We got there at 3:30 put in our order we one of the first people in there. Waitress brought us our appetizers refilled our drink all in the first 15 minutes and than forget us. I tried to get a waitress but no one else came. I finally got our waitress his attention after she bought out another table food. I had 2 young kids with me and it has been 1 hours since we have ordered. She finally came back from the kitchen and said our order was given to a very large party that had came in after us and it be 20 more minutes. I asked for my check they said they could pack up my food at that point. I was not waiting I had two very hungry little kids. My first yelp review ever, I don't really ever care or feel inclined to do this BUT this is necessary. Absolutely terrible service, staff were rude and negligent to our party. We waited 40 minutes for our table then another 90 minutes for food before just giving up and leaving without a meal, our server couldn't have cared less. We arrived in Kill Devil Hills for vacation on Friday and decided to stop in under recommendation from a friend, and also because it was listed on BringFido as dog-friendly. I had a bacon cheeseburger and a margarita. My burger was pretty tasty - and the margarita grew on me after a few sips. I didn't realize it would be a premade bottle mix when I ordered, so that was a little disappointing. My husband enjoyed his shrimp and crab Norfolk. Someone did bring our food we had to order downstairs at the bar, but be aware that nobody comes to really check in on guests if you choose to eat upstairs. The disappointing factor was the flies. The night of March 18th around 11pm the "Karaoke bouncer" repeatedly threw my husband to the ground unprovoked. My husband has a broken jaw, broken finger and a broken ankle. My burger was good. I came for karaoke, and there was a period of about 30 minutes when the KJ played music without a single karaoke singer. I got one song in (the second song of the night) and there were two others who sang twice after I did my one song. I will never come here again. After the restaurant has closed and the bar is still open, the front doors are blocked off, leaving only one back exit, where people congregate just outside the door to smoke. I had the lunchtime seafood platter and though it was fried seafood, the fried scallops were so tasty. Nice big shrimp too and a good sized piece of fish. My waitress was very nice, however the waitress that sat me kept suggesting a table in the hallway, then this booth in a corner with a tiny exit from it. I saw a smaller booth near n asked if I could sit there and she it looked like she made a fuss with the person who'd be my waitress. I felt like telling my waitress that just because I am siting alone, doesn't mean you have to hide me at one of the undesirable tables. Not very fun and I'm a good tipper. We had Meyra, she was a delight. However the atmosphere isn't terrible. But there's a strong smelling air freshener that sprayed every few seconds, not appealing. Meyra was fantastic! We dined here twice while we were in town, once for dinner and once for brunch. It was crowded around dinner time, but they did have a bar where you could get a drink while you were waiting and you can enjoy it on their rooftop waiting area. For dinner I got the crab norfolk and a margarita to drink. Both delicious. For brunch I got the crab benedict and enjoy a huge mimosa with it. If you like mimosas, I highly recommend getting a mimosa with brunch. The decor is pirate/ocean themed, as expected and it was a delight to see. Everyone there was nice and service was fairly quick despite the crowds. I would recommend coming here for brunch, dinner's great too, but I loved their brunch options. read more

Been here many times for breakfast but today we came for lunch for the first time and were not disappointed. My fish sandwich was not only a huge piece of flounder but fried to perfection and served on a buttered toasted roll. The fries are good but nothing exceptional. The she crab soup and grilled cheese was very good as was the shrimp basket with fries. The lasagna was a good sized portion for lunch or dinner and was homemade and tasty. Waitress was nice and apologized for the Flys. You could tell the area had not been cleaned in quite some time. My daughter ordered spaghetti with meatballs. The meatballs were raw in the middle. Pretty great experience! It had a really cool ambiance and we enjoyed the game room while we waited to be sat. The food was yummy (especially the pretzels with beer cheese). We got a pretty big portion of food for the price that was charged. Our server was really nice and took time out to check on us frequently and even took the time out to make small talk with us in his down time. Would give this place zero stars if possible. My friends and I stopped in for a drink and immediately the bartender told my friend his ID was not valid (he's 25 and had a real ID) based on their "scanning database" (an inaccurate app on an iPhone). The bartenders refused to give his ID back and called the cops. We stood outside in the cold and rain for 30 minutes for the cops so our friend could get his ID back and also verified. The cop of course verified the ID was real and the bartenders ran inside once they realized they had made a mistake and did not even face us to apologize. The bartenders at this establishment are a joke and clearly want any power they can get their grimy little hands on. If you are not a local that goes often, you're looked down on. I can't even give this establishment one star. While I am down here for a few days with my boyfriend and close friends we stopped in Jolly Rogers to have a quick drink. They scanned my boyfriends ID (who is 25 years old) and said that he didn't show up in their "database" they were using an app on an iPhone. They proceeded to call the police. After waiting in the rain for 30 minutes for the police to come to ensure we could get his ID back the officer showed up and the bartenders went inside immediately since they knew that we were correct. The officer was so confused as to why the authorities were even called and looked up my boyfriends name, license number and DOB in an actual reputable database. Please do not give your money to this establishment, this staff is on a power trip and seems to be to anyone that is not a local. There are a million other great places in the Outer Banks to eat that will not ruin your time for their own seemed to be enjoyment. read more

We were scoping out breakfast places for when Bro J & T join us in a week or so. Jolly Roger has the reputation for a good inexpensive breakfast. In fact, on weekdays you can get two eggs for $2. We went on Sunday and it cost a little more but we also had more food. Our breakfast was very good. So while this review is only for our breakfast, be aware this place has a large menu, including claiming to be the oldest Italian restaurant on the Outer Banks. So based on what we had in the morning, I'm guessing you won't go wrong at other times. We are not frequent eaters of American breakfast, so my rating is a bit of a surprise. I mean, what can a restaurant do to distinguish themselves or for that matter, screw it up? Well Almost Eleven in Nag's Head on the highway, screwed it up and as I predicted, they are closed. I don't think they lasted much more than a year. Ms T just had two eggs, over easy with grits and links. All was fine although, I would like some salt in my grits (Ms T wanted a little cheese). The toast was not sto bawt laht bread! Amazingly it was sliced from a European loaf. Her link sausages were excellent. Not medicinal with sage and with a little red chile heat. Nice. I like egg sandwiches and enjoyed a very nice one with the same very good bread. I had my eggs omelet style with a sausage pattie. I took half of this guy home. I also ordered a side of scrapple, crispy. The scrapple was also very good, not over herbed and not over livered. It really was a lot like Mom used to make at home in Iowa. I was really expecting a food factory. A large place with screaming kids and mass-appeal food and no redeeming characteristics. I was pleasantly surprised. Dined here on our 6th Anniversary (8/2/18)... Don't let the run down exterior with all sorts of mis-matched things fool you- this place has some really good food at reasonable prices. I was a bit apprehensive letting my parents take us here, since we were at the beach, and expecting seafood everyday (not them paying for it, of course) but when they asked if we would let them take us here, we said, "Why not?'. We were seated just off the bar area and Brandon was our waiter. Service started off a bit slow as our full party wasn't present and Brandon wanted to wait for them. We asked for a round of waters and some bread to munch on as we waited. He brought the waters rather quickly but the bread took a while (maybe the kitchen was busy). Finally everyone was present and this is where Brandon kicked it into gear. Round 1: Bevs- we ordered a few different types- Beer, Soda, Coffee, etc. and Brandon hustled these out to us, and kept them coming, all meal. Round 2: Apps- We ordered Cheese Garlic Bread and Calamari as appetizers (6 of us). The C-bread was really good (6 pieces) but the Calamari was exceptional! Panko breaded to just the perfect golden brown, grease was at the perfect temp so very little soaked in. We all agreed that it was probably the best Calamari we had eaten in years. Round 3: Entrees- We ordered all types. I had the Captains Platter which was Meatballs & Sausage with mozzarella over pasta (ask for extra sauce because the first scoop soaks in while it bakes). It was delicious and plentiful! My wife ordered Crabcakes and they were big, stuffed and with very little filler. Definitely worth the $. She ate one and a few fries and took the other one home. My brother ordered the Ribeye and loved it. My sis-in-law ordered the Shrimp Scampi and devoured it. My parents each ordered the Veal Parm and raved about it. All meals were delicious, plentiful and we left with smiles on our faces. Like I said earlier- the place is a bit 'odd', a bit run down, a bit eclectic, but the food is delicious, the owners are friendly and care about your experience (spoke to the wife on my way out), don't take it too serious (Don't expect Mortons' Steakhouse), and you won't be disappointed. They are very family friendly and offer inexpensive child-friendly meals such as "plain pasta" and "spaghetti noodles with cheese" for those picky eaters. The food in the Jolly Roger Restaurant was pretty good. The prices were very reasonable. HOWEVER, My wife and I went back at 9pm for the Karaoke, AND IT WAS AWFUL. The DJ allowed singers to perform such OFFENSIVE Songs - with four-letter curses throughout, that my wife and I left. I was excited to learn they do Karaoke every night and planned to go every night during our four day vacation.. I sang one song, and tried to suffer through listening to the vulgar lyrics of S--king, and F--king, and "N" words by other singers that we cut out after 15 minutes. The DJ also cursed and engaged in the crude banter with the guests. I love Karaoke. I've sung in places from Key West to Maine. My wife and I planned to spend a few hours in the bar, and probably would have spent $40-$50. But we couldn't sit there with our ears being pounded by four letter words. I also noticed a few other people leave. When we arrived, there was a table of eight people...but they left shortly before we did. Sadly, this was the only Karaoke we could find in town. read more

What a great place. The decor is very eclectic, but that was fine by us. It was entertaining to look at all the oddities and fun things on the walls. I am sure kids would love it. We had been to the other high end seafood restaurants in town, and we unfortunately only found Jolley Roger at the end of our trip, otherwise we would have gone there many nights instead of paying over double at the other places we went. I had the Captain's Platter which was Great! Our server Sheri was awesome, fun, and attentive. We could hear 80's rock trivia going on over at the bar, and it sounded like they were all having a great time. Jolly Roger is probably the best value for some of the best food in OBX! read more

We had not been in the Jolly Roger in years, mostly because the interior had been dated, shabby and, frankly, not clean. They recently added a new addition, so we thought we'd give it another try. It turns out they only built a larger bar, and the restaurant area itself is exactly the same. The service was slow, but to be fair, we only saw two waiters working and they were busy. The food came out lukewarm (the vegetables were actually room temperature) and the fried shrimp and fried oysters were under seasoned- overall just "ok". They would do well to reduce their menu choices and concentrate on providing quality entrees. Our meals for the two of us weren't exactly cheap, either- with one cup of soup and the aforementioned fried oysters and shrimp, plus two adult beverages each, the bill was over 90 bucks. I'd like to have been able to leave a good review, but we won't be coming back- our money would be better spent elsewhere. read more
