We dined here on a day when it was not busy at all, so we had very good service and food that was cooked just right and definitely fresh and the correct temperature. All of the food was excellent and the cocktails that we ordered were, as well. They were even able to make a special dessert (not on the menu) that I had requested when I booked my reservation only a few days earlier. Came in for Sunday brunch and walked away completely satisfied. Was greeted immediately by a kind gentleman at the host stand and he sat us down and were greeted with water. Outstanding potential. Singularly impressive wine list. Attentive wait staff. Food was purely average. Rib steak was exceptionally poor quality meat, no taste and plenty of gristle. Flavors across the board were complex but very (too) understated. Doubtless there are some truly "standout" menu selections, however, if a simple rib steak can't hit the table with some culinary enchantment. . . . who knows? I have dined here on multiple times over the past several years usually at least annually on special occasions. Most recently, a group on six dined there last night so this reviews focus is on that experience. On the positive side: 1) The service and wait staff are very good. They are attentive and observant while also allowing the table to carry on a conversation without unnecessary interruptions. 2) The menu has been simplified containing fewer selections compared to prior visits. I frankly like this approach as the variety of what is being offered is sufficient but it allows the chef and staff to concentrate on doing a few dishes well. 3) The orders from our table ranged from halibut to ribeye for main course and salad to soup for preliminaries. The potato soup was extraordinary in presentation and flavor. The ribeye and halibut were well prepared and the flavor was a perfect match to expectation of excellence we have come to expect from Jory . On the less positive side of things: 1) We ordered appetizers while waiting for a couple of our group to complete spa appointments. The cheese tray was had good flavor but is way too small relative to the price. Two of us shared the tray and somehow I think the tray was not prepared properly given a price of $18. Literally a half an Apple, a few walnuts and two small wedges of cheese? 2) We brought a couple of special bottles of wine with us to share and I was very disappointed that the corkage fee is $25 per bottle. I certainly understand the fee but the amount is simply too high given the size of our total bill of $500 not including the spa etcetera. In conclusion, the food and service are excellent with the exceptions noted above. The corkage fee is to high relative to my experience elsewhere given the restaurant location in wine country. We missed formal lunch service, so we dined in the bar area. Their take on a meat bruschetta with melted cheese on top is a great choice! We also enjoyed the flatbread with asparagus and bacon. We made a same day reservation for two while heading out wine tasting. Arrived in time and were asked to take a seat for a minute. Watched several groups come in and get seated right away (some with and others without reservations). After a bit I approached again to ask if there was a problem. They realized that they had forgotten us and quickly seated us. Water came in 5 minutes but never got a drink menu. Finally another 10-15 minutes our server came over to ask if her "assistant" took a drink order yet. I told her that we never got menus for drinks. Ended up leaving after 30 minutes of all of this and found a place in town for lunch. Don't waste your time at Jory- overpriced and horrible service all around. read more

Beautiful place, fabulous food and wonderful service. My only complaint is the parking. If you don't want to use the valet parking, you drive by all kinds of parking reserved for electric/hybrid cars (ridiculous number of spaces - many empty), then carpool spaces, and employee spaces. If you're just an average Joe in a normal car, you park way in the back and feel rather snubbed. :( read more

It was a let down. We had heard so much about the restaurant we thought we would give it a try. The service in the bar-outside patio area was slow. Even though the restaurant was nearly empty on an early Saturday evening, we waited 20 minutes passed our reservation time to be seated. The server for dinner was very pleasant, and made sure to note the food allergies in our party, assuring us that all would be taken care of. This was wonderful. The dinner itself was just OK. I was hoping for a really lovely meal, and what we received was an adequate one. The location is pretty enough for now, but eventually will be surrounded by buildings, as it sits just beyond the urban growth boundary. The amount of time it took to order drinks, dinner, and have our wine poured during dinner was disappointing. After dining at The Painted Lady the evening before the two restaurants certainly have their differences. Excellent food, creatively presented in absolutely spectacular surroundings. Recommended during a visit to a local winery this was a superb spot for lunch. Salads were fresh and tasteful but the lunch highlight was the halibut sandwich. Great breads, thoughtful service and all at a reasonable price. Highly recommended. read more

Not sure if we got an off night but for its reputation and price they should be consistent. They should make it easier to see a menu online since you have to make reservations days in advance. When we got there we were able to get a seat at the kitchen bar which was our choice. It was great to watch them make dinner and to periodically chat with the chefs. The menus was very heavily slanted to seafood. Beef was only on the bar menu as steak frites. My wife is pretty picky with food so we were there to try it for me since I am the foodie. There were things I wish I tried instead. However, the steak frites were not good. The steak was very under cooked. The meat itself was the fattiest piece of budget steak I have ever been given. The sauce was bland. The fries were your basic fries. The truffle Mac and cheese was very good. The Martinis my wife had were delicious and priced as expected for this kind of place. I had a local beer that they charge a 300% up charge on. $18 for a beer? Overall, I won't be returning. The 3 stars is for the ambience which is not worth the cost unless the food is better. read more

While staying at the Allison, a trendy new hotel/spa in Oregon's wine country, we had both breakfast and lunch at Jory (the exclusive dining option onsite and the only non-strip mall/ fast food option within many miles). Breakfast service and food was good, including excellent pastries. But lunch was a dissappointment. We arrived at 1 and were told we'd have to wait -- despite many unoccupied tables. The menu was limited and service was slow -- our two plates, a burger and a roasted vegi sandwich, finally arrived at almost 2 pm. The entire burger plate had been sitting awhile: cold bun, limp fries. The vegi sandwich was dominated by strongly balsamic-infused zucchini which was more odd than tasty. The sourdough bread was grilled perfectly, but the sandwich was small. Also on the plate was a simple, very fresh lettuce salad, but that still didn't add up to a value at $16. All in all, you get the impression they're resting on laurels of their elegant surroundings: but they'll never become a dining destination with such spotty performance. read more

If you don't want to pay $350 per night to experience the Allison Inn, just get cleaned up and come for lunch at the Jory. It's like a mini-vacation for less than $40 for two! Sublime food, excellent yet casual service and ambience. Our dining experience here was fantastic. The dining room is so much nicer and larger than it appears on the restaurant's website. The seating is comfortable and the views wonderful. The food is interesting without being odd and much of it is local to the northwest if not the area. There are fresh herbs and veggies when available from their own garden. I enjoyed a 4 pinot noir flight with the pork belly appetizer and an entree size portion of uni risotto. What a spectacular way to taste local wines and compare different labels while tasting how they pair with food. My spouse had the potato gnocchi and the black cod and is still talking about the cod. The food itself was delicious and the service was attentive, informative and personal. No, "hello my name is Bob and I'll be your server", but any staff who happened by the table paid attention to what might be needed at the table and attended to it. The resort itself is beautiful and modern; spectacularly positioned on a hill overlooking Newberg and the valley. We were so taken with the restaurant and lounge that we returned the following evening for after dinner drinks where we sat outside around a glowing fire pit and were treated attentively despite a function on the lawn below us. We definitely recommend this restaurant and it's bar to anyone visiting the Willamette Valley. BTW, the photos I've seen on this site do not do the food justice. Go and see it firsthand. read more

We were with a group of 16 Burgundy wine lovers and foodies (members of the Chevaliers du Tastevin) for a six -course wine-pairing dinner during a tour of the Willamette Valley of Oregon in search of new discoveries. Jory scored high marks on every dish for this well-traveled and knowledgeable group, plus drew high praise for the total dining experience (a rarity). To whet appetites everywhere, the menu from super chef Sunny Jim included: the Amuse (seafood tasting with dungeness crab, northwest oysters, house smoked king salmon); a rich but not thick celeriac soup; potato gnocchi (we could have stopped here the portions were so generous); Alaskan halibut (white beans, morcilla, calabrian chili ver jus reduction) or grilled wagyu strip loin (perfectly prepared huge portion - half a cow according to some -- served with a twice-baked russet potato that was delicious); and choice of three desserts. Wines from Soter, Matello, Shea Cellars, Patricia Green, Winderlea and dessert wines (Troon Port, Brooks late harvest Riesling). The wine star, at least with the beef, the Winderlea 2009 Dundee Hills 2009 Pinot Noir (intense Pinot Noir nose; big, ripe fruit on the palate and needs time). The evening was well-orchestrated by Ron Acierto and the service skilled and smooth, without being obtrusive. Plus the setting is memorable. The group gave a standing ovation to the chef and staff in the form of a traditional Chevaliers whimsical salute (called the "la-la" in English). As a side note, they even do breakfast well at Jory and you can add the Allison to your bucket list of wine country five-star resorts to visit. read more

We spent New Year's Eve at Jory and while we have enjoyed other meals there, tonight we wasted our time and money. Never again. The food was prepared in an assembly line fashion without consideration for customers. By the time the food arrived it was cold. My company recently held our Christmas party there. Glad I didn't pay for it. Great set up. Silverware, plates, napkins, all correct. The salad. Looked like the clippings from the mower attachment. It had clumps of some bitter cheese stuff in it. No lettuce, no dressing. The apple slices were good though. I ate those. Next, the main course. I think it was chicken. After the second bite, the third was going to be raw, so I quit. It was surrounded by some pureed orange stuff that had no flavor, so no one was sure what it was. Some thought it might have been sweet potatoes. I was thinking grits with food coloring. OK, skip that. There were two Brussels sprouts cut in half next to that. Those were good. And cooked properly! Next came dessert. It was a yellowish cube sitting on some swirls of some chocolate syrup stuff. A few at my table tried it. No one knew what it really was. A cheese cake with too much cream? Only one person at our 8 person table ate it. Mind you, this was after the first 2 courses. I watched as the wait staff collected the plates. There was a whole lot of un -eaten food leaving the place. Considering the comments and conversations with other folks there, we probably won't be going back. We'll probably go back to the elks club. This was our first time at the Allison and during 46 hours we had six different interactions with the staff at Jory including 5 times purchasing food. Good friends love (loved) the hotel and restaurant but are embarrassed and apologetic now. As a general rule, everything to do with the restaurant moves in slow motion. There is no such thing as immediate service. When you are seated, expect 5 to 10 minutes with no service or other communication from those in the vicinity. In addition, assume that if you are being waited on, this may be your last interaction for 10 to 30 minutes so make all requests. Food comes out on a schedule I never understood: it could be 30 minutes, it could be an hour. Also of interest is the four step process for clearing and resetting a table. We requested a particular table so we would be visible to our friends joining and also so it would be an easy walk for my wife: it was not to be as it still wasn't reset when our friends arrived after 15 minutes. The timing was typical. I won't talk about cost. This place is expensive but not unreasonably so. Bar drinks and food, first afternoon: our best dining experience. Our waitress had few customers and was quite attentive. Food came along in about a half hour and was quite good. Dinner, first day: this was an excellent meal. Our waiter and his assistant took their time, of course, and from pouring of water to first drink order was over 15 minutes. The martini was very good and the wine (delivered by the sommelier) also good. The food was great: you pay a high price and get high quality. Dinner took over 2 hours. Breakfast day 2 was a disaster. The restaurant was busy. Our waitress did not know the menu and did not check on things we asked about such as pastry selection. Food was delivered about 90 minutes after we were seated. The butter and jam were insufficient but waitress disappeared after serving us and toast was cold by the time she returned. Friends called it worst service ever in their several stays. Bar second afternoon: we asked if food and drink could be delivered to the downstairs patio outside of pool. We were required to order then to return later to pick up and take downstairs. Our friends were sure at one time there was service on the patio. Once on patio, service items were there for the duration. Nobody seemed responsible for pickup. Bar second evening: I wanted a glass of wine and a pleasant young lady took my order and delivered the wine. There was no light but I had a light on my keychain so could see to sign. Breakfast day 3: better service, waitress knew menu which is when we realized previous breakfast waitress didn't, food came in 30 minutes, drinks refreshed, still took more than an hour including long absences by all staff and our waitress going off duty without our being told. Food was always good but this isn't a great place to eat and drink. read more
