Immediately following the wind storms of January 7, which were so devastating to the area, JR's tree service came and cleared two trees that had fallen on two cars and cleared the road, not just for me, but for my neighbors. Today, they came and removed an oak that had been damaged in that same storm and was hanging dangerously over the street. They were very efficient in their work and left the area neat and tidy. SEPT. 29, 2025 JR's Tree Service was cutting a tree next door to where we live locally and the crew decided to shred garage can loads of paper in the large chipper. Well, something went terribly wrong in the shredding and the paper mess went everywhere. Oh too bad for the neighbors, can't deal with it now let's break for lunch and leave our mess. While the lazy crew slept, the wind blew more mess on my lawn and everywhere else. How stupid for these people to shred paper in the large chipper! JR's pruned a tall eucalyptus tree on the property adjacent to mine. JR met with us beforehand to tell us what to expect, which he said would be minor broken limbs on some of our plants in the area below the tree. So far, so good. JR leaves and the crew gets to work. A short while later, we look outside and one of our trees is basically broken in half. The crew dumped so many big limbs onto it that three major branches cracked under the weight. The tree basically lost three years of growth due to their negligence. We ask the crew (who were not wearing hard hats) to stop and call JR. He comes back and agrees with us that the damage was more than he expected, but basically says 'nothing we can do, it'll grow back.' We tell JR that we would like their insurance info so we can file a claim for our trashed tree. He tells me 'oh that's only for broken windows or something, can't we solve this another way?' After conferring, we tell him we want to go ahead with the claim. He says fine and tells me he will send me the info. He didn't send it. I remind him. He says he will send it. I tell him I'll go after his bond if he doesn't send it. He ghosts me. So now my insurance agent is filing a claim on his bond. So just know that while they seem to be pretty good at pruning trees, I wouldn't trust them based on my experience. read more

We bought a new house last year with some massive trees that had not been touched in a decade. After talking to our new neighbors, they all recommended JR's Tree Service to us. JR came over and we walked around the front and back yard while he discussed his recommendations. We have a 100 year old Deodar, camphor trees, carolina cherry trees, a cedar, and a eucalyptus. JR knows his stuff and he recognized the unique needs of each tree. The quote was reasonable but most of all we trusted him to take care of our needs. His crew did great work and cleaned up all the debris when they were done. JR's team also planted about 10 privets for us and they'll make a beautiful hedge in a few years. This company is jaw-droopingly unprofessional. In July of last year, Jesus gave us a quote for trimming our eucalyptus trees that was better than our other quotes, so we turned down those offers and scheduled with him to do it this winter. Jesus then just ghosted me for months. He didn't return texts, didn't return calls, would sometimes hang up when he did accidentally pick up the phone. If he didn't want the job, he could have told us, and we could have contracted with a good company to get the work done this winter. Finally in late December I manage to get him on the phone, mostly because he was doing work in our neighborhood and he couldn't avoid me any longer. And when I finally managed to speak to him...he raised his quote by $2K. By now it's well into winter, our trees aren't trimmed, and we've lost the quotes we had in the summer. And now of course after this recent wind storm, we have problems from our fallen eucalyptus branches. He may do his job well when it comes to cutting trees (I have no idea) but as a business professional, Jesus is about the least ethical and mature person I've ever dealt with. read more

We had a great experience with JR's Tree Service. We needed someone to trim, top off or remove our pine tree so we requested quotes from several companies. We heard about JR's Tree Service from other families in our son's school and we always see them around Pasadena working on different properties so we asked JR's Tree Service for a quote too. Jesus dropped by and listened to what we wanted done. He told us what type of pine we have in our backyard and we discussed all the options including the effect on the tree (and price for each option). We decided to trim the pine tree instead of topping it off or removing it completely. He then gave us a written quote. On the day his crew worked on the tree, they covered the fence and turf/putting green near the tree. After they completed the job, they made sure to clean up and haul away all the debris. Our pine tree now looks good and we are happy that we no longer have mounds of pine needles in the backyard. *Prior to selecting them, I actually looked up all the companies that provided quotes to confirm their license status, etc. so all companies were pretty much equal in this regard. Jesus is a certified arborist (I verified his credential with ISA) and his company is licensed and insured (also verified). I recently lost my father which put me in the position of maintaining and caring for my elderly mother's house in Pasadena. Understandably, my father was not as concerned with having his trees trimmed in his later years. Unfortunately, trees give no quarter to the elderly and continue to grow at their usual rate. The two huge sycamores that flanked the west side of the house had really grown since their last trimming years ago and posed a danger to both my mother's house and her neighbor's house should strong winds break any of the branches. A huge Eucalyptus Tree fell from my neighbor's backyard on La Loma Road onto a property I own on Thursday, March 12. The next morning after a quick search on google, "Pasadena Tree Service", I landed on JR's Tree and Landscape and called the number. Within two rings, Jesus (the owner/operator) picked up and without hesitation agreed to meet me at the property on La Loma an hour later. He's an affable, knowledgeable and reasonable man. To wit, when I asked him he named every single tree on my lot (who knew those were Pecan Trees). On the spot he gave me a bid of $800, and he had his crew come out the next day to remove the entire fallen tree. The job had some degree of difficulty with the nature of the high slope from the adjacent property. He's a great resource for the future and I highly recommend him. read more

The whole issue could be solved with $100.00. Let me make that clear. We were asked to move umbrellas in our backyard, which I did. After they were finished with the job (which they did not really clean up), I noticed one of the umbrellas was shredded. Not a huge expense but damaged none the less. Not only did JR refuse to pay for it, he wouldn't even admit that his workers were responsible. They also broke pavers in our backyard, left our gutters full of branches and debris all over the yard. The tree trimming wasn't done very well either. JR's hustle is undercutting competitors price wise but his service is reflected in that. They caused damage and essentially lied about it. Jesus and his crew did an excellent job! We had them remove an enormous ash tree that was too close to our house. It was not only a big job but a risky one since the tree was very close to our roof and our neighbor's. They also ground the huge stump to make it level to the ground. They trimmed another very big ash tree, and 4 other medium/large size trees. The quality of the work was outstanding and they also did a tremendous job cleaning up afterwards. I've used JR's Tree and Landscape service for almost a year. JR's crew did the initial clean-up of my yard when I purchased my house, and then began weekly maintenance. Recently, after putting in a pool, JR re-landscaped the backyard, opening up a space that before (because of poorly placed plantings and some choices that did not fit the architecture of the house) made the yard look small, messy and a little jungle-esque in some ways! Included in the recent landscaping was the trimming of most of the trees (there is one we are waiting until January to cut back), the removal of succulents that while appropriate in California were not so appropriate with the English Tudor architecture on the property; planting of ground cover, plumerias (in a shady area obviously!), roses, cherry hedges, jasmine, mulching, reconnecting some previously existing and laying of new sprinkler lines, and some more clean-up toward the back of the property. The result is a clean-looking, opened up space with an appropriate garden for the architectural style in addition to location of plantings and California climate that is on a water-saving but plant-appropriate timed sprinkler system. The front yard was cleaned-up almost a year ago when I first purchased the property. We have kept all of the mature fruit and pine trees (some almost 90 years old and still bearing fruit!), and of course the old camellia bushes that were planted when the house was built in 1926. JR's guys who perform the weekly maintenance service are always on time, have never missed a week (they take one week vacation every year in August, but JR sends all his clients notice ahead of time) and they do a terrific job keeping up almost 11,000 square feet of property! The guys who work for him are clean-cut, nice, polite and most of them are fluent in both English and Spanish. JR is not the cheapest landscaper out there, but often with weekly maintenance and landscaping, you get what you pay for - and they have transformed a yard that was over-grown, messy and stylistically not quite right into a clean, pleasant oasis that encourages one to spend more time outside in the California sunshine! I'm attaching some pictures both before and after - the transformation is quite astonishing! I highly recommend JR for both weekly maintenance and also for clean-up, tree trimming, installing sprinkler systems and landscaping your property - he's pretty easy to deal with, does what he says he is going to do, when he says he's going to do it, and for the price that you agreed upon. read more
