Kabab King is an old establishment that's core to Jackson Heights but it feels like it's just been getting more dilapidated over the years. While I still stop in once in a while to pick up chicken seekh kabobs and naan for a good price, I definitely wouldn't recommend sitting upstairs to eat. The food is presented so sloppy and doesn't look appetizing. For instance, the chicken tikka masala had a pool of oil on top. The waiters don't pay any attention to the tables so good luck if you need a utensil or something. And it really just doesn't feel that clean. read more

I came here a few weeks ago on a recommendation of a coworker. I got the beef paya, beef haleem, and one beef kebab. The total was $20 on the dot. The service at the ordering counter was interesting. It was hard to understand the guy taking my order and I got skipped a few times before I was allowed to order. Whatevs. Foodwise, I unfortunately didn't care too much for the paya or haleem. The haleem actually was too smooth in consistency, and the flavor was good, but I didn't have anything to dip in it. The paya I thought would be spicier but it wasn't. There was not much meat in the dish at all, just a bunch of large bones. I felt it was a waste, but then again I don't think I understood how it was meant to be eaten, so perhaps that's my fault. I took my friend while we were at Jackson Height to grab a bite. We decided we will try their Lamb chops, Haleem and Nehari with Garlic Naan. I was So Disappointed, after waiting for 25min to 30 min we got our lambchops and felt like they were not fresh off the grill, it was not as warm as it should have been. But that's not why I am giving a 2 star. The Nehari was Rock SOLID and when shown to the waiter, he said the guy must not have warned it up enough and said he will replace it. One of my best friends swears by Kabab King. This is the same friend who swears by Jackson Diner for authentic Indian cuisine. Well..his words of wisdom didn't fail me when I ate at Jackson Diner..so I figured I'll trust him on Kabab King too..Loll One night, my boy and I went on a food run to Jackson Heights and ended up at Kabab King. Place is tiny and narrow..and when its packed with people (which happens quite frequently throughout the day), it can get quite uncomfortable inside. I do agree with my man Jando, that the cleanliness inside is questionable. And my boy does confirm that assumption. He says, "I wouldn't get the desserts that's made here bro. I used to live nearby back in 2015 so when I went to NYC again this March I wanted to stop by and grab some things for nostalgia. At first the signs are not really clear with saying it's on the second floor but it's not unless you dine in so make sure to check that. Just for background sakes I'm a native Hindi speaker who has lived in India for years and is very familiar with the cuisine. At first they tired to make me buy more food than I wanted and explain to me everything which just wasted my time, but I ended up I just ordering one chicken roll and 4 chicken kababs. Then I asked them to put it in the box instead of wrapping everything in aluminum foil cause I was flying back in a couple of hours. That's when the owner or some one came up and talked to the server behind the counter. He made fun of me in Hindi assuming I won't understand but I did and I felt extremely humiliated. I did only converse in English at the shop but I felt discriminated and extremely uncomfortable. First they wrapped everything foil so didn't even pay attention to what I asked and the food was also very bland, I could get better food at the frozen section at any Indian store. The "Karhi roll" was just a piece of naan with lettuce and a chicken kababs. And the kababs were really bland and oily. And when I went to pay I had to wait cause the lady was taking some call and paid zero attention to me which was really unprofessional. The ambience is average it felt old and dated without if the staff being rude. Overall I would not suggest this place and I'm definitely not coming back ever. The amazing part of this experience is that it's open at 10 am on a Saturday and easy to get to by bus and/or subway. I love passing by this place many times and peeking in to see huge quantities of families eating here. As I walked in, I noticed the smells of onions and oily peppers filling the air. Whoo hoo! I have to say that if you want affordable South Asian cuisine all under $10...this might just be the place. The kebabs ranged from $2 to $3. I ordered a lamb and a chicken one. The kebabs were flavorful. Served scalding hot on white styrofoam plates. So the first floor is not a great place for any intimate gathering especially the first date. I'm still not sure what some of the menu says. There was a ton of people in here eating breakfast. I recommend that you get the strong tea. One thing that is super cool is that the upstairs part of the restaurant if you come in the afternoon. They have elegant chairs with cushions, and you feel a posh experience with chandelier and amazing fancy tables if that is what you are into. I have met more hospitable people in my lifetime, but it's okay. We never truly know what individuals are dealing with. Oooh one noticeable downside was the bathroom. Its because of places like this that I have fallen in love with Jackson Heights. The place is not dingy, but cleanliness could be questionable here. Lunch time is the best, but I have a feeling few will be able to try it. I won't lie though, of the couple of times that I've had eaten here I've had to make serious trips to the bathrooms. The mango lassi and meat samosa were perfect! I also tried the chicken kabob and naan and it was good. However unfortunately the hakka noodles I had weren't too impressive. The chicken karahai was STALE! And not chicken karahi, just regular ( and terrible)!chicken curry. Two stars for the behari kabob and chicken tikka. Everything else was terrible, including the service. How do you have 10 servers around, and seven tables, yet we had to flag people down to place an order. We were a party of 7, yet you gave us 3 plates, were we meant to share? When asked, it took you 10 minute to get three more plates. I can see why Americans would be turned off to this place b/c it is very traditional and spicy! It felt like I was in a different country when eating it, makes me want to visit Pakistan. If you have a kid the kebabs won't be good b/c they are too spicy and have lots of herbs cut unevenly. Other than that it was very rustic and as an open minded adult I was extremely impressed. I don't eat meat, so their Tandoori Fish was recommended... IT WAS AMAZING!!! Freshly cooked, fire grilled deliciousness. My father was too happy to not care about re-considering paying them the full amount for food that arrived late. No one got to eat the appetizers WHICH WE PAID FOR and when I called the restaurant, they had said the men left 15 minutes before appetizers were to be served. The venue was located in Garfield New Jersey. They were coming from QUEENS NEW YORK. I suspect they were also fielding my father's calls because he tried to call them multiple times but no one picked up. They picked up my call because I had never called them before.
