Arin and his team worked with us over a couple of years to completely revamp our backyard. His pricing is fair and for us most importantly, he and his teams stick to their timelines and are very communicative. Several years ago, we added some pavers and grass to the back portion of our yard. Recently with all the rain and some storm drain issues, we were having flooding whenever it rained. Eight years ago we hired the landscape designer Anthony Dornian of AD Design to transform our entire property in South Pasadena. His wonderful landscape design included both our back yard (with a pool, sitting and a dining area), and the front yard with a new driveway, walkways, lawn and planting areas. At the time however we couldn't afford to build the entire project, so we only built the back yard (note: we didn't know Arin at the time, and he didn't build this phase of work). This past year we decided to finish the project. Anthony recommended we consider using Arin for this phase. Arin had worked on other projects of Anthony's with great results. Buildcal Landscape and Shawgrass turf changed my life! I've doubled my living space and entertaining area. We don't wear shoes in our home, and now, with the wonderful turf and concrete, our yard is SO CLEAN that we can be barefoot inside and out! No more stopping to put shoes on and take them off at the doors; no dirt dragged into the house - it's heaven! I met Olivier a couple years ago when he came to give me a quote for Duraturf artificial grass. He gave me valuable feedback and helped me realize that I was only in the beginning planning phase of my project. He suggested I think about more detailed plans for my yard so that I don't waste money installing something for a short term and have the added cost of redoing it later. I really appreciate that he wasn't a high-pressure salesperson. The product that I ended up choosing is the Shawgrass Coastal collection. It looks FANTASTIC - like grass, but better! It has great color and shine like live grass. It's made in America, kid safe, made with no lead. I love that it's low maintenance and saves water and I don't have to use pesticides. PLUS it has a 15-year warranty. I figure if I have to replace it in 15 years, I will have gotten my money's worth by then! The sand-type filling at the base between the blades of turf is called Hydrochill. It's pet friendly, FDA-approved, and it keeps the turf cool. I think it works by trapping moisture at night and releasing it during the day via evaporation to keep it cool. Does it get hot? Well, yes, but only in very peak times when it's 100 degrees out and the sun has been beating down on it for a couple hours straight. And even then it's no worse than walking barefoot on hot sand or concrete (I know this because I've hopped back and forth from my concrete to turf during one really peak time, and they were equally hot.) If I water the turf, the Hydrochill does its magic and all is fine. But I've only had one day in the last 2 months (June and July in Culver City) that watering it was necessary. Olivier and Arin manage a great crew. They're always on time, work hard, are respectful, and clean up after themselves. They were great in accommodating me by working sometimes with my back gate closed so my small dog could have access to the yard while they worked. Their craftmanship is good. I can't see any seams or any problems in my turf and it's already held up to lots of kids playing on it and driving a little electric kids car on it. Another awesome benefit - for me - is that when they put in turf, they put in drainage! And I happen to be a mom whose retail therapy involved buying my kids an inflatable water slide. I also have a bounce house. And when I had grass, it was a huge pain to have to pick up the inflatable toys and move them so that the grass didn't die underneath; or so that bugs from the grass wouldn't get into it; or for the gardener to come every week. And it was always annoying and gross having grass clippings, etc. Plus there was the time the bounce house was accidentally hit by a weedwacker and needed a repair. Just a little added value :) I'd like to emphasize one more time that I love how CLEAN turf is! And I love that I don't have loud lawnmowers and other machinery in my yard every week making a racket and waking my kids or disturbing my work. Buildcal did two jobs for me: concrete & pebbles and turf. These were done by two separate teams: Arin led the concrete and Olivier led the turf. The coordinate with one another but otherwise operate independently. For example, I was billed separately by each of them and was required to put down a small deposit for each of them. Both teams did well. They were reasonably responsive over text/email and did work according to my specifications (I had drafted plans for them). The crews generally cleaned up after their job was done, but not 100%, which I have found to be common with crews that work on our house. There were a couple small gripes here and there (ex: not removing some of the sprinkler pipes and pouring concrete in that spot even though I told them multiple times that I am getting rid of all of our sprinklers, and then getting charged a small additional amount for this work), but overall they did a good job. Regarding the concrete work, I told them to do one thing (for a small part of the project) and then changed my mind later. They had to make some last minute adjustments to handle this change (including paying me more), and I was appreciative for that. The turf and concrete look great. The turf, especially, looks very good for being artificial. And they put some material on it so that it doesn't get as hot as it would otherwise (additional cost, which is fine), which is great because we plan to walk on it. Our 2 year old son loves running on our lawn now! read more
