I came to Juliet tonight and started by ordering the focaccia bread appetizer. The bread arrived at the table freezing cold and rock hard as if it was being kept in a refrigerator. Next I ordered the hake meuniere as an entree and it was completely under seasoned and quite frankly tasted like nothing. The other person I was dining with ordered the risotto and it was a big goopy sticky mess. I am so disappointed because I was really looking forward to trying this trendy spot. read more

I came here as a part of a group of 6 people. The first sign that we should have left was- we were there when they told us to be and watched as 3 employees took over 15 minutes to clean and push together 3 small tables. Everyone was irritated. We were finally seated and the menu items look pretty delicious. Our drink order is taken and filled pretty quickly but then we sat around waiting for someone to take our food order for a bit. We were told that they were out of potatoes - which are included in just about every dish- and offered NO substitute. Um ok? So I'm paying 18$ for an omelette and lemony greens. Our food finally comes and I'm already upset at the look at of it. I have the smallest omelette I've ever seen laying on a bed of lemony greens. I take a bite of said greens and holy crap- when they say lemony they MEAN lemony. It was AGGRESSIVE! Like, canker sore inducing sourness. My omelet was mediocre and also- 5$ for toast with jam? Time to update review after 2 years. As foodies and empty nesters, we eat out A LOT. Juliet is not the best restaurant in the Boston area but it is our favorite. Why? It hits on all categories. The food is consistently excellent and creative. The ambiance is super cute and the open kitchen is fun. The occasional sin of over salting or over "vinegaring" a plate which we experienced in the first year is no longer an issue. The service is impeccable. They get to know and take care of their regulars, clearly taking notes on wine preferences, etc. The wine list and pairings are original and unique. We've discovered some new favorites here for sure. They do fish and soups especially well. The consommés are SO rich and flavorful. And EVERY piece of fish we've had here has been perfectly cooked. That's a mean feat! By now we have tried every production menu and no surprise that our top favorites are seafood based. Rankings are below. All are good but some are standout. . 1. Came here for brunch with a friend. I couldn't make a reservation because when I called, they told me that I could only make reservations for their fixed prix 7-course meal. Anticipating a wait, I got there at 11:50 to get a seat. They put me on the waitlist and told me it would be a half hour wait even though there were 3 empty tables in the restaurant. We ordered at the counter, and sat awkwardly on the waitlist seating, trying to balance our coffees until they finally seated us at one of the numerous empty tables. I got the regular breakfast sandwich, which comes with a egg on toast, with a small salad on the side. It was good, I suppose. It was well seasoned and the toast had good texture. But was it good enough to be worth $12? (or was it $15) Not really. Can't believe I paid that much for a pretty mediocre egg and one piece of toast. read more

Juliet provides the kind of atmosphere and feeling you would expect to receive from your own mother when returning home. The staff are so incredibly kind and passionate about their work. They provide a fantastic experience from being seated to getting the check. Not to mention the actual experiences they often provide from a murder mystery themed brunch to a large parmesan wheel cracking. The food is also top notch while the company has some of the most progressive policies I've seen. Juliet is truly an spot to check out. read more

Went for brunch with a friend and ordered the Petite Breakfast ($14) and the scrambled eggs ($13). Petite breakfast had 2 soft boiled eggs, a smear of butter and blueberry? Jam, a piece of toast and a water/tea. Scrambled eggs were creamy and had bacon, served over 2 pieces of toast - would make Gordon Ramsay proud. We didnt expect such small portions, but I guess it makes sense for their business model... For how much we paid it wasn't "worth it" because we were ravenously hungry after leaving the restaurant. Overall, I've never had better scrambled eggs in my life, but I don't think I'll come back for those prices. read more

"Our staffing model is different than most restaurants with everyone making a living wage and no one working for tips" is what he said. I really did feel like the model of Juliet was different and that everyone was working toward the common goal of making sure you had a great experience and not overly nice to work for tips (as I've done as a server haha). Can't wait to join them for dinner! __________________________________________ I found this charming place on our way home from the dog park. We were able to grab a table outside with our dog. I had never been and walked inside to the counter, the design of this place was really nice. The open kitchen is what impressed me the most. A chic, upscale restaurant without being too pompous. Someone helped me and kindly explained that it wasn't a full service, but if we ordered, it was brought to the table. I ended up getting tea and the Parisienne breakfast with toast, soft boiled eggs and butter/jam and my boyfriend got a latte and something else that we can't seem to remember what it was called. WOWWWW! This place is Jamazinggggg~ it's so good! Honestly, I was expecting a really big breakfast place, but when I walked in, the restaurant was smaller than expected. My first thought was "oh wow.....this is.....cute". Don't get me wrong, I still think it's cute, but now I think it's CAYOOOOT~ here is my review: 1) service = The workers are very generous and make you feel at home. They do not expect tipping, or it says so on the menu, but that statement made me want to tip them more. I usually ask dumb questions, but they were nice enough to answer them haha. 2) Interior design = it is very unique. The room is small, but I was so impressed by the cleanliness of the tables and dining space. I think it's really unique to have the kitchen space visible to customers. I love watching people cook and it just goes well with the whole design. They really got taste in art. There are paintings surrounding the dining room, which I thought was clover. 3) Food = WOW! This was the WOW factor for me. The menu is small and seems plain, but when the food comes out.......oh my. You get a taste of beauty. This place knows how to make simple food look and taste divine. This is probably my favorite brunch place in Somerville! Ordered omelette with cheese and mushroom, breakfast tacos, and asparagus and ham eggs Benedict. Omelette was exceptional! I've watched Somerville's steady gentrification over the last 20 years, so a fancy toast restaurant seemed like the natural next step. Although it took me a year, I'm glad I finally managed to get over my skepticism and stop by, because Juliet is a neighborhood gem! This review is for the prix fixe dinner ($69 for 3 courses, $90 for 5 courses). The menu makes use of plenty of fresh, seasonal vegetables and flavors. The offerings change every couple of weeks--check their website for more info! The April/early May menu featured roasted lamb, but Chef Josh was kind enough to make a vegetarian version for me, substituting roasted cauliflower. I really didn't feel like I was missing out--the cauliflower was covered in a rich beurre blanc sauce with tons of fresh herbs and lemon! I'm not very strict about animal products like caviar, fish sauce, and lard, but they were super careful about finding substitutions for all of these ingredients. You can add wine pairings, but I opted for the nonalcoholic turmeric tonic instead. Whether or not turmeric has any health benefits, I enjoyed the light flavor and beautiful golden color of my beverage! The only criticism I have is that I think they could potentially benefit from a separate pastry chef. Dessert was my least favorite course; the texture of the pound cake was off. I love that they include tip in the prices, and I hope this practice catches on at other Somerville restaurants. Besides the fact that it's better for the waitstaff, it's more convenient not to have to waste time calculating the tip at the end of your meal! So even though the menu is a bit pricey, it's not as bad as it seems once you remember that tip is included. Juliet will join Bergamot and L'Espalier my list of great prix fixes in this area, and I can't wait to come back and try breakfast! read more

This cute little restaurant will warm your heart (and tummy) on a cold winter day. The ambience is crisp and modern - think all white walls, countertops, and tables, but large windows and colorful tabletop spreads make it friendly and bright as opposed to sterile. In the middle is a large open kitchen where you can see the chefs preparing delectable plates with surgical focus. I knew what I was getting long before setting foot in here, since I had seen a pic of the soft boiled eggs with toast sticks for dipping. Yolky eggs are my all time favorite food, so I was living the dream. The "Petite Breakfast" comes with thick, seasoned toast spears, two soft boiled eggs in-shell resting in the cutest little egg cups, butter and apple jam, OJ, and caviar or ham for extra. The toast is thick and delicious with a focaccia-like texture and goes perfectly with yolk as a condiment. It's just a tad too thickly cut for easy dipping. The eggs are ALMOST perfect, though one of the yolks was just a little too solid. Also, shout out to the apple butter for being unexpectedly amazing. Along with this dish, I had some of my friend's salmon toast - thick, tasty salmon on Greek yogurt with tamarind paste. Definitely a refreshing take on the classic lox bagel. We also had an apple muffin and a molasses cookie from the bakery while we waited to be seated, and both were superb. The apple muffin has real apple chunks in it! If you're coming without a reservation during peak brunch times, you may face a ~40min wait like we did. But in that case, just sit at the bar and have a nice coffee. I really like this place, but sadly haven't gotten my dining companion on board yet. The flavor and ambience is distinctly European--it certainly evokes bright cafes from my past. I love to sit near the window, watching the people go by and enjoying my toast. The meals are thoughtfully prepared and plated. They're hearty without being too much. The pastries and coffee are also super yummy if you're wanting a quick bite. The menu is ever-changing, so I can't recommend one particular thing--go with your gut! I really enjoyed the toast with grapefruit when I had it. The only thing I haven't liked was the potato salad, which had unexpected olives. I've only been in for breakfast, but I'm hoping to make it for dinner soon! It's a really great addition to the Union Square neighborhood. read more

Would I come here again? Yes! Location: far, we walked from Central square during the summer and it was very hot. We probably could have taken the bus. Ambiance: feeling sweaty, we happily entered the A/C restaurant and was greeted by a cute bed and breakfast feeling restaurant without the bed. The open kitchen concept gives a cozy feeling, but the white interiors and carefully decorated walls, keep the place feeling modern, rather than kitschy. Food: got the tacos- was the best! We also got eggs and the toast. Toast was pretty and tasty and the eggs were good for the price point, but not special. Would go to Cafe Luna for eggs because it's better and closer to public transportation. Come here for tacos! Service: honestly, brunch service in Cambridge is all-around great. Brunch was great! We've lived near Juliet for a while but hadn't stopped in until now and we were missing out! Overall the food and drinks were excellent and ambience was even better. It is a great place for a date or catching up with friends! Prices were a little higher but they are no tipping which meant it all evened out in the end. We usually end up spending between 30-40 on brunch where we get drinks and all told ours ended up just over 30 so even a little less expensive ultimately than other places in the area. Highly recommend! Food: We had the caramelized grapefruit, Parisian breakfast, and lamb hash. All were very good. The lamb was amazing - so good we'll be returning for dinner to see what else they can do! Drinks: Coffee and cappuccino were great, which should be standard for brunch places but oddly isn't. This place has literally everything you need for the soul: a cozy room, easygoing vibe, terrific wine service, and beautifully-executed seasonal Frenchish food. It's hard to reap more total satisfaction from any other restaurant in the Boston metro area. We did walk-ins for dinner on a Friday night. Were able to get seats after a bit of a wait without problem. Not only was the food on point, serving some New American dishes with French technique, I truly felt that I connected with everyone working at the restaurant. Brunch is always great at Juliet! The croissants are a fan favorite and are worth the wait. My favorite are the breakfast tacos - done right on corn tortillas and with the creamiest scrambled eggs. Pro tip: if you want some spicier hot sauce you can always ask for the secret stash of Frank's. They are also vegetarian friendly and it's great that the menu changes up from time to time and season to season. I also tried some of their Spanish tortilla, which I thought was good but my dining partner thought was a little dry. They also have a good selection of coffee and tea but no espresso. Liked Juliet so much we came here two days in a row on a recent visit to Cambridge. On Saturday we tried brunch. We arrived within 15 minutes of open and waited about 20 minutes, but with delicious coffee and pastry available at the counter the time flew by. I went to Juliet on a Saturday morning on a whim. My friend and we're looking up brunch places and it caught both of our eyes. So we took the short walk to find this cute Parisian style cafe! There are a couple of cute outdoor tables available - these are on a first come basis and will not be service by a waiter. The inside really stuck to the theme. I was a big fan of the decor and open kitchen as the focal point of the restaurant. Once you walk in you have to check in at the front for a table. When I checked in with my friend we were told it would be a 15-20 minutes, which is normally fine with me but there was a two seater table available. I brushed it off assuming there was a reason why this table needed to remain open. Until, 15 minutes later has passed another table opened up and that original table was still open! But all is well, we are eventually seated at the table that was open the whole time. Food was delicious on bright note! Both my friend and I loved our meals! I had the chilaquiles and my friend had an omelette. Located in Union Square, Juliet is a small café and restaurant with modern, homey décor. I came for brunch on a Saturday and we were seated right away at a high table; the food here was freshly prepared and extremely creative--overall, a great stop for a light and delicious brunch! We started with the breakfast tacos, and while the potato, cheese, and scrambled egg filling was light and creamy, the corn tortilla it was served in was not freshly prepared and was a little stale. The Captain Leo's Breakfast consisted of toasted milk bread with cloumage (kind of like cottage cheese) and tomatoes, along with a small salad, side of potatoes, and a soft-boiled egg. The chilaquiles consisted of fried tortillas topped with egg, celery, and cheddar cheese--after breaking up the tortillas, you ended up with crispy pieces of goodness covered in a decadent egg yolk "sauce"! The eggplant toast came with eggplant puree (kind of like a smooth baba ghanoush), sumac, and dried fruit soaked in red wine. But definitely the best dish we had was the salmon toast, which came with thick slices of smoked salmon and a light, whipped Greek yogurt that was just ever so slightly tart and very creamy, along with a dollop of a sweet and tangy tamarind paste--the dish was a fascinating combination of crispy, creamy, tart, sweet, and salty! Overall a great place for brunch, though the portions and food are quite light, and the prices are indeed steep. However, this is quality, house-made food that you're getting, and all the menu prices include tips, as the restaurant pays its workers a living wage. read more

But I had yet been to one of their dinners. However, I finally got the chance to attend one of their dinners for my birthday. My partner took me here on Saturday evening for my birthday. They're currently having a theme of "Cuisines across America" starting with the Bay area/San Francisco. Hidden gem for brunch in Somerville. I had not heard of this place before and had not really even passed it but am really I glad I stopped in. The food and ambience here is pretty cool. The place advertises itself as a euro style cafe (small, intimate with open concept). The chefs cook right in front of you and there's just a genuine quality to the food and service. Ordered the eggs (w/ salmon fraiche) and the French toast (apricot compote with some other magic). Both were delicious. Soo I took a friend here for breakfast and it was interesting.. It's not an average breakfast joint. You order and then you sit down and they bring the god to you. The ordering process was a little confusing. It was our first time there and we didn't know the difference in sitting at the counter as opposed to getting a table. I think it'd be a god idea if they ask is a customer has been there before to explain their processes. For two OJ's and eggs it was $30 which felt pricy, but the gratuity is included in their business model so I guess it kinda evens out? Eh. So the OJ was $4 and it was fresh and tasty, but a lot for the portion size. It was served in plastic disposable cups which I am personally NOT a fan of. It is a small space so maybe they don't have enough capacity for washing plates and cups. I just really like environmental considerations to be taken when I visit small businesses. I know it can get costly, but what's the true cost.. also the plates were not disposable, but plastic.. I know I'm weird. When I was looking at Yelp reviews to find a new place in one of the pictures for their reviews it looked like a metal plate and that was truly one of the reasons I made the decision to try it out, my friend laughed at my realization that it was just a silver plastic plate. The eggs were really tasty and it came with some greens that were really bitter & toast that was home made and it definitely tasted more like a cake consistency. Have heard some fantastic things about Juliet and was so excited when they came out with a Gilt City offer that I jumped on it right away. This place looks more like a cafe than restaurant, so it felt slightly strange having a multi course dinner here, but it's cute. The sit down table section for dinner is pre-fixe only, 3 courses for $55 or 5 courses for $78. Our voucher came with the 5 course option. It was really sad to have a sober dinner since they didn't have their liquor license yet when we went. I had a fruity cooler type beverage that was a little too sour/bitter for me, but their ginger beer is absolutely delicious. Fruits de mer - They deconstructed version of a "raw bar", lot of single bites of shrimp, mussel, octopus, fish etc. I'm sure it took a while to make which every bite is different. While each bite was good, I felt this was a bit disorganized overall. There was some lentil cake thing for 2nd course. Don't remember much and didn't care for it too much. Mushroom and truffle crepes - Bring on the fungi! The crepe was soft and fluffy with a nice brown butter sauce inside. Whole roasted branzino - This is the star of the show. I love whole fish and this was superbly cooked. The outside is crisp and salty. The inside was incredibly tender, almost reminds me of Asian steamed fish. Fantastic! I forgot what dessert was... Soo stuffed at this point. I'm seriously torn between a 3 or 4 star, cons being no alcohol and the first 2 courses. The main thing that strikes me about Juliet is how everything there is just intensely beautiful. One of their stand-out features is the prix fixe meals at the counter all day. Their petite breakfast ($12) is soft boiled eggs, coffee (or tea), juice, and toast; it's simple, but picturesque and delicious. The (currently Japanese-style) grand breakfast is a bit more unusual, also excellent. For commuters on the go, there are quick options like toast topped with avocado, grapefruit, and fennel salad ($6), small breakfasts like a beautiful plate of lightly-scrambled eggs ($9), and a variety of pastries and the like (also, breakfast tacos!) to grab and go. Lunch features a rotating prix fixe option at the counter, with a variety of cafe items up front. Elaborate salads and sandwiches go for $8-9 (though there's a very dressed-up lobster roll for $18), and there's also charcuterie and little snacks. I've been impressed by everything I've tried. It is a little pricier than at Sherman Cafe (the former (not-quite-as-)upscale cafe resident of the space). But only a little, when you note that prices at Juliet include tax and service. Still, it will be interesting to see how they balance their attention to luxurious detail with staying economical enough to be an everyday temptation for neighborhood commuters. I think it's lovely, and I'm really looking forward to the addition of full dinner service soon. The first time I walked into Juliet, I was welcomed so warmly that I felt like a returning regular. I'd heard from friends that the food was good, and was intrigued by what I'd read about Juliet's approach, but if I'm honest, it's the bright, expert, and welcoming service that sold me completely. What followed was a memorably delicious meal, outstanding wine, and plenty of learning from our server about everything we were consuming - without ever feeling like we were being lectured or sold to. This place has quickly become my favourite place to eat in Greater Boston, and the place I take every out-of-town visitor for something special, memorable, and entirely out of the ordinary. Cute place, but I was seriously underwhelmed by the food. The nice atmosphere and great reviews drew me here, but I left pretty disappointed. First, I was slightly annoyed that the Prix Fixe brunch menu was only available at the counter and not the other tables. I get it, kitchen is small, but none of the other options really grabbed me. We went with their special toast with a poached egg and the Spanish tortilla. The food was very nicely plated, but just didn't deliver on the execution. The egg was poached perfectly but it was served way too cold. The toast was also completely cold and undertoasted. The Spanish tortilla was in my opinion under seasoned and overcooked. The ones I've made at home are much better. The greens on the side were undressed and partially wilted. These two dishes plus two OJs set me back $25 and I was both unimpressed and still hungry. Instead of ordering more food here, we decided to go for a supplementary brunch elsewhere. I am hesitant, but willing to give Juliet another chance for brunch if I can get a seat at the counter. We had the pleasure of dining at Juliet at the culmination of our annual girls trip last weekend. We booked the multiple course menu with supplements and wine pairings. We were greeted by the owner Katrina who happily explained the dinner menu and sequence of menu items. We were happy to talk and asked many questions about the business and the menu. We learned how passionate Katrina and Josh are about social injustice in the restaurant industry and how Juliet is a restaurant that aims to change the dynamic by treating their staff with fair, high wages and offers profit-sharing as a corporate model. Having said that, no tip is expected AT ALL! And honestly, the prices do not feel marked up to cover. Juliet is all delicious food and excellent, personable service! Now to the food and wine...everything was delicious! We enjoyed all of the items served and learned the menu rotates about every 6-8 weeks with seasonality. Also, the wines were delicious. We tried 3 with our meal and they were not tastings, but full glasses each time. I loved everything about Juliet- from the perspectives of Katrina and Josh, to every menu item served. I will def return when I am in the Boston area and I've already told a good friend who lives in the area to make it a priority for her next reservation. read more

I so VERY MUCH wanted to give this place a higher rating. :-(. Everything we typically look for in a restaurant. A unique space ... farm to table...innovative cooking. It just didn't come together. Sadly. I would love them to succeed (especially with a livable wage and profit sharing concept). There is just much they could learn/incorporate. UPDATE 10/27/18 Shortly after I left my review I was contacted by Josh at Juliet. He had read my review and asked for more detail so he could share with the team to ensure a better experience for his guests. His response was warm and genuine and EXACTLY what I would have hoped for. He not only apologized but refunded a portion of our bill (which was unexpected and very gracious) and encouraged us to come back to the restaurant again at a discount (which is offered to all first time diners, but usually with an expiration date) at any time.
