Besides a strong preference for local non-chain eateries, I'm not coming all the way to Wisconsin and not getting cheese curds. Found this place on Yelp. Aaaaand.....I'm in love. The dark atmosphere and heavy, dark all-wood decor gives a vibe you can't find at any chain eatery. Our server, Bailey, was great at just simply interacting on a human level and making us out-of-towners feel welcome in what is obviously a locals hang-out. And yes, I got my cheese curds. But the star of the night was the beer cheese burger. Quite honestly one of the best, if not THE best burger I've ever had. Get one. You NEED this in your life. Trust me.

I got the Manhattan off their specialty menu and my husband got their autumn barrel Manhattan. After trying both--highly recommend the one off their specialty menu. It was definitely superior quality. It's served over a block of ice so if you want it up, you may want to mention that when ordering. It tasted more like a classic old fashioned than a Manhattan but I'm not complaining because I love classic bourbon old fashioned cocktails as well. For a starter we got their much raved about bang bang shrimp. It came on a bed of greens and was good! For my dinner I got their seasonal chicken and dumpling soup and a side salad. Both were solid. The salad was definitely more ample than I was expecting. My husband got some sort of salmon alfredo pasta dish that came with roasted asparagus mixed in. I had a bite and he ordered well--it was decadently buttery and delicious. The service was super kind throughout our stay. Our server checked in on us regularly without being overbearing. Get to it!

Food: First-time visit. We're new to the area and have…read moredriven past La Cabaña many times, so we decided it was finally time to stop in. As soon as we were seated, we were served a complimentary basket of chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and slightly warm. The salsa was good, although I personally prefer a chunkier style. To start, my wife ordered a Dos Equis, and I tried the house Paloma. It was an excellent cocktail, although at $12.48 it felt a little pricey. We also ordered the fresh guacamole, which was very good. It had a nice chunky texture and fresh flavor, although I think it could have used just a touch more salt. For our entrées, my wife ordered the Pastor Tacos, and I chose the Drunken Tacos, one each with shrimp, shredded beef, and chorizo. The Pastor Tacos were unfortunately the biggest disappointment of the meal. The pork was dry and lacked the juicy, well-marinated flavor I usually expect from al pastor. Adding some of the guacamole definitely helped. They came with double tortillas, but unlike many great al pastor tacos, there wasn't enough juice to justify them. My Drunken Tacos were a mixed bag. The shrimp and chorizo tacos were both excellent, with plenty of flavor. The shredded beef taco, however, was fairly bland by comparison. Each entrée came with generous portions of rice and beans. While everything was served hot, the presentation could have been better. Some of the food looked as though it had simply been dropped onto the plate. A little more attention to plating would have made the meal feel more polished. Service: We received a friendly greeting when we arrived and asked for a table on the patio. Our server, Shaylinne, took great care of us throughout the meal. She was friendly, attentive, and helpful with our order. The service was consistently excellent. Atmosphere: We spent our visit on the outdoor patio. There were plenty of tables, and it wasn't very busy. Even though the patio sits in the middle of a shopping center parking lot, it was surprisingly quiet and made for a pleasant place to enjoy dinner. There were a few families with young children nearby, but everyone was respectful, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Overall, La Cabaña is a good choice if you're looking for a traditional Mexican restaurant. Some dishes really stood out, while others were surprisingly bland or lacked attention to detail. I'm glad we stopped in, but based on this visit, it probably wouldn't be my first choice for Mexican food in the area.

I really wanted to like this place more…read more They have ample parking outside and a large restaurant and bar inside. There's also a sizeable patio for outdoor seating. They only have a small laminated menu at the table for drinks and no prices anywhere. I tried asking the server if there was a happy hour and it sounded like that's not something offered here. When I asked about the margaritas, I was told they started at $11 and beers were about $6 for pints and about $8 for 22 oz, so I ordered a 22oz Dos Equis (came out to $8.50). Unfortunately, it tasted off like the tap line was dirty. Our server was nice and friendly though. He was great. The menu prices differed with what they had online by about $2-3 for most of the dishes. Not a fan when they can't keep menus up to date. I opted for the street tacos which came out to $18.50. The pastor tacos were good though there was an odd bite or two of very chewy or tough pieces of pork. The rice and beans were not worth the calories. The chips and salsa were good and a sizeable portion but not enough to make up for the prices with everything else. You also find out at the end that they charge extra for using a card. You can pay in cash to get the extra amount taken off. The space had an overly sweet air freshener smell, almost like they're trying to cover something else up. Similar to other reviews, this place is okay but it's not worth the price point in my opinion.

I figured I was going to have a fish fry somewhere since it was a Friday in Wisconsin, so the pie, coupled with the fact I had never been to Nite Owls, led me to choose them that evening. I ordered a four piece cod fish fry with waffle fries, the white cheddar cheese curds, and a piece of key lime pie. There were very few pictures of food from Nite Owls online, so the fish fry and cheese curds were essentially ordered blindly. The description of the curds said they were white cheddar and lightly breaded. My guess was that meant they had the cornmeal-like kind of breading that white curds usually come with, which I'm not a fan of. I took a chance and ordered them anyway. Unfortunately, my guess was proven right. The curds were greasy on the bottom and not crispy/crunchy, which is typical for that kind of breading on cheese curds. Disappointing, but sadly not the most disappointing part of my meal. The waffle fries were good. Hard to screw up taking them out of a bag and frying them. They were seasoned, not plain, which was good. It's rare when I order a fish fry and don't like the fish. The fish from Nite Owls can be added to that short list. The breading was thick, somehow a little mushy inside, and I didn't care for the flavor at all. I tried to pick it off the fish and it did come off fairly easily, but the flavor of the breading had seeped into the cod and left me not wanting to eat much of that either. Ultimately I finished two of the four pieces without the breading and ended up throwing the other two away. The picture of the pie made it look like it was whipped throughout instead of pie filling with a whipped layer on top. It certainly had the flavor of key lime, but missed out on the substance without the pie filling layer. The gentleman working behind the bar was pleasant and helpful and my bill was reasonable for the amount of food I received. I hate giving them a bad review because the service doesn't deserve one, but the food was lacking in my opinion. If the fish had been tolerable enough to eat all four pieces, this would be a different story.

The bartender was friendly and conversational, yet kept his distance when not needed! The Old Fashioned menu was large, with unique spins on the classic Brandy-forward drink in this neck of the woods! I went with the Haunted Brothel, which had a lovely nuance of chamomile tea and ginger beer to give it a distinct taste! I'd absolutely go back to try another one of the many offerings on the menu!

They have a robust old fashioned menu--all made the Wisconsin style. We ordered the barrel aged old fashioned and asked if it could be made in the classic style (and specified without soda). Our server said, 'of course!' Annnnnd--then we got our drinks and they were both Wisconsin style. Not a huge deal and we did enjoy but a word of warning to those who favor a classic old fashioned with no wash--might have a hard time with that here. For our second cocktail, we got Manhattans which were better! For an appetizer, we were waffling between the spinach artichoke dip and the brussels sprouts. Our server recommended the spinach artichoke dip so we went with that. The dip was flavorful and the tortilla chips are house made. It was good! For my main, I got their eggplant parm, which was ample, saucy, and served on a bed of pasta. I definitely couldn't eat it all in one sitting. It was delicious. Our server was attentive and the prices are reasonable. Get to it!

Let me be very clear -- I come here for the BLOODIES! Not saying their food isn't good just that my…read moredrive from Milw. is based solely on the desire to order their delicious bloodies! With that said, if you're looking for a tasty bloody mary and are in the area or looking for a 'hidden gem' off the beaten path, head on over to Jimmy's in Jackson, WI! Their specialty bloody marys are available on Saturdays and Sundays and feature the Greek God as well as the Cheesehead. If you're looking for a tasty meal and bloody all in one then both of these will certainly satisfy! What are these two specialty bloodies you speak of? Well, the Cheesehead comes with all their regular fixings (lemon wedge, cheese cube, celery, summer sausage, pickle, mushroom, etc.) but then also comes with cheese curds, string cheese whips, and a FULL GRILLED CHEESE! The Greek God comes with their regular bloody mary fixings (lemon wedge, pickle, celery, summer sausage, cheese cube, mushroom, etc), an entire GYRO complete with onion, Kalamata olive, feta cheese, gyro meat, pita bread, etc. with a side of tzaziki sauce! Lastly, you're probably wondering, how's the mix?! Well, IMO, the bloody is robust in flavor (this is what I look for) and, while you'll be asked if you'd like your bloody mild or spicy, keep in mind you can order somewhere in the middle (for this robust glass of deliciousness, I think a medium spice is just perfect). All in all, Jimmy's is a spot I'll gladly take a little weekend drive for a bloody mary craving! One more thing--how are they handling the COVID pandemic? Well, for starters--their outdoor patio has at least 3 hand sanitizing stations, all staff are in mask both when serving indoor and outdoor diners. I sat outside last weekend and we were able to watch the Packer game on a flat screen (yep, there's a TV on the patio) and they cranked the heat lamps on for us...felt like we were just at the Game! HaHA! Indoors, customers are required to wear their masks indoors unless seated at their tables and eating/drinking. Thanks, Jimmy's! The pandemic is no joke and our COVID numbers are way too high in this state so, cheers to you for trying to help do your part amidst such unforeseen times. Fellow Yelpers, tip 'em well!
