I was craving something sweet while at Mitsuwa and didn't want anything heavy or messy. I settled on some macarons from this small hidden spot. Most of the customers gravitate toward the popular matcha ice creams and the taiyaki but being lactose intolerant, I didn't want to chance it. Instead I walked past those food vendors and ended up by the Kai Sweets Cafe. Once I saw the macarons I had to try them. They also offer crepes and some drinks, which I look forward to trying next time. They have their own small seating area, convenient so you don't have to compete with other customers on the other side. This vendor is located toward another less popular entrance to Mitsuwa, so there is less foot traffic in this area, giving you a moment of relief away from the busy area by the other food vendors on the other side. The macarons tasted great. They had a crisp shell as is expected, with a decent amount of filling and most importantly they were not too sweet. The filling also had the correct thickness and texture. Overall what you would expect in a macaron you get, and consistently as well. I've sampled macarons from some other sweet shops and sometimes they end up being hit or a miss, sometimes both, even from the same shop! This poor quality control is not present here, thank goodness. Macarons are difficult to make, and it always makes me happy to find a shop I can depend on to satisfy a sweet tooth. Tried their green tea cream puff and compared to most places, the shell of the cream puff just isn't good. It may be because it was not baked fresh and after leaving it in the fridge for a long time, it hardens the shell. However, the cream inside was very good. It holds true to the taste of green tea and was just sweet enough to not become overpowering. The cold sensation of the filling was refreshing even though it was not the consistency of what the cream of a cream puff should feel like. We were leaving when we spotted this place so we decided to give it a try. We opted for the Crepe filled with Nutella, Strawberries and whip cream for $6.50. The crepe was made fresh and that's the good part but for $6.50 you'd expect more strawberries, not in this case sadly. It needed some more! Disappointing Experience ! ! ! I was waiting in line to order today and one of the workers asked me to wait. I waited for a good ten minutes with no one behind me. The workers ignored my presence and continued to take orders behind me; while I was in front of the cash register. Upon disputing, I mentioned to one of the cashiers that I was told to wait a moment before getting served. The original cashier told me to go wait in line again while I was already ahead of all of the customers who were behind me. The behavior of the cashiers were disgusting and should not treat people in a disrespectful manner. The workers behaviors were simply disgusting and rude! The experience here was disappointing! At 9:30AM on a Saturday, KAI Sweets Cafe was only 1 of a few vendors open for business. They were serving all their drinks. Food wouldn't be served until later. But that's ok, cause all I wanted was a drink. We ordered a couple matcha lattes and they were great. Hot and tasty. The woman behind the counter was very friendly. Reviewing the cafe separately from the donuts, since they are next door to each other. I think I've gotten bubble tea or crepes from here years ago, and for some reason I never stopped by again until last week. I've been watching this anime called saiki k and the main character is obsessed with coffee jelly. I had never had it and didn't even know if it existed here in the US, but decided to try to find it at mitsuwa. Luckily it was right in the display at Kai sweets! I was so excited and got one coffee jelly and a couple of the strawberry daifuku. The coffee jelly was way better than I expected! It's a little bitter and refreshing and that coupled with the heavenly vanilla soft serve they pile on top of the jelly is the perfect combination!! I highly recommend it. The daifuku were also very good, but i kind of wish there was an option to fill them with Nutella instead of red bean paste (I guess that would not be as authentic though). read more

Located inside Mitsuwa Marketplace. Plenty of seating available inside this restaurant/bakery. They offer dishes such as Curry Rice, Omelet & Rice and Hamburg Steak. There a glass case full of Japanese-style desserts. Full sized cakes, mini cakes, macarons, pudding, cookies, etc. Tried their macarons and pudding. Their puddings are excellent. Light and creamy. Loads of flavor. I appreciate that they weren't too sweet. A tad expensive but they were really tasty. The macarons were presented beautifully. The cookie was very light and breaks apart quickly. The filling was smooth, not too sweet and flavorful. It would have been nice if there was more of it. Super friendly employees who work hard and wrapped up our goodies neatly. This cafe is located next to exit/entrance of Mitsuwa Marketplace. I have never bought anything here before, but they certainly pulled me in with beautiful, colorful, tasty looking sweets. They have all sorts of cakes, macarons, cream puffs, etc.. And they take credit card (with minimum charge of $5, I think). What I didn't know wast that they don't just serve sweets, they had few "real" food like curry rice and omu-rice (omelet rice), which was a real surprise to me. The prices were really good too. They do have a nice sized seating area for those who decides to eat there. Since we just had lunch, we were looking to get some sweets to take home with. We decided to get some cream puffs. They had vanilla, green tea, and black sesame flavors. I spotted their mini-cream puffs that comes in a plastic cup, which reminded me of Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts. They are assorted flavors - so you get all three flavors in a cup. We also bought regular-size cream puffs, which were a good size, not too big, but not small either. They had good amount of filling, all tasty and sweet. The price was really good too. I would like to try some other sweets that they have on my next visit to Mitsuwa. read more

I always walk pass this tiny storefront on my way to the main attractions of the Mitsuwa market, i.e. the supermarket and food court. I never really give it a second glance as it just has a small little display case for a few average-looking pastries. However, this past weekend, after I finished eating my way through the food court and the new pop-up stands, I was walking toward the parking lot. I stopped in my tracks when I saw a kid carrying a tray with this delicious looking omelet with gravy. I begged the bf to stay for another round of food so I can try this amazing looking creation. I walked up to the counter and there were three people in front of me. No big deal, I thought, as I have been waiting in line for hours already. Every stand in this place had a line, and this was the smallest line I've seen all day. However, it ended up being the longest wait I had all day, and there were only three people in front of me! There was a woman in the front of the house, and a man in the back cooking, both looked like teenagers, while the older gentleman (probably the manager or owner) went back and forth like a maniac tried to help them both. Don't get me wrong, they were extremely nice, but looked incredibly stressed, and they appeared to have the least customers out of all of the stalls in Mitsuwa. Long story short, I ordered the shrimp omelet and rice. It was as delicious as it looked! The egg as fluffy as a cloud (if cloud tasted fluffy, not sure), while the sauce was the perfect combination of saltiness and savoriness. Lastly, the rice was well-cooked. The only letdown was the shrimp, which had no taste and was unnecessary. Overall, I highly recommend the omelet dish, just be prepared for the wait! read more

I gave one star because of poor customer service. I've tried their today's pasta and the mushroom steak. Their disposable chopsticks are very poorly made product. Chopsticks are cheap and broken, then I asked the cashier for an extra chopsticks. She asked me " did you order from us? what did you order?" I was thinking.. WTF? It's only an disposable chopstick?! I found this place inside of Mitsuwa and had to try since I love Japanese style crepe. They serve a variety of casual Japanese dishes and sweets. I ordered crepe with strawberry and banana and added vanilla ice cream. Their photo shows that it was on a plate so I was a bit surprised that they served in a paper wrap. I was anticipating this delectable dessert while shopping in Mitsuwa Marketplace. I opted for the crepe with bananas, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream, topped with vanilla ice cream. Sadly, I was mildly disappointed with my sweet treat. The crepe, although fresh tasting, was lacking warmth, which makes eating crepe in a cone-style so good. In addition, the ingredients that made up the crepe were just too basic. The chocolate sauce was simple chocolate syrup, which tends to drip excessively and leave an undesirable tartness taste. Desserts only: KAI's ice cream macaron sandwiches are twice the size of normal macarons and are pre-assembled. That immediately raised red flags, since macarons have specific storing needs to mature their flavor and texture; but I wanted to give this a try since I've never had one made by a non-French patisserie. They turned out to be duds, imposters, lies, what-have-you. Firstly, the "ice cream" is no more than a frozen cake cream. Secondly, they're frozen solid and near-impossible to cut with the provided plastic knives. Flavor-wise, the matcha tastes more natural and better than their blueberry. Both are sugary sweet, so it's hard to discern the flavor of the macaron shells--which could have been good and were at least uniformly shaped. If after reading this warning you still wish to try your luck, also note the blueberry has frozen blueberries in the center: this means you're biting into bland pulp. Likewise, the green tea has a center--of something that tastes like Hokkaido cream with the texture of condensed milk and is overwhelmingly sweet. I also tried their mocha almond roll cake with no satisfaction. The cake had plenty of potential, but was ruined by its dry crumb, either due to over baking or becoming stale. The almond mixture was the only satisfying aspect. It probably wasn't assembled day-of because the cream was also firm, giving it a greasy mouthfeel. I tried the mont blanc ice cream here after seeing it on many social media platforms. The mont blanc ice cream is pretty expensive for what it is. I paid about $8. I got the purple sweet potato with hojicha ice cream. I couldn't really taste any hojicha in the ice cream so that was disappointing. If you remember, ito en used to be in this spot before and their ice cream was much much much better. The mont blanc part, it didn't really taste like purple sweet potato either. It was pretty tasteless as well and not worth the extra cost. If you really have to, I guess try it, but you are not missing out on anything by not trying it. I miss the old ito en. I came to Kai hoping for cream puffs that could satisfy my craving for Beard Papa. However, these just aren't as good. I brought 3 cream puffs, two matcha and one black sesame for $2.50 each. They're pretty pricey for what you get. I bought them at the end of the day, so it was obvious that they weren't freshly made and had been sitting there for a while. The outer shell wasn't as crispy as it should've been, and tasted pretty stale. The filling on the inside for both the matcha and black sesame was pretty good though - light and creamy. I only wish the matcha had more flavor. However, they do have generous amounts of filling. Until I find a better replacement for my beloved Beard Papa cream puffs, these will have to do. One Friday night I was at mitsuwa and I decided to come back to try the cream puffs here. I went to do some grocery shopping first but when I came back, kai was closed. I was devastated but I saw someone was still in the kitchen, they still had 2 green tea cream puffs left and I called out to get his attention in hopes of purchasing it. I'm assuming he was Kai, a middle aged man came out and said the register was closed but I asked it I could give him the money and still purchase it anyways since the puffs were still there. He said no at first since he couldn't open the register but then came back out and asked me if I still wanted them. He began to wrap up the puffs and started rummaging around, for what I'm not sure but I was excited and had my money ready. He ended up giving me the cream puffs for free!!!!! Least to say that was the highlight of my day!!!!!! I was such a happy camper! Kai's food is not only sweet but his heart is sweet as well. Thank you so much !!! I happily ate my cream puffs but yes they are better than beard papas and the filling is so rich, the green tea is a kick in your mouth. I'm a sucker for this place. I've never tried their crepes but their ichigo daifuku is DELICIOUS!!!! They make it when you order so it's fresh. I want to try the pudding next. But my favorite from this place is there pork cutlet sandwich!!!!!!!!! You have to try it. It's soooooo good!!!! The bread and the sauce and the cutlet is perfect. The lettuce is crisp too. It's just simple and delicious. I've tried the chicken too, but the pork (in my opinion) is better. And their French fries....the best!!!! If you're a potato fanatic like me, you have to try it. It's my favorite French fries. If you're not down for a sandwich there beef and shrimp omelettes are great too. You can't go wrong with either. I've tried curry rice, omelet rice, pasta, salad and of course desserts here. Everything is so fresh and tasty, and reasonably priced. The curry rice looks simple but it actually has nice body of flavor and texture. The flavor and aroma will make you finish it non-stop. Salad is perfectly dressed, and you won't find a single piece of leaf not fresh. Pasta, they seem to use noodles from Hokaido. It's fresh, creamy and nicely blended with an Asian twist. As for desserts, we tried cream puff which we both thought better than Beard Papa. Also the pudding in the jar was better than the one I bought from Korean Town. What a hidden gem. Whenever we're at Mitsuwa we often stop here for coffee and desserts, some are seasonal. The place are usually less crowded than the food court area. We had a Cappuccino and an Americano, both were really good. Crepe and nutella was pretty decent. I am a fan of their Crispy Pork Cutlet & Curry. read more
