We had a really great experience with California Tree Design. We had a birch tree that we were pretty sure would need to be cut down, but California Tree Design sent over their certified arborist, who was very professional and told us that cutting it down wasn't necessary and that it could be treated. He was very knowledgable and told us how to properly trim the tree ourselves in the future (I had trimmed it incorrectly, which had almost killed it). They were able to send someone (who was also very professional) to provide the treatment to the tree the same day. They were very reasonably priced and very honest, as I think that most companies would have just told us that it needed to be cut down. My initial call over a weekend was promptly answered by Jared the same weekend day (even though this company is officially closed on weekends), who answered my questions and worked to quickly set up a date for my job. The crew arrived on time, and they performed all the line items in my contract well. The foreman also went over the items to make sure he understood my specifications, which were followed very well. They also the left the property clean, as they had found it. My only concern was that, early on, one trimmer allowed two large pieces to free-fall when they clearly should have been rigged for a slow and careful descent. Both pieces hit the ground with "near misses" of 1) a young tree, and 2) a redwood staircase, respectively. (If either of these had been hit, my review would have been less positive). I expressed my concern, and rigging was used appropriately for the remainder of the job. Given their overall performance, I am willing to consider these two near misses as a fluke, and I will likely hire this company again. Overall, they did a very good job. read more

After reading all the great five star reviews for this company we decided to give them a try. The previous company that we had used for years has developed some personnel problems so we decided to make a change. We have four large trees on our property plus another large tree that our neighbor wanted to have trimmed. Because of all the rain and with so many fallen trees, we expected to have to wait for awhile to get an appointment. But, as luck would have it, a California Tree Design crew just happened to be working just a couple of miles down the road and they were able to come do our job late in the afternoon. I honestly thought they would never be able to finish before dark but the crew of at least eight guys and some impressive equipment knocked it out in record time. They did a first class job on all the trees and an equally great cleanup. All five trees will be beautiful when they fill out this spring. We specifically wanted a tree service that has a certified arborist on staff, which they do. Many tree trimmers will call themselves arborists but, unless that person has a license from the American Society of Arboriculture (ASA), he or she is not a certified arborist. This is important since the guys on the crew can consult with an expert any time they spot a problem with a particular tree. Plus, it shows you that the company doing the work is serious about the quality of their services. We're happy to have a new tree service that we feel great about and we're already looking forward to next time! After a $5,000+ job trimming my oaks, they left a mess on the top of my garage. They came back when I asked, which I appreciated. When they arrived, they did not check with me or let me know that they had arrived, which I thought was odd and unprofessional. Instead of cleaning up the mess on the roof, they started trimming a tree that I neither asked them to trim nor did I want them to trim. When I discovered what they were doing, they immediately stopped. But, since then a large branch has fallen, I suspect because that had partially cut it, leaving an unbalanced tree. Ugh. Called friendly Peter, got an estimate from knowledgeable Frankie the morning after I called and they wound up bringing in a huge crew with an awesome team leader Abraham at the end of that same day, finishing the next morning. Everyone was helpful and knowledgeable. They lace trimmed my pine trees, delicately on each individual branch , preventing them from going into shock while getting rid of the top heavy material and deadwood at the very top that had been caused by an insect problem years ago. They came with a huge crew of guys on lines way up in the air as well as a wood chipper that they used to carry all of the waste away including the dead pine needles on my roof and on the ground. Would highly recommend them. There may be cheaper companies but these people are the real deal when it comes to professionalism and knowledge of different kinds of trees and their root systems. Peter has a large team and they work as a well-oiled machine. When my mom got a little spooked by how fast the team could work, Peter and two of his senior team members took extra time to speak with her. Early this year I hired California Tree Design to drop two dead trees in a canyon behind my property. We agreed the trunks would be left in the canyon and that no material was going to be taken away to keep the budget low. The problem arose when they left two large tree trunks leaning between the stump and the canyon wall. This created a large space beneath the two logs which would be very dangerous for anyone if they were to go under or climb on top of the trunks. It looked like a death trap in waiting for any child or adult. After almost six months of repeated promises to resolve the dangerous situation they still had not returned. I spoke with Peter Magana who consistently disregarded my concerns and told me it was too difficult to fix. Chris Joseph sounded much more helpful and promised he would come by and lower the trunks to the ground. Unfortunately, he too never came by. Last week I hired another tree service to do some work and I showed them the problem and asked for an estimate to make it safer. When I returned they had already trimmed the trunk to lower it flat on the ground for free. My advice is don't pay California Tree Design until the job is done to your satisfaction. They will not come back and finish once they have their money. I will never work with them again. read more
