Torn seats in Lucy' Cafe. Not a thrilling place to dine. How can you let your restaurant go like this? Duct tape only goes so far.

I had not been to Lucy's Cafe on South Valley since they opened a few years ago, but today I stopped in for breakfast. The interior of the restaurant is much the same as it was when the previous owner was there. There is a long counter and two rows of padded booths. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior does not exactly sparkle...it has not been well maintained and there were many cuts and patch jobs on the seats of the booths.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] (see photo below to look at torn booth covers) [[HIGHLIGHT]]This restaurant does not lend itself to a comfortable dining experience; some may think it somewhat depressing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Rate the ambiance on the lower side.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When I entered a woman told me to sit wherever I wanted. She was handling the front of the house all by herself. She quickly brought a menu to my table and took my drink order. (She never did give me a straw nor did she ever follow-up after finally getting the correct breakfast to me.) This waitress was quite friendly (as others have pointed out) but not everyone will go for all the touchy-feely stuff she was passing out! Today I ordered the Spanish Omelet breakfast which came with hash browns and a biscuit. After about twelve minutes of ordering the waitress dropped off a plate with some little packets of butter and jam. But wait! IT WAS NOT "MY" PLATE! Instead of a biscuit there was toast on the plate. It had several large strips of bacon, but just one fried egg and no Spanish Omelet. I GOT UP TO HUNT DOWN THE WAITRESS AND POINT OUT TO HER THAT SHE GAVE ME SOMEONE ELSE'S PLATE. When I located her behind the counter she was walking around with my Spanish Omelet plate...heading where was anybody's guess. After notifying her of the mistake she carried my Omelet to my table and swapped out the other meal. But, in the process she took away the knife and fork and left me to eat with my fingers. I once again had to hunt her down to tell her I needed a fork. Regarding the food: the biscuit was a bit dry and lacking flavor. It was mediocre at best. Rate it a "C." The hash browns were undercooked and certainly not brown or crispy. They lacked seasoning. Rate the hash browns a "C-" or maybe a "D." Not good. The omelet itself was not bad but the onion, ham, and jalapeno peppers inside were diced so small that one could hardly see them let alone taste them. The eggs themselves were done fairly well. The white cheesy sauce over the omelet was ok but not as good as reviewers would have you believe. I would rate the omelet between a "B" and a "B+." The white sauce I would say was a "B-." After finishing my meal I cashed out up front where the waitress never bothered to ask me how everything was. It's the little things like that that make a difference. How do they expect to know where they are not measuring up to standard??? All in all, this breakfast at Lucy's Cafe (for the complete dining experience) rates about THREE STARS...below the norm for a full serve restaurant. All the regulars...many the older types...seem to like it, but if you dine here do not expect too much. As far as the service the waitress would be better off emphasizing efficiency and professionalism while cutting back on the touchy-feely personal stuff.

Our favorite breakfast place in town. You can get amazing pancakes, anything with green chile, chorizo with eggs, posole, Lucy's burrito (get this anytime with the white sauce), actual basted eggs, burgers (big appetite? Get the Guapo), patty melts, menudo, chicken fried steak and eggs, pecan pie and almost anything you'd find at any diner worth its salt in New Mexico. Sit at the Counter and enjoy the show from an experienced, hard working and funny waitstaff. I will admit the kitchen can be slow at times and you may have a couple cups of coffee before your plate comes out. We loved the Zia - and are thrilled Lucy has taken over. It's super clean now and filled with good food, families and conversation.

Great service and the "red beef" is delicious. The red chile is the best I've had since moving to Cruces.

My friend had their Home-style Breakfast. I had their Mushroom Swiss Crepes. My crepes were the best I ever had loaded with mushrooms and Swiss cheese in an out of this world wine sauce. Both of us had their regular coffee. My friend took several pastries home and he told me later that were great. Our server was Victoria who explained in detail the menu to us. She is very pleasant and courteous and kept our coffee mugs filled up during our breakfast. She mentioned that she loves working at Indulgence which shows in her overall personality. The decor is so corky and unique. A gem with vegan and vegetarian options. The place reflects the love from the two ladies who own and run the place, one up front and one in the kitchen. I plan to go back with my wife and recommend it.

My wife ordered a chicken gyros and I ordered the Baba Ghanoush sandwich on a Greek pita prepared with lettuce, tomato, cucumber and Kalamata olives. My wife and I have been there before a few times and we figured our son who is a foodie would like it. The server was outstanding but I don't recall her name. However, the way this information was communicated made us feel unwelcome. The hostess's response came across as dismissive and sarcastic when she asked, "You want to wait 30 minutes?!?" after we had already agreed. We were then met with continued frustration and a lack of hospitality while trying to simply be patient customers. We ultimately decided to leave because the interaction made us feel like our business was not wanted. I understand that restaurants get busy and delays happen, but a little professionalism and a welcoming attitude go a long way. The issue was not the wait time -- it was the way we were treated.

We had actually tried out a new place, and were gravely disappointed. Two words, "fake" "meat". So, yeah, with the nastiness of the previous place leaving us yearning for a good burger (other than those from home!), we were in the area after a long day of sports nearby, and decided to grab a couple of burgers. Again, it's not fast food. There were some disappointments, but not deal breakers... 1) The burger patty on my burger was about 2" x 3" It was pretty d TINY!! But...at least it was real meat, lol!! And THAT is what we went there for. The bun? These are homemade and usually very good. The top bun on my burger was hard as a rock. It was either stale to begin with, or microwaved after it was toasted. Not too much of a deal cus I'm low carb anyway, though I had planned on breaking my diet for what I already knew would be a tasty house made bun. So, I wasn't too put off, by having an inedible bun. As it was, the under bun was perfect, and toasted with garlic.... and I DID break my diet for this, which I ate by itself. This bread is tdf! So there's that! Since I planned on breaking my diet anyway, I went ahead and order fries. The fries were not greasy like they used to be years ago. But they didn't seem fresh either, like they were years ago. Not soggy, not bad. I'll let it pass. We don't like seasonings on our fries so we got them "naked", and they were actually pretty good that way. No salt, nothing (though I did, later on pour on some gooey cheese for some nice cheese fries). The burger itself was good. I got the mushroom swiss burger. I'm not so sure that the white goo on my burger was swiss though. I've never seen swiss melt into almost nothing like that before. Perhaps it was grated? Still, never seen gooey almost liquid swiss before. I think it was either "swiss cheese product" (white american cheese), or provolone or something. Would have been nice, like tdf if it had been real swiss cheese. The grilled onions, fresh meat, fresh bottom bun (lol) made this burger. Also, again, I appreciate that they put garnishments on the side. I just ate them straight up, including the giant leaf of lettuce. A good overall meal. So even if Voodoo disappoints in some areas, there's always a treasure somewhere, and it was an enjoyable meal. Take away from this... wish the buns weren't stale or microwaved. Wish the burger patty was a decent size, not slider sized. Wish the swiss cheese was real swiss cheese. Not even gonna say I wish prices were lower, that's a given. My burger with fries was over $15.
