I came back to Vermont to discover that Johnny Seesaw's has reopened with a new and better building. The food and staff were absolutely fantastic. I could not of asked for a better experience. The Prime Rib was what I really looked forward to but they didn't have it on Sundays. In its place was the Rib Eye. It made made exactly to my liking. The salad was fantastic and so was the dessert. I will be back to this gem of a restaurant when i come back to the area. read more

This review is for Seesaw's Lodge which is owned together with Johnny Seesaw's restaurant and bar. I had the chance to stay at the lodge in October for a wedding weekend in Manchester. It was the perfect cabin retreat but was newly designed to provide a modern experience. The cabins are so beautiful and have beautiful views of the mountains and cozy areas to curl up with wooden stoves. Though I was a visitor in the fall, I can see how this is the perfect cabin rental for ski weekends while visiting Bromley. As for the Johnny Seesaw's, it was really a surprise to walk in and see a European style chalet in the middle of Vermont. Great care was taken to design this restaurant and though I didn't get a chance to have a meal there, I could see how it will be a gem of Manchester in the upcoming winter season. The most impressive part is the giant fire pit inside the restaurant bringing the outdoors inside. I can't wait to visit on my next trip after a day of skiing! read more

Here's what you'll have to put up with: a harried staff during peak ski season dining times, a slightly less-than-patient front host, dishes that are "yankee cuisine" in the most confusing way, and patrons that are often awful. Buck up and deal. It's worth it. What you'll get is a place that simply feels like home: a warm, welcoming fire, food that is made with care, originality, and thought, and a staff that is focused on helping you settle in, make good choices, and feel at ease. Order one thing: the prime rib. Have a glass of red wine. Let your kids wonder off into the game room. Feel the blast of the fireplace. And let yourself melt into the wonder that is Johnny Seesaw's. Seesaw's Lodge is charming, welcoming, cozy and everything you want your Vermont "get-a-way" to be! The atmosphere is top notch, the food is delicious and the service is super friendly. We were extremely impressed with how the new ownership incorporated the "old" Johnny Seesaw's with the new "smart" Seesaw's Lodge...the details are very innovative and many are state of the art. It is steps away from Bromley Mountain, 15 minutes from Stratton and a short ride to the shops of Manchester. The management and food are complete garbage. I Attempted to make a reservation on the phone and the lady manager tells me that the only reservation available is for 9pm and they close at 9:30pm but are welcome to stay until we finish. We took the reservation in any case. However, we felt completely rushed as soon as we came in. Steak was too well done. Food was so salty that both my wife and I had trouble digesting it. We went to Johnny Seesaw's for the first time last night. Our food was excellent. The charcuterie board was very tasty, our salads were fresh and my wife loved her roasted cauliflower. Halibut, prime rib and Bolognese entrees were all delicious and cooked to perfection. Service was great, both friendly and attentive. Wine (by the glass) was also very good. Our only disappointment were the cocktails. While the cocktail ingredients are creative and should come together well, the drinks tasted like they had not been measured, stirred or shaken with the care and attention of trained bartender. read more

This is in response to C.B.'s review below. I have eaten in this building and around these parts for over a decade. Anyone has a right to their opinion and everyone can have a bad night but to rate this place one star ignores the place's history and context. If one finds this place unworthy of more than a single star I pity that person's culinary experiences. For a McDonald's location in hell can achieve a 2 star rating. Johny Seesaw's In now under the best owner, chef, combination of any incarnation I've experienced. This is NOT your daddy's Seesaw. I'm surprised they kept the legendary name because the name was so beaten down by bad food and service in the past. But bold moved prove rewarding. This place has one of the best atmosphere and menu I've experienced in the area. I have ZERO interest in defending this place except for my own selfish desire to keep it up and running. If you're reading this review go and eat there. Then write a review of your experience for their future guests and help keep this place open for all of us up here that crave a creative well made meal. Long live Johny Seesaws. Went there Saturday night for the first time in a long time. I had prime rib, it was absolutely perfect. Was served with horseradish sauce which just made it delicious. The bread they served with the meal was fresh and hot. Wanted to have desert but after finishing the prime rib wife needed a wheel barrel to haul me out. It is one of the gems in the bromley area. Johnny Seesaw's was a wonderful experience. They have rebuilt the lodge with the reclaimed timbers from the original structure. The building is beautiful, inside and out, the staff is warm and welcoming, the restaurant was filled with local's, and the food was excellent. We had the specials, Sweet Butternut Squash soup, Tomatoes with Mozzarella & Basil, and the best Rib Eye beef with mushrooms and onions! SO DISAPPOINTING! Have looked forward to going here ever since the construction began. Pretentious is the best word to describe everything. We were identified as "locals" which is really off putting as we are "locals" who have a lot of connections in the area. How unfortunate for them! Food arrived cold. Told them so and were told we would have 10% deducted. NEVER DID. Food was unappealing and not anything special at all even though they tried to make it sound sophisticated. I will never go back and will spread the word to all of my "local" friends. Miss the old place terribly. Good luck. read more

They really did a nice job with this place. The food is solid and the atmosphere in the dining room with the huge open fire pit is pure Vermont. Great place to stay for skiing Bromley. Come here every year with friends and kids. Not a place for the wife, mine at least. Free ~5 minute shuttle ride. Very good included breakfast. If you are allergic/don't like dogs, don't stay here. Good bar scene, and I hear dinner is good too. read more

It's such a beautiful dining room, European chalet decor, the middle fireplace is amazing, we'll go back just for that in winter. Kids menu was great, thanks for offering some real food like steaks and chicken instead of the usual Mac and cheese/hot dog and so on. (No judgment there, I was born and raised in Europe where we didn't have "kid food" so that's how I raised my 3 kids and now it's too late!) It's pricey and VT now has good food options, therefore expectations are higher than before. Ceviche was good, best in VT. Salad is what took a star from this review. Salad, in my option shows the attention to detail on a menu. Summer salad came drenched in dressing and no arugula as the menu stated. Burger, steak were both great, kids steak and chicken as well. Service was great, we were served by a lady we knew from another restaurant. We had 4 down on the reservation, had a 5th person last minute, they accommodated without a glitch. read more

Not impressed. Service was super slow. Granted it was busy but I've been to lots of restaurants when they are busy and service has been fine. My scallop dinner was good but portion was very small. As one who almost always takes food home, I was left hungry. Finally, the pricing for kids was outrageous. Kids got a plate of pasta with butter (that's it) for $12. One tiny scoop of ice cream (and btw, they didn't have any chocolate sauce, whipped cream or any garnish available) was $6. Won't be back. There are many other options. read more

The menu is a bit pretentious, and prices are a bit high, especially for what you get. Food was amazing, service was great. Sadly, the dessert course cost them a star. I had the swordfish special and broccoli rabe which were perfectly cooked and delicious. My friend had the duck which was great too. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the center fire place area was great for pre dinner cocktails. The waiter took our dessert order at about 9:15 and reminded us that they close at 10pm. While we were waiting for our dessert, the staff were told to empty the logs that had recently been placed on the center fire place. They were instructed to place these burning logs into a bucket of water. The entire dining area filled with smoke. It was still only 9:30, but we were reminded again that they wanted to close by 10. The smoke was so bad, we had to take our dessert to go. This put a negative ending to our wonderful dinner and the apple strudel was soggy and cold by the time we got home. I will return as the food was delicious, but we were disappointed that the manager and staff were so eager to get rid of us well before the 10 pm closing time. read more

Not sure what happened to this place. Been coming here for 10 years. Love the atmosphere, and the big fire place in the center of the room. Perfect ambiance...just what you expect when you think vintage Vermont ski lodge. I've never had any complaints with the staff - they're always professional and efficient, whether the place is slow or busy. But the food...really sub par, based on my last 3 visits. Last night (and it was definitely my last dinner there) was just plain poor. Lousy steaks - dry, chewy and overcooked - total lack of flavor. I had the filet, my friend had sirloin. The sides were bland and tasteless...I have seriously had better from a microwave package. OK mussels meuniere to start, but downhill after that. I tend to forgive a place an occasional bad night, but the last 2 visits here have been major disappointments. read more

This was such a disappointment.. Prices of new York city restaurants and service of a friendlys. We had an 830 reservation and they rushed us for ours order, never brought us bread until we asked for the 3 rd time, mussels were tasteless and quite expensive.. My husbands ribs at $25 were cold and the side veggie, carrots, we're overlooked and tasteless. This was by far the worst restaurant in the area we have been to. Johnny Seesaw's a great place to dine after a long day of skiing. The atmosphere is top notch for a rustic Vermont setting. The dining room is open with a huge circular fireplace in the center. The staff is friendly and offers good suggestions on what to order. I couldn't keep me hands off the fresh baked bread which left little room for the appetizer I split- steamed mussles- which were delcious! For my main course I got scrimp scampi over pasta. The shrimp were large and juicy and the pasta had just enough garlic to whet my tastebuds. Other dishes ordered at my table included sirloin and salmon- both dishes were met with enjoyment and the steak was so large both people who ordered it had to take almost half of it home in a doggy-bag! We finished the evening splitting one dessert- raspberry creme brulee- which was a tasty treat as we each drank a coffee to aide in digestion. read more

This restaurant has the best French onion soup I've ever had in my life! (And I love French onion soup). According to the waitress the cook has been making it since he was 16. I ordered a steak for dinner. It was cooked perfectly and quite delicious. I also had their creme brûlée which was fantastic! The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere & the staff is friendly. Went with friends for a special college reunion weekend. Called for reservations and was told only 5:00 or 9:00 available - slightly strange as the ski season has not yet begun. Took the 5:00 reservation but got several text reminders for 5:15. Arrived on time to smoke filled restaurant (seems they may have had issues with Fireplace. No mention was made by hostess but it was very noticeable.) Was given lovely table in the corner. Waitress was attentive and recommended a good wine - we bought 2 bottles to go with our delicious meal. Ordered yummy dessert, got the check, receipts were just received when senior hostess came to our table and asked if we could get up and move to couches. We were basically told to leave. No thank you, no appreciation of our willingness to move, no offer of free drinks. We were basically kicked out and left with a bad taste in our mouth and we smell like we've been at bonfire. Hospitality 101 says you offer the customer something if the customer is being imposed upon. We were not lingering, we moved at the pace the food was served. The food is not inexpensive so customer service should step up to equal the quality of the food which was excellent. read more

My family loves this place. The ambiance is very casual and has a nice, authentic Vermont feel, which is perfect after a day of skiing. It is great for families with kids (even has a game room). I can't vouch for all the food but the Prime Rib is the best I've ever had, with a perfectly cooked baked potato on the side. The maple-sesame dressing on the salad is delicious and the bread is homemade and warm. Great dessert selection. We come here at least once a year and look forward to coming back again. read more

Exceptionally nice and we'll thought out menu. Just the right variety of meats, fish, cheese seafood and specialities. We loved the venison and hanger steak. The real french fries were terrific. Fairly priced and varied wine list made you feel good about choosing wine. Chocolate dessert is fabulous. It's nice to see an old style Vermont ski lodge take on a new life following what appears to be an extensive and very well done renovation. My husband and I have been going to Johnny Seesaw's for years and it's one of our favorite spots in the Manchester Valley. The hearty American fare is delicious on cool, crisp fall evenings and nothing beats the huge circular fireplace or the cozy couches by the open hearth in the dead of winter. We've also visited Seesaw's in the spring and summer and the menu changes seasonally. The chef does wonderful things with local and seasonal produce; don't forget to ask about specials! The maple-soy glazed salmon I've had there was to die for. Johnny Seesaw's is also a great B&B. Breakfasts are huge and hearty and I'm just a sucker for sharing my morning meal with the Lords of the Manor (the resident canines), who make a practice of looking at you soulfully while eyeing your Vermont smoked bacon. When visiting Manchester, or anywhere in Southern Vermont, you have your pick of quaint B&Bs, luxurious inns, and ski chalets to accommodate you. Most also feature dining establishments that are nothing to disdain, or the innkeepers can easily point you in the direction of a good meal in Manchester proper. But none of these places can really compare to the experience of staying at Johnny Seesaw's up Rt. 11 in Peru, overlooking the Manchester valley in the shadow of Mt. Equinox. There's a reason they refer to the "The Legend" on their website; staying there is legendary. read more
