Our experience with Joyce was good from start to finish. Bill Adams came to our home and estimated what was involved. We knew we'd be storing things for a while, and that not everything would be ready to be stored at the same time. (Downside: a minimum charge per trip to cover truck and men.) June, in the office, was always very helpful. The same driver handled all three pickups spread over several months, and did a solid job wrapping our furniture. Everything was placed in storage vaults, which went into climate controlled storage. (Monthly billing was per vault.) When the time came for our things to be delivered, 200+ miles away, Doug kept us posted on scheduling, and walked us through our questions on the paperwork. Our preferred driver was not available, but the weekend team we got was just first class -- 3 Joyce employees who came with the truck, two people hired locally. They worked together and hustled to get everything off the truck and into the house ahead of coming rain. They were there another few hours assembling things, rearranging furniture and arranging in our basement the boxes we weren't ready to unpack. They were good at what they do, but also listened to what I knew of how one big complicated old dining room table needed to be reassembled. They covered our new light-colored carpeting. The estimate turned out to be higher than the actual weight, and our credit card was charged the day they loaded from storage, for the actual weight of our goods. My family and I used the services of Joyce Van Lines on several occasions during the past two years, moving first from Indiana to Connecticut and then, in the following year, from Connecticut to New York City. The moves were done on time, in a very professional manner, by courteous, helpful and careful employees of Joyce. I believe that a true mark of a fine and responsive moving company may not necessarily be: "Did all items [in our case and in all our moves, there were over 1,000 line items on the inventory sheet] arrive in exactly the condition they were packed and transported?" We did sustain relatively minor damage on several items....but I believe a true mark of a fine company like Joyce is their responsiveness to clients, when they have to fix something. Do not trust their employees or Joyce to do the right thing. We used Joyce to move and store our belongings for 3 months. When our belongings were delivered after being in storage, we discovered the box containing 3 Sonos stereo speakers was missing. That was the only box missing. This is a value of $600. Joyce will not take responsibility for their employees or admit anything beyond it was a "misplaced box" and are offering us $45 based on the weight of the speakers. This is clearly theft and it's very unsettling to know we trusted Joyce with our possessions and they are not holding their employees accountable for stealing from clients. read more

I moved almost 500 various boxes & articles of furniture from CT to CO. The items were stored by Joyce in their facilities for 3 months before they were delivered. Packing all the items and putting them into multiple vans in late December took 2 full days. I supervised items requiring crating, but I couldn't be everywhere in a 4,000 square foot house. As numbers came off the huge Van in CO, the movers yelled out a number, & my husband checked it off, while I ran around, up & down stairs, showing them where the rugs & furniture were to be placed. It wasn't until I had unpacked all the boxes that I could determine that several items never arrived. The new owner in CT emailed me that she had found one of 4 missing Le Creuset pot lids in her garage. The others, & a Le Creuset cannister are still missing. Joyce refused to pay for these, on the basis that all the numbered boxes had been checked off at the time of delivery. How do you know what they obviously had left behind - what was missing but unaccounted for - until you've unpacked everything? They charged me more than $25,000 for this move! The original estimate had been $8,000. And one of the crated mirrors arrived broken! They paid for the broken items (after a $500 deductible) but I will have to replace almost $1,000 in Le Creuset pots, because, what good is an enameled, cast iron Dutch oven or Braiser, without a lid? read more

Couldn't have asked for better. Moved from NYC to Minneapolis, and these guys did everything they said they were going to. They showed up at my Manhattan apartment on time, loaded everything, and took off. They delivered to my new Minneapolis apartment within the window given to me at the start of the move. Everything arrived in good shape. The move was a bit less expensive than the estimate, so they refunded my credit card - as they said they would. I have used Joyce Movers 4 times over the years, and had positive experiences each time. The acct rep over the phone was very professional and we were able to communicate with email as well! The guys that came to do the move show up on time, pleasant and friendly, work hard and efficiently. They are respectful of your stuff, careful moving things, put where you want, and even move something again when you change your mind. They come prepared with tools and equipment they need! If I could give zero stars I would. Absolutely the WORST company I've ever delt with. We had our driver show up late not knowing anything about the guys he hired to pack us. Then he disappeared whole first day leaving our packers with ZERO instruction or supervision. I found a box of food left outside on the front lawn and I had to bring it in and open it bc it just didnt seem right that there should of been food in the box. Oh but there was and it was packed with dryer sheets from the laundry room....this story could go on and on but I'll end it here. There was also more food from the cabinets packed in the truck that I specifically said NOT to pack! I was then told sorry it was too late. The 2nd day the driver fired the guys from the first day had God only knows who at my house and guess who wasn't there again....our driver. But dont worry one of the packers girlsfriends sat out in front of my house for hours in her mini van and came in to use my bathroom whenever she wanted. Needless to say I was super not happy. Day 3 yep a disaster as well my items just packed any which way and not wrapped labled or anything properly. Last time i checked you dont pack a printer on its side in a wardrobe box. the driver left the go to Indiana with our goods and we didn't know when we would get them back with the household delivery which wasn't the end of the world except he didn't show up again day 4 with an empty trailer until 6pm at night which was awful bc I had to take care of my son and had to leave 2 guys who I don't know at my house and they made themselves at home in my backyard. I told the driver I needed to talk to him when he arrived except he pulled up in front picked up the packers and pulled away before I could come out. When I called him he said Oh I'm sorry you wanted to talk? Ok now day 5 the last day before the delivery they were told not to be in my room as I would take care of certain things and then leave them boxes to tape once I was done packing them. Of course no new story they packed my room while I was doing something else. And while they were in my room the one guy took my anniversary present from my husband my BRAND new earrings. Things got thrown in the truck like I've never seen so disrespectful it made me sick. They took apart my son's sandbox and I said no please don't do that it will break. I was assured it would be ok except as they were taking it apart AFTER I said no I listened to it Crack and break and the guys just pretend like it didn't happen. They dropped my fridge and freezer while carrying it up the basement stairs as well. I could go on and on about the horror that happened during my pack but I'll save that for my next review of the delivery.....and then I'll do another review of the unpack. read more

The agent came to my house and gave me an estimate. The final charge to move was $800 over the estimate. This was more than a 30% difference. There were no complications with the move, no extra furniture was added, everything was labeled that was to be moved, and the weather was fine. I believe that they gave a low estimate to get my business and then raised the price on completion of the move. Don't use them or the same thing could happen to you. read more

Would not recommend this company. My move had to be broken up into 2 shipments. Both times they charged me twice for the van, saying they had a right to make money. Originally they were going to use a shuttle and then place the contents in a larger moving van. That didn't happen but they still chose to bill me twice - once for the shuttle and once for the moving van that they didn't use. I am missing boxes yet they say that isn't so. When the 2nd shipment came I told the mover boxes were missing. He took the form from me, checked off all the ones I never checked off as I didn't see them and said he delivered them. Then he told me I had to sign the form, that I had no choice as it was mandatory, but that I could still file a complaint if I felt like it. Although, he constantly said he was worried about any complaint I may have as it would come back to haunt him. I could care less about him being haunted. I filed a complaint with the company who chose to support the individual who marked up the sheet (as he was so worried that some boxes didn't arrive so he fixed the sheet to say the did arrive), and they said it was all my fault. The missing boxes were clearly marked with my address and name, and (perhaps not wisely) I had marked what the contents were, figuring unpacking would be easier for me. Sadly, the boxes were marked Lenox, Christmas, Crystal. Bad enough my Lenox that had been gifts and collected since I first got married, a Nativity my mother had made for me shortly before she passed away was also in one of those boxes. It's all gone. They refuse to pay me what I was asking for, which wasn't even what the items are actually worth. I figured into the amount some depreciation but they have not responded. I filed a complaint with the BBB but got no where. If you value your hard earned dollars, and your possessions I would look elsewhere for a mover. It is always stressful moving to another state but this company made it the worst experience of my life. Overcharged, not reimbursed for missing items (and I wasn't asking a lot), and other issues that happened that I won't go into at this time. All I can say is, once you sign the agreement to have them move you, their office in Oxford could care less about you as you are just the little guy. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. Trust me -- run from this company!! I used them on a move from CT to FL a few months ago. The guy John Adams who "sizes up" your house is just a salesman, out to sell something - and you can never get in touch with him again. He doesn't answer his phone or return your calls. The office person Janice is rude. The date was set to load the truck and they were paid 2 weeks prior. On the morning of the move I had to call and ask if they were definitely coming and what time as I had not heard back from anyone since paying them $10,000 the two weeks prior. The guys who came to load the truck were ok but one spent most of the day in all of my 3 bathrooms, used all the toilet paper and made a big mess. He was very unprofessional. And he was the boss. Another one of the guys kept asking if he could have things in my house that we're getting moved. Super unprofessional. I requested to be present for the weighing of the truck as is your option. They weighed the truck without notifying me. The response was oops, sorry. They didn't show up until 10:00 am to load a 2700 sq ft house of stuff into a truck and then ran out of time when it got dark at night and they couldn't see what they were doing. They explained they had to "float" the rest of my belongings in (which actually meant just throw it all in the truck unsecured - as I watched them do) and they would "reload it properly back at the warehouse". They gave a 5 day window of when it would be delivered in FL. They delivered it in the last day of the window which meant we had to stay in a hotel for all those days. They then stated they had to get a "shuttle" for an additional $1200 as the driver didn't think he could drive the truck through the streets of the gated community we moved to. So they rented a UHaul for probably $200 and charged me $1200. I have since seen numerous 53 ft (same size as ours) moving vans in my neighborhood (I even have pictures). Funny how those drivers could do it. Now let's talk about the damage. They damaged so many of my things. Furniture was scratched, scraped, and broken. Parts were missing from furniture they had disassembled and could not be reassembled properly. They reassembled 2 of the beds improperly and my children were almost injured. I just today unpacked another item, an expensive elliptical machine, to find they wrapped it in moving blankets with the plug still in it and broke the plug off in the machine so the machine can't be used now. They LOST a 9x12 oriental rug. Since we will be moving again soon we have chosen not to unpack everything so I am sure I will discover more damaged items. Handlebars on a bike were sliced. A knob was broken off a Thomasville 12 drawer dresser - I saw them smash it into a wall when moving it inside damaging the wall as well. They scratched the hardwood floors in the FL house. The FL guys blamed the CT guys for a lot of the damage and missing parts. I could go on and on. I picked the company because they started out as a local CT company but I honestly could NEVER recommend them in any way or for any circumstance. They were way more expensive than other movers and their work was beyond horrible!!! If you value your money and your property, choose another moving company!! read more

terrible experience. we gave them the key to our storage unit and gate pass code (moved from ct. to sc.) because we couldn't be there. we moved all the boxes and had another company move the furniture to our new home. we were horrified when we discovered that approximately 12 boxes were missing and so many items were either damaged or broken. the most heart wrenching issue was when my wife discovered that her collection of family pictures from her childhood to her adulthood were gone. we lived in the same community with the owner and thought they were nice people. think twice about using this company to move you. read more

I, like another reviewer, would give 0 stars if I could! Let's see, where do I begin? I moved within the same city in CT, about one mile away. John Adams was my sales person and he came out to look at everything that was to be moved. There were no boxes to be moved, just furniture, since we moved the boxes ourselves. As he said, it was a pretty easy and straightforward move. First of all, the estimate he gave us was totally off. He estimated that the move wouldn't take more than 5.5 hours and it took about twice that! The guys totally took their time packing things up. Not only that, there was supposed to be someone who came out to crate up my marble coffee table (which I paid extra for since John "recommended" this), but he never showed up. So the guys who were there had to wrap it up themselves. That's the only thing "extra" that they took that wasn't on the original list so not sure why it took an extra 4 hours! John had the nerve to tell me that it probably took longer because I had them take extra things. NOT TRUE! He totally underestimated the job. When they finally packed up the truck and brought our things to the new house, that's where the nightmare began. It had started to rain when we had left the old house so even though I had told John that we had brand new hardware floors and for them to be careful, that didn't happen. We also have a very expensive Italian made dining room set that had multiple pieces damaged. As they were carrying my dining room server off of the truck, one man slipped and fell, dropping my server! Needless to say, the server was damaged on one side (chipped and scratched). My hutch had multiple scratches on the inside where they took the glass shelf in and out. Also, there was a large scratch on one of the glass doors. The biggest damage was to the table base. As soon as they unwrapped it, I noticed that it was "discolored". I pointed it out right away and they had the audacity to say that it was like that before and that in no way their cloths caused that damage. Well, they were WRONG! I know my furniture and it wasn't like that before. I had to find my own furniture repair person who deals with lacquer and he immediately knew that the damage was caused from the move. He asked "was it raining the day of the move?" When I told him yes, he said that the cloth they had used to wrap up the base probably got wet and it was sitting in the truck for a while. A wet cloth against lacquer will cause a "cloudy" appearance. He quoted me over $1000 to fix it! When I had originally included this in my claim with Joyce, they denied it saying that they didn't cause the damage. When I contacted them back with a written explanation from the furniture repair person, they re-looked at my claim. Krista in the office totally agreed and said "Oh, I didn't know your furniture was lacquer". If they knew this occurs with lacquer furniture when it gets wet, don't you think they would take extra precautions not to damage the furniture?? They decided to give me $90 for the table base since I had selected the minimum coverage! I'm totally disgusted. Not only did I have to pay $1000 to fix the server that THEY dropped and damaged, I now have to pay another $1000 to fix my table base that THEY totally ruined as well. I'm not even fixing the scratches in the hutch for now because who knows how much that will cost. Some other furniture had chips and scratches that weren't there prior to. In addition, they couldn't get our bedroom armoire upstairs claiming that it wouldn't fit up the stairs. Well, my husband and a couple of his buddies were able to bring it upstairs the following week by taking the doors and shelves off. Don't you think a professional moving company should know to do this? In the long run, this is costing me three times more than what I expected. I should have gone with the local moving company instead. I would think twice before selecting Callahan Brothers. read more
