Recently moved here from Colorado. I have found most Mexican restaurants by where I live are not very good. Most dishes are spicy yet have little to no flavor. I have been buying from the fresh chili company and have them shipped to Colorado for a couple years. Found out about this restaurant owned by the same owner so my wife and I decided to try it. Service took way too long, our group was immediately seated but we ended up waiting 45 minutes before our order was taken and then another 30 minutes before our food was served. The server with the short hair and tattoos was rude, she appeared to be bothered by our requests, my sister wanted the flautas plate without any garnish and requested that they be on the side, the server had a nasty attitude and was confused by the simple request. I asked for the Papas bowl with the Chile on the side but bowl arrived with Chile inside...i could have asked for them to remake the plate but I feared they would take another 30 min to remake. Also their beverage selection is limited and they serve you a can or a bottle and don't offer any refills for the price that you pay. I enjoyed my first experience eating here. We had been on a long hike and it was nice to eat somewhere casual where we did not feel out of place. The hostess greeted us and she was very friendly and dressed very cute. Our waitress was nice and helpful. I love the atmosphere here. We had salad and a Hatch green chile cheeseburger. Chips and salsa were served beforehand. Everything was excellent. My only complaint is they use soybean oil so I could not get their french fries. read more

I was genuinely excited to try this restaurant and boy did it disappoint. Minimal drink selection (poor wine selections and no sparkling water), gas smell (two propane tanks had been left on), food took over an hour, no diaper changers in restrooms, host did not greet us for over ten minutes, and the list goes on. The Good: Went with a group of 14. We sat on the patio and the service was excellent! I thought, I would try something I've never had before, so ordered the Chilaquiles. They were very good. At our table were several burritos, a quiche, frittas, a reuben, a basic sandwich, and several salads. All got rave reviews from our group. Maybe not so Good: To me the sandwich on sub or hoagie type bun looked like a loaf of bread w/ little inside. And a friend, who had previously dined here, recommended avoiding the tuna salad. Overall: I would definitely recommend Josefina's. The food is well priced and delicious. The location is convenient for walking around picturesque Old Mesilla. And dining on the patio seems perfect for area and is shaded. read more

A CHARMING LITTLE BISTRO BUT PRICES HAVE GOTTEN TOO HIGH FOR WHAT YOU GET Josephina's Old Gate is next to the Church of San Albino (east side) off the Mesilla Plaza. It is part of a pretty and charming bed and breakfast. There is also an interesting antique shop off to the side of the bistro. Check out their web site. For dining there is the inside and the lovely courtyard. This is, of course, casual dining. This is Las Cruces. The menu is a little narrow....mostly salads, wraps, croissants, and a few other dishes are served. They serve very few "hot" meals. You do not get a lot for your money. The service at Josephina's has always been a matter of contention among visitors. Generally, I would argue, it is not as poor as people make out, but in my opinion it is usually not what it should be. Diners may feel their server has neglected them on occasion and often when they are busy the waitresses do not hustle. You may get there at a good time and have good service, but you can't always count on it. My experience with the wait staff have generally been ok....with a few minor issues now and then. The food is generally pretty good. I particularly enjoyed their BOWL OF PAPAS....potato, eggs, ham and cheese and chile. Their fruit salads and CHICKEN SALAD ON A CROISSANT are very good verging on excellent. Their potato salad is above average and I found their reuben sandwich top drawer. Salads tend to be excellent as well. The peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream was delicious. The problem as I see it is that this is not comfort food and you don't get a lot for your money. If you don't mind paying for a lovely courtyard, you'll probably enjoy this place. What to expect if you go: A real pretty place to dine....inside and in the courtyard. Service that may be ok, a limited menu, and food that is overall pretty good. Prices???? I once shelled out over thirty dollars for a couple sandwiches, a small salad, a little potato salad, and a peach cobbler. This is a $20.00-22.00 meal in other places around town. Restaurant rating = between THREE-AND-THREE-QUARTER and FOUR STARS....meaning, well above average to good for the overall dining experience. read more

One of our favorite places to eat in Old Mesilla. The food is far from what we are used to in El Paso, in terms on how "authentic" mexican it is. However, they do offer a varied menu with plenty of healthy and tasty options. Lastly time we were there they were offering a peach cobbler. If they still do, try it. It's amazing. Then comes the patio, if you don't care for the food, then go just to have a drink, good conversation and relax at the patio. Their large area makes it a great place to dine out with small kids. Don't go. They were not busy so none of this makes sense. Our waitress had a bad attitude. Was cryptic about answering questions about the food leaving out the real details. She strangely walked in to the back of my chair despite all the openness surrounding me. It was a nice warm Sunday mid-day so we sat on the patio. Waitress couldn't be bothered to do coffee refills, instead brought the little bottles they use for hot water for tea. This made the coffee was cold by the time it was brought to the table. We came to Mesilla to go to La Posta but decided to skip the 45 minute wait by coming here and trying something new. The wait for the menu, then the food, then the check was probably longer than we would have spent at La Posta. The food was great but you should definitely prepare to be here for at least an hour and a half. read more

I went back after a year of being away, and I'm happy to report that there's no fake cheese anymore and the bacon was okay. Looks like things have improved. This is Josefina's Old Gate Inn & Cafe. The innkeepers native Mesillians and their inn and cafe has been in their family for generations. Their attention to detail is everywhere you look. We often spend a week in the Las Cruces/Mesilla area taking in the sites. Recently we went to Josefina's for the first time and loved it. The atmosphere, food and music was great. The service was personable and the entertainment was wonderful. My wife had the avocado and tuna plate and I had the avocado and chicken. We also shared the squash quesadilla (major yum). The wine we had was also delicious. We went back the next day and ordered the same thing again. One day we were entertained by a husband and wife duet singing Spanish songs while playing guitars. The next day was a solo singer/guitar player by the name of Ty. They all were great. We now consider ourselves regulars even though we live in California. Don't miss this place!! read more
