We went the DIY route, measuring and installing 6 solar screens ourselves. Ours is a new home with aluminum-framed windows. The back of our home faces west, so the afternoon sun in the summer can be brutal. We bought the wider framed screens with a cross brace, since our windows are rather large (35" x 70"). We chose 90% screens because of the western exposure. Ordering the screens was easy, particularly since all of the windows we wanted to screen are the same size. But our windows have narrow recessed edges so we weren't sure at first about installation. We didn't want to void the window warranty by using screws. So we sized the screens to match the protruding portion of the windows and purchased heavy-duty outdoor Velcro strips (1" x 4") to attach the screens. Our process was to attach the fuzzy side of the Velcro in the same location on the frame of each solar screen. This made them all interchangeable. Then we put the matching half of the Velcro in place on the screen. Lastly, we removed the backing, lined up the screens, and carefully put each screen in place, pressing firmly to secure. We chose to attach Velcro only on the sides of the screen frames, for ease of removal when we want the sun's heat and light in the winter. The frame color we chose closely matches the original window frames and house trim, and the black screen matches our screen porch, so the solar screens look very much like they belong. I recommend you be choosy when selecting frame and screen colors, as they can change the overall look of your home. Picking up your DIY screen order is an efficient process: when the screens are ready (ours took about a week), an email arrives with directions to a small industrial park, a code to enter the stowage space, and the location within of your screens. Once inside, there are doors to compartments that contain orders. This is how 24-hour pickup is made possible. My only gripe, a minor one, is that one of the 6 screens has an obviously darker area, perhaps a crease in the fabric. But, all in all, this was a great experience. We expect our west-facing rooms will be more comfortable this summer than the last one. read more

I can't believe it took me so long to consider solar screens. They have made such an improvement in the internal temperature and external aesthetics. They really gave our house a nice face lift. We are very pleased with the overall service from Josh and Mike. They were pleasant and very easy to work with. Mike even changed a light bulb for me! How cool is that? We did both 80 and 90% screens in black. We get a lot of sun so we ended up covering 90% of our windows. Yes, certain rooms in the house are quite a bit darker, but, it's not bad. Kinda like having tint on your windows. Take what I just said into consideration if you decide to get solar screens (and you should). They will make the house darker, so, if you have windows that get little to no sun, don't screen them. You can use that light to offset the darkness. As for the windows on the front of your house you'll want to screen all of those for aesthetic purposes. Josh and Mike came out and measured our windows on schedule and had us a quote within a couple of days. Once we decided on which screens would be 90 vs 80% and such we sealed the contract. Josh wanted the money up front, which we were reluctant about at first, but, when he explained that he has to special cut the screens for each window and can't sell them if we back out of the contract, it was completely understandable. We were happy to pay in advance and you will be too. This has been a great investment in reducing energy usage in our home. From the moment I spoke to Josh over the phone, to the time I spent with his very sweet wife Paula, the entire process was smooth, easy and as perfect as it gets. Just as I remembered it being two yeas ago in 2015 when they put screens on the front of my home back then. Other contractor types out there could learn a lot from the Hobbs. I wish the Hobbs did more than just solar screens :). In 2015 we had the Hobbs put 90% solar screens on the front of my home. Now, after having the solar screens for a while, we now wanted to finish off the rest of the windows. We put the 80% solar screens on all the rest of the windows. The screens were put on a few weeks ago, and the difference in our home is remarkable. We absolutely love our screens. We also love the privacy, it's a really cool feeling. After talking up my solar screens last Summer, a co worker of mine got solar screens himself, and he found someone to do it cheaper. He told me that he found someone that was $100 less, so he went with that person. My co worker told me it was a HUGE mistake, he said that it was with some young guy that talked a good game, said all the right things when they met. He said he had a lot of trouble that the screens were not tight, they fit loosely and didn't fit well within his windows. I kiddingly told him, lesson learned, you should have gone with the Hobbs. My mother in law, who is a Hyde Park perfectionist, went with the Hobbs, and she like us, had no problems, she had her screens put on perfectly without any issues. So, my recommendation is to stop looking, and just give the Hobbs a call and be done with the looking around process. I highly recommend Josh Hobbs Solar Screen Services for three reasons: 1) Excellent product, 2) Outstanding customer service, and 3) Ease of doing business Excellent product as he provided us two options to use to keep the heat out of the room. We selected the 90% solar screens for our master bedroom where there are no trees to shade it. Keep in mind we have 9 windows of which 5 windows facing the west side. We were suffering at night time when our a/c could not cool down the room fast enough as the sun heat would radiate through the window coverings for a good six hours. After he installed the solar screens, our master bedroom totally changed from a sauna to a comfortable relaxing and inviting bedroom. We are now able to sleep at night with comfort. I hired Josh to put solar screens on every window on my home and he did a fantastic job. The process is simple: - Request a quote (requires a small deposit) specifying which windows you want to have done - Josh comes out and measures the windows to prepare a full estimate. - Once you've paid the estimate, the screens are made (every screen is custom made), delivered, and installed. They even haul off your old screens if desired. The only decisions you have to make are which windows to put screens on, what color screens/frames, and if you want the 80% or 90% (referring to how much light is blocked). Josh left samples of each frame as well as the different materials so we could hold them up to the windows, etc. I preferred the 80% - the loss in visibility is almost unnoticeable, while with the 90% made everything look blurry. You can mix and match though, I have four windows with the 90% while the rest are 80%. When researching solar screens, I happened to run into Josh's YouTube videos which covered everything from installation methods to visibility demonstrations. It was pretty clear that he really knew what he was doing. His website also has loads of useful information. So why get solar screens? For me, it was 2 reasons: - MUCH cooler in the house. We used to put the thermostat at 75 during the day and the AC couldn't keep up. Now we have it at 78 during summer days and the AC runs infrequently. The house is more comfortable and we're paying less for energy, that's hard to beat. - The screens prevent people from seeing into open windows during the day. Really easy to order solar screens. I never met the owners, but they did everything they promised. Paula helped me pick a color over the phone using Google Earth that matched our brick perfectly. We went with the chocolate which is not as severe as the black, but gets the job done as well. I paid online, and two weeks later they were in. The screens give us great privacy, cut the heat and help keep the windows clean from rain/sprinklers. It seems like the AC is not turning on as often so I look forward to my next electric bill.
