    Patio out back.

We were riding home from OB with friends when they took a detour and introduced us to The Luau. They love all things tiki and have been frequent flyers of The Luau since its inception. They are part of the OG regulars. While Becky and I had never even heard of it. We loved The Luau! What a great little hidden gem in La Mesa. Great bar inside with a menu full of tropical tiki themed drinks. Ice cold beer for me...and complimentary Goldfish snacks! Whaaaat? Yep! You read that right! The patio out back is really where it's at! The patio is rad. You gotta' check out The Luau!

We've heard about The Luau and have been wanting to try it for some time. Passed by tonight and made a U-turn to get to it. So glad we did. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with such warmth from Denae that we instantly felt like regulars. The vibe is just right--stylish without being pretentious, cozy but still buzzing with energy. But what really made the night was the bartender, Danae. Friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about her craft. Every drink she recommended was spot-on, and watching her work behind the bar was like watching an artist in action. She even took the time to chat and make sure we were enjoying everything. Service across the board was top-notch. You could tell she cared about creating a great experience. We never felt rushed, and every interaction was genuinely kind and thoughtful. We came in with high hopes, and this place exceeded every one of them. Already planning our next visit--this is definitely going to be a regular spot for us. Highly, highly recommend!

Came here to grab a drink and I wasn't alone. The place wasn't full, but there were other customers enjoying their drinks and conversations. They have a nice selection of cocktails to choose from. If you love tiki bars than this spot would satisfy. There is also an outside patio area, but it was a lot later in the night and it had been raining so inside it was the best move. Definitely a spot that I could see myself going back to again. Gives an almost a little bit of an upscale date spot.

We were out celebrating Sunday Funday a few weeks ago and happened to stop by about an hour after opening and it was completely empty-- my hubby and I had the place all to ourselves and it was such a great time ! Denae was bartending that afternoon and took great care of us-- let me tell yaaa about it ! If you've never been, The Luau is such a hidden gem in La Mesa . The exterior is actually so simple and modern,-- and the inside is even cuter ! The Hawaiian decor and tiki theme is such a vibe ! It's located right off of El Cajon Blvd and stands alone in front other shopping plazas . Parking is a little rough since you'd have to look for street of neighborhood parking, but we didn't have any trouble on a Sunday afternoon . Denae was so warm and welcomed us right away when we walked in ! The Luau is just a bar, so there's no food menu, but Denae gave us a bowl of goldfish to snack on which was nice ! Here's what we got for drinks ! Mai Tai: Strong, delicious, and exactly what a mai tai should look\taste like ! Painkiller: So fun and even comes with a souvenir back scratcher you can take home lol Blue Hawaiian: This is a creeeper, but so good ! Overall, The Luau is a solid, head over there to grab a tropical drink if you're missing the islands . Or maybe check out their karaoke nights on the weekends if you're looking for a fun night out ! (They even have board games you can borrow to play while you're there) .

Took my gf here for a surprise and she was so stoked. She loved the decor and ambiance of the place. We had the pleasure of being served by Jonah. This dude knew his stuff and answered any questions we had. He made us 4 different drinks in total and all were so good. Not to mention he kept the coconut shell constantly full of complimentary goldfish and pretzels. He also let us know that they got karaoke there (I think Thursday-Saturday)! Shoutout to Jonah and the Luau for making our first visit there a memorable one. It definitely won't be our last time being there

The best Mai Tai, period Ok, it's a bar, but the staff takes such great care of you; I felt like a local. I've visited now three times and can we talk about consistency. Perfect. Tony makes you feel at home

Jonah, Carter, Tony, Sterling, Denae, Spencer and Brett are the most respectful servers I have ever experienced at a bar! Jonah always brings the best vibes and Carter always makes sure I'm doing well! Favorite bar of El Cajon! Couldn't ask for more!

We've been to The Luau several times now and it's become one of our favorite go-to spots in San Diego! The tropical vibes, fun cocktails, and friendly staff keep us coming back. On our most recent visit, my boyfriend, our friend, and I came in early in the evening when it was quieter, and we pretty much had the place to ourselves and honestly, it was a blast. Denae was amazing! Tony came in toward the end of our visit and brought such great energy. Super welcoming, fun to chat with, and totally made us feel like VIPs. We sampled all kinds of cocktails (the menu is creative and everything tastes fresh and tropical), and they didn't miss a beat. Whether you're with a group or just stopping in for a quick drink, the team here knows how to create a good time. Huge thanks to Denae and Tony -- we'll definitely be back again soon!

This bar is incredible! I had a fun time here! I wanted to check out local bars in La Mesa and my friend suggested The Luau. The bartenders were Tony and John. Tony handed us some snacks: Goldfish and pretzels! What a treat! I had a Virgin Pina Colada. There was one drink that had a wooden back scratcher! The ambiance was warm and inviting. There was also a karaoke setup! Can't wait to come back!!!!

Shailey took great care of us. She was super helpful with drink recommendations, as well as food recommendations for nearby taco shops. She was also very funny and sassy. A gem for sure. We were on a parents night out double date and this place was absolutely perfect. The ambience here is fantastic and given its random location it is quite the oasis. You walk off the street and are transported to tiki land. The patio is so inviting and relaxing that it's a great place to end up for the evening, not just start at. Also, very clean bathrooms. The drink menu is extensive and everything looked good, which is not always the case to me. The pretzels and goldfish to snack on are perfect. We loved all our drinks (can't remember which were which now, sorry. But I don't think you can really go wrong!) and every part of our experience here and can't wait to go back!

Make a reservation if you know this is your destination. They have some spot on Tiki decor and the staff here is really friendly, happy to share their favorite drinks, or make suggestions based on your likes. If fruity drinks are not your jam... what are you doing in a Tiki Bar!! No really, they have great options for on the rocks or straight as well as ordering your favorite cocktail or beer. They have a ton of options, all sorts of alcohol bases depending on what your vice is, they also have non-alcoholic drinks for those so inclined. Hard to pass on a Mai Tai or a Zombie to start your evening off. lately I have been enjoying the Eastern Sour which is their take on a whiskey sour. It's always fun when someone orders a bowl and the room shakes and the lights flash with thunder and lightning adding a bit of excitement for first timers. Just to recap: Don't get mad if you have to wait and did not make a reservation. While they have lots of options, most drinks and all specialties are Tiki Drinks. Tiki drinks can be strong, mind yourself. If a place like this is not your vibe, that is fine, head back into Craft & Commerce, make room for others who are waiting to get in, just have fun!

If you're not a regular, be careful, because apparently all it takes is one drunk friend of the staff making up a story to get you kicked out. While visiting San Diego with friends, we came here after hearing so many great things. There was a short wait, which was fine. The four of us were seated at a small standing table, also fine. Behind us were two guys drinking at the standing bar. One of them bumped into my friend and then stroked her arm while apologizing. She was visibly uncomfortable, so I told her to switch places with me. The guy immediately said, "We're gay, so you don't have to worry," then turned to his friend and said, "Now he looks so stupid and embarrassing." I told him, "I don't think it's embarrassing to make sure your friends are comfortable," then turned back around. I didn't argue with him, insult him, or continue the conversation. I thought that was the end of it. A few minutes later, the manager came over and told us we had made comments that made other patrons uncomfortable and asked us to leave. We had already paid for our drinks and were still waiting for them. My friend followed the manager to ask what was going on, and I joined shortly after. The person complaining was, of course, the same guy who had bumped into her. He was clearly drunk and started rambling about how we had made homophobic comments toward him and his friend. This was especially ridiculous considering the friend I switched places with was there with her girlfriend. We calmly explained exactly what happened. The manager did not care. There was no real attempt to hear our side, ask questions, or figure out what actually happened. The decision had clearly already been made. While we were speaking to the manager, the guy who complained was cheerfully talking with one of the bartenders, receiving a to-go meal, and greeting them cheek to cheek. He very obviously appeared to know the staff. So that seems to be how things work here: a drunk regular or friend of the staff can make up whatever story he wants, and management will throw out an entire group of paying customers without even pretending to investigate. They refunded the drinks, which was the bare minimum. The ambience was nice, but that means absolutely nothing when the staff handles customers this poorly. Awful management, blatant favoritism, and easily the worst service I have ever experienced. I would never come back, and I would strongly warn anyone who isn't already friends with the staff to stay away.

I came here again last night with friends and began to check in for our reservation with the bartender (the same bartender who had let me in the last time I was here). He said store policy is that they have to be able to feel the imprint on your license's signature, which even he admitted that he could, but it was too faded so he wouldn't let me in. I showed him matching credit cards, Costco membership, and CA DMV mobile drivers license, but he still refused and pleaded ignorance. He gave me my driver's license back and said I'm lucky because he normally keeps fakes (thanks for the empty threat). In reality, he knew my license was legitimate and didn't want to have the cops called on him. This place really needs to update their policies and train their staff better on how to identify legitimate IDs. I'm definitely not gong to bother coming here again and will make sure I recommend others not to come here.

Then there's a door where you press a button, and it opens to bring you into the restaurant/bar. Inside, there's a mix of tables and bar seating, and they serve food in addition to having an extensive cocktail menu. The drink menu was definitely the highlight for me. There were so many creative and unique cocktails that really stood out. I'm usually not a huge cocktail person because I don't like overly sweet drinks, and it can be surprisingly difficult to find cocktails that are both original and sophisticated enough to actually sip and enjoy. They definitely nailed that here. I tried several: *Kasato Maru: This was so smooth and absolutely delicious. By far my favorite. You could really pick up the St. Germain elderflower and pear, and the flavors worked beautifully together. Definitely one of my favorites. *Sunomono: This was more liquor-forward, but still incredibly smooth. Definitely a good choice if you want something that lets the spirits shine. *Je Ju: Unfortunately, this one wasn't for me. It had a really unusual flavor that just didn't work with my palate, and my friend wasn't a fan either. I'm usually not one to send a drink back, but the staff was fantastic about it. They happily took it back and made me a completely different cocktail. *Softly Spoken: My friend ordered this one, and it came in a glass filled with small ice cubes. I tried it and thought it was really good, but it wasn't quite my personal preference. It definitely had more of a fruity flavor profile. The food looked absolutely amazing although we didn't eat here this time. There are still so many cocktails on the menu that I want to try so I'll definitely need to come back. The atmosphere is dimly lit, intimate, and full of character. It has that cool, moody feel that makes you want to sit back, sip a cocktail, and stay awhile. And the service was phenomenal from start to finish. Overall, this was such a fun experience. Great atmosphere, creative cocktails, excellent service, and plenty more on the menu I still want to try.
