We decided to eat at Kahala Sushi. My friend posted that the monthly special was Katsu curry with tempura, my companion chose that. I wanted someone different so I ordered my standby Salmon skin salad and a second choice of Kake udon. I asked that my Udon be brought to the table after I finished my salad so the dashi would be hot. Our server was good about that. Really like this small place, but the establishment 's undermanned situation made it less than desirable to dine there. I hope they will at least install a bell or something in the reception area, so when customers come, they can ring for services; we waited for a while and nobody showed up, so we had to go to the kitchen area asking for services, one unpleasant dining experience. Kahala Sushi is located in Kahala Zippys on Hunakai St and Waialae Avenue. I was saddened by their closing during the Covid years (2020) and I thought that they would never reopen. Well it's February 2023 and Surprise! Kahala Sushi has reopened! They might not be what you would call a true blue Japanese Restaurant, but the food is consistently good. On the 1st day back I ordered the Chef's Special which I enjoyed. I haven't eaten udon in a long time and it reminded me of my Grandfather. He would always basically eat the same thing and I would eat udon with him when I was small, so comforting. The sushi was good and the ratio of rice to fish was on point. I'm not a sushi snob, but I do know what my palate likes. The Tempura is always great here, not greasy, light crispy batter. My wife always has the Miso Butterfish and Shrimp Tempura Teishoku when we dine in. It must be good because she's a picky eater, lol. After coming here all these years I finally decide to review Kahala Sushi. I don't know why, but hey I live close and enjoy eating here, that's all that counts. read more

I can't believe I've lived on Oahu my entire life and have never been to Kahala sushi! When my friend originally suggested we eat dinner here I was sour because I don't like sashimi/sushi or raw fish if anything kind. She told me they have Japanese food too which I love but my first thoughts were Japanese food at Zippys? I'll pass. Well, I ended up going and ordered a shrimp and vegetable tempura and miso butterfish teishoku which came with rice, miso soup and salad. It was so good! The vegetable tempura came in generous portions including a gigantic kombucha pumpkin. The shrimp tempura was good and the miso butterfish as well. We have had this little gem in our neighborhood for many years and we have only recently discovered it! I guess as creatures of habit we only ordered our regular Zippy's faves from Zippy's. We love Japanese food and definitely have our go-to favorites including now Kahala Sushi. This place is super convenient (you can order takeout on your Zippy's app) and the food was delicious! One wouldn't think to have "fine" sushi in a Zippy's restaurant, but believe it! You also better believe you will pay for "fine" sushi. I came here for dinner with my girlfriend and her friend and family. Her friend raved about the Unagi don, so we had to try it. Right? We ended up just ordering the Unagi don because everything else was very, very expensive. I'm seeing a Tamago nigiri go for over $5, Unagi nigiri for over $11, and why in the world is Futomaki over $10!? It's a futomaki! One of the most inexpensive sushi rolls anywhere. There should be a good reason for the higher prices. Perhaps the rent and overhead are high in cost? The Unagi don was over $23, which is definitely expensive. It's just Unagi on rice that's probably heated in the microwave plus a side of miso soup. The piece of Unagi was a thick piece, but it didn't have much taste. It was rich, but not savory rich. It also lacked the sweetness you normally get from the Unagi sauce, and really lacked the char taste from a grill. I've tasted better Unagi that's frozen and from China. Overall, the Unagi don was very average in taste, and a very boring and uninteresting meal. The miso soup was on the bland side and had zero aroma. The service was good with friendly and attentive servers, and the food took a little while to come out. When I think of Kahala Sushi, I would believe it'd be simple, straightforward, and inexpensive sushi since it is located inside a Zippy's, that serves somewhat inexpensive food. I use to frequent Kahala Zippy's restaurant and have never tried Kahala Sushi until recently. I've always seen long lines, people waiting for a table at Kahala Sushi, so decided to try it out. To start off, they are located inside Kahala Zippys, closet to the bakery side... there's about 11 tables and sushi bar seating so there's usually a line at night, so recommend going during the day. The menu is very simple... you can get donburi, sushi, sashimi, teishoku (set meal), and udon/soba. So far, everything on the menu that I've tried was so delicious. Reminds me so much of authentic food from Japan. Their tempura is legit too. Not local style with the thick batter but a light and crispy batter with a real shrimp. When somebody says take out party platter from Zippy's, I think about sliced and seared Portuguese sausage and chicken katsu. When somebody says take out sushi, I think about a Kozo sushi platter that is just OK as far as quality but very good in terms of pick up ease and convenient locations. Kahala sushi is a mix between these two. Decent quality sushi at a higher price. On New Year's Day, I sampled the 52 piece Deluxe platter. There were four nigiri pieces of ikura, tako, ika, ebi, salmon, hamachi, tai, eight maguro, and two cut up rolls, about 12 pieces, of California roll. Presentation was very nice with the wasabi molded into the shape of a leaf and a couple of lemon wedges carved into something Swan-like. There was the usual plastic greenery to separate the fish. The sushi chef behind the counter was nice to get our orders because I don't know where the servers were. He served us a mini appetizer..not too sure what its called. It had this green noodle mixed with salmon and mayo. OMG! It was sooooo good. It didn't take long when our food came. I love the chicken with this red and orange looking sauce. It was soooo goood! My friend seems to enjoy his meal but he said he rather get my chicken meal. My friend and I never had our tea and water refilled at all. Both our cups were left empty when leaving. I had the spicy ahi bowl here. It was the right size, with the right amount of fish and the right amount of spice. I think it was about $14-$15 dollars and came with miso soup. Raw Hamachi (young yellowtail) isn't my cup of tea but their fried Hamachi Kama ($17.25) is tasty! This meaty portion of the collarbone or cheek is prized for it's rich, fatty flavors. Kahala Sushi serves it with a huge pile of daikon oroshi and ponzu (I like mines with just the daikon drenched in shoyu). Tempura was good! My sushi on the other hand was lacking big time. Put together so sloppy! I ordered the ebi mayo masago sushi. It was $8.40 for 2 pieces!!!!! And it looked like it fell on the floor! What we discovered is: 1. If the sushi bar is full, you sit outside in the zippy's area. Odd. 2. They serve sake (even though it's not listed on the menu), but it's not very good. 3. The food is somewhat pricey, but you DEFINITELY get what you pay for! We ordered a bunch of different stuff and impressed the server by eating pretty much all of it. Just me and my little mom. Salmon Skin Salad: Not my favorite. The salmon skin was a little undercooked and rubbery by my taste. But the salad dressing was zingy! Softshell Crab Uramaki: OH HEAVEN. I went in to see if could make a reservation. The chef asked "for what time"? I said 5pm, he said, "don't worry, there won't be anyone here". I wondered why, 10 years ago, this bar was pumping, (I've moved to Vegas). I checked the menu, less variety and ridiculously EXPENSIVE. Unless you have money to burn, Id avoid Zippys in general. I had been here once before and hadn't returned there since, for good reason too. I had forgotten how junk the service is and even though the sushi is good, I'd rather spend good money on the whole experience elsewhere. I recently went to kahala sushi for a late night dinner (they close at 10pm, not 9:30). It was pretty empty and we sat at a little booth. Seating here is pretty limited, but I guess you could get take out and eat in the seating area right outside if it was crowded. We tried to order a salmon skin salad, but they were out of lettuce. The conversation went a little something like this: "We don't have anything with salad" "So can we order the teishoku (which comes with salad)?" "Yes, but it won't have salad" "Can you substitute something in place of the salad? Soy beans perhaps?" "We can give you soy beans, but you'll have to pay for them" Hmmmmm. Guess were not ordering that. We ended up getting the Kahala special which comes with a small variety of nigiri, tempura and udon. We also ordered the salmon battera. I wasn't quite sure what battera was, but it ended up being pretty good. It's pressed sushi rice with a layer of shiso leaves and salmon sashimi on top. There was also a weird jelly thing, but it worked well. Was it worth $13? Ehhh, it was ok. The Kahala special was good. The udon noodles were decent as was the nigiri. The tempura also had a decent selection of vegetables. Was it worth the $17? Ehhh... This place is weird. I feel like I'm in a zippys but they serve me decent sushi and I'm paying way more for food than if I just ate on the regular zippys side. They have specials that change monthly like the zippys specials, but the specials didn't really catch my interest. Came here for a quick post-graduation lunch since it was nearby, open, and convenient for the most part. It's been over a year since I've been here last, and sadly, the quality has gone down. The waiter was attentive and gave good service; it was the food that disappointed. I ordered the sashimi and sushi combo, most of which was good. The portions of fish were large and thick, the fattiness of the fish made for rich bites. Oddly enough, the salmon nigiri and salmon sashimi tasted different - the nigiri was fishy therefore not fresh while the sashimi was not fishy. I could tell the sashimi were previously frozen, and I could look past that, but the fishiness of the salmon nigiri threw me off, especially since I ate it before eating anything else. We had reservation at the Kahala Zippy's earlier tonight for 5:30pm but we were informed that there were only 2 servers. I was with my boyfriend and his family including his grandmother who's in the wheelchair. We couldn't stay out too long and wait for our food in 2 hours and so we decided to check out Kahala Sushi which is only steps away. We were lucky enough to get seated and served right away by our server. Kahala Sushi always serve a monthly special and so I tried out their July special which is the Spicy Salmon Poke with Tempura Donburi. Everything about this donburi is delicious with perfectly deep fried vegetable and shrimp tempura, fresh spicy salmon poke, and let's not forget that moist jasmine rice. This dinner was very filling and satisfying. My boyfriend on the other hand had the 2 choice teishoku. He ordered katsu and salmon shioyaki that came with his selection of potato salad, rice, and miso soup. He basically scraped off every food in that food tray which means he liked it! :) If ever you're in the Kahala area, go into Zippys and there you will find Kahala Sushi. I come here every time I visit home with my parents. This is probably the most under rated sushi place just because its located inside a zippy's. The sushi quality and portions go far for the price. Where can you find a place that blankets the rice so you cant see it? I usually go with the Hamachi Don but if I'm still super hungry I'll order some Uni or Salmon sushi. I have to admit that this place was better than I had assumed it out to be. Being that it shared space with Zippy's, the thought of it being just average food at a high price kinda irked me a bit. I knew Japanese food was already pricey, being in Kahala kinda upped the ante a knotch. I didn't sit down to eat, but had take out. Just to try. The hostess was nice and inviting, so that was a good start. Waited a good 10 minutes before receiving my order and paying. As far as the ambiance is concerned, it was still connected to Zippy's.
