We set up an appointment for an arborist to come to look at our tree, but at the last minute they had vehicle problems and couldn't keep the appt. Normally not a problem but they assumed the phone number I called from was a cell phone number. It was a work number. I got off of work to meet them and they didn't show. With regret I leave this negative review. Like others here, I chose Johnson's Tree Service out of three other companies that had competitive quotes. Johnson's wasn't the cheapest, but Jeff came across as trustworthy. Also they ilocal and I like to promote local businesses when I can, so I went with them. I needed two trees removed and one large pine tree pruned. I also wanted a cord of the wood put away for my fireplace from these trees. They did a great job with the removal of the trees. It took one day to remove them and a second day to grind the stump. But this is all they did well. The pine was poorly pruned and the cord of wood was never provided. The pine was left with a substantial amount of cross branches and several cut branches were left hanging high above (a major potential hazard if they should come loose and hit someone or something below). I called Jeff to discuss these issues. He agreed to take care of my concerns after I paid him (again he seemed trustworthy). I did. He came back a week later to address the cross branches, but the loose branches are still hanging dangerously and the cord of wood is yet to be delivered. He has not replied to my messages. I have several oak trees that will need pruning this summer, a fact that I discussed with all tree service providers. I will not be using Johnson's and will not recommend them to anyone I know. Called up Johnson Tree Service and they came out to cut up a big eucalyptus tree at my house in Alhambra. The quote was $700, and they would quarter logs into usable pieces for firewood and grind the stump down. I wasn't in a rush to do it, so I told them they could come out when they had a slow day. Win-win, right? Wrong!!! They came out to cut the tree, and half way through they told me they needed more money to cut into firewood, and more money for the stump grinding as it was more work than they anticipated. They wanted another $500 for everything - a total of $1200. Well, they tried to scam me and I called BS. They left the job half done, as I refused to give them anymore than the contracted amount of $700. I told them to pack up their stuff and leave. They tried to scam me and I didnt pay them a nickle for what they already had done. Dumb on their part, but it was their fault. I ended hiring another local service and they finished the job without issue. Don't fall for their scam of a low quote for the job, as they will try to scam you and squeeze more out of you halfway through the job. I guess they care more about the "now" money than keeping customers for a long time and the referrals for new customers. STAY AWAY!!!! read more

Is a half star available? This company chopped down a Jacaranda and ended up damaging all nearby plant life in our yard. The "tree trimmers" seemed to care less about the condition of the lawn and were focused on finishing the job quickly. Jeff was also paid to remove the stump of the Jacaranda. Initially, the stump grinder seemed to finish off the stump, but below the chips and debris about six weeks of work awaited. My elderly father and I had to toil with digging, chopping, and lamenting over a job poorly done by a "professional." All the while, Jeff insisted he would grind the rest of the stump without further charge. Yet six to seven weeks passed and the excuses from him mounted. "The grinder is 'in the shop' and it needs desperate repair." Why bother with a "company" that won't finish the job or admit to a mistake? This company will probably respond with some fragment riddled, unintelligible retort. Be my guest. But, when you, the consumer, need to take matters of a supposedly paid job into your own hands, think of this warning. This warning is based on my personal experiences and is obviously subjective. Beware. This guy is dishonest and rude. Signed up for Chip Drop and Jeff Carlton, "Johnsons Tree Service" accepted my request. He even listed the drop as delivered. However, nothing was delivered. I called his phone, mail box full (bad sign to start). I sent an email asking if he was going to drop the mulch since he responded to the request saying the chips were dropped. Mybe he was just on his way or something. No, that wasn't the case. He finally responded that he decided not to do the delivery because it didn't meet my requirements (had Chinese Elm in it). I do appreciate that, at least he didnt just unload his garbage on front yard. But he never contacted me or the ChipDrop website to cancel the fact that he said the load was delivered. A "delivered" load puts me at the bottom of the list on that site as I have no received something even though I never actually did. When I asked that next time he not accept my request if he wasn't actually going to deliver, he responded rudely threatening to never give me free stuff. Nice guy. When I searched his name on Google, I found another tree company in Huntington Beach with his info. They immediately responded that this guy was no longer with their company. No surprise there. We live on a half-acre in Monrovia along side 14 oaks and 5 massive 60 year old pines. When we moved in, we just kept rehiring the tree trimmers that the precious owners had used for decades. Come to find out, he was a 'hacker'. (Our direct southern neighbors had also been using the same company.) Nor did they properly trim one of the worst leaning Aleppo pines in Monrovia - yes, on our lot. Because they hadn't trimmed back the heaviest branches reaching for the sun, the tree was in danger of falling on the two neighbors living south of us. I spent years trying to find a company/arborist that could actually deal with the tree instead of wait for it to fall or cut it down altogether. Johnson Tree Service happened to be in the neighborhood and I watched their work carefully. They didn't 'butcher' the oaks, had only shaped them, and most importantly, didn't remove more than 25% of the tree - which is proper oak trimming protocol. I invited Jeff to our property for a free quote. He recommended that we don't cut our oak trees but every 4 or 5 years. (The last company was chomping to get to them every year! And needless to say, because we let them, not knowing what was best, their 'hack-job' exposed our trees to fungus and parasites for which we had to find a specialist to treat 3 of them.) As for the worst, most worrisome, Aleppo Pine, Jeff offered to anchor it with a 60,000 lb cable. I thought, 'omg', you can do that? Let's do that! Let's extend the life of the tree for another couple decades AND at a fraction of the price compared to cutting it down altogether. Jeff, himself, did the work - please see attached photos. He cut some 1500lbs off the leaning side to balance the tree and then cabled it to another pine across the yard. Not only that, they didn't just let the enormous branches fall from 150ft up, they also cabled them down in smooth descent not damaging a single thing in our yard or the neighbor's yard from where the branches ultimately landed. He is indeed a true 'arborist' and not in the business of taking your money, rather, what is good for the trees. After a dozen companies on our property, I found his work ethic to be rare in this business. He is competitive, yet reasonable, and absolutely does a better job! Once my southern neighbors found out what a relief and great job he did, they now use him as well and refuse the let the 'ex-hacker' back onto their properties. Johnson Tree Service is now utilized by our several more neighbors on the block. And believe you me, we all get a little nervous when we here a chain saw start up! Now, we all trust in the Jeff's knowledge. Jeff and his team are professional, clean, respectful and listen to your concerns, yet very friendly and personable. Because I previously had a horrible experience with a tree service which is no longer listed on here, I was extra cautious when choosing an arborist. After being misled by the other company, I now always check to confirm that they are licensed and insured. I learned the hard way that an unlisted tree service will take off and disappear if they damage your property. Jeff at Johnson Tree Service was recommended by a trusted friend. We had a HUGE ash with multiple trunks that needed to be removed without causing any damage. The house is on one side, a fence of the other, and the phone line connects them right under the tree forming a small triangle. Jeff was right on time for the estimate and the first thing I noticed was that he was very trustworthy. He was friendly but also very specific about how to take the tree down without any side effects and clearly very knowledgable about how the tree was growing, where the internal stresses are and how the tree would fall. Jeff quoted a good price, but said he was swamped and wouldn't be able to take it down right away (in contrast to another arborist who was practically begging for work but didn't seem as trustworthy). I booked with Johnson Tree Service and the crew showed up early, and got to work climbing the tree and dropping the logs with pin-point precision. We called Johnson Tree Service in Monrovia to come out and give us a price for removal and were told a representative would arrive the following day between noon and 1:00 pm. No on ever showed nor called. The fact that two other service providers (in a very competitive industry) actually honored their appointment commitments and, after assessing our situation, both characterized it as "an emergency", underscores Johnson's failure. Used Johnsons tree service twice already. Becoming almost a yearly service as I keep thinning out my oak tree. Did an excellent job. Also trimmed many trees on my property and used him in my commercial residential property. No issues noted and passed city inspection. Best thing is the knowledge he gives me on every type of tree. Talking to Johnson is great as I get to also learn about the trees in my property and their characteristics. This company is very busy so I've had jobs pushed out, but the company always was able to tell me ahead of time and work with me on new timing. Jeff came by on a holiday as an emergency call fifteen minutes after I called. He gave me a written report as he is a certified arborist. Not just a guy with a crew- an education on trees. He told me the names of all of my neighbors horrible trees, went over the health of the trees and wrote us a great letter to protect ourselves for insurance on the trees that didn't fall. Three days later we had all 8 massive pine trees cut on one side of the property and the fallen tree dismantled along with a hedge of Carolina cherries that had been distorted. They were punctual, moved my kids swing set and pool safety fence so they wouldn't be damaged and cleaned up after themselves. The workers were super personable and I requested to have one tree cut back more than they did and there was no discussion- they just did it. In the state of California if you damage a tree that isn't yours the owner can sue you for up to 3 times the trees value. It's not worth it to use someone that isn't licensed, and educated.
