My dad gave the latter half of his life to living in the Philippines when he was sent over to build Skyway Phase 1--- Manila's main highway . Remember back in the mid 90s, visiting him in Makati from Taiwan, that was the first time I was introduced to Jollibee at the 2nd Floor of one of the Robinsons Mall. And I remembered my dad tell me, here in the Philippines Jollibee is the King, McDonalds never even comes close to the traffic...... And that's when I realized Filippinos love their Fried Chicken. But in my mind back then the king of Fried Chicken was Al Baik in Saudi Arabia. Having grown up by the Red Sea, Al Baik will forever be my top choice for Fried Chicken and I think many Filipino Ex-Pats whom worked in the Arabian peninsula would agree. Anyways, back to Jollibee. I was surprised after moving to the United States, they had a Jollibee. 'cept to be honest 30 years back it didnt taste anywhere close to the quality now. The menu no longer has its iconic YumBurger and they've opted for the more obnoxious Angus burgers...which doesn't do much really, you have Giants like Habit Burger and In-N-Out taking the burger crown. Wished CoVID never happened. We had so many projects lined up in the Philippines circa 2019-- Subic Bay LNG Ocean Transport, potential takeover of the Okada Resort Casino Manila, potentially bringing over of Kaoshiung Taiwan's refinery capacity.......China wouldn't have shut down, Philippines flights wouldn't have shut down. We'd have 5 Billion USD in capital funded through Hong Kong, we would have closed a deal with Jolibee's owners to run an independent franchise outside the control of corporate. We would have gotten all the Huawei contracts and installed Chinese 5G across the Philippines islands. Ya...COVID changed the trajectory of everything. I was there in Manila 2019, watching the high economic growth momentum in Bonafacio Global City and we wanted a piece of that action. Funny how one meal makes you flash back to all the what ifs. Last thoughts here, I will give Jollibee mad props for the Guava Freeze. At first I thought it was going to be sugar overdose, but then it was actually pretty good. Overpriced and no longer worth it! Price increases in $2-increments every year for 'buckets' faster than their drive-thru window. $18.99 for a 6-pc is INSANE and soon to be $20 if I check back in a few months. Not gonna suck it up. Jollibees doesn't offer weekday special deals to give back to the community in support like the others such as KFC and Popeye's - which I have started to patron more often. The menu items I haven't tried are their burgers and chicken sandwiches. I always tell myself I'll try it, but I end up getting my usual fried chicken and spaghetti. Occasionally, I might switch things up with adobo rice or palabok, but spaghetti is my fave. Ube pies and mango pies are so SO SO good! When this location opened in late 2021, I was pretty ecstatic as their nearest location to me was all the way in West Covina. Pretty happy that they finally have a location not too far away whenever I was craving Jollibee. The vibe here is pretty typical of any fast food establishment. My partner though has ran into some troubles of online orders being canceled for no apparent reason. This specific location is great. Never really had any problems with them on my occasional visits. Drive through is quick and staff is pretty quick and professional with order as well inside. There's also online ordering which is great to avoid any wait times. My partner and I both use the app whenever we order to gain rewards points. Highly recommend checking that out if you order often. My go to order here is the 2pc chickenjoy with a side of spaghetti combo, which comes with a drink, apple pie and a biscuit. The chicken here is very underrated in my opinion, super tasty, crunchy, and always full of flavor. The biggest issue was the management. The older lady wearing glasses, who appeared to be around 50-60 years old and seemed to be the supervisor or manager, was extremely rude. Instead of helping the employees during the rush, she seemed to slow everything down and was also disrespectful to her staff. The employees looked overwhelmed, stressed, and overworked, and it was obvious they needed more support, not criticism. The restaurant clearly needs better management and more staffing. A good manager should help the team and create a better experience for both employees and customers. On top of that, the glass tumbler promotion is overpriced. For what it costs, the quality of the chicken should be much better. Overall, I would never come back and would not recommend this location to anyone. The chicken sandwich meal deal was not advertised on the menu like it is in the West Covina location so I asked if it was available which it was. I got it for dine-in because fast food is best eaten fresh and hot. I got to work on the fries first but they were not properly heated. There was a mix of warm to cooled pieces. The chicken sandwich in original was next. It was properly heated and good as expected. Lastly was the mango pie which the filling is packed tight. It's hard to avoid the filling oozing out and dripping onto the tray when bitting into it. Not really an issue. Just have to take it slow with the pies. This location is a bit away from the main 10 freeway so I have to get through a lot of narrow surface streets to reach it. It's still the closest one to me from El Monte because the other locations next to the corporate office and Amar Rd in West Covina are twice the distance. It would be awesome if they opened one around South El Monte. read more
