We were craving for Hawaiian food a few days ago and decided to go to Ono Hawaiian BBQ, the one on Valley Blvd. in Alhambra on Sunday. The ambiance was okay, but it was kind of too simple and dull. We ordered two Spam musubi ($6.99 each for 2 pieces), a Hawaiian BBQ Chicken mini meal ($11.29), a Kalua Pork plate lunch ($13.99), and a Kalua Combo ($14.49). My daughters liked the spam musubi, and we got two orders for them, so they each had two big pieces. The Hawaiian BBQ Chicken mini meal wasn't too mini; the portion was great with flavorful BBQ chicken, 1 scoop of rice, 1 scoop of macaroni salad, and vegetables. For my Kalua Pork plate lunch (Hawaii's version of pulled pork), I liked my slow-roasted shredded pulled pork with a bit of smoky flavor. It was served over steamed cabbage. The cabbage was a bit chewy, though. I wish the cabbage could be softer; maybe steam it a bit longer. For the Kalua Combo, besides the Kalua pork, you can pick the second choice of BBQ Chicken, Chicken Katsu, or Teriyaki Chicken. Hubby picked the Chicken Katsu. The portion was big, and it had 2 scoops of rice, one scoop of macaroni salad, and steamed veggies. You can also customize to have the sides, such as 2 scoops of macaroni salad and one scoop of rice, and one scoop of steamed veggies. (Choose your sides up to 4 for the combo.) The staff was a bit impatient and kept saying "anything else" a few times after my hubby placed his order, but I hadn't ordered any other food for my daughters, my mom, and myself. I brought my mom as she has never been here before and she had the aloha plate of chicken katsu at $12.49 and I got the kalua pork plate at $13. The portion of meat, rice and salad is huge! This place is always the best when it comes to the perfect and delicious Teriyaki Chicken. Hands down to the staff for a great and incredible service. The ambiance here was nice and welcoming. Lots of people order the Hawaiian BBQ mix here, which comes with short ribs, beef, and chicken. It's low key a lot of different kind of meat for one person so it's preferable to share that dish. This Ono is in a plaza in Alhambra with a fairly big parking lot, which it shares with other restaurants like Panera Bread. Parking is convenient more or less. She didn't even say anything or apologize and just put the sign when I told her. Customer service at the front was okay (not much smiles as if they were exhausted). The spam musubi was delicious and the flavors were perfectly balanced. I'm always under the impression that the spam will be too salty but the rice in the musubi balanced it out. I liked the sauce they had in there too. It wasn't too wet/soft. The spam also had a nice crunch on the outside from their pan frying. It was hot and fresh. I like that the Hawaiian Sun drink isn't carbonated and not overly sweet tasting. The worker here offered teriyaki sauce on the side but I didn't take any. The spam musubi didn't need it at all because it already had the teriyaki sauce inside. This place caters and has multiple locations throughout California and Arizona.
