The service was great. We were promptly greeted upon walking in. Nice ambiance. We started off with the sampler which was great, it came with buffalo wings, some fried flour with chicken things that were similar to flautas and some tortillas chips with beans and other toppings. It was tasty. Hubby had tacos with fish and tacos with shrimp. My daughter had carne asada tacos. I had the carne asada fajitas with flour tortillas. The food was decent but the seasoning was a bit lacking.

This Kalaveras chain is located right across from the Long Beach Convention Center. I was staying at the Hyatt and it was very convenient to walk to. I made a reservation on a Saturday night but really didn't need one. There were 2 of us and they squeezed us in. We were very close to the table next to us. The decor was dark but hip. The music was so very loud though! The service was friendly but very slow. I got the empanadas which were decent. I got the salmon entree. Salmon was moist. Everything was just ok. I felt it was a bit overpriced. You're really paying for the ambiance and the loud music. Plus everyone around us was loud. It was stimulation overload.

Service was fast. Server was rather matter of fact/short with customers. My wet burrito was a bit salty. My 1st time here. I'll give it another shot. I thought it a bit pricey, for such a casual spot. The chips were warm & salsa ok.

Came on a Sunday night with a party of 8 and we were seated in less than 5 minutes. However, the service was a bit slow but justifiable since we had a large group. Ordered the Tacos Gobernador, and it was very filling and tasty, and the portion size was worth the price which was $22. Have been to the Torrance location and I certainly prefer this one since the restaurant is larger. The ladies restroom was also clean and decorative which was a highlight!

This did not live up to the hype. Maybe I caught them on the bad day then I realized what the problem was. Most people only come for happy hour which is the best time to catch their $10 margaritas on the rocks AND frozen. Frozen is the better option. It's way more bang for your buck... the food was on point hot and fresh! Now to the one .....the place is not clean. Coming during happy hour I would assume fruits are cut fresh and they are ready for a big crowd NOPE flys and nats all over the bar which explains the MOLDY STRAWBERRY she put on my drink. Then I glanced at the station and seen that these are not fresh and have been out a couple days. The food preparation is horrible and left out in the open not covered with the huge bar windows open.

Guacamole is a must. Fresh chips and salsa. I got the carna asada. Large portion and overall good flavor. The steak is not cut for you and I had to ask for a steak knife. Enjoyed the festive music and would return if back in the area

I've heard about this place which there's a location in the valley. I was in downtown Long Beach and noticed that they had a location here. And as happy hour was happening, it was a nice way to try it out. There was a sign outside mentioned HH specials with dishes at 7.99, not bad. It's a decent size restaurant located at The Pike in the heart of downtown Long Beach right across the street from The Convention Center. They have a small patio area along the front that also looks into the main bar area inside. We checked in with the host which we just wanted drinks and a snack. Bar area was self seat but if we wanted one of the hi-top table in the bar area, we would have to be seated by the hostess. Anyway, bar seating it was. Both the regular menus and HH menu were handed to us. There was one bartender working when we arrive. She was sweet but on the forgetful side. I'm sure she was busy with drink orders so that's a good reason. Later on someone did come and helped out as well. Drinks, the margarita and one of the frozen slush drink. Both at 10.00 for happy hour. Margarita was quite tasty and the frozen drink as well. They both had a kick to it so you taste the alcohol. Food, we shared the loaded carne asada fries. It was quite tasty with everything added to it. Meats were chopped up pieces and all tossed together with fries, chipotle sauce and pico de gallo. Not bad for 7.99. There was a few other plate options that sounded quite nice for HH. We just wanted that one drink but did have to ask a few time for another glass of water. Overall, it's nothing major. I'm sure people love it but it was just ok. Their HH slush drink was decent for the price which I give them that. It did pick up as there was a convention across the street so that brought people over. Bar food was decent for the price. I would probably come back for the HH drinks.

Always great service food, and ambiance even when its busy. I love the great customer service from hostess to waitress. Only bad part is finding parking at the Pike but they do validate. Must try the chicken mole and babbacoa omelet YUMMM.

Our server Izzy was super nice and made sure to check on our group while we were there. I ordered the wet burrito with half green and half red sauce. I loved the green sauce and needed up ordering a side of it to finish the other half. The shots we ordered were HUGE. Granted they were costly so we definitely got what we paid for. The location was beautiful and gave an amazing representation of the culture. If I'm ever in the area again I will definitely stop back in

    Dragon Roll

A spot for every occasion. Lit brunch with the ladies, Taco Tuesday, daily happy hour, birthdays, or date night. If you're looking for somewhere reliable with great energy, Kalaveras is it. The salsa had the perfect mild kick, exactly how I like it, and the chips came out hot, fresh, and salted. Nothing makes me saltier than unsalted chips. I've been here plenty of times and have yet to order something I didn't enjoy. Consistency like that deserves recognition! Of the three dishes I tried today: F*ck: enchiladas de camaron - definitely brings the bold and saucy personality. The shrimp were cooked well, lot of depth in flavor, and it's the kind of dish you crave again a few days later. Maybe not my forever pick, but absolutely one I want to keep in rotation. Marry: the barbacoa burrito - this was love at first bite. Packed with flavor, perfectly balanced, and hearty without feeling overly heavy. Every bite was just as good as the first, and if commitment issues weren't a thing, I'd order this every single time without even looking at the menu. Kill: the dragon roll - not bad by any means, it just had tough competition. It didn't stand out the way the other dishes did, and when everything else on the table is demanding your attention, something has to take the fall. Safe to say I'll be back... might add a side piece to the mix.

I said, "AYOOOO" This is a great place to grab happy hour after work. TV screens everywhere, beautiful wall paintings, and great vibes! The food is great. Just wish the portion size was larger for happy hour menu items. The happy hour margaritas are amazing! I sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly and quick. Plenty of seating indoors and outdoors! Parking can be rough since it's DTLB, but can park in the Pike parking structure for free with validation.

Came here after a convention and had an overall average experience. We weren't offered chips when we sat down, and although they do the picture-taking at the front, that wasn't mentioned to us either. We started with the taquito appetizer (three potato, two chicken). They were okay, but nothing memorable. We were able to order from the brunch menu, which was a plus. We had the huevos rancheros and the lechera French toast. The food came out in a decent amount of time, but we didn't get utensils for a while after it arrived. Service felt a bit disorganized overall. The check took a long time to come, which was frustrating since we were ready to leave. The food itself was just okay -- not bad, but not great either. Music and atmosphere was great. A little crowded probably due to the convention. Overall, it wasn't terrible, but it didn't really stand out. Probably more of a one-and-done for me, and I wouldn't go out of my way to come back.

My co-resis and I stumbled upon this place after our movie and fortunately for us, it was happy hour! The deals were AMAZING so we knew we had to sample as much of it as we could and luckily there were four of us. We were seated immediately but it was definitely really loud and lively inside. They even had a birthday song at a table nearby! Our server was overall good despite being really busy with other tables too. Food: Carne asada fries: Crispy initially, sauce was delicious, and a good amount of meat! Birria tacos: SO good, I could have gotten these just for myself and I would have tore them up. Buffalo wings: A classic! The sauce was delicious and paired nicely with their ranch Chips and salsa: Complimentary and my co-resis and I tore these up too! Overall their happy hour is such a steal at $8 an appetizer with large portions and I will definitely be back!!

    Do they do bottomless mimosas?

Yes, they do! Don't quote me on it, but I very briefly glanced at the menu and if I recall correctly, it was $20. They also do bottomless micheladas as well.

It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

We sat at the bar, and I expected to receive service from the bartender, but he didn't acknowledge us for the entire night. Instead, our server took our order. After a while, she informed us that the crispy rice we ordered was sold out. She mentioned that the bartender was supposed to let us know, but he never did. What made the experience more uncomfortable was that the bartender seemed to be giving most of his attention to the Caucasian customers on the other side of the bar. We were the only Asian customers there, and unfortunately, this left us feeling like we were being treated differently because of our race. The good food and drinks helped compensate for the poor service, so we decided not to let it ruin our evening. However, things got even more disappointing at the end. After I paid, I noticed that I had been charged for the crispy rice even though we never received it. When our server tried to address the issue, the bartender appeared to ignore both her and us, so we eventually left. I hope management sees this review and reaches out to me to address the overcharge and the overall experience. Overall, although the food and drinks were good, the service and the way we were treated left a very negative impression. Unfortunately, I will not be returning.

The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. Service for dining in was a bit lackluster, kept on having to call over the waiter and felt like I was losing him in the restaurant. Other than that, it was a good anniversary, thanks Viaje!

It's a IYKYK kind of place here. We didn't know about it as we were here meeting some friends for…read moredrinks. They made all the reservations. Honestly thought it was the bar that we came inside. First impression, why did we need reservations.... Since we didn't know the hidden entrance. Well, it's a cool concept once we entered. There's a dress code so be advised. What I found out was the entrance of the speakeasy was through a phone booth that next to the pool table of Roxanne's bar. Once reservations is made, you'll received an email with a password to enter. Enter phone booth and to connect to the inside and they'll open the door for you. We had the first reservations I believe they opened at 7pm. We were the first group to arrive. As it was my first time, we had ordered bar food and were waiting for it inside the main bar. So half an hour was used from our time limit. The speakeasy, dark and moody but perfect for the place. Special crafted cocktails by the bartenders which were great. They also have food as well, found out later. We did try the meat pie, which it was just ok. Basically an empanadas, the pickle veggies accompanied it was my favorite. It was good but nothing major to rave about. The drinks were quite nice and tasty. What they offered on the menu did have a load of good choices. Tables scattered throughout as well as bar seating. There's a piano which maybe used for live music. Overall, the moody speakeasy vibe was great. Friendly staff and bartender made some great drinks. What we had to snack on, the meat pie was just ok. They're very strict with the time limits. Once it's reached they'll let you know.

I expected to pay so much for cocktails that don't really seem balanced or designed with intent. It also took a very long time to receive drinks, the bartender seemed more into doing his sub par flair than getting drinks out at a decent time. Definitely not coming back, such a waste of money and time.

So this is a review that's been a *long* time coming (I've just been chronically overwhelmed for an…read moreequally long time.) I haven't been here often, but I *was* here right around when they opened, wherein I determined that the food ranged from quality but a bit overpriced, to just overpriced, a feeling I would still hold, generally speaking. Great vibe, solid service, but maybe a little pretentiously priced (and/or it's just stupid expensive to run a restaurant in this area, granted.) And with *super* pretentiously-priced cocktails, for how relatively simple they mostly are (if I'm gonna spend $18+ plus tip on a drink, I expect Baby Gee-level cocktails.) They also had an impressive wall of craft beer on tap, but also a bit pricey, especially compared to places not on 2nd street, so there was never a particular *draw*. But then I never actually finished reviewing it, because I'm super behind. Anyway, then also not particularly recently, they launched a happy hour, which at the time, especially for this particular part of Long Beach, was pretty stupidly good, with $5 decent sized smashburgers (6 with cheese, 10 with cheese and also fries), as well as $5 craft beer, pretty much all of them, including the fancy, exciting stuff (exciting if you're a nerd like me, the barrel aged stuff, for instance). They also had one specific half hour at the time, which I'd like to immortalize as a super fun idea, where one specific cheap but craft beer was some stupid price, I think like a dollar, but since they had a whole wall of rotating craft beer, a *different* specific cheap craft beer any given day. That's not relevant at all to my current review, but it was fun. Anyway, I still didn't write a review like a year ago when I took advantage of that happy hour, though I did take advantage of it a solid couple of times. Skip forward again to just a few weeks ago, I happened to be attending an event in the general area again, an event that was going to involve more alcohol than food and for which having a happy-hour-timed dinner in the area was going to be useful, so I figured I'd check out whether the happy hour was still there, and it was. At least as of a few weeks ago, the happy hour (3-6 weekdays) was still a thing, and it had gone up a whopping 55 cents per item. Ends up being effectively ~$17 plus tip for a quality smashburger, quality fries and a craft beer, though they didn't have as *many* of the fancy (barrel-aged or equivalent) stuff as they had the first time, they did still have some, and it was still $5.55 for any beer on draft they had. So happy hour wise, that's a pretty good price for this part of the country, I'd say. Obviously only since the burgers and fries *are* also absolutely quality burgers and fries. Not quite as wonderful as my gold standard smashburger at The Stache, perhaps, but still a great smashburger. My opinion on spending almost 20 bucks for what is effectively still just an old fashioned, hasn't changed, though. :p
