The fries size is so small now compared to the past. Both the bahn mis and fries were smothered in the pickled daikon radish and carrots to make the order look larger than it really is. I had a not-so-good experience last time I visited Joju (per my previous review), but It's been over 3 years so I gave it another try. We went in better prepared - making sure we ask for their loyalty card first, NOT after the fact!! 3 notable changes from what I remembered from 3 years ago: 1) Prices no longer included taxes. No comment on this one. 2) New volume promo -- buy 5 sandwiches get 1 bubble tea free. This can be in conjunction with the loyalty card points The promo worked because we did end up buying 1 more sandwich than we needed to get the free bubble tea.. 3) Each sandwich was cut in half and each half was packaged separately. We appreciate this because each sandwich is very filling, the second half is readily packed for next day's lunch! It also made it easy to mix it up and sample different sandwiches. We ordered 2 Lemongrass Chicken with Egg White; 1 Classic Banh Mi; 1 Vietnamese Caramel Pork; and 1 Kakuni Pork Belly. The egg white made no difference to the taste, nor texture. Maybe a running egg instead may work better next time. The caramel pork tasted good on the first bite but got old rather quickly because of the sugar. Pork belly and the classic Banh Mi were both excellent. The bread was nice and toasty. One minor negative: I did noticed that each sandwich was layered "vertically"; as a result, each "horizontal" bite would not get all the ingredient at once: one bite would only taste the meat, another would only taste the pickled carrot/daikon. No big deal. Overall, a much better experience and I am bumping up my rating to 4 stars. read more

Hands down the best banh mi I've ever had. But the best banh mi experience I've had as well. Never been a fan of the standard cold cut boring turkey lettuce tomato on wonder bread. But the banh mi ... shall never be compared to it. Toasted bread with delicious pickled veggies, some jalapeños and cilantro, and MEAAAAAT!! Unbeatable. And Joju goes above and beyond for it. I got the bibimbap banh mi and the joju banh mi, both with runny eggs and green bomb sauce (the sauce was the BOMB). The bibimbap banh mi had so much flavor from the meat and kimchi combo COMBINE with the delicious radishes... plus that green sauce... unbeatable.... you just have to take a moment to reflect after each bite. I also had the banh mi joju fries and the spring rolls. The banh mi fries have the pickled veggies some jalapeños and cilantro combined with some spicy sauces-- which I believe are the same as the green sauce? Delicious combination I would've never thought up! And the spring rolls come with a variety of sauces which also has the green sauce. Different than the average cha gio and a little lacking in flavor. That green sauce is the main attraction and will make me keep coming back. I am surprised that I have not reviewed this place yet. I have frequented this place for seven years. The sandwiches have always been great and though momentarily they did a separate bowl restaurant below, Joju is still producing quality food that brings joy to my heart. Once they reopened after the quarantine, I decided to revisit many of their sandwiches. And I do have to say there is nothing as comforting as one of their sandwiches. After trying their combinations, I decided to make my own. I wanted to have Korean food, but since I could not venture too far from the neighbourhood I decided to modify a Joju sandwich. I took their Bulgogi sandwich, replaced the daikon with kimchi, added sriracha, and added an egg. I would say it tastes somewhat like a philly cheese steak, but with all of the flavors of a bulgogi bimpbap. Not a bad sandwich. I remember when Joju had a lot more sandwich combinations on the menu. Hopefully, they are thinking of new ones. Maybe they can create a few versions where the daikon and carrots are not the star of the show. Use the kimchi or the cabbage from the bowl section. I am sure the owners still have playfulness in their hearts. The other day, I ordered a Joju Bowl. Despite my many failed attempts to like it in the past, it is not bad. Yes, there a plenty of over rice dished in this neighbourhood that are much cheaper, but again, it was the closest thing I could get to korean food near here. Though the sauce they use is too sweet, I fixed this with a bit of sriracha. I even got the onsen-tomago, it was soft and tasty. This is another thing that they can port to their sandwiches. The only problem with the dish is that they are using the same daikon and carrots from the sandwiches. It is too predictable and it becomes a bit of a flavor clash with the fried onions. How about scallions, mushrooms, beansprouts, or spinach? I can only dream. Anywho, if you have not tried this place yet, why are you still reading this review? Go ahead and order! You can order in-store or on ChowNow. And they are open until eight in the evening, so you can have them for dinner too. Below are some additional notes on their food. Eggroll - great! Fries - Always crispy. Use the chipotle mayo sauce, ketchup does not do these fries justice. Wings - One order only has two wings. I tried them plain, they were nice and crispy, but could have used more salt. The soy-garlic is good too, but I am not a fan. I would like to see more sauce options in the future. I really liked the bulgogi banh mi the last time I came here (a few years ago) but how and WHY have I been sleeping on the banh mi fries?! Crispy and crunchy fries under a bed of thinly sliced pickled carrots and white radish with a drizzle of their house sauce and spicy mayo mixed in. Carb heaven! No cilantro for me though (not a fan). This place is great! Clean insides and the food is SO GOOD! We started with the soy garlic chicken wings, crispy, sticky, perfect seasoning. We moved onto the loaded banh mi fries, the presentation is on point, fries, spicy enough mayo and jalapenos. As far as sandwiches go we got the classic, pork belly and joju monster. Tie for favorite is between the pork belly and the monster, in my eyes it's hard to compete with pork belly but the bbq pork really is holding their own. Each sandwich is really well put together, layered with flavor, enough heat. We did 'spicy' on all our sandwiches and when I go back I'll just stick to the mild or I'll try the green bomb. I'm not a fan of raw jalapenos and found myself picking them out. These sandwiches make me smile. They are super gut busters but they make me smile. They don't lack in flavor and never fail in filling your tummy. There isn't a sandwich I don't want to eat from JoJu, it's just I'm so sad I can't eat more than one at a time. I often try to partner up with a companion so I can split two sandwiches and get two tastes instead of one. Even though I like many of the sandwiches here I am attracted to the Kakuni Pork Belly sandwich and the double fried fries combo as my goto choice. A word of extreme caution, I can't stress enough that you must make sure that you allocate at least a good 10 minutes of un-compromised attention to your lunch/dinner. At least 10 minutes where you will not need to use your fingers for anything else because this is a messy sandwich/fry combo no matter what your favorite combo is. Don't try to multitask and check on messages, face time, type emails or take pictures of the sandwich during eating or you'll end up spending more time washing whatever you touch if you try. Before discovering Joju, my favorite spot to get a Bahn Mi was Bahn Mi Saigon in Chinatown. However, Joju's modern take on the Bahn Mi won me over. Their menu boasts an impressive array of different sandwiches, with caramel pork, chicken, bulgogi, and even vegetarian ham. All these options to customize and experiment with different twists on this Vietnamese staple ensure that nobody will walk out of Joju without a smile on their face. My boyfriend and I chose to share the Bomb Mi Sandwich and their specialty Kimchi fries. I'm so glad I trusted his advice because the sandwich was HUGE. I was barely able to finish my half because I couldn't stop eating the fries too. Thankfully, both are topped with a generous heaping of pickled daikon and carrots so it's somewhat healthy. My first bite of the sandwich delivered a mouthful of tender, juicy marinated beef and runny egg bursting with juices that also seep into the crisp of the baguette. With each subsequent bite of the sandwich, I grew to love it more until my belly begged me to stop. One might think that the addition of kimchi along with the pickled vegetables might tip the sandwich towards tasting overly sour, but I stand by my belief that kimchi makes almost everything better. As you near the end of the sandwich, you're left that large chunk of baguette that you neglected as you were devouring the meat of the sandwich, but this time, I was able to enjoy the baguette since it had been soaking in the oil from the beef. The fries were equally tasty. You won't find a single soggy one in there, unless you let them sit for too long bathing in the spicy mayo drizzle on top. My first taste of banh mi was at Joju in 2015 and it has been my favorite banh mi shop since. No other spot compares to everything that Joju brings to the table-- with their incredible variety and amazing flavors. They're pretty much always busy whenever I've been so be prepared to wait or call ahead. There's no indoor seating so prepare for takeout. The spot is also wheelchair accessible since its mostly a ramp, but the space between the door and the ramp is a bit cramped. They also have a joju stamp that I recommend grabbing because you will most likely return. On to food-- I had their Joju Banh Mi fries (5/5) which come with crispy fries topped with pickled radish and carrots with an amazing spicy mayo sauce on the side. The fries are very crispy but can get soggy fast if you wait to long. The crunchy and acidic radish and carrots are a perfect match to the oily fries. Their monster spring rolls (5/5) were so fun to eat because of how long and thin they were. It felt similar to eating a meat filled pocky stick, packed with flavor. The star of the meal was definitely the Kakuni Pork Banh Mi (5/5). The pork is incredibly tender with a fair ratio of meat to fat that melted in your mouth. The vegetables were amazingly fresh and a great balance to the salty and fatty pork. Jojus green sauce is also to die for, its creamy like an aioli but not as thick and very spicy. I am a HUGE fan of spice and it really sealed my Joju meal. Don't forget the fried egg, like me. I usually get the fried egg but I wasn't prepared for a messy meal so I went without.. and boy was I missing it. Don't be like me: get the egg. Overall the food is amazing, a must try, a winner. The only issue I noticed was that they're are so busy and their staff can't handle the load of customers. The person working the front had to take customers orders, pack orders, grab drinks and sauces, and also take orders over the phone. I called at 7PM an hour before closing and I was put on hold for 30 minutes and the. promptly hung up on. I was pretty upset because I was really wanting this sandwich, I still made the trek over and barely made it before closing and the line was insane. I do hope its better since I last visited.
