This was my first time visiting Brooklyn and I picked this Thai restaurant for a quick lunch. When I entered, I was quite impressed by its interior, elegant and tidy. I was seated in their cute backyard and enjoyed a lot of sunshine. I ordered Tom Kha (coconut soup with shrimp). It tasted good, not too sour like most Thai places do. Pad see ew is my favorite Thai dish and theirs was really good. It had a large portion and was very fresh and tasty. What's more, the bill came out only $10! This place was amazing!!! I came here with a friend and we decided to share since we were told the portions were huge. We had the mango salad to start which had a citrus sauce that was a mix between sweet and spicy. We then had the seafood curry coconut. It was a huge portion filled with everything you could imagine. I came here on a Wednesday evening and we almost walked away thinking they didn't have outdoor dining but they have a pretty big patio in the back. The service left much to be desired as we had to hail down the waiter every time but we later realized he was actually the (insert new PC term for bus boy?) and the waitress didn't appear until the very end of our meal. My date ordered the Thai fried rice with fried rice and realized there was no shrimp. We left the waitress know and by the time she finally brought the shrimp he was done with the rice so that was a bummer. I got the calamari and mussels pad Thai. The mussels were so over done and rubbery but the calamari and pad Thai itself were good. I also got a whiskey sour which was huge and tasty. I think if they had the waitress come from the beginning it would have been a much better experience so the 4 stars is a leap of faith. I'd return with hopes of better. read more

Definitely a lovely place to bring a date. It's very nice and cozy. The atmosphere is very intimate and uplifting. On top of the wonderful scenery the prices are spectacular. Every dish is under $11. That's a bargain especially in this part of Brooklyn. My Tom Yom soup was enormous and only $4.50. The portions are very large and the prices are so comforting. Very impressed with their backyard outdoor seating. Super relaxing and cozy with the pillows and umbrellas. Plus you don't get to constantly smell the kitchen inside. Not a huge fan of their Thai ice tea. Came in good portion but a little too "chemically" sugary for my taste. Their appetizers are really what stands out. The fresh thai summer rolls tasted sooo refreshing with the cucumber, shrimp in tamarind sauce. Great presentation as well. Loved the calamari dish!! Never had them come out so crispy without having being oily. You could basically grab one without needing to wipe your hands. The plum sauce it came with was the perfect. accoutrement. We ordered a small for 2 and we were starting to feel full by the end of it. For entrees, I ventured out of my comfort zone and ordered the Kang Panang Gaibeef which included sliced beef with peppers crushed kaffier leaves in panang sauce. My friend had the Kang Kyo Whan Gai with sliced chicken, eggplants, zuchini in the green curry sauce, Both sauces were more watery than what we were used to but still had taste. Found the Panang to be more flavorful than Green curry. In both dishes, the meats were overcooked and lacked flavor (my beef slices were slightly tough and her chicken slices were white and blend) . Some of the vegetables were kinda old as well (carrots and eggplant were slightly browning). Overall, the entrees we had weren't that great (to say the least), but then again they weren't indigestible. I will still eat my leftover for lunch tomorrow. I think they kinda win with the seasoning on their sauces..cause it made me forget about the other ingredients in the dish. Or it could be I'm just a sucker for thai sauces...Haha! I looooove their portion sizes and their price. You can honestly be full and satisfied from the apps, share an entree and still have enough to take home. For 2 apps, 2 entrees and 3 thai iced teas, our total came out to $38 Service was not great. Our server lack any opinion and seemed more preoccupied with us getting our orders in quick. I say get there early because they are always busy! The sad part is the locations are pretty but small. Joya is bigger than the other two!! The food, appetizers and Thai tea are really good! The Thai tea isn't too sweet and drinkable!! The food are freshly made and quick service!!! The food is tasty and light!!! The food isn't greasy which make it worth eating!!! I love this place. Ive been coming to joya for over seven years now since I went to school in downtown brooklyn. The must try is there spring rolls, those vegetable spring rolls are so amazing it comes with this dipping sauce thats the perfect split between sour and sweet. I mean I parked illegaly in front to run in and get some on the drive home from work?! There that awesome. The skewers and Thai rib appetizers are okay but definitley not worth it... munch on those spring rolls. When the fryer was broken one time out of the over 100 times ive orderd from there they acommodated me! There really amazing!! The lady that rolls the spring rolls has been there forever, and they dont use the frozen rice paper its the real deal. The Pad See Ew Is amazing just so authentic! My standard order is mix it up a bit! Add that extra brown sauce, american brocolli and a side of white rice and watch as the hungry monster in your belly smiles and dances! Its just so great! The thai tea is just so authentic and good. The workers and the cooks are really from thailand. After traveling in thailand for about a month in the villages and markets I can justifiably say that there food is authentic. Its so reasonable in regards to pricing. ROACH IN FOOD! Last night, I had dinner at Joya, and had a dinner special Scallops Pad Thai. I didn't finish the meal and brought it home for lunch. Today, I ran to the fridge to finish the meal which was sitting in the same bag that the restaurant packed it in. UPDATE: We were told when we called that the manager would call us back last night. No call.... so my husband decided to call back. We were told that the manager said he would not be calling us and if we don't like the food we can stop ordering from them. WELL WELL WELL! What kind of customer service is that Mr. Manager? Honestly, I was very disappointed by this experience. I read the great reviews of Joya and was excited to take my mom here for her birthday since she's never had Thai. The interior decoration was very hipster and lovely with Edison light bulbs and a cute outside seating spot. When we walked in, the restaurant was packed with people, but we were seated in about 15 minutes. We were given a specials menu that was hand written and a regular printed menu. The specials menu was, in some ways, difficult to read. And they have a mixture of special appetizers and main dishes all jumbled up in there with no differentiation. So I ended up ordering an appetizer that I thought was a main dish, and thought that it was a main salmon dish that costs $17, but was completely something different - an appetizer that was $7. When they put it on the table, our entire table was very confused and we tried to clarify what we had ordered, what we had expected, etc. Three staff members had come over and just kept arguing with me instead of clarifying it. During our entire meal, it was very difficult to get our waitress's attention. She had not come over once to see if everything was okay or if we had needed anything else. By the time we were done with our meal, it took several tries just to get her attention to pack our leftovers and for the check. She packed our leftovers, one of which was a liquid curry, in one of those paper take-out boxes rather than the plastic containers. Needless to say, we didn't want to impose anymore so we walked out hoping it wouldn't leak through. That was for sure not the case. By the time we got home, the liquid had leaked through completely, as well as through the plastic bag that was holding everything. After getting our check, we waiting for quite some time for her to come pick it up, but she never did and we eventually went up to someone else to run our payment. Note: she was not the only waitress for the entire restaurant. She had other tables, but definitely neglected mine. So, I definitely give the service here a 1 star. In terms of food quality, I was also very disappointed. We ordered the tofu appetizer, the tom yum soup, the salmon avocado mango roll, the mussels special, and the spicy noodles. The tofu appetizer was decent, the tom yum soup was salty, the salmon avocado mango roll I would not order again, the mussels seemed not fresh although the base was pretty good, and the only thing our table truly enjoyed was the spicy noodles. So I would give the food 3 stars. But our overall experience in the restaurant was 1 star, and I don't think I'd ever come back or recommend to others. read more

It's been some time since we've patronized Joya in Brooklyn. What a delight We enjoyed dirty gin martinis Spicy noodles were a good... I love Thai fried rice so I'm always excited to go to a Thai restaurant. My boyfriend took me here one night and for some odd reason I didn't order Thai fried rice. I wanted to try something new so I ordered stirfry chicken (I can't remember the exact name of it on the menu, but the picture is attached). As soon as I receive my plate I was disappointed because it look like soup with a side of rice. I wasn't fond of the taste at all. My boyfriend ordered the Thai fried rice so that is what filled my belly a little. If I return, I'm hoping that I will enjoy their food. read more

Took the 5 to Borough Hall and took a charming walk on a snowy Saturday night through Brooklyn.  Walk in and was not sure what to expect, it was just the closest place I could get curry so I went!! My favorite thing about the place was the atmosphere! It was dark so it felt like a scene out of a romantic comedy where the couple might not be the first date, but the second, where the couple starts to fall for each other.  The art was modern but not gaudy, and the kitchen was open so you could see the flames. It made me feel like I was just invited into a home for dinner. I thought of the style in Joya as the simple black dress girls who wear red lipstick; not flashy but subtly stunning. It took me a couple minutes to get seated because of people doing take out orders, I was okay with it. Once seated, I was not sure what type of curry to get so the waiter guided me through the red vs green, I chose the KANG KOONG because I did not want to regret the decision the following morning.  I got it with the shrimp and the food came out within 10 minutes. One thing I thought was interesting was that the drink menu was written on with a pen! The  person who wrote it had nice handwriting but just something I did not expect. Curry: The flavors were great. It got me hooked on Curry again because the way coconut milk interacts with the spice, it soothes the soul and my throat.  I thought the veggies were sauteed to a nice temp so they did not overwhelm my mouth but just helped to soak up the curry.  I continued to add my rice onto it but I should've asked for more.  The waitstaff did not interact with me besides for taking my order, refilling my water once and to give/receive the bill from me.  I wish I would've gotten a little more interaction but it was fine, the food and whole atmosphere made up for it.   Overall: Exceptional environment + above-average curry + okay waitstaff = I'll be back :) read more

I went for my friends birthday and to start off the guy who I believe is the owner or manager is absolutely rude. The customer service was horrible. I felt like the guy was a racist because he sees 4 muslim hijabi girls and didn't even care to say hello when we were walking in. I gave a cake to the front for them to bring out at the end of the dinner. Three of us ordered the pad see yue and it was so bland however only the spicy noddles were very good and the shrimp dumplings i recommend. When it was time to bring out the cake to surprise my friend for her birthday they literally gave us the cake the same way we gave it to them. They didn't light up the candles or take the cake out of the box. What restaurant does this? It is basic common sense to at least simply take the cake out and light the candles that's why we gave it to them. They gave us the cake in the box with plates, a knife, and a lighter and basically said do it yourself. Hands down the best Thai food in Brooklyn. There's tons of seating in the restaurant, but they also have a back garden area with cute lighting. Everything on this menu is delicious and it's made with love and TONS of flavor. I've been coming here since 2008 and it never ceases to amaze me how delicious the food is. The price is very reasonable, especially considering the other food choices you have in the area. Staff is friendly and helpful and your food comes out in a timely fashion. Not sure if they take reservations, but there are usually seats available. In the off chance there aren't, you shouldn't have to wait more than 20 or 30 minutes max. I've dined at Joya several times now and must say that it is one of the best Thai food restaurants in NYC, and quite candidly one of the best restaurants in this area of Brooklyn. The value, service, atmosphere, and extensive menu are unmatched. On our most recent visit, we had the tofu tom yum soup ($4.50), grilled chicken skewers ($6), beef stir fry in chili basil sauce ($11), and chicken with green coconut curry ($11). Despite the affordable prices, the portions were large enough that we had leftovers for another meal. Everything was well seasoned and full of unique Thai flavors. There is an extensive bar in the front and an open kitchen in the back, offering a glimpse of the chefs at work and the art of their craft. This place was really good. The food was simply delicious. I had the egg rolls as an appetizer and then I had one of the main curry dishes. It was very scrumptious. To me, it seemed to be a little expensive for what it was. The venue is very nice looking and fancy but their prices are on the higher side. My friends and I only had cash with us on that day. The total bill came out to $90 and amongst all of us we had $90 EXACTLY. So we paid the bill and we headed out the door. Once we were out of the restaurant, one of the guys that works here comes chasing us down demanding that we return because we didn't tip. I came back and tipped him $5 with my credit card. He then proceeded to say that it wasn't enough because it had been a $90 order. 1. I understand it's common courtesy to tip. But understand that not everyone is going to tip you no matter how large the order is. We simply didn't have the funds to tip. We're thankful we at least had enough to pay for the food. Some people will tip you nothing, and some people will tip you $100. So when you don't get a tip, DEAL WITH IT! It's not always personal and it's not always that we're being selfish, we simply don't have too much to give. Besides, your prices are already high. 2. It's super unprofessional to run up to people and demand them to come back and pay for tip. And it's even more unprofessional to try and force them to pay what you want them to pay. read more

Joya NY BK Cobble Hill 1pm Friday 10th February 2017 Four Stars The store front is unassuming but the place is rather expansive with garden seating in the back. Tiff and I sat in a table in the back. We shared a tom yum soup with shrimp, fried tofu, a papaya salad, and chicken Pad Thai. The food was good. The soup was large, semi-spicy with large pieces of shrimp. The papaya salad had a lot of shredded papaya, carrots, lettuce, and tomatoes. The taste was on the sour side with a light level of heat. The fried Tofu came our golden yellow color and we got an accidental dumpling which was quite enjoyable. The pad Thai had a brown color with nice sweet citrus-y flavor. I was in Brooklyn to see some of the Art with my friends and we decided to come here for dinner. One of my friends had never had Thai food so she was a bit skeptical but from the moment we walked into the place we fell in love. The restaurant is so cute with intimate seating and candles on every table. Since it was nice we decided to sit outside where they had table and benches with pillows. I loved it. For appetizers we ordered the Fried Calamari and Chicken Satay. The calamari was cooked perfectly and was not overly friend or greasy. The chili sauce that came with it was one of the best I ever had. For entrée I had the Shrimp Pad See Ew which was so yummy. My friend who never had thai food tried it and thought it was amazing. My two friends ordered the special of Salmon with mango salad and stick rice. From what I could see their portion was very generous and they both loved it. Used to come here with my friends from high school but today has been my first time here since 2013! The ambiance is great if you're looking for a romantic feel (especially in the evening) there's a nice candle on every table and most of the lighting is from a strong of bulbs. Now lets get to the food! My partner and I weren't too hungry so we shared a large fried calamari and spicy drunken noodles. The portions of both are LARGE! We considered getting a small calamari but opted for the large and we only ate about half. The spicy noodles are flat, long, and very wide. Again portions are great, definitely share entrées to get a little bit of everything. Everything seems great, why 3 stars?! I hyped this place up a lot to my partner and was a bit disappointed. Of course I know many things change over the course of 3 years but I was disappointed in the lack of seasoning in all the food... the calamari was great but a few pinches of salt go a long way (there aren't any salt shakers on the table so we were left with bland squid). Joya has always been one of my favorite restaurants to go to. I've taken friends family and coworkers and every time has been five stars across the board. Joya is a sister restaurant to two other restaurants which are song which is located in park slope brooklyn and sea which is located in williamsburg. Out of the three joya is my favorite. Unlike the other two restaurants the food is consistently great here. Some reccomendations are: Appetizers: Calamari Spare ribs Chicken or vegetable spring rolls Main entree: Chicken pad see ew Chicken fried rice Chicken and oyster sauce (comes with veggies and white rice) For desert the banana spring rolls are a must try. They are sweet banana spring rolls topped with ice cream and chocolate syrup. The wings came out first, my first impression was that it was over fried. It wasn't that golden crispy color, but instead a dark brown color. The flavor was there, even though they call it BBQ there's hints of curry as well. Then came the entrees- the catfish dish was pretty good but the thing that bothered me was their produce is not fresh. I was picking through the Chinese broccoli as all I find is black and yellow spots on the veggies which is sign of the veggies going bad. The spicy flat noodle was definitely no where near what I expected. If you eat flat noodles a lot, you know it's not good when the flat noodles are all glued together as big lumps where sauce can't even get to. There was no bounce to the noodles and super greasy as well. They also serve it with a lemon which I have never seen before. We put some on to see if it taste better but it ruins the dish even more. I've been to Joya a couple of times- the pad thai is consistently delicious. A friend who was visiting from Guatemala joined me on this past visit and she enjoyed the shrimp pad thai while I enjoyed the chicken pad thai. I would love to give another star, but I really struggle with the lack of ventilation for the open concept kitchen. The dining room is hazy and when you leave you smell like food. I wish there was a solution to this so that I could enjoy dinner and then not feel like I need to rush home, wash, and change. read more
