The unique thing is the self-serve purple rice, barley tea, kimchi, and gaktugi. The dishes are so fresh and delicious. Made to perfection. I ordered the bibimbap (not the hot stone) and it was so fresh and delicious perfectly seasoned. My husband ordered the Yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) and he inhaled that so fast it was so good. My daughter loves the seafood pancake (and it was HUGE) and my little daughter loves the manjoo, fried dumplings. The kimchi was very new and crunchy and the purple rice is perfectly cooked. I was getting my hair done at my nearby private salon suites (thanks Mark Vang) and thank Goodness I was wearing a smock because I was drooling as soon as I saw my precious favourite stew; SOON DUBU JIGAE! The reviews mentioned various dishes I've yet to try but when I walked in, I marched straight to the counter and ordered one seafood stew! I wish they had the mixed option (beef & seafood) but I was thrilled to be there. A quick swipe of my cc for a mere $10 later I grabbed a seat and less than 5 minutes I was being called to grab my tray. Kimchi, various radishes and purple rice, a lot less side dishes than I'm used to, but gorgeous nevertheless! A fresh egg had already been cracked into the bubbling pot of soft tofu stew, full of small mussels, calamari, a few shrimp, baby scallops, scallions, and lots of gochuchang aka korean red pepper The broth was perfectly rich and spicy, I was reminded of the first time I had soondubu over 15 years prior, in the wee hours of the morning back near Buford Highway farmer's market (Georgia) at TOFU HOUSE! Yea, it was like our version of Waffle House, after a night of clubbing, instead of waffles! Dude. I can't believe I didn't order a ton of food to go, but I had to hurry home so I ate half, took the rest to finish at home. Everything is still self-service so order at the front register and pay, wait to be called and pick up your food, then put your tray away. The food I ordered is delicious and had great portions. Just got in for late lunch. Our first time here. This place is a Mom and Pop's Korean kitchen. A hole in the wall type of thing. Self service style from placing your order, pay your bill to cleaning-up your table and packing your left over food. No need to tip. I ordered bul-go-gi and dumpling soup. Each order is being prepared and cook from scratch. There were two or three chefs in the kitchen doing it. We could see them from the dining area, since the Kitchen is open wide. After paying, you'll get a number from their cashier. The veggie dumplings came out first and after a few minutes our beef bul-gogi was brought to our table. The dumplings was served in a pot, boiling hot. No need to put condiments to it, it's delicious. The beef were thinly sliced, marinated well and served with sautéed onions and bean sprouts on top of it. It's super duper good! Mostly local Koreans frequent this Korean kitchen. That means the food is authentic and tasty. No doubt about it. By the way, most of the food in their menu is $9.00 per order with free unlimited purple rice (no take out), kimchi, spicy pickled radish and sliced pickled jalapeño peppers. Also, their sweet rice drinks and barley tea are free. Serving portion is above average. Serving staff are courteous and kind. read more

Great place to have a meal. Went here on a Saturday afternoon. There were a couple of patrons and the place was very quiet and clean. I was blown away at the simplicity of their color coded menu. The menu consists of photographs of traditional Korean dishes. Their menu appeals to the visual learner or what I like to call the visual eater who picks a dish based on a picture. The food is exceptional. My favorite were the BBQ beef ribs and yukgaejan (Spicy broth, vegetables, and clear string noodles). I love the fact that the kimchi is unlimited, although there is a sign that reminds you to take what you will eat. I will definitely coming back to this place to explore other picture menu options. I must have driven by Joy Kitchen a million times and missed it. This was my first time here and I'm going to go ahead and declare myself a regular. I got the Yukgaejang (medium-spicy beef soup) and beef bulgogi, as well as the complimentary rice and kimchi. The portions are huge and the prices reasonable. The Yukgaejang is now my favorite soup ever. I got it medium spiced and it was perfect - just spicy enough and full of flavor. It comes out bubbling hot and is so comforting on a cold night. There are a bunch of ingredients I couldn't name, but it definitely had clear noodles, shredded beef, some kind of string bean, egg, and other veggies. Again, I highly recommend getting this or a similar soup with the same broth. I also got the beef bulgogi, which was good, but not the best I've ever had, especially compared to the Korean restaurants in the Harry Hines area. Maybe I might have had a higher opinion of it if I hadn't tasted the Yukgaejang first. But paired with the kimchi and rice, it served it's purpose. As far as the complimentary sides, kimchi and purple rice that I tried, I'd give the kimchi 4.5/5 stars. Although it's spicy, the spice isn't overwhelming, and has really great flavor. In contrast, the purple rice has zero flavor IMO. It's not like fried rice and is definitely meant to be eaten with something else. As other Yelpers mentioned, this restaurant is definitely self service, but I'm happy to clear my own table at these prices. I can't wait to try out the rest of the menu! read more

At Joy Kitchen, the dish is $16, which is cheaper than most places that we've been to. In addition to the cheaper price, the quality of meat was amazing! They were thick, tender, and juicy! The restaurant also didn't skimp out on the amount if meat either. The marinade is a bit on the sweeter side. I was running low on time but once I got my food I couldn't resist the smell so I opened up my to go container to eat a few bites, instantly the cashier walks up to me and says I can't eat here since I ordered to go she then stated that I need to pack my food up and leave. I got the seafood tofu soup, and it was good. They do include an egg and it, so that's was a big plus. I wasn't wowed overall, and it didn't stand out compared to the other ones I've had around Irving (since it seems to be a mini Korea town there). Maybe it's not fair to compare them since I did order it as a take out orer? But then, there was a small mussel shell in my soup... The rice they serve is purple! I've had purple rice before, but it's usually not the grain most places serve. Kudo points to Joy Kitchen for that, but the rice I got was mushy. We've been to Joy kitchen before and were excited about the unlimited side dishes (though selections are limited) so decided to return for the "joy." He ordered the Seafood Tofu Soup and I got the Kimchi. His soup was pretty flavorful (he says it lacked ingredients) but my Kimchi soup was suuuuper watered down.... The Kimchi in the soup literally tasted like plain nappa cabbages. I was hungry but I couldn't eat it.... decided to take it home to add flavoring myself for next time. To think of it, the kimchi for the side dishes were not that good either. It was just red looking nappa cabbages. I'm pretty sure that's the Kimchi they used for the soup, hence the bland flavor.
