We heard Josefina's gate was the most photographed gate before social media took off and had to check it out. While taking photos of the gate, we met the nicest gentleman who turned out to be the owner of Josefina's. We learned (according to Randy, the owner) before California wine country even existed, New Mexico wine had already a strong foothold in the region. Who knew! We also learned that you can rent a room at josefinas (we checked the hotel portion out and totally fell in love with the charm. Will def stay here if we ever come through again). Onto the food! We had the Posole soup and tacos. The food was really fresh and light, which I appreciate after days of super heavy mexican meals. The highlight though for me was the salsa. There is so much to say.... Sorry no pictures of food, we ate it all..without stopping for any length of time. We both had the huevos rancheros red sauce and potatoes. You have a choice of beans or potatoes with your brunch. The potatoes were perfect with a slight crisp. The red sauce was delicious heat. Not too hot yet you knew it was there. The new owners (who also own Fresh Chile Company and Rio Grande Winery) have taken Josephina's to a whole new level. Still the best posole in town, still fresh made dishes and now Ice Box beers and a wine tasting room!! It would be the perfect place for a family gathering, corporate event or big group of friends to enjoy the afternoon. The patio here is mostly covered and lovely (heaters for a cool night). And yes, NIGHT. The new owners have extended the hours into the evening so you can enjoy the beautiful Mesilla plaza and then a bite to eat and a glass of wine. This place was good before but seriously, Randy and his family and crew have made this a GO TO place in Mesilla. It's a beautiful location and a friendly wait staff and the food is just wonderful. (Even though their burgers are not my fav in town). But since I discovered how GREAT it is, I get the posole anyway...so, it's all good. Visited on a Saturday at noon and it was extremely hot out. They have a lovely patio with a fair amount of shade; you can't completely outrun 100+ this but it's not terrible considering the weather. It would be absolutely perfect at 80 degrees but hey, they can't control the weather. We had to go inside to the counter to order, and they brought the food out to our table when it was ready. They worked with me on substitutions, which was nice. I had a bowl with potatoes, bacon, cheese, chile, and black beans instead of eggs. It was great! We stayed outside but there was a bit of seating indoors as well. There was a musician playing on the patio when I arrived, she was just wrapping up so I'd guess if you went earlier, you might catch live music outside. Josefina's advertise breakfast served until 1:30. So, late one morning we all decided to go have breakfast. Got there about 1:10 and were promptly told that the "breakfast kitchen" was closed. Wait. What! When we pointed out that their sign said breakfast served until 1:30, the mantra "the breakfast kitchen is closed" was again repeated. So, if you go for breakfast, don't wait too long, cause you probably won't be served. read more

My wife and I came out for lunch and really enjoyed the patio. Great ambiance and lots of shaded seating. Our server Christina was friendly and recommended the flautas, my wife ordered the Chile rellenos. The rellenos were great but my flautas had very little chicken which I mentioned when Christina asked how our food was. Certainly wasn't looking for new flautas, or anything for that matter but they were very concerned about making up for the small discrepancy in my order. I was really impressed at how they responded, and how their manager came over to offer an apology. We've been here before and had great service, this is the first "mistake" but it prompted me to write this review because they were so cool in trying to make things right. Great Food and Lovely Patio! Food & Drinks The food was really good. We went for Brunch. Great Tacos. Delicious and full of flavors! Service Amazing service. When we arrived, we were quoted a 30 minute wait, which wasn't an issue for us as we were able to walk around for a bit. It ended up being only 20 minutes. The hostess was lovely and very accommodating. She was busy as the restaurant was full and many people were waiting for a table, but she was still professional and amazing. Great job! Our server was friendly and welcoming. She did a wonderful job. She took the time to ask us a few questions and was able to connect with us. She took great care of us without being overwhelming. I'm glad that I got to try this restaurant one time before they closed to the public. Now their website says they will only be catering to corporate events and events for special occasions. I was going to try the winery that owns the restaurant before but this business has lost my interest. Meh, underwhelming. There's all kinds of other great restaurants to visit anyway. "Under New Management" doesn't mean better management. We went there many times when it was under the old management. Not impressed with the service. It is almost self service. Like Whataburger, you pay, take your drink to your table, and then they bring your order. My wife and I had the salmon sandwich. It was very dry, I thought that I was going to choke! It came with a small amount of potato chips. With drinks and a sweet bread, it came to over $40.00. For that much, they could use waiters and give better service. We went here on a quiet Tuesday morning for some breakfast. The atmosphere was wonderful- a lovely patio, good music playing. We sat near the lawn and got tea and coffee, which came with milk, sugar, and honey to add if we wished. The Earl Grey tea was the best I'd ever tasted, so I asked the waiter where they sourced it from. He was kind enough to write down the name for me (The Metropolitan Tea Company) and even gave me a sample bag of tea leaves to take home. We split the Chilequiles plate with green chilies, which was flavorful and delicious. We got to watch the birds on the lawn and the whole experience was incredibly pleasant- polite and attentive staff. I would highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Inconsistency is the best word. My friends ordered a dish that was great (the quiche), mine was mediocre and small (so mediocre that I don't remember what it was). The tortillas were so tough we had to use a knife to cut them. The chicken on them looked like it came out of a can. Cheese was not even melted it was just a pile thrown on top. One my first visit here I had the red enchiladas with beans an rice. Pretty basic choice but it was so delicious. I love their red and their fresh whole beans taste like what you make at home. Our shady spot on the patio was perfect for a late lunch! No problem for us we knew this was a popular spot so we waited. Once we were seated we got a peek at the menu. No appetizers because those are only on the dinner menu ‍. So we ventured on. I ordered the tacos and my husband orders the enchiladas. Once we got our plates my tacos were cold like super cold. I did tell my waiter and he switched them. Consistancy in a restaurant is key. Yesterday hubby and I decided order Doordash from here. I had the veggie tacos which were outstanding! His rellenos not so much. We hate thick batter on ours and this was pretty much all batter with a small ratio of chile. We ordered again today (we're painting do kitchen is out of commission) and I was dying to have those tacos again. Today was a huge let-down. Beans in my tacos were dry, very few vegetables compared to yesterday-also sans was the cabbage and salsa. Rudest waitress in Cruces. Yelled at my guest from California for having a teacup poodle in her bag. Is that a service dog ? Did you read the sign out front, No dogs allowed! We were so embarrassed. Totally ignored her rant, and later a very nice server said it was fine. Yes, it was a service dog and didn't make a sound. As a regular visitor to Mesilla I have always looked forward to dining at Josephina's. A long time favorite for good food, great atmosphere . The pandemic interrupted our regular trips to New Mexico for several years. We returned this year and made a beeline to Josephina's only to discover that what was once there is gone! Apparently , due to the pandemic or other reasons I am not aware of it closed in 2021. It has reopened as The Bean, a local coffee shop. What you see here is all wrong now. None of the menu items shown here are available anymore. The hours of operation are also incorrect. It is only open for breakfast and lunch. They closed at 3 pm now. The lunch menu is your standard "Ladies Lunch" items. Chicken salad on a half an avocado ( the avocado wasn't ripe ) with a side salad. Chicken salad sandwiches and wraps, etc. I had the quesadilla which was very average.Not bad, not great. This morning i got the breakfast burrito. Which was also very average. It was suppose to have green chili sauce but I sure couldn't detect any. On the upside, it is still the same building with great patio for outdoor dining. It's a beautiful cozy restaurant in the heart of the historic Mesilla! Yes, with the amazing historical building , the restaurant lacks a unique menu. I did order the Chicken salad , which I would only recommend unlike my siblings who order the chicken quesadilla with no chicken and no green chile. For these prices, I would recommend somewhere else, that's actually worth eating and buying. Below is a photo of my sisters "wrap" that had one slice of turkey and more tortillas than anything else... no dressing nothing worthy of the $9 for sure! The service was slow and the waiter not having to refill our drinks, left the pitcher on our table and came only 3 times out of our whole stay here. He made us seem like we were a bother as a table of 5 and yet the restaurant was was less than empty. Also, as a waiter , they should be able to recommend options and maybe specials however we never received anything like that! We booked a reservation for Josefina's Inn/Old gate for October 8-11. The booking was through Expedia- VRBO. I received the initial confirmation from both expedia and VRBO. Then, no other communication at all. I thought something seemed a little weird. My sister and I travelled to Mesilla on October 8 from Dallas, TX. I called the listed phone contact number of the host to let them know we would be arriving around 7 pm. No answer. I left a message. No return call. No emails. No messages. Nothing!! We arrive to the B&B. All the lights are out. Everything is locked up tight. The gate in the back has a chain across it. Their web site says they are closed to the public. I try to call every number I have for the business. No answer. No return of phone messages. I reversed the charges on my credit card, stayed in a different hotel. Then, a few weeks later the B&B reverts charges back to me!!! I have been fighting to get a refund ever since. VRBO and Expedia refuse. They say I have to get a refund from the hotel, WHICH IS CLOSED! BEWARE!! This location is still listed as taking reservations. DON'T BOOK IT!! It's a fraud. Legal action is next!! read more

Had heard about Josefina's on the net, so suggested it for lunch with some new friends after church. Take this tip: do not try to eat here right after Mass at the Basilica lets out. C R O W D. So maybe that's why it took 45 minutes to get served? I ordered one of my faves - grilled cheese. Can't go wrong, right? Wrong. Ordinary white bread w/ 2 slices of barely melted processed cheese (!), bacon, guacamole, and the only redeeming feature - green chili sauce. Came with either potato salad, chips or pasta salad. Cole slaw would have cost extra. Not a good choice overall. Spouse's chicken flautas were a bit burned and neither the rice or the beans got more than a 2. Yuk! Weather was fine and yes, the patio is lovely. We sat inside because the volume of the live music made conversation impossible. Will we return? I hope not. read more

I was really excited to try this place. I saw ads on Instagram and it looked good. First of all, the ambience and outdoor patio were wonderful, it was a beautiful setting. The lady who sat us was also very wonderful. However, the poor waitress was overwhelmed and it resulted in substandard service. After we ordered, the food took at least 45 minutes to get out to us. The waitress claimed it was fresh but it looked and tasted like it had been sitting out for a very long time all of the food was cold. The Chile rellenos were dry, crusty, and cold and drenched in oil as if they had been sitting in it for a while. My wife's taco was saturated in oil and cold. When I brought it to the waitresses attention, she said she'd have the food MICROWAVED. When she returned my food was still cold and the quality was even worse. Everything was soggy and the tortillas were hard. The beans and rice were also crusty and looked like they had been sitting out when it was served to us. My daughters got a hamburger which was dry as a bone. It was all so disappointing. I was so excited to try this place and the food looked so good on the ads but it was such a disappointment. The waitress was working so hard and doing the best she could but considering the lack of staff it made for a really bad experience which, again, was not her fault. I wanted a refund on the food but the gentleman I spoke with said the manager was busy and he or she never came to talk to us about our experience. If you want good Mexican food try La Posta, Hacienda, Andele's, or Double Eagle. All have great ambience, drinks, service, and their food is sooooo much better! Disappointing because Josefina's is in such a great location, I would love to frequent it more but will likely not be back. Everyone else in my party enjoyed their meal more than I did. My friends both loved the pulled-pork special (one had red sauce and the other had green) and my husband liked his pastrami sandwich, and probably would have given the food more stars. (I tasted the pastrami and it was not bad.) I chose the spinach quiche because my stomach was feeling a little tender. This quiche, I believe, was conceived with the best intentions, but suffered in 2 ways: the crust, which should have been flaky, had a sort of heavy, reheated texture that made the thickest parts difficult to eat; and it was COMPLETELY UNSEASONED. I don't care for a lot of salt, but eggs need *some* salt and these didn't appear to have any. I had to sliced the quiche into slabs and sprinkle salt and pepper on to make it palatable. The spinach could have been a bit fresher, I think, too. But at least it contained spinach, unlike the last quiche I ordered in a cafe. The little bits of sun dried tomatoes were a nice touch but there weren't enough to really change the flavor. It was edible. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't good. We almost passed Josefina's up because they had the world's worst cover musician screeching his lungs out on the back patio. He was very, very bad. We didn't decide to sit down until we found a place inside where we couldn't hear him at all. read more

Went here a few weeks ago for brunch with friends. Ordered my meal specifically without ham, and extra bacon. The server brought me a meal with all ham and no bacon. Instead of re-making my meal, as most places would INSIST upon, this server brought me a SIDE of bacon and then when she brought it, she announced ceremoniously that she wasn't going to charge me for the bacon. Wtf?! Really. Wow, thanks, you're not going to charge me for something you should've brought me in the first place? Are you going to sit here and pick out the ham from my original meal too? I think it would've been akin to something good if not for that. Everything else is standard (overpriced) breakfast fare. Why anyone would come here when there are places like the Shed, I'll never know. Or even Bite of Belgium! I'll give it another chance, though, because friends seem to like it...hope to improve my rating next time. Not sure why this place is listed as a "winery" because it's not.
