My girlfriend and I went tonight. She lived in mainland China for over three years and I grew up in Philly and New York and grew up eating in both cities China towns. Finding good Chinese food in Dallas can be a challenge. J.S. Chen's Dimsum and BBQ is either the best or one of best places. The food here is world class. Words cannot describe the crab fried rice. If you have not had the crab fried rice you need to put it on your bucket list. If I'm in a situation where I have a last meal this will be on the menu. We wanted to sample the restaurant so we ordered way more food and took two huge bags of leftovers home. In addition to the crab fried rice we would recommend the pot stickers, shrimp dumplings, braised eggplant and tofu, cha siu bao, Peking duck and for dessert the sesame balls. The service was amazing. Everything came out hot and fresh. The chef/owner and his partner/hostess were friendly and delightful. The staff were helpful and attentive. I took my mom here just to try out a new Cantonese style Chinese restaurant, and we were amazed by how good the food was. The decor is a bit modernized, and it lacks the certain ghetto Cantonese quality usually found in Chinese restaurants. The interior has an American feel, though the BBQ window still has meats hanging around like usual. We ordered the braised eggplant, which was not at all oily, as it is usually soaked in oil to get it tender. We also had the bamboo and tofu, which was also perfectly cooked. The fried turnip cakes, which are usually offered only during dim sum, were specially made to order, and were so light and tender. Pork fried green beans were another definite plus, and the Chinese broccoli was perfect. All dishes were really great here, and I will need to drive out this far again to further review. read more

Chen is a no frills, plastic soup spoon, Styrofoam cup, divey, warm ray of dim sumshine in a land full of embarrassingly terrible Chinese restaurants. A couple of regulars were sitting at the table next to ours and members of the staff from the cashier to a couple of the kitchen guys alternately sat next to them drinking tea and chatting in Chinese. My kids and I shared the dim sum lunch special and the sesame chicken. I had legit, hot, loose leaf tea in a cheap steel teapot and plastic tea cup. The barbeque pork buns were fluffy and soft and light and sweet and the filling was savory and tender. The shrimp dumplings were delicate and pure white, the peachy pink color of the shrimp filling peeking through the translucent skin, filling my mouth with a seemingly concentrated essence off sweet, briney shrimpness. Dont support thieves!!. I just recently had Christmas dinner with my family and we ordered a set price dinner on their menu. The WORST SERVICE EVER!!! The waitress brought over a crab dinner plate to our table. As we began eating, the boss's wife realized that it was the wrong dish out and took it back. She admitted that it was her mistake and brought us out the correct dish. Typically, at any decent and reputable restaurant, if the restaurant makes a mistake--dish would be comped or not charged. HOWEVER, this was not the case! The boss's wife took the dish back and and ALSO CHARGED US!!!! PLUS, THE RECEIPT DID NOT LIST ANY OF OUR DISHES---JUST THE TOTAL PRICE OF DINNER AND 15% GRATUITY AND THE EXTRA DISH THAT WE DID NOT ORDER !!!!!Along with the overcharged bill, the waitress spilled water all over my family member's pants. We been here several times. They have great dim sum. A lot of variety and comparable to Kirian Court. Couple of weeks ago, we went for dinner as my wife was craving some dim sum and congee. Now as a Chinese American, I know that dim sum and congee is usually brunch/lunch food, but we went ahead to order anyway. 2 spoons into my congee, it's like what you see in kitchens nightmare - a small roach was in my congee. My husband and I were looking forward to the dim sum carts, but were left disappointed. None of the plates were hot except those in metal steaming containers, even dishes we thought should be, nothing was particularly flavorful, and the shrimp in the shumai hadn't been deveined. I'm just going to go ahead and give it five stars because we read reviews before going and expected the worst service known to man!! However we wanted dimsum and not even shitty service was going to hinder that. We were pleasantly surprised service was fantastic. The food was very tasty, we just had dim sum and hot and sour soup. Both were delicious. My favorite was the dim sum Shanghai style and the shrimp and pork dumplings. We also had the fried shrimp balls, they were good but just not my favorite (I wasn't a fan of the texture). I would suggest going earlier in the evening because they get packed at around 8pm. We noticed some slower service around that time but no worse than any other restaurant. We will be back, for sure! read more

JS Chen's was not too busy at 11:30 on Sunday, and I am not sure if they increased the frequency of the carts once it got more crowded. I have done better at Kirin Court in terms of choices for me. We waited around a while before the carts started showing up. Overall though I thought it was fine, but not outstanding. I might have done better ordering from the menu, but no one really offered us that option and I did not ask. There were a couple servers who mentioned a tofu stuffed with vegetables but it did not come by. It seemed a bit less intimidating than Maxim's for a non-Chinese person as everyone spoke English. The best dim sum we've had in DFW so far (out of 2 places). The dungeness crab fried rice is as good as advertised. Big serving, lots of crab, very tasty. We also ordered the congee (good, not watered down or bland), shu mai (also good), fried taro (crispy and not soggy like some places), shrimp fun roll (good)...the only thing I was a lil irked by was their spare ribs. While they were good, they threw in a couple pieces of taro. I'd never seen that before and felt like it was just used as a space filler. Restaurant was clean, even the bathrooms were pretty clean. Bad experience!!! Horrible customer service, even for a Chinese restaurant. And I know this because I am part-Chinese. Foods takes over 35 minutes to come out. The sad part is that there was nobody eating there besides us and another table. Dim sum has a distinct freezer smell and dishes had tiny food particles on them from previous usage. Nobody refilled our water and waitress complained about her tip, calling the other customer "Cheap!" just seconds after they left. I went here on Thanksgiving day with the family. It's a smaller restaurant when compared to other dim sum places. We didn't have to wait for a table though. I love Dim Sum and was very excited to try this place. I thought that they had a pretty good variety, but I have seen better. Of course the stand outs for me were the baked and steamed BBQ pork buns, as well as the sticky rice in the lotus leaf. Everything was delicious and tasty. I first came here years ago and tried their Peking Duck and some other dishes. Their Peking Duck and the sauce it comes with is sooo good! The tofu and vegetable dish we ordered was average. The sauce was good, though. We also ordered another tender beef dish/stew thing with rice... the meat was very tender and it's so good when it's all soaked up in the stew/sauce or if you pour it over your rice. I've also been here a few times for lunch/dim sum with my boyfriend and his family (they love this place). A lot of times, there is a wait during lunch. Their dim sum is average, not the best.
