I went to Johnny Manhattan's last night for the first time with friends, one who was celebrating a birthday. They had all dined here in 2022 and had very good things to say. It was a Wednesday night, so the parking lot was only about 1/3 full when we arrived. Our reservation was for 6:45. We were promptly seated, but waited 15 minutes for anyone to come to our table. When our server arrived, she was very friendly, but we never saw her again. After she took our drink order, someone else arrived at the table with our drinks, but mine was missing. I said something and waited another 30 minutes before getting my drink. We ordered the cheese curds as an appetizer, and they were so overcooked, that all the cheese had drained out of the breading, leaving a hollow breading ball with no cheese left. I ordered the Caesar salad and it was beyond disappointing. Soggy, limp lettuce, 4 stale croutons, no parmesan cheese at all. The dressing was very fishy and salty, as if they had used way too many anchovies. One of my friends ordered a filet, medium. When it came to the table, it had a wooden steak marker in it that said "rare." She reminded our (new) server that she had ordered her steak cooked medium and asked if this was a mistake. He said, let's cut into the steak and see. Sure enough, it was rare. It went back to the kitchen. When it came back 15 minutes later, he had a new filet for my friend, and asked again that she cut into it to ensure it was properly cooked. Once again, it was rare. It went back to the kitchen a second time. When her steak came back to the table a third time, it was accompanied by a new server, our third of the night! This time, the filet was well-done, and was as tough as a piece of leather. My friend ended up eating the baked potato and took her filet home to give to her dog. At this point, we had been at the restaurant for 2.5 hours and we just wanted the experience to be over. By this point the owner had been notified of what was happening, and quickly came to our table to talk to us. I was very impressed with the way she treated us, and she ultimately ended up comping our drinks. She is the reason I would consider giving the restaurant a second chance. read more

OHMYGOODNESS! One of the most delicious dinners we have enjoyed in a lovely setting with a fabulous server, Noah. First of all, Noah is one of the most personable servers. Just the right amount of friendly engagement, helpful information and stellar service. The calamari and eggplant appetizers or delectable. The main course was phenomenal. I had the salmon with mango salsa, risotto & French green beans that were cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the prime rib and we were floored at the slab of deliciousness that arrived on his plate. Total melt in your mouth. And the desserts (we ordered all) were heavenly. What a classy and delicious dining experience! New to the area, we dined on New Year's Eve, had a reservation. My husband and I have dined in many big cities, small supper cubs and lived in four states. We highly recommend Johnny Manhattan's for the food, the ambiance and the service. We had the ribeye and the prime rib. Both were tender and delicious. The cheesy hash brown casserole is to die for. Our cocktails per perfect. A hidden gem in the middle of beautiful surroundings. One of my favorite restaurants and close to home

We made reservations online for the same evening. When we arrived, they didn't have the reservation, but they accommodated us anyway. The restaurant was beautiful and comfortable. We were served bread with a small dipping bowl of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We asked for butter pats. I had a whiskey old fashioned that didn't appear to be muddled but delicious all the same! My husband ordered spaghetti and meatballs and I had the shrinp scampi with a house salad. My husband ordered the wedge salad as a substitution to the house salad. The wedge salad was incredibly large...it was a to share portion! The spaghetti was not quite al dente with little to no sauce. The meatballs were just OK. My scampi was done perfectly, with 4-5 large shrimp over angel hair pasta. We weren't offered any parmesan cheese and didn't think to ask for it. The bill was $75, as there are no substitutions allowed. Server was pleasant. Not sure if we'll return. It's a 45 minute drive for us. Beautiful restaurant! Attitude of staff, food quality and service has really gone down hill. The hostess was very crabby to start the night off - not pleasant and welcoming, she acted like we were bothering her. Yes, they were busy, but not overly busy. There was no reason for an attitude. For the food, the appetizer of onion strings and cheese curds were good, the salads very fresh and mushroom soup delicious! No one in our group of five really loved their main course though. The salmon was dry, baked potato was dried up and almost inedible, stuffed tenderloin was average, the chicken sandwich had to have ketchup added in order to give it flavor and moisture. That part was very disappointing. After ordering chocolate cake and waiting for about 15 minutes for it the waitress came back to say they were out of it. Ugh... When you pay close to $300 for a Christmas Tradition Meal it should be of much higher quality. We were told three kitchen staff had not shown up for work that night...but still..The whole experience took 2 1/2 hours? Sat down at 6;30 and left at 9. Probably wont be back. read more

4.5 stars. Very quaint, beautiful bar and dining room greeted us on our first visit to Johnny Manhattan's. We were the first customers of the day on Saturday, 4/28/12 and sidled up to the bar for a couple of drinks. The bartender, Anne, was very warm and friendly, made great cocktails and answered all the questions we had about the the restaurant's history and the menu. We then asked to be seated in the dining room and were given a cozy booth, where we first ordered an appetizer of crab cakes. Crab cakes were excellent and obviously home made. We then ordered the filet and a New York steak. Dinner comes with soup and salad. Salads were very good. Potato, mushroom & crab soup was cream based, which I wasn't expecting, and only had a tidbit of crab in it. Just OK. There were other soup choices, but don't remember. Both steaks were outstanding; maybe the best steak I've eaten in Wisconsin at any restaurant, including Eddie Martini's, Mr. B's or Coerpers', etc. Charred perfectly on the outside; flavorful and tender inside. Johnny Manhattan's is definitely now our "go to" place for a steak dinner in Milwaukee (Hubertus). read more

Beautiful setting and decor. We both had the baked french onion soup which was excellent. I had the scallop dinner with risotto. To my dismay. the risotto and spinach was very salty and unappetizing. The scallops were just OK. My husbands fillet was outstanding however his ribs were very mediocre. The ribs very overbaked and covered with a thick, sweet Bar-B-Q sauce. It had been quite awhile since I last visited. Used to be a go to spot for beautiful atmosphere and a great steak. The remodel is gorgeous. We were early and plenty of seating still available so we decided to have a drink first. My cosmo was nothing more than a regular vodka and cranberry. My friends had bloody Mary's and had no complaints. The menu no longer lists fish fry but instead several seafood specials that included a known farm raised fish with a $26 price tag. I was pleased to see a corned beef and cabbage special but ended up ordering the filet since my friends ordered the corned beef and the display refrigerator had several beautiful and thick steaks shown. We also ordered the haystack onions at $10. Seemed a bit pricey but they arrived light , crispy and perfectly seasoned. They were worth it. While waiting for our dinners we ordered another round of drinks. This time mine arrived worse than before and without any garnish. For a place that boasts a sign offering to craft your cocktails you would think they would be able to make some of the simplest recipes! Our salads were filled with super fresh dark greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and onion. Very good. When my steak arrived I was a little shocked at how bare my plate was. The potatoes were on a separate plate but still. My steak was tiny and few scattered mushrooms didn't help in making my steak look any closer to the $30 price tag Cutting into it only increased my disappointment. It was tender but a bit stringy and obviously not a center cut choice filet that one would expect at that price but seemed more like $7.99lb cow tenderloin. The mashed potatoes I chose had cabbage and although delicious, arrived cold. On the other hand, the corned beef and cabbage specials were delicious and heaped on the plate. Almost worth the $18 price tags. I did notice several plates of food being delivered to other tables that looked really good so perhaps I just got a bad steak as a fluke but between that, the poorly made drinks and the prices, I will be in no hurry to return again. read more

We visited Johnny's on a rainy Wednesday evening. Everything about our experience was amazing. Called for reservations, very polite and knowledgeable person handled this. We haven't been here in years (it's our hour drive for us). Started at the bar with a cocktail. Bar area is beautiful with all that wood. Bartender suggested the Johnny Manhattan......delicious! The ladies in our party had old fashions, equally good. Male bartender was attentive We were seated promptly, water and menus given to us right away. Waitress was also attentive and knowledgeable. One person in our group wanted his steak breaded and chef accommodated his request (friend said it was excellent). Husbands spiedini was good and served with pasta. Shrimp scampi and chicken Marsala (served with mashed potatoes and fresh broccoli) were both quality meals. Meals were prepared for us, not frozen or packaged ingredients. Total bill for 4 meals and 1 cocktail was $182. Definitely will be back for special occasions!!!! read more

In recent years this restaurant has really stepped it up in all aspects. The food is to die for, the service is superb, the ambiance is relaxing and comfy. The cocktails are made well and with care, and the bar area is always playing WI sports games. What's really nice is the separation between the bar and the extensive dining area. What can I say about this place. Well I just loved it. Great old world feeling decor. With plenty of custom wood work, stone and copper fireplaces. I can't wait to come in the summer. Friendly staff and great service and food. We came for the Friday fish fry, but will be coming back for the steaks. They also have handmade pizza to go. Plenty of bar space but fills up quick early. If you can wait to eat at 8pm or after you will get a spot at the bar for a cocktail or after dinner drink. read more

My mother heard great things about this place and wanted the whole family to try it for her birthday. We started as a part of 6 and increased to 8. The host was very accommodating with the adjustments to our reservation. The service was top notch. 5 stars. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the service. With our large group we covered the menu pretty well. Not one of use thought any dish was terrible but nothing really jumped out at us either. Few comments: Prime Rib - large thick cut. Visually pleasing. Slightly dry and not very juicy. Had more fat on the meat than I have ever see before. Chicken Parm - very very basic. Said light breading but looked like a plain chicken breast. Served over a water tasting noodles and tasteless red sauce. You could tell the noodles were not fully drained as water was all over the plate. Spiedini - this was as close to terrible as it can come. Not even sure this can be called a Spiedini. I come from a family that has Spiedini cook offs at holidays. I have tried at least 25 different kinds and this was the worse by far. My fiancé who I recently introduced her to them said " this taste more like a meatball." We frequently dine here and had a very enjoyable experience last night. Tiffany was our bartender; she was terrific, experienced, and patient with us. We haven't had "all" good experiences here, however, Tiffany sure made up for that. We never had to wait for a drink, she knew the menu, and was willing to take our order at the bar. (A previous bartender didn't know the menu, so we had to order from a server, who seemed very inconvenienced by taking our order. The food was great last night. The chef (whose name I did not get) was dead on with my special tuna request and didn't reprimand me as they did at a different establishment. Thank you Chef and Tiffany! We had an abrupt and disappointing end to our evening when the overly empowered and snarky little hostess asked us to vacate our table before we had finished our bottle of wine. I wish she had asked us to leave BEFORE I left a $75 tip! Our party of 4 arrived on time, were seated promptly, ordered a round of drinks, an appetizer to share, dinners off the specialty menu with salad upgrades and dinner enhancements and a bottle of wine for the table. Our server, Savannah, was polite and attentive. The food was also prompt and enjoyable. I paid the bill and we were finishing the last sips of our wine when the affront occurred. We were not loud, there were open tables in sight and other parties around us that had been seated before us were still there. Our reservation was for 4:45 and the time stamp on my receipt was 5:50 - an hour and five minutes did not seem to be too much of an overstay for an almost $500 evening. On the whole Johnny Manhattan's is a very overrated restaurant. With the COVID-19 situation still going on, some of the restaurant staff didn't wear masks and this especially true for us since our waitress didn't wear a mask and did not maintain any social distancing. However the waiter who was in training with our waitress was far more professional than her. We ordered Haystack Onion Rings for our appetizer and it was very salty and very unpleasant to enjoy. I ordered a Petite Filet which was very good tasting and cooked to perfection. The other members were less unfortunate then me as their dinners were less then sub-par. On a whole our dinner experience was very disappointing and on that note we have decided not to go back to Johnny Manhattan's. read more

We came to Johnny Manhattan's to celebrate a birthday, and the four of us enjoyed cocktails sitting near the fireplace next to the bar which is such a beautiful spot. Collins was wearing his kilt for the high holiday (St Pat's!) and we coaxed him to show us some sass. We all laughed and everyone was so friendly. We had dinner in the wine room which is more intimate than the larger restaurant space. Taylor our server was great--efficient, friendly, and attentive--everything you want in a server! Our food was outstanding; the rack of lamb, broiled pork chops, even the chicken all seasoned to perfection and succulent juicy. The portion sizes were more than we could polish off (well, one of us did) and we shared dessert. Every staff member we encountered from first being greeted by the host to the bartenders to the server at table to the woman who took our pictures after dinner on the red couch left of the bar--everyone had a smile and handled the busy crowd with professionalism and courtesy. It shows that this entire crew really knows how to do their jobs in a superlative manner. We love Johnny Manhattan's; a great venue for fun and food! read more

Was here years ago when it was, in fact, a WI Supper Club. Went last week, and now its an Upscale Steak House (still a supper club, I suppose). Beautiful dining room off of large bar area - natural sunlight and airy. Two smaller dining rooms, which have been updated, more intimate. We had a reso for 7:45 on a Saturday. We were seated 5 minutes after arriving. Extensive wine list, bartenders mixed a good old fashion - so great bar. Menu isn't huge (a good thing), but has all the classics - Steak, prime rib, scallops, pasta and apps. It was busy, and service was a tad slow. They were already out of the Prime rib (we were going to get it), as well as 2 of 3 specials. We started with shrimp cocktail - 4 beautiful large shrimp, but nothing special (good shrimp, but your usual shrimp cocktail). I "settled" on the filet - is was awesome. A tiny bit over cooked from the requested med-rare, but it melted in my mouth and flavor was spot on. I didn't even share (even offer to share!) with my partner. He had the new york strip, and said it was outstanding. I wouldn't write home about the rosemary potatoes - should have stuck with a baked potato, it is a steak house for crying out loud. Our friends both had scallops - beautiful presentation - no complaints. We order the recommended Key Lime pie, they brought out a cheesecake instead by accident, which then they gave to us. However, they were out of Key Lime, so we ordered the Italian Lemon cake. Both were decedent and finished off the meal perfectly. Overall great experience - best steak I have had in a long time (blew pants of $55 filet at Vegas steak house). Try it, you'll like it. read more

Perhaps I am slightly biased when writing this review as I grew up coming to Johnny Manhattan's with my family. It's been a few years since I've been here and had a gift card, so I figured I might as well check it out. The renovation looks truly beautiful. They didn't skip out on finishes and really created a beautiful atmosphere. However, it overlooks a parking lot and a broken down barn. Not the type of view you'd expect from an upscale steakhouse. Personally, I really love their smaller scale, prohibition style restaurant that they had pre-renovation, but that's neither here nor there at this point. I had the rack of lamb, the rest of the table had the steaks and veal parmesan and we shared the calamari. My rack of lamb was to be cooked medium rare. I received a very charred, raw in the middle, toughest hunk of lamb I've ever had in my life. The rib eyes also followed suit. The veal parmesaen was okay, nothing noteworthy. I also had an incorrectly made Moscow mule, I'm not quite sure how you can forget lime in a drink with only three ingredients, but whatever. It took over an hour for us to receive our entrees on a night where half the tables were empty....not pleased. Needless to say, if I am going to spend the amount of money on a high end meal, next time it will not be at Johnny Manhattan. Do yourself a favor and hit up a Bartelotta, Carnevor or even Zarlettis, because aside from a beautiful dining room, this place has very little to offer. read more
