Wow! We're driving home to Chicago from vacation in Virginia and found this spot for lunch in Toledo. This was the best meal of our entire vacation! I had fried chicken wings, potato salad, green beans & corn bread. My husband had fried catfish, fried okra, greens & corn bread. It was all fantastic. The food is all made to order, fresh--that is a rare treat when getting fried food in a restaurant--Can't remember the last time I had fried chicken (or potato salad) that good. The owner was there and was really friendly, as was the waitress. They had a high chair for our toddler and were patient with us and the mess the baby made. Our son loved the food just as much as we did. The food was very reasonably priced too! We will be coming here every time we are in the area. This is the best soul food in Toledo. I ordered two rib dinners and a large side of greens. I ordered it for my lunch at work so the food had to be reheated. I was picking at the greens while the rest of my food was warming. When I tell you , these greens are soo good I'm sitting here eating them COLD. I did get to heat them up and they were even better. I went with a friend to this place and let me say..... finger licking good! I was a little hesitant at first as I'm from the south and no one has soul food like they south so I gave it a shot and it was with it! The wings were fried to perfection and the greens was to die for!! I really did t care for the macaroni that much but them sweet potatoes baby!! Made me wanna smack my granny! Been meaning to get here for a while and was glad to finally make it. First, we accidentally did the right thing and showed up "late" on a Sunday, the staff assured us that was the best time to come because it gets so packed early in the day after church. They also recommend calling your order in ahead of time. Only bummer is that sell out of ribs quick, so we'll have to save those for a future trip. We had the place to ourselves though and everyone was super duper friendly, so we got off to a good start. Josephine's is a pretty simple place, small, sparse, not big on presentation or decor, but big on personality and flavor. In that way, it's like a lot of "soul food" carryout a in Toledo. Since there were four of us, all newbies, we kind of created our own buffet and got the smothered pork chops, fried chicken wings, and meat loaf. For the price, there was SO much food!! We brought bags home. That said, the pork chops were fantastic, so incredibly tender and with a great flavor. Interesting, they aren't fried, so they aren't crispy and dry. They come absolutely swimming in gravy, which is savory and spiced just right. They fall apart on the fork and melt in your mouth as you fish them out of gravy, which happily splashes all over the rest of the food in your styrofoam box (how all meals are served) making everything taste delicious. The chicken wings - there are a ton - are so crispy, but not over done, lightly breaded, but not too much, and the breading is spiced and flavored so that it's tasty and exciting but not over whelming. That's kind of the theme of Josephine's. Similarly, the meat loaf is interesting because it's dense, not mushy and loose like a lot of loafs. This big bastard has integrity and it packs flavor. The sides ... You could go to Josephine's just for the sides. The mac & Cheese is right on - cheesy, buttery, rich, heavy. The collard greens are stewed just right and served with big hunks of ham and fat, the mashed potatoes are creamy, rich, and soak up all that good gravy. And there is much more. All in all, Josephine's is among the best soul food joints Toledo has. It's clean, friendly, has a little different take on the usual standards, and is committed to making you a meal that guarantees you'll have a lazy Sunday. Not for the heavy flavor seeking crowd, or gourmet soul food adventurer. This is grandmas southern cooking - heavy, savory, light on the spice, big on the love. There isnt anything that I can say bad about this place. I found them via an article named best places to eat in Toledo. So after weeks here in the area I was seriously Jonesing for a home cooked meal. Boy did they hit the spot and more. A co worker and I went in on a Sunday evening at around 8. They had the game on and a old school music radio station playing in the background. I told Jeanie that I felt like I was at a aunts house. They were so warm and welcoming. The food took a while to come out which I didnt mind because the environment was so nostalgic and welcoming. Plus good food cant be rushed. Baybee when I was that everything was on point...the mac and cheese was perfect, the seasoning was perfect. It was more than what the Dr ordered. Since in the area I have been back on 3 more occasions. I usually get the tilapia dinner with mac and cheese and greens They are good people and they have good food. You will be cheating yourself if you dont give them a try. On Sunday get there early because they do sell out. read more

Nothing fancy, just good comfort food. The baked chicken had tons of flavor and was very tender. My husband and I split a Sunday dinner with an extra side and we STILL had food left over! We ordered our food "to go" but there is a small amount of tables inside. read more

Absolutely amazing! Our first time at Josephine's Kitchen but definitely not our last. The catfish was the best I've ever had, mac-n-cheese was delicious, and the yams were off the chain! Hands down some of the best soul food we've ever had, including in Alabama and Georgia. Customer service was awesome! We found this restaurant on Yelp and the reviews were really good so we decided to try it. We were a little skeptical at first becuase we KNOW good tasting food. This place did NOT disappoint!!!!! We were driving from Chicago to Pittsburgh this past Easter Sunday and stopped by Josephine's Kitchen. The inside is very basic, but clean. The food is incredibly tasty. We had fried chicken wings, baked chicken, and smothered pork chops for our mains. I normally avoid chicken wings, but these were fried to perfection. I usually don't eat chicken when I go out as I make juicy tender stuff at home, but the meat on the baked chicken fell off the bone and was perfectly seasoned. As for the smothered pork chops, I have never had pork chops that I only needed a plastic fork to eat (no knife!!!). The sides which included fried okra, collard greens, green beans, mac and cheese, and black eyed beans were all excellent. The only drawback to this place is that it may not be good for vegetarians. You have to eat at least fish. I have to say the fried whiting looked nice (did not have). All the fried food is made to order. Would recommend this quite highly. By the way, I live in New York and have access to excellent food, and this place competes favorably. read more
