Peter came and gave a very reasonable quote the same day that I called. His team were able to start just a couple of days later and did a phenomenal job. They shimmied you trees and got them tidied up in no time. The biggest plus is their skill - they did some beautiful shaping to trees that were very overgrown and hadn't been well cared for in the past. It's really enhanced the garden. The arborist he works with was also very knowledgeable and friendly, answering all my questions, fertilising the fruit trees and removing any disease. Another plus was their professional, polite and friendly attitude. They talked to my neighbours and made sure to clear their property of any debris and they left my property spotless - much better than they found it. Overall I would have no hesitation recommending Peter and his team. read more

Professional, friendly, genuine arborists. Called friendly Peter, got an estimate from knowledgeable Frankie the morning after I called and they wound up bringing in a huge crew with an awesome team leader Abraham at the end of that same day, finishing the next morning. Everyone was helpful and knowledgeable. They lace trimmed my pine trees, delicately on each individual branch , preventing them from going into shock while getting rid of the top heavy material and deadwood at the very top that had been caused by an insect problem years ago. They came with a huge crew of guys on lines way up in the air as well as a wood chipper that they used to carry all of the waste away including the dead pine needles on my roof and on the ground. Would highly recommend them. There may be cheaper companies but these people are the real deal when it comes to professionalism and knowledge of different kinds of trees and their root systems. They introduced themselves to my neighbor and got access to his property to take care of the branches that were above his roof and took care of not damaging his property as well as mine in a very caring manner! read more

Early this year I hired California Tree Design to drop two dead trees in a canyon behind my property. We agreed the trunks would be left in the canyon and that no material was going to be taken away to keep the budget low. The problem arose when they left two large tree trunks leaning between the stump and the canyon wall. This created a large space beneath the two logs which would be very dangerous for anyone if they were to go under or climb on top of the trunks. It looked like a death trap in waiting for any child or adult. After almost six months of repeated promises to resolve the dangerous situation they still had not returned. I spoke with Peter Magana who consistently disregarded my concerns and told me it was too difficult to fix. Chris Joseph sounded much more helpful and promised he would come by and lower the trunks to the ground. Unfortunately, he too never came by. Last week I hired another tree service to do some work and I showed them the problem and asked for an estimate to make it safer. When I returned they had already trimmed the trunk to lower it flat on the ground for free. My advice is don't pay California Tree Design until the job is done to your satisfaction. They will not come back and finish once they have their money. I will never work with them again. read more

We had a massive ficus tree that was damaging our house and plumbing. Spoke with Peter and after reviewing our options decided removing the tree was the route we wanted to go. The crew arrived on time and did an amazing job. We are so happy with how quickly the whole process took and how spotless they left the yard Would highly recommend. read more

I write a Yelp review maybe once every 5 years and that's being generous, but I was soooo impressed with California Tree Design! All the other reviews that are on here are accurate, so I won't go on and on, but -- We have a huge huge huge redwood that he could have charged me much more to trim, but he had the most competitive quote out of the three quotes we got. He also took the time to reassure me that the tree was healthy and would not fall on my house. He could have taken advantage of my fears and offered some expensive tree regimen, but he just recommended some basic clean up and educated me about the other trees on the property as well. He came on a Friday morning and by the end of the day, all five of my trees were pruned, for less than any of the others quoted, and they did a great job. read more

This company was professional, courteous, on time and thorough. We needed to have our retaining wall repaired, so we hired them to clear the space and trim the trees. They were able to show up with two crews and completed the work quickly and efficiently in prob 4 hours or so. From initial consultation to completed work was less than a week. Have already recommended them to neighbors, and would use them again. read more

California Tree Design was strongly recommended by my sister. She went through the trouble of getting several quotes. Frankie was professional, understanding of her and her neighbors' needs, and his quote was competitive (even lower than some of the others). Once we communicated with Frankie, we didn't bother getting other quotes. He was good-natured and easy to work with. He responded to texts within minutes. The crew showed up on time, and were gone in less than three hours. They removed a large tree stump (you can't even tell there was anything there) and trimmed a tall pine tree (did a terrific job of thinning out the branches). Our neighbors have had to deal with the tree's long branches and pine needles for years, and they acknowledged a job well done. They cleaned up after themselves so well. Seriously, you cannot tell six guys were walking around the front and backyard hauling around tree branches and debris. Frankie and his crew were incredibly professional, efficient, thorough, and friendly. You can't get better than these guys. read more

Great work, willing to go the extra mile as far as some additional unplanned hedge removal. The arborist expertly guided an industrious and substantial crew, who removed and ground the stump of an invasive and broadly rooted fig, Trimmed two large elms this winter, which have leafed out REMARKABLY WELL-this with telephone wires strung the length of the trees, running thru them.. the canopy and body of the elms have as stated, bloomed exceptionally well, no interaction w/ the phone lines, or a somewhat flimsy fence under these trees, dividing my property from the new neighbors who are EQUALLY enthusiastic about the great cut allowing for much needed shade in their yard. This group was a godsend in the middle of the Pandemic, and I intend to employ them when next I am in need of landscaping that vastly improved the look and comfort of my property. read more

We were approached by Con Edison and their tree hackers because our ancient oak tree was getting perilously close to the electric wires. I didn't want them to hurt this tree, which is over 200-years old, so I hired the highly skilled folks at California Tree Designs. Peter and his team did a phenomenal job, trimming the Oak in a way that supported its future growth and health. They also pruned our two orange trees, so they were best set up for healthy fruit. They were doing such a great job that our next-door neighbor hired them in the middle of our job to come to their house next. Highly recommend! read more

I was concerned about my tree growing around cable and satellite TV lines so I called up Peter, who came to evaluate my tree and gave me a quote on the spot. From the get go, I could tell he was very knowledgeable and he was able to get his team to trim the tree within an hour of our meeting. His team did a good job; as the sun was setting, however, the silhouette of the tree showed me a few sections of the tree that weren't set back. George from his team returned the following day to help resolve the problem. For the price quoted, Peter and George mentioned I wouldn't need to have the tree trimmed for another couple of years so I believe this is a good value. The previous owner's tree trimmers clearly hacked away at the tree, which you can tell affected its health. California Tree Design restored the tree to health for the long run. read more

This was the second time California Tree Design trimmed our large magnolia tree in Monrovia. They did as wonderful a job this time as they did the first time. The tree looks beautiful and is now safe to weather the windy season. They even removed a bunch of vegetation from our back fence and all was cleaned up perfectly. Thank you Patrick, Pedro and the team for a great job! read more

This might be a repeat of Alexandra's review because we had the same team and the same results. The respect Patrick, Pedro and the crew had for my huge old oak tree was remarkable. They made sure we were all on the same page as far as what and what not to do. The estimator, Jared, was equally professional and knowledgeable. The entire process, which I had been dreading, was as close to perfect as possible. Most tree trimmers want to "thin", "lace" and other bad things to oak trees. My first experience with California Tree Design means they have a customer for life. read more

Wonderful experience and would certainly use them again. They came out to trim our 100-foot eucalyptus tree, and trim a few other trees in our garden. The eucalyptus was such a big job that some other companies couldn't even handle it, but Pete and his crew did it beautifully. The clean-up was excellent too, and my adjacent neighbors were happy with the results and the clean-up on their end too. read more

I recently hired California Tree Design for the 2nd time to trim an old valley oak I have in my backyard, as well as to remove a dying tree from my side yard. Patrick and Pedro came with a team and did great work. They arrived on time in the morning, were communicative, professional, and left my property cleaner than they found it. I also just realized that they fixed a broken board in my fence! (Thank you guys!) I highly recommend working with them and look forward to doing so again in the future. read more

We called them to give some estimates on pruning some oak trees and removing some invasive trees. On the day of the job, they showed up with 4 trucks and a team of workers. What would have taken another company a full day, they finished in 4 hours. The oaks are nicely pruned and the invasive trees are like they never existed. They cleaned up nicely too. They are a great small family owned company. If you need some oaks to be pruned with care and precision, you should give them a try! read more

Absolutely wonderful team. I reached out to 5 different companies for tree removal and CTD was the only one who arrived at the time they said and provided in-depth knowledge of the types of trees I had and explained the entire process of removal. The other companies spent less than 5 minutes with me and while most had a contractor's license, they showed no employees when looking them up on CLSB's website, as a result had no worker's comp. CTD showed employees which means they take care of their team. They were the only one who also had a certified arborist on the team. The team arrived on-time, staged what they needed to and explained what each member (about 10) would be doing throughout the process. They were very conscious of what went into the surrounding neighbors' yards and promptly cleaned up anything that fell. They also were very careful with the cable/power lines that the branches crossed. Though they were the highest in pricing from all of the quotes I received, I had no hesitation and felt even more confident I made the right decision with going with them. 100% recommend them for any tree trimming service you need. read more

I learned that there was a wind warning for Pasadena this evening and, since I had been meaning to get our trees trimmed anyway, I contacted CTD via Yelp. Peter was quick to respond, came over within minutes, gave a fair bid to trim three trees, was able to start right away, and his crew did a lovely job. they cleaned up very nicely as well. This is my second time using California Tree Design. Recently, they helped me remove a giant Ash tree and scale back a Chinese elm. Ash tree had fallen branch due to termites, the team trimmed branches/trunk down and removed stump. Chinese elm was scaled back so crown is more sparse. Team was very responsive, professional and courteous. They notified my neighbor to cover his pool to reduce debris. Team did good clean up and everything was shredded and hauled away. Peter was quick to respond to my inquiry and remember my project from 2018! I would recommend this team and use their services again. read more

Peter, Chris, Abraham, Frankie and the entire crew at California Tree Design were wonderful. Before booking the appointment Peter was happy to answer questions and able to book us with short notice. We had a tree on our property that was on a steep hillside. The soil and hillside underneath was eroding away in chunks, and though the tree was beautiful and a protected tree type, it was in danger of falling onto a public street. While I reached out to the city to get an ok for an emergency removal order, I called a few tree companies to get their input. After putting in a horrible call to an arborist who waxed poetic and lectured endlessly about how I was wrong about the safety of the tree and that in fact, the roots, would protect the tree and it was more stable than my silly little mind had imagined; I hung up on that person, who had no interest in actually listening and reached out to California Tree Design. They came out, had a look, and I explained that I was seeking an emergency order for removal. He kindly explained the steps from there and let me know removal could be almost immediate once and if the ok for the emergency removal came through. Lo and behold, I received the emergency order within a few hours and the team from California Tree Design showed up shortly thereafter. They were so efficient and fast, the entire tree and all of the litter from its removal was gone in under an hour. They were professional, fast, just all around a delight to deal with. And the hillside has since slipped even more with the last barrage of rains we had, the tree was certain to not have made it. And we've since planted two more trees on our property to replace it. Thanks again California Tree Design! read more

Looking for a tree trimming/removal service? Look no further! Peter is professional, approachable, and kind. For the initial consultation we meet the company's certified arborist, Christian Joseph. He is extremely knowledgeable. He took his time to teach us about each tree, hedge, and ground cover we have around our home. He listened to our concerns and instantly came up with various options that both my husband and I agreed upon. They took advantage of my stressful situation to manipulate me into spending more money than needed and cutting down an entire large mature tree, when just a portion could have been removed. A portion of my tree had fallen due to high winds and was partially on my neighbor's roof. The estimator who came out seemed helpful. However, he stated he was an arborist and that the remaining portions of the large, old tree could fall in the next high winds. He stated the tree was uprooted, which I believed in my moment of stress. He also showed me photos of other fallen trees, which he said were in the area. He gave me two estimates, one for removing the portion that fell, and one higher for removing the whole tree. Out of fear induced by his subtle, skillful in a devious way manipulation, I opted for removing the whole tree. The next day, when I was thinking more clearly, I had major regrets for cutting down a beautiful, old tree. I looked more closely for signs of the uprooting the estimator spoke of. There were none. I called the owner, Peter, and expressed my disappointment and feeling of by taken advantage off. He admitted the estimator was not a licensed arborist. He then said he had photos of the uprooting of my tree and would send them, to assure me I was not manipulated. He never sent them, even though I called two more times asking for them. I would have given them 2 stars, since they did a decent job of removing the tree, however, they did not remove the stump and the owner lied about saying he would send the photos showing the uprooting. read more

Fantastic! they sent someone and gave me good advice with no charge, but their code for trim was very hign.

We had 2 trees that need to be removed. One was a dying black walnut in the backyard that was falling apart due to the internal termite damage and fungus growth on the trunk. Another was a palm that was starting to break our driveway concrete and grow over it. Pete came for an estimate on a Monday afternoon. He was friendly and provided a reasonable quote. We scheduled the work to happen later that week on a Wednesday. Less than hour after he did the estimate, Pete called back. He asked if it would be ok to move up cutting the trees down ahead of the storm (remember that super heavy one mid-December with flash flood warnings?) that was coming on Tuesday. I said sure. His team showed up 3 hours later. Finish the first part of cutting down the tree in less than an hour and didn't make a terrible mess. The storm came and went. Wednesday, at our original scheduled time, his team came and finished the stump grind just as quickly. Really appreciated the great work and friendly service. Definitely recommend hiring California Tree Design for any future tree work you have! read more

I've had an oak tree growing in my back yard since I've moved into this house. The roots of the tree are lifting the cement work we've done for our patio and destroying my neighbors roof to his garage. I called California Tree Design and spoke with Peter. He agreed to come to my home between 9am and 9:30am for a free estimate. Well this morning I got a call a bit earlier from Peter asking if he could come earlier to check out the tree and give the estimate, I agreed Peter showed up and provide a fair estimate to remove the tree. He informed me that he had a crew that could come by immediately and remove the tree quickly. Peter's brother Gabriel came by with an 8 man crew and removed this 35ft tall tree in no time at all. I'm pretty sure they got it all done before 9:30am They provided an extremely quick and professional service, they left both my backyard and my neighbors backyard clean from debris resulting from the tree removal.
