Drove all the way here from Boston to try this out! And must say, was very impressed with the food here--it was well worth the drive indeed. Have tried many of the Korean restaurants in Allston and this, K Restaurant, seems to outrank them all! As for service -- indeed you pay first, but was a bit confused about the server/front desk who pretty much tell you to order before seated (choosing your own table), take your order, serve you with all the food, etc -- literally she handles all the customer service stuff -- wondering why she did not appear at pleasant or smile at all. Don't get me wrong, fully aware of wide range of personalities -- some appear more excited and enthusiastic than others others -- even without the the usual tipping at the end, and especially with the tipping at the end. Here, of course you pay -- and finalize your tip or no time before being served with your food, but still the server did not appear to greet or show those standard pleasantries expected all common in America ... She wasn't rude or anything. It just seems like she's not happy being there. Any event, just some thoughts here. Would definitely be back. The food seemed good at first, but the waiter was rude and appeared upset with me for no reason, which made me feel unwelcome. The bathroom situation was also frustrating--they told me I had to walk around the plaza to use it. I love this place to pieces! I've not had a bad thing here, though the standout dish by merit of our order history is the spicy pork bulgogi. The bibimbap are pricy, but very good. We did dine in on a weekday night and the food was good. They were busy with mostly take out orders and a few dine-ins. You order the food at the counter and they'll bring the food to the table. They have self service hot tea and water. We got the Korean vegetable pancake, chicken fried rice and bibimbap with beef bulgogi. The vegetable pancake was ok, it had more batter so it was more fluffy than crispy. The bibimbap was good. The sauce bottle is at the table so you can add as much as you would like. The fried rice was simple, but still good. They also give complimentary miso soup, however no other side dishes like most Korean restaurants. i WAS a regular here. Unfortunately, I had to stop coming here due to the extreme rude behavior from the girl who always works the register. It made me so uncomfortable watching her interact with customers throughout the many times I've visited. I kept going back because I enjoyed the kimchi, however they changed it and now tastes store bought. Also, everything is extremely expensive. I grew up in Alaska where there are several great Korean restaurants, so I am rather picky when it comes to Korean food. Unfortunately the North Shore is a desert when it comes to Korean food, and K Restaurant is the only option that I know of. Both times I've been here have been underwhelming. This is not a typical sit-down restaurant, so the menu is rather limited. You have to order at a counter and a server will bring the food to your table. Unfortunately you don't get any banchan, which in my opinion is one of the best parts of dining at a Korean restaurant. The food is palatable but not especially enjoyable. The best thing I've had here was the spicy rice cakes. The portion size of the spicy pork bibimbap was good but the meat quality was subpar. I think I'll venture into Boston the next time I want Korean food. If you're new to Korean food and want to try it then this is a decent place, but otherwise it's not great. read more

This is a no frill, family run restaurant. Food was great, cleanliness was maintained. The complementary Corn Barley tea was perfect for a cold December day. This review is for the area. Being Korean, I had an opportunity to have Korean food all over the place. Having Korean cuisines in LA, New York, Georgia, in Korea... Etc. Is it mind blowing epic Korean food? That is a flat out No. but if you are in the north shore area and craving some Korean food, this might be your spot. I think one of the best parts about this restaurant is that there's no frills, it's like a food court style Korean food. The kalibi soup, was well seasoned, I would have liked it a little bit less sodium infused, but I think for the general populace the seasoning was spot on. Also we had a order of the kalbi, it came out sizzling on a cast-iron plate. The seasoning was a bit on the sweeter side, but had a good healthy portion, and it was delicious. Final thoughts. It's definitely not the most amazing Korean food, but if you happen to be in the North Shore area and craving some Korean food. There are times when a place just gets it right... if I didn't live on the South Shore I can see myself frequenting this establishment. Don't get me wrong, though I live an hour away, I'll still go make the trek on occasion. That's just what foodies do. What better place to start than with how unbelievably clean this place is. I mean completely spotless! It isn't just the dining room either! On the way to the washroom, you pass their equally spotless kitchen! Modest seating for a location like this. While they are takeout centered, they have real plates, flatware, stoneware, etc. Not only that but with some of their dishes this is even better! Especially the rice dish in the stone bowl (to have next time!) They bring your food to you and bus the table. Speaking of their service: among of the best I've seen in a long time. It wasn't just "quick and polite" as I usually write... the staff are genuinely really nice, almost like your good friends! They happily talk about their dishes and the likes. They are passionate about what they do. Another thing: the menu is brilliant! Not only is it very well-organized, but each dish has an accompanying photograph. Descriptions are perfectly understandable, but seeing an actual (not stock) picture of what you're planning on getting is invaluable! Free tea and water station is a nice touch too! Now, about the food! (By the way, they don't use MSG) They make everything from scratch, and therefore comes out fresh and piping hot! We started off with the Spicy Fried Chicken, always one of my favorites. In the past, too many places call it spicy, but the capsaicin detectors don't move, at all. This sauce had a pleasant spice but nonetheless will clear your sinuses better than if you Hoovered them. Additionally, while sweet, the sauce wasn't overly saccharine, having tangy and savory notes. The chicken was tender, and of course, fresh. Kimchi - This is a Korean staple I could not pass up. It was crisp, flavorful, and added a nice amount of crunch and freshness to the meal. However, kimchi has a unique flavor that isn't for everyone. Short Rib Soup - You know how you order clam chowdah somewhere and they bring it in an English tea-cup? Not the case... these soups are full meals! I had the short rib soup. This one is very intimidating. The broth is pleasantly mild, with flavorful meat, and other mild, pleasant stuff. What I found most surprising (and great) was the salt level... it was spot on! Too many of these kinds of soup way overdo it on the sodium chloride, not here. Finally, the Grilled Pork Ribs - Pure, sizzling awesomeness. You can tell by the dish still boiling it is fresh as can be. The meat slides right off the bone and is tender as can be. Absolutely recommend this place. Hidden gem of a restaurant located in a strip mall. There's plenty of parking. Love the free hot barley tea with unlimited refills. This is self serving though as is cold water. When you are ready to order, you go up to the front desk and place your order and pay first. I haven't quite figure out the tipping system yet. There is a tip jar up front also. I have done both, pay tip up front or I would pay cash tip upon leaving at the table for the bus boy. After ordering you take a seat and the waitress will bring out the food when it's prepared. Food overall is superb. I highly recommend their bimbap where the rice is served in heated stone bowls. I had the beef bimbap while my brother had the spicy pork bimbap. Both were delicious. You mix everything up and add the spicy red chili paste sauce found at the table for extra heat. The spicy chili paste sauce is not as spicy as it looks. It's more of a mild level heat. If anything, it's more sweet than it is spicy. The bimbap also comes with a small side of broth. This is somewhat common with Asian restaurants where a dry noodle entree or rice dish is served with an accompanying bowl of broth. The kimchi chigae is fairly decent as well as the gamchatang (pork bone stew with potatoes). The kimchi chigae has a slightly sour broth due to the kimchi base soup, while the pork bone stew has a stronger pork flavor with a nutty and starchy broth from the potato and the crushed seed. Also has the beef and radish stew which was much simpler in flavor, not spicy at all. My overall favorite however is the seafood soonduboon which is a spicy soft tofu stew. I recommend the spicy fried chicken. The batter is light and the meat is very tender. It is not at all spicy but mostly sweet. My son lives this dish. The Kalbi we ordered was a bit dry but the flavor was all there. The stir fried kimchi and tofu dish with spicy pork as well as the spicy squid have similar flavoring of red chili paste and fish or soy sauce flavor. The spicy pork entree also. Most entrees come with a bowl of rice and small portion of house made kimchi so be sure to ask before ordering extra sides of rice and kimchi. Overall, customer service was great all three times we have had dinner there. First time we went around dinner time on a week night, it wasn't packed at all. There was only one other table when we were there but a lot of take out orders. We went again on a Wednesday night at 6:30 pm and the restaurant was packed. It was busy and took good took half an hour to get our food but it is well worth the wait. The third time we went at 8:15pm and once again, the restaurant was also packed with dine in and takeouts. Looking for great Korean food on the Northshore? This is the place to go! The restaurant was simple and cutely decorated and the ordering process was simple, you would go up to the counter and they would bring out your meal once it was ready. I ordered the Spicy Seafood Udon and while it wasn't a traditional Korean dish it was super flavorful and could fill me for probably lunch and dinner. This is a good lunch spot since the turn around time isn't too long and you don't have to wait for a check. I will definitely be back and I can't wait to try other things on the menu. A few people that I went with ordered the Bibimbap and it looked absolutely amazing. The huge serving size could been eaten over multiple meals and if I go again this is something I will be getting. I'm really quite sad to be writing this update, but it needed to be done. I can no longer in good faith stand by a 5-star review when things have clearly changed for the worse. Y'all know how much I loved and supported this place before and all throughout the pandemic, but I also recognize that speaking the truth as a customer can help motivate positive change from their end. About a month ago, I returned home to the North Shore and was excited as I had always previously been to pick up another hearty meal from K Restaurant. But, it was not to be: it seems like the restaurant may very well be under new management and, with it, new policies. The food is still the same in terms of taste and quality but, man, their portions are now dismal. More than anything, I feel nickel-and-dimed where previously I had been so grateful for their generous portions that I always felt compelled to tip just as generously in return. I knew something must've changed when I was greeted not by the usual lady at the counter but rather a young man in a cap and received a spicy chicken order with two crinkled radish rounds instead of the perennial carrot slice and broccoli floret. I hate radishes. Apparently, it was a bad omen. As soon as I opened my containers of soondubu (silky tofu stew) and bibimbap (rice bowl), I noticed something was off--all the food seemed somewhat drained of its signature red color. It didn't take me long to realize that this translated to less grease and, while I would normally have appreciated this, I subsequently deduced that the dearth of bright red bubbles really entailed a lack of meat. Where previously the pork soup had contained almost as much if not more meat than tofu, now there were perhaps five measly slices of meat under a similarly reduced portion of tofu all sitting in what was effectively just a big bowl of empty broth. The bibimbap, which to be clear was already not particularly cheap, now really was just a rice bowl--as in, a bowl of rice. One would've surmised, perhaps, that the chefs would've opted to increase the amount of low-cost veggies in the dish to mask their having shaven off a solid 70% of the meat portion (you heard that right) but, no, they didn't even care to add a substantial amount of vegetables. Whereas previously the bottom inch of the rice in the bibimbap takeout container would always be stained a neon red from the spicy pork marinade, this time the rice was completely white. There was not even enough meat to coat some of the rice with oil. I gladly gave a $10 tip in my naïve excitement before checking the order, so this feels even more like a stab in the back. I would've added pictures to show what we ordered, but unfortunately I didn't get around to it this time. Trust me, I'm the last person who'd want to criticize this awesome restaurant, but I need to say it like it is. K Restaurant, you just lost a loyal customer. Apparently K is under new management/ owner. I've been a regular customer here, so are most of my employees since this is one of a very few good Asian restaurants in the area. The food quality has been drastically decreased, especially in terms of protein quantity. Udon or rice is really just udon or rice (with a very few slices of meat or seafood), and the price is definitely not cheap here. The menu is pretty much the same as it was but the taste is slightly different. I'd come back for another try but it kind of upsets me that my only favorite Korean restaurant in the North Shore is fading out my list. read more

Picked a freezing day to go here, but it was so worth it! Outside of Korean food made by my family and food in Korea, this place is the best I've ever had. So good! I posted a picture on Facebook, and my relatives who have never been to the US mentioned that Korean food looks tasty in the US. Ordered soondubu jigae, bulgogi, and gun-mandu.
