Fried catfish, Mac and cheese, Cabbage, and Cornbread
Jennifer W.

We were in Toledo for the day, and I discovered Josephine's through Yelp. The owners are great. We told them we were from out of town, and they were so welcoming. The food is amazing also. We loved the catfish and mac & cheese the best, but the cabbage and candied yams are also great. I don't think you can go wrong with anything from this restaurant. I wish I lived closer, but believe me I will one day return to Josephine's Kitchen.

I want to start by saying, customer service was SUPERB. extremely friendly. Everyone who walked out of the kitchen said hello to me and how are you! However, I waited about 25 mins before I received my food. We didn't get drinks until the food was served and I had to ask for them. The drink options were limited (koolaid & I believe pop from a vending machine, maybe more but I wasn't told ) which I have no issue with. It made it more of a authentic and genuine experience in my mind lol. Im sad to say food was underwhelming bland . The potatoes very buttery but that's about all of the flavor. The spaghetti lacked meatiness and real flavor. Catfish was nothing special but it was seasoned very well. The Mac and cheese was separated and noodles were overcooked.. nice flavor... not "wowed". Yams were delicious! I was brought two samples to try ( potato salad & some other type of dressing) best part of my meals! The potato salad was the BEST I've ever had. I will be back because the customer service was amazing; and the reviews on all social media platforms are amazing for this place! #blackpower Total was 21$ something!

First visit to Toledo and a colleague wanted soul food. Josephine's came up and the reviews from locals and visitors made it easy to give it a try. I am visiting from the deep south and appreciate how the staff and patrons were friendly and made you feel welcome. The food was fresh, flavorful, and filling. Sunday is a packed house so call in ahead to place your order.

This is on some slap yo mama type good ish! Being real, It did look a lil sketch bc it's essentially a house turned into a restaurant but don't let that fool you. The food was made to order so it was hot and fresh and that mac and cheese is honestly where it's at! I would highly recommend this place for some good soul food!

Prices are $10-15 for pub type food so not bad So this is your late night grub spot in my opinion. Its midnight. We got a couple versions of the soul rolls which are egg rolls with different items inside. We got the Philly cheesesteak roll, buffalo chicken, jerk chicken. Also tried burgers and chilli cheese fries. They really need to upgrade their to go containers. The prices are inflated when using Doordash so use it to upgrade your to go. They are using the cheap styrofoam containers and you have egg roll type items so guess what happens when you get them? You get soggy egg rolls. Especially the jerk and buffalo chicken. They put the jerk and buffalo sauce on the outside of the Roll so it's just a soggy mess that honestly I got tired of fooling with it. Should be able to pick up n eat an eggroll. The flavor and everything was okay but the point of getting an egg roll is to have that crunchy type taste right?. The burger was well done with no options to remove onions or other items you don't like. It had zero flavor to me. The best thing that I had was the chili cheese fries and I don't particularly like chili but it was after midnight so post bar food. I think if they upgrade their to-go containers the rolls could be a highlight but for right now I'm cool on ordering from them.

Wow! Passing by at…read moredinner time and saw the pepper steak special on their billboard, so we stopped in. The manager met us and told us he was short on staff, but he would be happy to seat us if we wanted to dine in. It was a completely on the fly accommodation, and was very much appreciated. The restaurant was spotless with a "warm", friendly atmosphere. I had the pepper steak I was after and the Mrs. had the meatloaf. The first bite of my dish stopped me in my tracks, it tasted exactly like my grandfathers recipe. The flavor was completely perfect. And the rice peppers and sauce melted together with the flank cuts, which were tender and popping with flavor on every bite. It came with a balanced cornbread muffin to help shovel the happy goodness onto my fork. And the portion size, well. I usually clean my plate, but not tonight 3/4 of the way in I had to call it because I was absolutely stuffed. The Mrs. meatloaf was tender and moist and packed with flavor too. She ordered the ketchup glaze with it which was good, but was a little too sweet for my taste. Her dish came with three sides, mashed potatoes with gravy, corn, and green beans. It's kind of hard to screw those up, and it's just as hard to make them stellar too. And that's just what they were, superbly stellar! There was a definite note of love and pride in the cooking. I can't believe I've overlooked J Mae's for so long. I will be going back again and again to sample all of their awesome menu.

The current tenants are serving up a mixed bag of southern fare, burgers and a bit of soul food along the way. Sadly today, the one thing they were out of was the one thing I came in for... the gumbo. Long story short, I will be back because I've heard it's really good. As for the burgers? Super fresh with a home cooking vibe. The fries? Cooked to order with skins on and really great! I added cheese and recommend you do as well. To note: their menu is super limited in addition to their "daily" specials, but it looks like their "daily" specials might be available all the time. Also note: beverage offerings are super limited. No tea or coffee. Just canned soda and bottled water. Next visit, I'm going to hopefully try that gumbo... and maybe some fried fish. Hoping this small joint succeeds, as it adds a missing element to downtown Toledo. Super friendly staff and great prices. This is not fancy food, it's just good food.

I didn't request chicken or anything on it as I didn't want to spend the extra money (or have the company pay extra, more precisely). Our orders were called in and I didn't think anything further of it. When the order arrived, the staff handed out containers of food. I waited and waited and waited. At the end, there was an extra grilled chicken salad (what I would have ordered if I really got what I wanted) - and they handed it to me. YAY! The salad was much like a cobb - with some mixed greens in addition to iceberg lettuce. There was some cheddar, cukes, egg, cut up chicken breast and more. It came with dressing, but I do eat my salads dry. There was enough stuff on it that I really didn't miss having a dressing (I do like oil and vinegar - but again, wouldn't get that on an order being delivered in). Was the salad the best ever? No. But considering I had packed fruit and assume they would bring in something I don't eat, I was quite happy and enjoyed my lunch. I would definitely order this again so I return and be given the same menu options.
