ATMOSPHERE: The pub is like me looking at bra ads--- all wood. Sometimes it can be cold (the windows are often open for fresh air), and often it can be loud, especially Monday and Wednesday night or if the Big Red Bus shows up, but for the most part it is the chillest, coziest, friendliest pub in Long Beach, with at least three different games on, and/or a neutral iTunes playlist running low. Freshest dartboard in town. (Check for Paint Nights!)
SERVICE:
To be honest, service suffers when they get super busy (especially during the free lottery nights*), so get ready to deal with that if it is packed, but staff is nice, and we especially like Dan who is there 4 days a week, Ryan, and Kristen (who does flowers). Their drinks are so stiff they must own stock in Uber. Owner George was the best host anyplace anywhere... and he will be missed dearly.
WHY IS IT SO BUSY ON MONDAY & WEDNESDAY NIGHTS?
no-catch, free Lottery nights on Monday and Wednesday. My bae has won $400, and my name has been called three times ($1000) but I wasn't there to collect and my name goes on the Loser Board. Just like at high school. (Stupid principal)
LOCALS:
Super friendly and chill, unless you're a Ducks fan.
FOOD: Except for the various daily specials (listed below) and the $5 weekday breakfast plate, you will not be thinking, "Wow, this is cheap", but the food is, in fact, excellent. (OK, I don't like the wilted side salad or the mussels, let's get that out of the way). The best dish is the spicy potatoes appetizers, which I call "George's Balls": With the crumbled bleu cheese, generous ranch dip, and tangy wing sauce, they are tastier than the wings with far less bones! George's Balls is top three appetizers on Second Street and the one I most recommend to newbies who come in. Their chicken fingers are very unique, very long, spindly, and extra crunchy. They make their own bread (with breakfast) that has a unique texture, so ask for it if you have breakfast. It's so good. Best bread pudding. The onion rings are to die for--- literally. Their turkey burger has a sausagey taste that makes it a cool alternative than the regular burgers. The best fish tacos in California according to my wife. Stellar brussel sprouts w apple presence. Corned beef sandwich has a yum apple-horseradish sauce. The Irish Nachos are great, but a sodium bomb. I sometimes get the build your own sub (the best value), the gut busting BBQ Bacon Burger, or the underrated breakfast burrito. And the food comes out all Food Networky, sprinkled with paprika or parsley or sauce drizzles.
SPECIALS:
MONDAY: get a half-price entree, and eat late to hit the raffle. Look for the half price beer selection. TUESDAY: get the all you can eat pasta, with their thick but crispy, buttery garlic bread. Get the pint of selected beer and keep the glass! WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: Check the website. SATURDAY: The French Dip is $4 off... order it "Carey" style (he's that drunk hockey player smoking outside) with garlic bread instead of regular bread for a small up charge. SUNDAY: Nobody can touch KCB for mimosa refills on Sundays... Do not miss Sundays! George was very generous and downight relentless on the refills, like a new water boy. He would refill it as you are taking a sip. His wrists were probably super strong from all the refills... even stronger than me with my bra ads.
REST IN PEACE, GEORGE! WE WILL MISS YOU FOREVER! read more
