The café/bistro right just outside my door. The interior is warm and elegant with its natural wood textures, while the exterior boasts a vibrant, rustic charm reminiscent of southern France. There's also a terrace dining area by the roadside--perfect for a sunny day. Vanilla E'clair: The glaze was slightly too sweet, and the vanilla flavor wasn't prominent. The puffs were soaked in vanilla custard, resulting in a less crisp outer shell and no molten filling. I think it was somewhat of a failure. Latte: Also quite ordinary. We love Batifol and have been meaning to try this place out for a while. Came for dinner on Monday to do the unlimited French tapas. We were looking forward to it and we were not disappointed! There's plenty of variety of dishes and portions are just right to order lots of different things. We loved the sliders, the mushroom croquettes, mussels, and calamari. The weather was beautiful so we sat outside and it was perfect. Our server, Rebecca, was really attentive and food came out quickly. For the price, the experience is well worth it! We ended the dinner with a crème brûlée which was good, I would have preferred a harder, thicker sugar topping as it was missing the "crack" when we broke into it. We left very full and happy. I just went back to Café Saint Germain to have lunch with a friend. We ate outside on a warm'ish spring day. I had the spinach quiche, which may be the best quiche I've ever had in my life. I frequently make fritatas and spanish tortillas, and I have no idea why this was so good, but it was AWESOME. I'm glad I gave Café Saint Germain another chance; the service and food were perfect. read more

The rest of the review--at over $6 for a cortado, plus tip, I was almost at $7 for one of the simplest espresso drinks. Absolute insanity, considering their specialty is not so much coffee, but rather food and pastries. They also didn't have any GF options in their pastry case. If I'm dying for a coffee, I'd stop here, but otherwise would rather visit one of the several other specialty roasters in the area! read more

This cozy French style spot was perfect for a girls dinner! Their unlimited French tapas deal was worth it at $42/pp. We tried sooo many tapas and ordered seconds of our faves. Casual French dining- bistro/cafe. Good selection of pastries - the almond croissant was decent, as was the cappucino, but nothing too earth-shattering. I got the Salad Nicoise - was pleasantly surprised that it came with sushi-grade seared tuna. The dressing was just okay though, I wanted to like it more. We sat outside on the sidewalk, service was a little spotty (server brought our food out but forgot utensils so after waiting a few minutes I ended up going to the counter to ask for them). But this is a really cute cafe, and I'd love to come back and try their other offerings. read more

I have tried this place three times now, once for an early lunch, once for breakfast, once for coffee and a pastry. Every time I have been there it has been practically empty. The staff is nice enough but relatively clueless. The food is not good. I ordered a breakfast sandwich, egg/cheese/tomato on a baguette for $10 and it was terrible. I threw most of it out. It was greasy, unseasoned, flavorless, and plain. The tomatoes were thin slices with the core still attached, and there was barely any cheese. The bread was soaked in griddle grease. There was zero thought or care put into this. The coffee is fine but overpriced. Lunch food was expensive and not very good plus it took a very long to get in a pretty empty restaurant. Maybe this place transforms for dinner, but earlier in the day, this place is awful. read more

I visited Cafe St. Germaine in Somerville on Beacon Street and discovered it to be a wonderful addition to my neighborhood. They offer $1.00 Oysters from 4-6 p.m., and I hope this deal lasts a long time because they were very fresh. For my meal, I tried the delicious SOUPE A L'ONION GRATINÉE priced at $14, followed by the BŒUF BOURGUIGNON priced at $36, which consisted of Red Wine Braised Boneless Beef Short Ribs, Mashed Potatoes, Carrots & Pearl Onions. While the dish was nicely presented and tasty, I would recommend making the short ribs more tender and flavorful with extra sauce. On Mondays and Tuesdays, they offer all you can eat Tapas with a wide selection for $38.00. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit. Lastly, I would suggest adding bar seats with backs for added comfort. read more

Went for the tapas with friends. At the start of the meal asked if there was an allergen menu or if they could let us know what was gluten free (2/4 of us had a gluten allergy), the waitress looked at us confused and said the whole menu was good for allergies. Multiple items listed bread as a part of the dish, so we figured she just didn't understand the question. We flagged down another staff member and asked the same question, explaining that our waitress didn't understand us, and he said he would get someone to let us know what on the menu was/could be made gluten free. Nobody ever came to do so. Service overall was subpar, our water cups were almost constantly empty (tiny glasses) and they rarely came for refills. Food also took fairly long to come out after ordering (we sat at our table for over two hours and most of it was with no food or water). Other tables got table bread, but none ever came to our table. No one ever came to ask how the food was, and even when plates were stacked, it took a while for the table to be cleared. The food overall was average. Some dishes were good but majority were mediocre to bad. Some items we ordered multiple of and they came out different each time. For example, we got the beef sirloin (entrecôte à la plancha) and the first order was a lean cut and well done. The second order (placed 20 minutes later) came out significantly larger, on a different plate, very rare, and a fatty cut. We had to spit out most of it due to the fat making the meat so chewy. This inconsistency appeared across other dishes as well, and most items did not match the description on the menu. Most items came with a side of the same plain fries, which seemed like a ploy to fill us up. Most dishes were carb heavy and we were searching for some protein/vegetables. We tried pretty much the whole menu and most got multiples of, and left still pretty hungry. The only highlight were the drinks. We got the saint Germain spritz, which came out promptly and was delicious, if a little pricey. Circling back to the allergies, I tried my best to gauge what was gluten free and what wasn't and didn't eat anything that had bread or croutons, but definitely feel sick at the end of the meal. read more

The PRB Boulangerie remodeled and has opened as a lovely French bistro / cafe. The interior is attractive, with a bistro feel. And the menu features a lot of classic French dishes. We had the saumon fumee appetizer, and coq au vin and black truffle rigatoni as entrees. Everything tasted great--the chicken was flavorful, the rigatoni sauce was rich and had nice umami, without being too much. And we finished out the meal with their crème brulee. Super cute decor and ambiance! The espresso martinis are good and they have unique flavors - chai, salted caramel, etc. They were able to make these decaf. I was super excited to try the truffle pasta but the online menu hadn't been updated so I went with the pesto pasta (only vegetarian option). The burratini in it was a nice touch to elevate the dish. The restaurant is still working out its kinks with service. I'd come back for the espresso martini deal, but not sure about sit down dinner again. read more

Very nice atmosphere. Very nice server. It took a long time to get served because there were so many customers. My omelette was very big and delicious. I asked for french fries instead of roasted potatos and was disappointed that they only gave me a handful. If we were in France, half the plate would have been french fries. We had a very fresh and delicious pastry for dessert. The prices of everything were very reasonable. All in all, it was good and I'd go back again. read more

Lovely dinner tonight at Cafe Saint-Germaine - Hendricks gin martini with big, meaty escargot served over a slice of mushroom with a pastry cap, black sea bass with a tarragon beurre blanc, pea and mint puree, peas, roasted carrots, asparagus and fingerling potatoes. Brought a bunch of pastries home as well. AND they mistakenly tossed the remains of my husband's steak frites when he'd asked to take it home so they made up an entire new plate for him to take! Ambiance nice. Waitron was very pleasant but clueless. What is soup today? let me ask. Do you have herbal tea? let me ask. Lovely bread, what kind is it? Let me ask. etc I blame this on the owners/ managers as much as the wait staff. Clearly very 'lite' on training. The waitron was inattentive, left us for LONG stretches with not checking in, we had to wave down several people to get our bill at the end and then had a long wait while someone figured out how to work the credit card machine. Food was mediocre. Mashed potatoes side dish creamy and tempting but lukewarm temperature at best. Burrata with vegetables, vegetables that formed the nest for the burrata were cold. Nothing quite as dispiriting as cold "roasted brussel sprouts". Why?! The veggies should be HOT and fresh not limp and cold. Maybe they do better with pastries and coffee in the morning. But they have a long way to go to improve food and service for dinner. I won't be going back. read more
