My friends and I decided to order takeout from this spot so we could enjoy it while watching the Paul vs. Tyson fight lol. The food was prepared quickly, and we got everything to go without any issues. I can't say much about the service or ambiance since it was a takeout order, but from what I saw, the restaurant has a traditional Korean vibe. I tried the beef soondubu, and it was just alright. Personally, I prefer places where I can customize the spice level, and I usually go for a vegetable soondubu, but they didn't have that option here, so I went with beef. One highlight was the use of purple rice, which was a nice touch! I also tried my friend's mandukuk, and it was fine. The real surprise came with my friend's galbi bibimbap, which wasn't what we expected. It wasn't the traditional bibimbap we were used to; it had bell peppers, onions, and a sauce, which made it quite different from any bibimbap I've had, even in Korea. It's still bibimbap in name, but definitely not the classic version we're familiar with. The kimchi and pickled onions were fresh, but not fermented the way I'm used to. Overall, I do think this place is authentic, but it just didn't hit the spot for me personally. I always liked this place.. but the last time I went, my experience left a lot to be desired. I ordered a seafood tofu soup with NO SPICY. I don't eat spicy. I never cared for anything spicy. Usually the lady who's always there was able to make my order right each time. But that last time, some guy took my order. Don't know if he's not or something but I've never seen him before. Anyways, I told the guy that I didn't want spicy and each time I said that, he'd tell me, ok, we can do a little spicy. When I finally got my food, it was VERY spicy. I took it up to complain and the lady said that's what I specified. I kept telling her no. She tried to blame me by saying, next time, just say no spicy. I kept saying, "i did, plenty of times." I also complained that the guy wasn't listening when I kept repeating my order. So, the lady ended up remaking the food when I pressed the issue. Honestly, it's gonna be a while before I go back again if I decided to do that at all. I've been a regular customer and that lady should understand that this is how I usually order. I'm tired of going through this in Korean restaurants. They always mess up your order and blame you for it. For a long time, they were the only place where I can get Korean food with decent service. First time here and I went for the the Bulgogi. The beef was tasty and it included these dumpling type pieces that were interesting. The rice was purple and surprisingly good as well. Been a downward sloop since I started going 5 years ago. Its been getting more pricey, and the chicken from the fire chicken has been reduced to add more bean sprouts. Get it spicy, its pretty good and the rice cakes are perfect. One of my favorite drinks, the sweet rice drink that used to be free is now $2 a pop. I do not recommend the dolsot bibimbap. This has been my go-to Korean joint for weekday lunch for the past 3 years. It is just a bit down the street from my company. The interior is medium sized, but due to how crowded it can get around lunchtime, it can feel smaller than it looks. When you first walk in, the regular menu is on the right-side wall while the daily specials are on the left-side wall. Order up at the register, get a number, and then grab a seat. You have to go back up front to get your food when they call your number so be sure to pay attention. Everything is self serve and self clean. The kimchi cabbage, daikon, purple rice, sweet rice tea, and barley tea (all complimentary) are to the left of the pickup area. Please only get what you can eat and leave some for the rest of us. There are two racks/carts near the door for self cleaning. Like I mentioned above, it can get super packed around lunchtime (12 to 1). It can get even more crowded on rainy and/or cold days. I highly recommend coming early or coming with a backup plan in case it is too crowded or cooking time gets backed up. There have been many a times when I couldn't even get takeout because the cook time exceeded 30 minutes. The table in the middle is connected so sit there if you don't mind rubbing elbows with a stranger. We ordered two tofu soups. Tofu soups come with a choice of kimchi, beef, pork, or seafood. We chose one beef and one seafood. They came out literally boiling. They were very spicy and filled with lots of goodies. The seafood one had lots of variety of seafood and the beef one had a ton of beef. Every price on the menu already includes tax. Most entrees are the same price - $9.75. There are a few special entrees for $12+. All of which is absolutely worth it given the quality atmosphere, and complimentary items. read more

The quality and food at Joy Kitchen has definitely declined since I went prior to Covid. I used to really enjoy this place and used to recommend it a ton. It used to be a really amazing hole in the wall place that had good prices with quality food, but for the current price point and the food, it is not worth it to me anymore. I ordered the ddubokki, which is what I really enjoyed last time, and it fell completely flat this time. It tasted bland, and the only reaction I had was to the spice, the heat level was fine, but the flavor was lacking. My friend ordered the bulgolgi, and it came with a ton of bean sprouts, but not a lot of meat (unlike what the menu picture displayed) I would not recommend it anymore, and do not plan on coming back here anytime soon, as there are better Korean places in the Dallas area that are more enjoyable! read more

My coworker wanted soup and suggested that we visit Joy Kitchen. It was on a nice cool day so I figured why not. The restaurant is very small inside, with enough tables and chairs for about 30 people. My coworkers knew right away what they wanted to order. I needed some time. I wasn't quite sure what to expect or what to order, so I got the Seafood Tofu soup. One of my coworkers got the Beef Tofu soup and the other had the Kimchi soup. As we sat waiting for our soup, we had a bowl of purple rice and kimchi. This was my first time with everything - the kimchi, purple rice and the soup. I was all up for new experiences and I wasn't totally turned off. The kimchi was tasty. I even ate with the chopsticks that they provided on the tables. When our soup was ready, it came out in a small cast iron bowl which was way too hot to hold. I was impressed! My soup bubbled like it was still boiling for about 2 minutes after I got it back to my seat. The soup was so flavorful. I could've had just the soup broth over the purple rice. I ended up putting the soup in my rice bowl. What can I say - I'm a Southern girl and anytime I can make it like gumbo, I will do it. It was like a party in my mouth! Although I like seafood, I wasn't expecting clams or mussels in my soup. Still, it was delicious. The portion size was enormous. I thought I wouldn't get close to finishing this massive bowl, but I came close. I think that had I gotten something with chicken, I would've finished it. As I looked around, I saw that mostly Koreans visit this restaurant which speaks for the authenticity of the food.
