    Sunday Brunch!
    Jennifer N.

Bali Hai Brunch 9:45-1:45 review. Best to make a reservation, just in case, either way there is a 5% surcharge at the end of your bill. There is a very large parking area, so no need to worry about parking. Service was good. The view of the water outside is beautiful! There was a nice selection of seafood: Cold crab legs, cocktail sauce & shrimp, smoked salmon + many island style foods, but also Prime rib, Yakisoba, pho, and an omelette station. Overall though food was decent, not amazing. You are given a glass of champagne, and you can add orange, pineapple, or cranberry juice to it. Or they also offer Apple cider, tea, and coffee. You are not allowed to order anything from the regular menu during the brunch buffet.

The deadliest mai tai in the world.
    Craig W.

The mai tai here is famous or maybe even infamous, however you choose to think of it. (Incidentally, "infamous" does NOT mean "very famous.") It is also ridiculously strong. If you light a match near it, it could explode. This restaurant just may have the best view of any place in San Diego. I have been here probably a hundred times and it never fails to impress me. It's simply wonderful. I don't love the dinner menu but I enjoy their coconut shrimp, which they do well. If you don't want to commit to a full dinner, go for the pu pu small bites in the lounge. It's kid friendly and sometimes there is live music. You can get a small portion of coconut shrimp as an appetizer in the lounge. The only bummer about sitting in the lounge is there is no bay view. You could do a lot worse than some coconut shrimp, a truly deadly mai tai, and an amazing view.

This place was fun to visit. Honestly, I would have probablyhad more fun sitting at the bar, having a drink, and listening to the music. Of course I went for the mai tai but when I was warned about how it was made, I decided against it. Pure alcohol! Apparentlyl that is the way it is supposed to be made. ??? I ended up with some other drink. I guess, being tiki, I expected it to be amazing, but it was typical. The food was good but it's something I could have ordered at other restaurants. I'm not saying that it wasn't good, but it just wasn't outstanding. I will bring friends here when in town just because I do feel they should check it out. I enjoyed looking out the window and watching the boats coming in from whale watching or the kayers paddling. I kind of wished I had my kayak. I would have been in the water. Server was pleasant. Visit this place at least once so you can say you did it. Maybe even try the Mai Tai. ........ v .. .....

Pretty Christmas lights, view of the front
    Margaret A.

I always look forward to coming here. The view of the bay is spectacular, especially if you arrive near sunset. This visit I ordered the Ahi tuna dinner with their famous Mai Tai. I usually order a different drink, however it being the Christmas season, I thought 'what the heck'! It was fine as long as I sipped it really slow, each sip felt like a shot of alcohol. Overall it was a really nice dinner, great ambiance with a live singer across from the bar area and impeccable service as usual. The lobby had a very pretty Christmas tree and the outside area included many colored lights. A great way to celebrate Christmas!

Always enjoy my time and meal here. Food tonight was excellent! My table had the short ribs, gone! Tuna, gone! And I had the salmon with strawberries, who knew? Gone! This might be the Mai Tai talking.

This was my first time here and I was pleasantly surprised. We were there on December 23rd for my Auntie's Surprise Birthday Party. We had the entire downstairs of the restaurant. Venue: Fantastic view from the downstairs I can only imagine the view upstairs. The tables had been placed along the windows. It was fairly cloudy but still beautiful. This allowed for casual mingling both inside and out. The staff were amazing and so so professional. We also met the owner who said that his family has owned the restaurant for 30+ years. Gave us a little history. Food: I apologize but I apparently didn't take any pictures of the food. However, some was good, some not so much. Of course being from Hawaii, I have different expectations of "Polynesian" food. There was Toss Salad, Hawaiian rolls, Island style macaroni salad, Rice, Kalua Pig & cabbage, Teriyaki chicken, and Mahi with a cream sauce. There might have been something else but I dont remember. For a buffet, it was pretty good. Best thing for me was the chicken. The fish was a little dry though. There was a cute area outside that we took a group photo. One of the wait staff took a picture from the 2nd floor in order to make us fit. Overall would highly recommend for a small event like ours.

Came here for date night for our anniversary. Not sure if that's why we got a table right by the window but HIGHLY recommend asking for that whenever you make your reservation. Please note they strictly don't start seating until 5. Before that it's open seating near the entrance. Okay let's get into the drinks first. Everyone raved about drinks here. They notoriously have the "strongest drink in San Diego." All I have to say is it was the strongest drink I've ever had in my life and just writing this is making my face do the sour-face "I remember my first shot" experience. It's their Mai Tai and it can be shared in a large punch bowl or can be split for two. Please note they limit it to two per person although I couldn't imagine drinking two solo. Other drinks we got were the Planter's Punch (highly recommend for people wanting fruity-sweet), the Big B's Bri-to (recommend for pineapple and sour lovers), and the Paralyzing Puffer Fish (recommend for sweet and sour). Now onto the food that actually kind of blew us away. We started off with the Ali'i Tasting For Two. You get two of everything: coconut shrimp, tuna poke, spinach lumpia, short ribs, and beef skewers. HIGHLY recommend. My personal favorite was the lumpia and the ribs but my husband enjoyed the shrimp. As for our main dishes I got the Korean Fried Chicken. It was slightly dry but the flavor was wonderful. Our waiter recommended putting the sauce normally used for the coconut shrimp on my side of rice and it really leveled it up. We also got the Crispy Ahi Tuna which was PHENOMENAL. All of their fish was terribly tasty. We also got a side of the Chinese garlic noodles which were 15/10. Special shout out to Nadeem who was our server. Just a really thoughtful person who kept checking in on us consistently to ensure we were having a great time but more importantly a wonderful experience. He was attentive, fast, and really kind. Will be asking for him exclusively when we return. I cannot comment on parking as we walked there (we parked down the street to do a stroll prior). This is the perfect place for a date, a place to have some drinks, or a must-go for a really lovely view of downtown. PS you can pay extra and take home signature tiki mugs/glasses with your drinks!

Will was our server and he was great!!! The food portions were SO small... especially for the price... it was ok tasting.

This is one of my favorite places to eat when on Shelter Island. I've been here many times and its always hits all the boxes. Located on the picturesque coast with a million dollar view of the San Diego city and skyline. The appetizers are good and take the place of a meal. Ribs, shrimp or calamari its all good. Recently we came here as a party of 12 on Thanksgiving with a reservation. Im so glad we had a reservation due to being crazy busy. They got us in on time. The food on the buffet was really good. They had everything plus some faves like Kailua pig and lobster ravioli. They never ran out of anything. It's a pretty big place, didn't realize how big til I dined on the second floor. Very nice patio seating and great views+

Had a wonderful birthday celebration at Bali Hai Restaurant. Mario, our server, was great. Mario took really good care of us. The food was amazing, the restaurant with the beautiful water view really set the mood for a great evening. Great food, great location, great atmosphere.

The first thing I notice about this place is that there is ample parking. No stress needed to search to find parking !! The ambiance is nice here. Beautiful view at any angle. We tried their Sunday Brunch Buffet . We were seated by the window with such a beautiful view of the water! Kevin was our server and he was very kind. There was a lot of food to choose from like various meats, carving station and sea food. Not too many vegetable dishes. There was also an omlet station and a lot of desserts to choose from. The food was okay. The meat was a little dry possibly due to sitting out for a while. I recommend that if you come here for brunch, be sure to come hungry!!!

They weren't kidding about the drinks. There really is no juice in the mai tai. I had to mix a little POG into my mai tai to make it drinkable for me. Came here with colleagues on a weekday afternoon while visiting San Diego with a reservation. We were seated in ten minutes or so since we were a little early. We all ordered something off the lunch menu. Started with the coconut shrimp to share. Delicious. The kalua pork lunch plate was tasty with a unique take on mac salad. I'm just used to what I grew up with and homemade but appreciate that everyone has their own recipe. The salad was also tasty and filling.

Came on a Monday night around 6pm. There was 5 of us in our party. I took a poll at the end of the night to see how everyone felt about the experience. I rated it a 2 star. Two people rated it 3 stars. One person a 3.5 and one person a 4. We all generally ranked the food the same... 2.5 stars, the view, 5 stars, parking 5 stars, service, 4 stars but where we differed was the drinks, the intangibles, and the energy of the place. Food for me was extremely disappointing, especially at the price point. We all shared and the side dish of the Brussels sprouts was our universal favorite. Side dishes should not be the best part of the meal in my opinion. What made it great was that it's enough for two people easily, it was charred perfectly and had cheese, bacon, and balsamic. It was priced at 9 bucks. Second best dish was the 14 oz. wok fried bass The dish was corvina seabass, ponzu, and szechuan style vegetables. From the plating to the presentation to the taste, it's hard to find anything to complain about. With the flavors and how filling it was, the price of 44 dollars was on point. Third best dish was the side dish of the black bean chinese broccoli that was 8 dollars. After that, there was such a big drop off that I wouldn't really recommend anything else from what we had. The roasted whole fish was a Mediterranean bass and had coconut melange, and stir fried curry vegetables. Everything on the plate was a bit dry and the seasoning just wasn't there. Everyone at the table wasn't impressed. Especially given it was market priced. The crispy pork belly was the dish I was most looking forward to and at $30 I was ready for it to be great. It was crispy. Not crunchy. It was dished up with spiced lemon basmati rice, pickled pepper & onion, black vinegar & balsamic jam. None of it really stood out. The pan seared scallops at $40 which had garlic polenta, kombu and charred scallion miso, and tomato-basil salad was a split between being underwhelming (as in the description sounded better than what it actually came out to be) and middle of the pack. It's a pretty dish to look at and if you want something heavier than a salad but lighter than some of the other meals, I would suggest this. The seared salmon was on the cheaper side. It was 30 bucks and it had a chili-pineapple glaze, lemon-basil risotto, and strawberry relish. We all liked the flavors. And thought it was a unique combination. The outer crust of the salmon could have been seared a touch longer. The glaze needed more heat. We started the day with appetizers. We got the ali'i tasting for $28 which was worth it. It came with coconut shrimp, bali hai tuna poke, spinach lumpia, beef skewers, firecracker ribs. Ribs were amazing. We also got the spinach cream cheese lumpia which came with passion orange guava sweet and sour. It was $12. We ended the day with two desserts - Lemon Mousse Cake which had blueberry lemon curd, lemon lavender truffle, and blueberry muffin ice cream and the White Chocolate Cheesecake (GF) which had Raspberry sauce and Amaretti cookie. Both were fine. Both were 12 dollars. The blueberry muffin ice cream was delightful. The lemon cake in general was superior because each bite, you tasted something different. We were served by Diego. And nothing but praise for him. He was quick. He was fun to be around. He was ready with all the answers to our questions. He was just an overall great person to be around. The view was immaculate. And the parking situation is super easy. Spaces for dayssss. Usually I would recommend you coming here to try for yourself or even consider coming back here again but I think with the amount I tasted here, I can safely say that while great for our occasion and for our of town visitors. I wouldn't recommend it if you're local. I think other places serve more impressive food.

Ask the Community - Bali Hai Restaurant

We're doing Sunday brunch. Can we order additional items from their regular menu as we are willing to pay for the additional cost/price?

You cannot order anything off the regular menu on Sunday brunch time because they have all of the stations that are set up and it's a one price for that service. Of course any drinks ordered from the bar is an additional charge.

Is there any vegan options here?

Vegan menu items are not listed but I believe you can get sweet n sour tofu and edamame and rice or noodles with veggies and pineapple as well as salads. I would call to see what they could make for you that's not on the menu. They have avocado and… Read more

    Are you still serving outside?

Yes but there's not that many tables.

    Are mask required?

Nope! You can wear one if you want (but you might be the only one!)

Do I need to make an reservation for Sunday brunch ? And Does drinks included?

    Yes

Do they take reservations for parties with over 6 guests if you call to reserve instead of reserve online? When trying to reserve on OpenTable, 6 was the maximum.

With a party that large you should call in and directly speak to the hostess there at the Bali Hai. They will accommodate you! Ask for Hannah - she's the best!!

Do they serve the full menu at the bar? There's only 2 of us and we just want pupus. Hate to take up a whole table.

Yes. The whole place is essentially a bar, and most of the menu is appetizers, you can order any of them at any seat.

Do you need to have a reservation for dinner?

It's highly recommended. Especially if you are familiar with the layout and you want a very specific table seat & view. Although I've had success sometimes walking in you'll be taking a chance.

Are dogs allowed in the outdoor dining area during the Sunday brunch buffet?

Only service animals are allowed in our restaurant dining areas inside or out.

For the Sunday brunch buffet, how is it served? Are there any changes made in light of COVID restrictions, or is it the same (self-serve, everyone using the same serving utensils) as buffets were pre-COVID?

Served the same way except it costs more and no longer includes drinks or mimosas. The selection has been cut down significantly (see recent reviews by several people).

Do they provide nutritional information somewhere?

No. If they did, no one would be ordering Eggs Benedict unless they don't give a hoot (which is the case with most people who order it)

Are there plans to start the Sunday Brunch Buffet back up?

It's already been up & running - reservations are a must!!

    Is dining currently all outside?

No, they have both indoor and outdoor dining. Make a reservation so you can ensure you have nice views.

Is Sunday brunch buffet still happening?

Aloha Aileen, Yes, we still have brunch every Sunday from 10am to 2:30pm. However, it is no longer a… Read more

    Do they sell mugs here?

Yes! And they are really cool.

Are dogs allowed now that it's all outdoor seating?

Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on our outdoor dining patio.

Is there a price and menu for Easter Brunch 2020?

    I heard it's 9am to 2:00pm Adults $55, children 6-12 $20, kids 5 & under free

Hi, are there vegan options for food and drink? Thanks

There are a few options but do ask your server for more or to make modifications to existing menu items. Have fun!!

Hi there I'm planning a 40th birthday brunch. I plan on having about 60 adults for brunch. Can you accommodate that number? Who should I connect with to plan?

I knew it was a speakeasy but he did not. I was trying to double-check on my phone that Craft & Commerce was the right restaurant its housed in (yes) when he tried to jet set off down the block "to keep looking" rather than listen to me. I yelled, "MOTHER!" by accident and then he did truly leave me hahaha. He resurfaced a few minutes later, and then we walked in. It was 5:15 at the time, so 15 minutes after opening. I had NO IDEA how popular this spot was, nor anything about its nation-wide reputation. I actually didn't know that until two days ago when a Yelp-friend at home here in Richmond, Virginia, exclaimed excitedly when I told her we stopped in. The host who greeted us was kind, informed us there had been a line to get in that day, but that they had one barrel left; we jumped on it of course. It was happy hour, so the first cocktail I ordered was dirt cheap at $9. It was the Imperial Hawaiian with gin, rum, lemon, pineapple, and orgeat. I really shouldn't have ordered a second drink after that one, but I did have the classic Saturn later on in the night and it was absurdly good! Definitely my favorite of the two. The moody tiki vibe was so cool and fun. They even had frogs you could play on the tables. We had some fun neighbors too, which livened up the experience even more. We had a great time and both walked out heavily buzzed. We were asleep by 8 that night, but it was worth it!

The menu is mostly rum drinks since this is a rum bar however since I'm not the biggest fan I ordered the only thing with tequila on the menu. My drink was actually really good, it was refreshing, not too sweet or strong at all. I just wish there would be more variety.

He spent a long time inspecting my CA REAL ID before going into the back. He returned and said he can't let me in since he doesn't trust my ID. He said store policy is that they have to be able to feel the imprint on your license's signature, which even he admitted that he could, but it was too faded so he wouldn't let me in. I showed him matching credit cards, Costco membership, and CA DMV mobile drivers license, but he still refused and pleaded ignorance. He gave me my driver's license back and said I'm lucky because he normally keeps fakes (thanks for the empty threat). In reality, he knew my license was legitimate and didn't want to have the cops called on him. This place really needs to update their policies and train their staff better on how to identify legitimate IDs. I'm definitely not gong to bother coming here again and will make sure I recommend others not to come here.

The sushi was great and arrived fairly quick. Our beers were cold and they have a decent selection. For 6 rolls (Baby shark, kraken, yellow flash, bruce lee, and lemon cilantro - Fireball roll not in picture) and 3 drinks our bill was $120, which is reasonable and we were all full when we left.

They also had a patio and that worked since we had our pup with us. Our server was really sweet and attentive. We ordered a few rolls and the shrimp tempura. The tempura was good, though the batter was a bit different. It was more crispy than light. So again, not bad just different. We ordered three rolls: lemon cilantro, point break and west coast. All were good. The lemon cilantro was yummy but one slice didn't have any salmon on top. Not a huge deal but all pieces should have fish on it. The other two were good as well. I ordered the spicy seafood udon to go. I ate it later and it was yummy. Nice seafood in it and I asked for mild spice and it seemed they certainly tried. The sushi rolls were good but kind of average. The soup was good as I really like udon. The place was certainly busy and the prices were good. We would probably return if we were in the area.
