Inside is your standard bar, but their draft beer selection is fantastic (Victory, Saranac, Long Trail, Flying Fish are only a few of the beers on tap) and their food is awesome. I have lived in Montclair for six years and have been to Jake's a lot but I've noticed recently that the food got much better. I had good tacos of the day and the pulled pork with fried yucca and chimichurri. If you haven't been there in awhile, maybe give it another shot for food and drinks. read more

Nice local bar with great outdoor smoking/hang out area. Live band nights (unfortunately $7 cover on these nights) which is I suppose used to pay for the band. Drink deals are good 3 beers $5. Plenty of dancing room, but not much dancing goes on. Mostly just watching the band when they play. When there isn't a band playing I usually tend to leave. I had a surprise 40th birthday party for my sister here on November 10th. I couldn't have asked for more. Everyone I came in contact with was so helpful from start to finish. Especially Patty my manager, Nancy our hostess, and Lauren our server. We had the backroom that comfortably fit our group of 40 people. Patty was always available if I had any questions or needed help with anything at all starting with my first phone call to book the event. I was able to get in early to decorate the room and Patty helped me with some of my decorating ideas. I couldn't have done it without her. The food was excellent. Kudos to the chef. All of my guests had nothing but great things to say about the food and service. Nancy and Lauren were top notch that night. The service was amazing and they always checked in to make sure everything was running smoothly. I would recommend Just Jakes to anyone actually I already have. This has to be the worst service as a consumer that I have ever had at an eating establishment. After waiting 15 minutes for a drink, 25 for Buffalo sauce, and 45 minutes for a check (on a Monday night I add), I will never return to this bar. You can't go wrong with Jakes. It's bus accessible since it's in the heart of Montclair; they have deals pretty much EVERY SINGLE day. It's not so much a Montclair High reunion as Egans, which is cool. They have two pool tables, a dollar a game (bring quarters). They also have shows every Friday. I haven't gone to a show yet since I'm stingy and there's a cover. But as I said you can't go wrong with 3 for 3 Millers on Thursdays and $2 drafts on Tuesdays. Juuust sayin'... read more

Overall, this place was good. I guess I'm critical but a good burger seems like the staple of great food.. My husband had the juicy burger & it wasn't good. He said the taste was just off. I am a long time resident in Montclair and have supported Jakes from its origination. I am also a staunch supporter of local shopping. Recently, my son and I enjoyed a quick afternoon of drinks and wings. The service and the wings were great. Upon entry the manager alerted me to the requirement to wear a mask. i complied. When I went to the restroom and took my mask off just before walking to our outdoor table the manager followed me out and began yelling at me about the requirement to wear a mask. He kept on yelling at me until I finally had to respond. Upon leaving I made an attempt to apologize for my apparent violation of policy and state guidelines. He had already taken a scan of mine and my sons ID and we are heretofore banned from Jakes. I would like to have a conversation with the owner/s of Jakes to rectify this situation. The manager was unmanageable. I would love to see this establishment survive. read more

I found out about this place while at MSU & would always come for their 3 bottled beers for $3 (now $5) but I'm a regular now. Best nights - Trivia Tuesdays, Beer Pong on Thursdays (younger crowd), and live band on the weekends (always good music). I Never had a problem with any of the employees here and they are all down to earth (but definitely seen them be a-holes to deserving drunks haha). They also have an outside patio, pool table, back room & lots of tvs for sports. Good beer selection, mixed drinks are always tasty with a kick and awesome prices. Happy Hr / early evenings / off nights is very laid back, mixed group of all ages & types - not too loud or crowded, good to sit and hang out for a few drinks. The night-time (usually their popular nights Thurs to Sat) they have entertainment, it gets darker, louder and wild - They move the tables to open up the room because it can get really crowded and open a second bar. Still a diverse crowd but more young. food - think PUB/BAR food when ordering and you won't be disappointed (I think they serve food until 11PM?). This place is definitely more a bar than a restaurant, so order accordingly. They have awesome buffalo chicken, burgers, sandwiches, etc. It's more of a "Hey lets go grab wings/ apps & a few beers" kind of place so don't come to the neighborhood bar looking for an exquisite meal or brunch? lol... Where do I begin! Our server was overwhelmingly kind and had great knowledge of the immaculate menu. My wife had the Chicken fingers and I had a quesadilla. The drinks were poured with a kind hand and the bar staff seemed kind. I played pool for three hours while my wife danced to the variety of hip hop and r&b! Came here on a Friday night (unknowingly) to a live band. The cover charge was $7 or $8 (got too twisted to remember, hahah). I've gone to Just Jake's for a few years. The food is generally very good but the menu has gotten kind of boring lately. The specials dishes are pretty interesting, but the regular choice of fare is nothing extraordinary. The wait staff has ALWAYS been outstanding and friendly. The outdoor patio is nice in warm weather and pretty isolated from the street. There's a pretty cool happy hour with good drink specials. Thursdays are jam packed with a young crowd, that have gotten a bit "thuggish" recently. They used to have the popular and interesting bands on weekends, but in the last few years it's mostly the same type of mediocre cover band every night. 2 things I don't like about Jake's: one is that on weekends they constantly shift people around the the room like cattle. Sometimes at 10 PM the room is all clear for the live music. but sometimes, it's crammed with tables of people and the pool tables on the dance floor. The staff starts dragging out the furniture and pushing through the crowd and it seems like everywhere you go, you are in the way. My second complaint is how long it takes to get a drink. People park themselves on the bar stools and you have to lean over them to get served or wait for someone to leave. Depending how crowded it is, you can wait a long time for a beer. The bartenders are okay, but sometimes they can be rude or just ignore you. All in all, this place is okay. You just have to choose the best days to go. read more

Jakes. I get that you're trying very hard to be 90's (the cover bands and logo allude to this), but sometimes you just need to get with 2015. Have you ever heard of Square? Get a damn credit card machine at the door if you're going to charge a cover. Every bar in America has one because news flash, no one carries cash anymore (at least get an ATM???) and it doesn't make sense that you can pay with a card at the bar but not at the door. We'll gladly go elsewhere to pay $8 for a vodka club because of this inconvenience. :) read more

Decided to go pick up some Chinese Take-out last night from Golden River and remembered reading reviews about this cool place named Just Jake's that is just around the corner. I decided to stop by and grab a quick beer and see what the place was like and scout it out as a future gathering spot. I walk in and go directly to the bar. Definitely looks like a place I would enjoy. Bartenders appear busy talking, so while waiting I take out my cellphone and place a quick phone order with Golden River. Eight minutes later, I get a call back from Golden River that my order is ready and I still haven't had a Just Jake's employee acknowledge I am there. Keep in mind, there were four Just Jake's employees that appeared to be a mix of waitresses and bartenders and only eight patrons besides me in the bar. Three of the staff were actively engaged in a discussion with each other never turning their heads. The fourth was at the other end of the bar talking to two patrons and at least her head swiveled between the two of them. The patrons all appeared to be content even though none were helped while I was there so it isn't like they were busy and overlooked me. Since 3 of the employees were behind the bar, I have to believe at least one of them was authorized to pour a drink or at least on behalf of Just Jake's welcome me and apologize for whatever delay was preventing them from doing so. I'm 6'2" so it wasn't able to sneak in unnoticed and several patrons turned to look as I entered. I was at the center of a bar that had nobody else standing at it so I wasn't lost in a crowd or waiting in line. In fact I was the only one that moved from their spot during the time I was there. So is eight minutes a long time to wait to get served? Absolutely not -- I would have been perfectly fine with it knowing they were actively help other patrons or at least indicating they saw I was there and would be right there to serve. It seemed absurd that Golden River could take my order, prepare and package a complete takeout dinner, and call me regarding its readiness, while at the same time I couldn't get one of the four employees (barely out numbered by the patrons) to indicate they saw me much less fill a glass with liquid. If you are looking to save money on a night out, it appears Just Jake's is a good choice. read more

When I was a few years younger I came here a few times on Thursday nights for the bar/club scene with the man. I wasn't really into it but it was always packed. Loud music, cheap drinks, and a college near by pretty much guarantees business. Now I go for a casual dinner and drink (or lots of drinks). I live around the corner and it's probably my favorite bar in the neighborhood (The Office is actually not bad but a little too Chilis-ish, Tierneys is good for cheap drinks but not food, V Bar is just horrible). And last time I was there, I saw they have a prix fixe menu on Monday nights: soup, salad, entree, and dessert for like $15.99, you can't beat that even if the food sucked. We usually have the same waitress whenever we go and she's nice, pretty attentive and gives free rounds sometimes. They have enough tvs around the bar, but they're all old and small. It'd be nice if they invested in bigger tvs so I could actually watch the game without squinting. All in all it's a good bar, I'm there once every couple weeks. read more

I been going to bars all over for the last 10 years (30 now) and I never been kicked out of a bar. My friend lives 5 mins away so I been here 7-8 times. No lie I been kicked out for no reason 5 times. I am starting to think one of bouncers doesn't like me and this is the reason(my friend told me that the first time we went there I was talking to a chick that a bouncer seem fond off) I really was amazed when the bouncer came up to me and told me I had to go, lol. It usually after a couple hours after I at least spend 100+. I really never been kicked out of any venue and I have about a 80% rate at this place. Told my friend who lives near that we will only go to Egans when I come and visit (place down the street which I never been kicked out) It's ashame because other then the bouncers power trip, it's a nice place read more

Saturday night I went into Just Jake's and paid a $7 cover to get in because they had live music and the place was pretty busy. I stood at the bar waiting to order drinks for me and my girlfriend. The bartender working that end of the bar tended to several people whom I noticed were there before me so I patiently waited my turn. After about 10 minutes, I noticed she was then serving either her regulars or friends and chatting them up for a while. She made eye contact with me several times but never once came over to get my drink order. However if another person came to the bar, she walked over with a smile and took care of them. This happened at least 6 times before I got fed up and asked to speak to a manager. I spoke to him and his explanation to me was what could he possibly do about it? He said he can't control the girls or make them do their job ...which I find odd because isn't it his job as the manager to make them do their job? He offered to make my drinks after that statement and I told him that it's too far gone now. I don't want to spend my money in a place where I feel disrespected, forgotten, and unwelcome. I also don't want to be appeased by him offering me a free drink. I want to give my money to an establishment that respects me. One that knows my money is just as green as the next persons. I don't know if I was ignored because I'm a person of color or because they're just bad at their job. Either way it was unacceptable and I will not ever set foot in there again. read more

I now somehow end up here once a week to unwind after work and have a few drinks. Went here last night (Friday night) and it was MOBBED. The cover band was cool but the place was trashed. Clogged toilet in the bathroom and toilet paper everywhere. My vodka soda was served with travellers club vodka (ew) and the place reeked of vomit. I would give this bar another chance maybe on a night that isn't so clubby. read more

6 of us (and two dogs) had lunch out on the patio on 7/21 and, eventhough it was scorching hot, we all enjoyed a very delightful lunch in this private shady courtyard.. The pizzas were great, as was the generous size hummus appetizer (the wings were a bit dry, but tasty), and the salads were large and good. Our server was very professional, friendly and attentive, and the bill was reasonable for 6. We are former Montclair residents, now liiving in PA, but will definitely return to Just Jake's the next time we're in town. read more

went there using a voucher deal..$20 for $40 worth of food....atmosphere is a typical bar kind of feel. they dohave a kid's menu..which is good for families.... had the the steaka dn well very well pleased..everything was tender and had just the right amount of seasoning on it. tookn my grandmother with us and as all older southern people, she usually complains about food not being seasoned properly, or cooked right, but even she couldn't find a reason to complain about this place....TRULY AMAZING!!!!!!, lol...... they host a paint night on mondays from 7pm-9pm, so gonna have to go back and try that one Monday...... definitely will be back for dinner and drinks....staff is super nice as well read more
