Probably the worst service I have ever had in a restaurant, and it has happened on three different visits. It takes a long time for everything to happen: order taken, food delivered, check-back on food, bill presented. The place seems to be the victim of it's own success, due to the fact it's the only burger joint in La Mesa where you can also get a beer. The burgers are just ok, back-yard quality, but the glacier-like speed (or lack of it!) of the grill cook is enough to drive anyone batty. Also, the servers seem to divide their customers into two groups, locals and everyone else. If you don't live in the area and suffer frequently, the servers act with a curious form of aggressive indifference ("What's the problem? You burgers are cooking.") I have friends and family in La Mesa (great little town) and they won't even go there anymore. The service incompetence is just too frustrating after a while, even for locals. read more

My husband and I first walked into this place about 10 years ago, pretended to get a phone call and immediately walked out. It was dark, quiet and kinda creepy looking. But after having been told by a few different people that their burgers were delicious we decided to follow our mothers' advice and "not judge a book by its cover", dropped the kids off at Grandma's and went there for lunch. We sat on the patio outside around the outdoor fire pit and I ordered the Hickory Bacon burger with a side of onion rings and a tea. Hubby ordered the Bleu Cheese burger, fries and a soda. Their drinks are huge - which is a major + for my husband. The burger came and it was decent size. Nothing monstrous, but surely good size. And then we tasted it- Oh.My.Gosh. We are both born and raised in SD and we would agree that Johnny Bs serves the best burger in town. The sauce on the burgers is amazing. And the fries are thick and the onion-ring batter is wonderful. Nice to have a place where we can't take the kids... and on the other hand we don't make it in as often as we'd like *because* we can't take the kids. I highly recommend this restaurant. We stop by this restaurant on every trip to San Diego. Best burgers and appetizers. I recommend the bacon blue cheeseburger and jalapeño mozzarella sticks. My husband and I consider this our go to burger joint. The burgers are consistently delicious. No ups or downs, just consistent. I always order either the cheeseburger or the Patty melt. I'm drooling just thinking about them. My husband always get the bacon cheeseburger. We top it off with a large basket of fries and some Cali Creamin on Nitro. I have been craving for some real good burger, so I searched up a place to get me some tasty burger. Johnny B's was chosen! Parked, walked in. The appearance of the place was nice and clean, but there was no one to welcome their customer! I decided to just pick up a menu and was just going to look at it, then a man came by and say hello and offered me service. I told him I was looking for some good burger to eat and choice would he recommended. He gave me three of the most popular choice on the menu. I chose Lynne's Awesome Patty Melt on Rye, a small fries, and a peanut chocolate cookies ice cream sandwich? All for $13.11. Price was not too shabby, BUT each item sold separately, for ex: burger, fries, and drink do not come together. My experience? The food was OK. it is too original and greasy for me. The best part of the whole patty is the Rye bread. the bread was perfectly toasted, too much butter. The rest? Onion was good; the meat was too dry, no juice. There's nothing special about the fries. The cookie ice cream sandwich was delicious, real chewy though. My statement on Johnny B's? First and last experience. The End. read more

Solid burgers. Good selection of beers. Friendly staff. Nice patio. My only complaints are that they still allow smoking on their (mostly enclosed) patio and that there was one TINY tv on an NFL playoff game. It is my opinion they could draw a bigger crowd and have a full patio all the time, if they remedied those two issues. read more

I ate here today with friend and watched game on TV on back patio. We enjoyed two breakfast sandwiches and a few bloody Marys. Saw other posts complaining about their "high prices", however for me, the quality of the restaurant, food and service justify their slightly above average prices. Came in for the first time with my boyfriend. We sat at the bar and Mary helped us out. She was very friendly and gave us great menu recommendations. From time to time I peruse Yelp reviews for restaurants that I frequent on a regular basis and Johnny B's is one of them. I saw a review with the subject line "racist restaurant" and reviewed it. I am a Black man married to a White woman, and we have been coming to this restaurant "every week" for the last 3 years after discovering this venue. We have invited our friends and family to Johnny B's when celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and date night. We have gotten to know the staff on a professional basis as well as on a personal level, as well. We have personally been invited to private events held at this restaurant and have never experienced anything remotely depicting racism. Mary the Mixologist, is friendly as can be as is the rest of the staff, especially Jessica who is an outstanding hostess. Five star dining experience! read more

I contemplated ordering the "burger salad," but a friend who frequents this place regularly recommended the patty melt. A hamburger, onion, and swiss on toasted rye bread. I tried to make myself feel better by getting it on wheat bread. But they probably slathered that wheat bread with butter... but it was worth it! And the fries were amazing. They make it fresh when you order so it's always piping hot. They don't need bells and whistles and they sure as hell aren't too fancy to give you ketchup, which is the way a burger should be eaten. It is beer n wine only so don't expect a DRINKDRINK. The burgers aren't complicated but they have THE BEST taste! IDK what it is-maybe the BUTTERED BUN, insert joke here: Or just the sheer pureness of the burger. Whatever it is, rest assured it is fantastical!! You can get bacon, bleu cheese-haven't had it but heard it's awesome, and an array of other add-ons that just enhance the burger's flavors. They also do have brunch only on Sundays but get there early to avoid the crowd. I HIGHLY recommend the MIMOSAs, they'll put you on your a**! All I have to say is OMG!! This place is fantastic. I don't know what they do to their burgers but they have the most amazing taste and if I lived closer I would eat there everyday! Great lunch specials. The burger was good but not great. Just the normal burger, lettuce,tomatoes, onions. The fries were crisp but very little flavor. The service was just average, it took awhile for the server to come and get our order and it we had to find her to pay the bill because we were in a hurry. The food is okay nothing spectacular. The menu is limited to burgers, sandwiches and a few breakfast item. Went on a Thursday night it was pretty dead. Ordered the grilled ham and cheese with fries. Sandwich was tasty, but nothing special, fries were just normal ordinary tasting fries. They have Blue Moon on tap here so thats a plus. Aside from that my meal was just all right. They can probably do away with the menu here, both times i have eaten there the only thing i have seen the waitresses serve are hamburgers, fries and beer. Burgers are similar to "in and out" where the tomato, lettuce and onion are fresh. The only reason they are better here is because you can have it with a beer, otherwise in and out has them beat. But there are a whole lot of positives that will keep you coming back and these include cheap prices, waitresses that dont rush you when your watching a game. I forgot to mention tv' s everywhere.
