The restaurant is intimate and cozy, the service friendly and the food delicious. Whether you go there or get take out, the pad thai and pad see ew always slap. I have visited Born Thai many times, but my last experience guaranteed that I will not be returning. I ordered a Thai iced tea at the server's suggestion, not realizing it contained milk. I took a few sips and did not like it, and the untouched drink sat on my table through my entire meal. Not once did anyone check in about it or acknowledge that it had been untouched. Even after I ordered a soda, the original drink remained on the table without a single mention. When I received the bill, I politely asked if the Thai iced tea could be removed. The staff said they needed to check with the manager. This resulted in a phone call that lasted well over five minutes, which felt unnecessary for something so simple. The final answer was that they were not allowed to remove an item simply because a customer did not like it. They were willing to remove a $3 soda, but not the item that remained completely full. Good restaurants value customer experience. I ordered an appetizer, an entrée, and side, and the drink was left completely untouched. This should have been an easy exception. Instead, it was handled with indifference and the response lacked care, basic hospitality, and felt very dismissive. I paid the full bill and left. Because most of the customers here are people of color, I also want to note that the lack of effort, flexibility, or consideration felt especially disappointing. The food was delicious in the addition to the spring rolls with the plum sauce was such a sweet new delight for us. It pains me to leave such a low review, but I had to share the horrible experience I had here tonight. I have been coming to Born Thai for YEARS, but after tonight, I am DONE. I came in after work after a long, tiring day. When I walked in, I was not greeted. The woman I assume to be a manager or owner was on the phone and watched me walk in. She ignored me as I chose a seat and kept talking on the phone. The restaurant only had literally six people and a bunch of empty tables. It was only after I sat on the cushioned booth in the back that she runs up to me and tells me I can't sit at the table I chose. I explain the restaurant is empty, and ask why I can't sit down. She didn't have a valid answer and so she turned abruptly to go. I then wait over 15 mins to be acknowledged and was never given or even offered a glass of water. The hostess purposely walked past me several times and tended to people around me. Finally, the hostess comes to take my order. I tell her that she is making me feel like she doesn't want me to eat. She then replies, "eat if you want, or go." Wow. Well, I was dying of hunger and craving the food, so I stayed against my better judgment. I tried to place my order and asked to make my dish non-spicy. I wanted Pork Krapow over White Rice, just not too spicy. Before I could even finish my sentence, the hostess yells "NO." Wow. I then tell the hostess that I have ordered or eaten from their establishment at least 50 times and there has never been an issue making dishes less spicy until dealing with her. She finally relents and tells me she will tell the chef not to make the food spicy. Luckily, a waitress emerged from the back and took over. She brought out my food and was very sweet. I ate my meal without further incident. The food was delicious and my waitress was nice, but that hostess really ruined the experience for me. Appetizers we tried the Curry puff, light crispy, nice dipping sauce they were very tasty, love me a good curry puff. Main dishes we tried, Garlic chicken & See-ew noodles w beef, both were very good dishes, nice flavor to meats, good noodles & beef very good. Also tried the Basil Fried rice & the Ginger sauce w meat, both very good. The food was very tasty and had good portion size. Everything tasted freshly made. We also didn't have to wait too long for our food. Servers were kind. I will definitely come her again when I'm the area. A must t try for Thai food in the downtown Brooklyn area. We ordered various drinks from the menu. For appetizers we had chicken curry puffs, wings, and shrimp roll. For our entrees we had crab fried rice and Thai fried rice with shrimp. The shrimp were jumbo and the crab meat was real large pieces of lump crab. This restaurant uses quality ingredients and is not stingy with the portions. I have avoided Born Thai, because it was opened during the beginning of the gentrification of Downtown Brooklyn. Just passing by it, reminded me of all the displacement and loss for us as lifelong New Yorkers especially of color. I think I ate there once and just never came back. Nothing about them , just wanted to support the Thai restaurants that had been in Brooklyn longer . Tonight , after a work event , there were only a few customers all whom were Black folks in the space, so we decided to come in. In fact for the entire night the only customers that came in were Black people which made me believe that I would support Born Thai more going forward. I enjoyed my crispy duck pad thai and my friend enjoyed their Massaman curry with vegetables. Everything was enjoyable until we were told it was Last Call. I know I look young for my age , but I'm in my fifties and just don't move as quickly anymore especially when eating a meal. At the same time, I also have been a server and totally understand wanting your shift to end ASAP . I just didn't expect and it was not told to us that "Last Call" meant we had less than 30 minutes to leave. I wasn't even allowed to finish my food . I asked to bag my leftovers myself just to have a minute to eat ,but Nope it needed to be sent to the kitchen. My friend , put down their credit card 1st and as I was reaching for mine, the server took up the card and left . Just asking her to come back to take my card was met with a dirty look. I didn't even get to say whether we were splitting the check or not , because she was already gone. Even as I was trying to figure out the tip, everyone from back and front of house were sitting at the bar ready to leave. The restaurant says it closes at 11p and we were outside by 11:02, literally because it felt like we were being forced out. It Just felt like the servers / managers didn't care that they were rushing and forcing Black people to leave the restaurant . It has just been such a long time that I have experienced such poor customer service especially on a Sat night in gentrified Brooklyn. read more

Went here a few days ago, and I was so underwhelmed. The ambiance is great, the staff is great, but the food is very unseasoned and expensive, and the drinks are weak and expensive. There's no reason for vegetable spring rolls to be $14. If you're going to overcharge us, make it worthwhile, at least. I've been here about eight times, and that will probably be my last visit unless they revamp the menu and adjust the prices. read more

I may need to give Born Thai another try as I had a mixed experience. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to seat us quickly. The lychee sweet tea was a bit too concentrated for my liking but if you are really into sweet tea, you would probably like it. The chicken satay was the star of the night! I've had it from other restaurants before but this one was flavor packed and I appreciated that they put the sauces on the side. I ordered the shrimp Thai fried rice and it was good but could have used more flavor. I actually didn't taste any seasoning on the shrimp but will say they give you a good amount and they are jumbo. My friend ordered the Pork Krapow and really loved it. I tried it and it was flavor packed, a bit spicy but they do warn you of that. The waiter was very attentive and made sure your water cup was always full. It is a smaller restaurant but nice neighborhood feel and has a stocked bar. Ive passed this restaurant many times over the years and sadly never really noticed it but now that Ive finally tried it, i'm sad that I missed out for so long. Let me start by saying that the place has a cute and cozy vibe but it is very very small so I would suggest going at a less busier time to avoid long waits. The basil fried rice was very delicious and I was happy that they were able to make alterations due to my seafood allergy, this is something that many other Thai restaurant are unable to do. The star of the show however was the curry puffs, probably legit the best Ive ever had. The drinks are also pretty tasty, not very strong but I don't like my drinks too strong. The only issue I had with the service was how long it took our food to come out. Like seriously a 30 minute wait. It was a good thing we had such a fun time but my stomach was growling. When informed of this, the female employee with the headscarf mentioned with an attitude that she needed to go recalculate the bill to determine the split in payment...the problem was her despicable attitude, body language, and unprofessionalism...it's when she walked away with the nastiest attitude and flung her hands up in the air and muttered under her breath that truly made the experience distasteful. I immediately inquired if there was an issue and informed her of how unprofessional she was. She continued going tit for tat with me and mocking me. It was an unnecessary discourse in the restaurant. If it were busy maybe I would have understood her frustration so long as it was delivered professionally. There were 3 other patrons there. I highly recommend that this place not be patronized. The drinks took a long time to come and they barely had any alcohol. The food was bland and had no flavor. The chicken dumplings tasted like they were steamed in dirty dishwater. The duck in the duck rolls was a couple of days old and was solid as a rock. The scam they tried to pull was charging a mandatory 20% tip. That's illegal in NY. Even if they add it you can ask for it to be lowered or removed. The waitress started arguing with us over it. So unprofessional. Just a few blocks down from the Barclay Center, Born Thai is easy to get to from the Barclay Center and local MTA transit. My dining experience was not only a fantastic one; I had the opportunity to try something new. This particular dining experience allowed me to try their lump crab fried rice. If you have the chance to dine at Born Thai, I encourage you to try it. Honestly, when I saw it on the menu, I got a bit nervous because immediately, I had visions of immigration crab meat. I asked the hostess/waitress, and she assured me it's made with real lump crab and not the imitation stuff. Again, I would like to be able to write, go, it's a hit, but you will experience that when you give them a try. Also, be sure to enjoy one of their delicious cocktails. I walked in and the waiter checked my vax card and my friend who was meeting me was already there. He walked me over to her. She already had a drink and I inquired about the happy hour special since I did not see a menu for it on the table. I was told it was removing a few dollars from the signature cocktails listed. I ordered a moscow mule and it was ok. We ordered appetizers. Wings, tempura shrimp, and spring rolls. They were all good but nothing outstanding. I ordered the pad see ew with beef and shrimp and it felt dry . Usually i get this dish and it has some sauce on it still from the cook. This felt drier than usual. The beef was also tough. When I asked for some sauce I was told they would only be able to sell me 3ozs of it which was the first time that has happened to me. All in all Born was just ok. The staff was attentive. Visited Born thai today for a late lunch/early dinner. At 5:30 the restaurant wasn't too crowded; we got seated immediately. I had the lychee martini and we shared some appetizers to start. The lychee martini was sweet and well balanced. We ordered the duck roll, calamari, curry puffs and chicken satay. All delicious! For dinner I had the tamarind duck- quite flavorful, it's served with veggies and jasmine rice. The sauce served with it was perfect and comes on the side so you can control the amount you want on your meal. My neice had the salmon chili avocado. She loved it: slightly spicy with salmon cooked perfectly; it was served w veggies and jasmine rice. My sister had the Kana Moo Krob: Crispy pork belly sautéed with house sauce, Chinese broccoli served with jasmine rice. This was a welcome recommendation from our server and it was totally awesome. She loved it. Although we were full, we shared the lava cake dessert: also excellent. This came with vanilla ice cream. I thought I would leave a more thorough review while visiting.
