Used YELP moving service search and got back a few quotes. JVA was the best quote option for what we needed and communications was clear from start to finish. We had three movers + JVA truck, they were polite, fast, and efficient (also in JVA uniforms). Fresh off a successful move with Academy Movers I called them to help move a bulky desk upstairs. The team of three showed up on time and made a first attempt to move the desk up a flight of stairs. It was too big to maneuver well. So they did some problem-solving, had the tools like a drill and took a few pieces off the desk, which made handling it a lot easier. They got it upstairs and put the desk back together as if nothing had happened. I was super impressed that they took time out to consider how to solve the problem. John had the tools and the job was done. They were prepared. They were organized. They were resourceful. I was very happy. Shawnte' was on the stairs (more than one set) assigned the worst job on the crew. He reminded me of boot camp when a private has been given pushups and the private answers back.... "Thank you drill sergeant, may I have another?" His energy never faultered. Luka was assigned to the trailer and nothing moved! Ricky and Juan were awesome. My daughter left her extra cochlear implants and instead of just packing, they brought them to me. They're too precious to just be put in a box. We had moved 300 miles to get here. Now we were moving just 10 miles locally. Our relocation has been tough: getting here, finding and 'fixing' a fixer upper took 16 months. That required a lot of vendors who weren't all that great. We needed help with the big and heavy stuff for this local move. I was so happy to find Academy, not only for their reasonable price. I really liked that Academy was non profit and employs people who have gone through a meaningful life-changing program. This meant, to me, that they were not only doing this - like other companies - for profit (and who were overpriced). I felt like we would be contributing to a higher purpose. Very professional team! I was in a situation where I was leaving a very horrible relationship. They knew nothing about it. But I had all my belongings packed and ready to go. They were clean cut, polite, and extremely strong! We had them pack our 16' Pod and move the rest of our furniture into the garage for donation pick up. They never even used a hand truck! The packing in our Pod was perfect...utilizing every square inch by packing to the roof of the Pod. I can't recommend them enough. Their rate was $175/hour and well worth it. We had a large move with some every fragile items. They sent us two trucks and four team members to help with our move. I had recently had a medical emergency and so was not fully prepared for the move. They were very kind and stepped in to help finish packing as well They were fast workers and took great care of our things. I requested quotes from a few different companies, before deciding on John Volken. Other companies will offer you 2 movers, and the clock starts from the time they leave the office to the time they get back. Some will even double the rate as they drive from your current apartment to your new one. Not these guys. JVA Movers stood out because first - they gave the same hourly rate but for 3 movers. And they clarified that they don't double rates between locations, and the clock stops once the last box is moved into your new spot. They don't charge for their time to drive home. These guys were fast, careful, clean, and respectful from start to finish. They called the morning of to confirm they were heading over, called when they had arrived, and the whole job was finished within I think 4 hours and cost me less than what they had quoted me for an average job of my size. 10/10 would recommend. Positives: They were very fast, friendly, prompt, and cheap. Negatives: They didn't make any effort to protect either residence or any furniture. They frequently bumped furniture into walls and doorframes leaving marks and damage. When asked specifically to take extra care with 2 antiques both pieces still ended up with fresh scratches. When given advice on the best way to move a certain piece they tried doing it their own way first which resulted in a mess and marred surfaces, then did it the suggested way since that's the only way that would work. A small note on professionalism: they were badmouthing previous customers while working. Summary: If you don't value your stuff or the residences then they are a great value and very fast. If you want things to get from A to B in the same condition they started I'd recommend paying more for better service elsewhere or wrapping all your furniture in the heavy blankets movers usually use. read more

So grateful to Matt, Will, Quinn, Chris, and whomever else is behind the scenes at John Volken Academy Movers. Moving from Baltimore to Seattle was stressful enough, when we learned from the City of Kirkland Public Works that we could not have our pods delivered, we were up a creek. Luckily JVAM responded quickly and confidently that they could unpack our household goods from the pods at the shipping terminal and deliver them to our condo. I appreciated their straight-forward billing (per hour, all the packing and tape and stuff included) and they sent three people rather than two. The logistics team was friendly and flexible. The movers, too, were friendly and professional. They jumped through the various hoops our condo HOA set up, and managed our 8-foot couch into our 1-bedroom apartment without complaint. I contemplated writing this review, but I felt I need to warn others in case something like this happens again. During our move, our leather couch seam had ripped. We didn't make a big deal since the boys worked hard (and accidents happen during a move) and we figured we would resolve it through insurance. We even ordered pizza for the boys and tipped them at the end. When we brought it up to Cameron (manager), he gave us two options- insurance will pay us $170.40 or they will have someone repair the seam. We bought the couch for $3700+tax, so we felt repairing it was the better option. He told us they work with a repairman name Boku. After seeing pics of the damage, Boku advised us that he can re-stitch the couch but it will not be perfect. He also said that if anyone saw the couch, they would not know it's been repaired. Boku came out on scheduled day and went right to work. I was in the same room with him and he did not say anything until he was finished. Imagine my surprise when I walked across the room and saw that he had sloppily glued the seams instead of re-stitching (see pics). He told me this was the only option. When I asked him why he didn't consult with me, he refused to speak to me further and told me to take it up with Cameron since they hired him. I spoke to Cameron and sent him pics of the repair. He was also surprised that the seams had been glued and told me he was going to get back to me. After 9 days, Cameron emailed me saying there was nothing else they can do and we can reach out to the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission for further review. I was misled into thinking our couch was going to be re-stitched and it was not. Had I known they were simply going to glue the seams, I would've refused the repair. Very disappointed at their lack of responsibility for someone they chose to do the repair. Moral of the story- if there is damage, do not have them fix it and go through insurance. read more

The moving team from John Volken Academy just did an incredible job for me. First, I stopped in the furniture store late Friday afternoon to ask about their moving services. They had an opening that Monday. The team was a great bunch of guys that worked their tails off which is a testament to the work the Academy does. In addition to some of my household items, they moved a large hot tub, a pod type massage chair, a health club duty Precor elliptical, 2 safes plus a few other stupid heavy items.
