lady is washing my hair, I overhear them talking in their language and say "late" in a complaining manner. Really? I ran 5 minutes late and it's too much to simply ask for another service? You can just say no. They didn't have time and that was fine. Then, while curling half of my hair, she had her assistant take over so she could do someone else's hair for a bit. The assistant had NO idea how to use a curling iron, let alone curl. So I was left with half- curled and half-bunched up hair. She had first blew dry my hair, but the blow drying too was so poorly done that my hair was still somewhat frizzy and the curling iron did not help tame the frizz. The end product was a loosely-put-together bun and simple braids that 5 minutes out of the salon and the pins are coming off and the wind is making my frizz stand taller and taller. I paid cash since they had a 10% discount and asked if the stylist takes Venmo for tip since I didn't have more cash on me at the moment and they said no. Normally I'd feel bad for not leaving a tip. But $60 for this? Sorry, not worth it. read more

This is one of the worst haircut I ever got. One guy spent like half an hour with the dryer trying to curl my hair up a bit, which he failed, till I began to sweat and complain. Then my stylist Ken took a couple of minutes and give me a haircut without any layers. I told him to thin the bottom part a bit to make it look more natural, but he refused and got away with it through some talk. I can't believe this is a 40 dollar haircut. Ken did an amazing job, and the gentleman who shampooed my hair gave me the most pleasant scalp massage of my life. I paid in cash and received the student discount. He is meticulous and gives great advice on whatever hairstyle you choose.
