Had to break my apartment lease to relocate for work. I was dreading moving- it's always such a pain... but this was easily the smoothest move I've ever experienced! The JVA moving crew were meticulous in packing our belongings- it was dumping rain and they wrapped just about everything we owned to ensure it did not get wet; we didn't even have to ask, they just did their thing! And FAST. The load and unload time was extremely impressive, and the men who worked on our move- Tom, Cale, and Tyler, were so respectful and considerate- totally went above and beyond. That required a lot of vendors who weren't all that great. We needed help with the big and heavy stuff for this local move. I was so happy to find Academy, not only for their reasonable price. I really liked that Academy was non profit and employs people who have gone through a meaningful life-changing program. This meant, to me, that they were not only doing this - like other companies - for profit (and who were overpriced). I felt like we would be contributing to a higher purpose. The quote was good, they were responsive, communication was clear, and the guys were super nice. They were on time, polite, efficient, and careful. I was happy to meet the gentleman I had actually spoken with on the phone (thank you Clark)! They were super with certain fragile (and heavy) pieces. And, they solved a problem with moving my large glass-top desk (I should have thought of that!), and had tools in their truck. They thoughtfully asked if the larger pieces were placed in just the right spot. Used YELP moving service search and got back a few quotes. JVA was the best quote option for what we needed and communications was clear from start to finish. We had three movers + JVA truck, they were polite, fast, and efficient (also in JVA uniforms). After the move, the JVA admin reached out for any concerns we may have, no concerns and definitely will use JVA in the future. Three movers + JVA truck, ~3hrs, total costs ~$750 (including tips). Largest items were flat screen tv, bed/mattress, desk/chairs. The movers help disassemble/reassemble the bed/frames. The truck was big so the rest of the furnitures was moved as is. Fresh off a successful move with Academy Movers I called them to help move a bulky desk upstairs. The team of three showed up on time and made a first attempt to move the desk up a flight of stairs. It was too big to maneuver well. So they did some problem-solving, had the tools like a drill and took a few pieces off the desk, which made handling it a lot easier. They got it upstairs and put the desk back together as if nothing had happened. I was super impressed that they took time out to consider how to solve the problem. John had the tools and the job was done. They were prepared. They were organized. They were resourceful. I was very happy. We had sudden water damage and needed to move most of our belongings into a pod in our driveway, Volken Academy responded quickly to my request for a quote and were able to get us scheduled on very short notice. The three men who came to move our belongings were very nice and incredibly efficient - they moved our entire living room, family room, office and guest bedroom furniture seamlessly fitting it into our somewhat small pod in under 2 hours. Best moving experience EVER! I could rave about this moving company all day. A few things to highlight: 1. Very professional. Scheduling was easy. They were straightforward with price, and accommodating with the requested time/date. They also called the week before, and the day before, to make sure the plan was still set and to see if we had any questions. 2. They were so fast, careful, and efficient!!! I was amazed by their work in moving us out of a 4-story townhouse and into our new home. They look care with all of our items, wrapped everything for protection, and moved things so quickly but carefully as to not bump any walls or damage anything. They also offered to take shoes off with each trip in and out of the house to protect the carpet. They were above and beyond incredible. So strong too!!! 3. Three very nice men helped us move. Wow! The best packing experience I've ever had. Three young men came on time to pack the Pod we had parked in our driveway. They were clean cut, polite, and extremely strong! We had them pack our 16' Pod and move the rest of our furniture into the garage for donation pick up. They never even used a hand truck! The packing in our Pod was perfect...utilizing every square inch by packing to the roof of the Pod. I can't recommend them enough. Their rate was $175/hour and well worth it. We'll be using them again when we need to unpack our Pod. read more

I requested quotes from a few different companies, before deciding on John Volken. Other companies will offer you 2 movers, and the clock starts from the time they leave the office to the time they get back. Some will even double the rate as they drive from your current apartment to your new one. Not these guys. JVA Movers stood out because first - they gave the same hourly rate but for 3 movers. And they clarified that they don't double rates between locations, and the clock stops once the last box is moved into your new spot. They don't charge for their time to drive home. These guys were fast, careful, clean, and respectful from start to finish. They called the morning of to confirm they were heading over, called when they had arrived, and the whole job was finished within I think 4 hours and cost me less than what they had quoted me for an average job of my size. 10/10 would recommend. The moving team from John Volken Academy just did an incredible job for me. First, I stopped in the furniture store late Friday afternoon to ask about their moving services. They had an opening that Monday. The team was a great bunch of guys that worked their tails off which is a testament to the work the Academy does. In addition to some of my household items, they moved a large hot tub, a pod type massage chair, a health club duty Precor elliptical, 2 safes plus a few other stupid heavy items. Positives: They were very fast, friendly, prompt, and cheap. Negatives: They didn't make any effort to protect either residence or any furniture. They frequently bumped furniture into walls and doorframes leaving marks and damage. When asked specifically to take extra care with 2 antiques both pieces still ended up with fresh scratches. When given advice on the best way to move a certain piece they tried doing it their own way first which resulted in a mess and marred surfaces, then did it the suggested way since that's the only way that would work. A small note on professionalism: they were badmouthing previous customers while working. Summary: If you don't value your stuff or the residences then they are a great value and very fast. If you want things to get from A to B in the same condition they started I'd recommend paying more for better service elsewhere or wrapping all your furniture in the heavy blankets movers usually use. read more

They're fast, and mostly friendly........ but not exactly professional. I had explicitly instructed several pieces of furniture be dismantled and wrapped, neither was done during my move...in fact, they didn't use ANY of their tools they had available (dollies, furniture pads, pallet wrap, packing paper, etc) Instead, they insisted on moving my furniture fully assembled and unprotected, and as such caused damage not only to my furniture, leaving several if not all of my items dented, marred, or cracked, but also caused over $3.5K in damages to my brand new home itself which was otherwise in pristine condition before their arrival. There are dents in my walls and ceilings now, paint missing from hand rails on the stairs, a damaged front door frame and screen door, a cracked and dented dresser, marred and dented entertainment center, missing parts to my music production desk, electronics damaged and mishandled, several items spilled onto the floor, dark black stains left in my BRAND new carpet of the new home (they don't use protective shoe covers) Not only has almost all of my furniture been damaged, several of my electronics are now non-functioning, several dishes are broken, a few collectables are irreparably damaged, a BRAND new $2000 desk is missing parts they cant seem to find and have offered no help in replacing (after i specifically told them it was one of the items they needed to be extra careful with and wrapped for safety) On top of that, two of the three individuals got into an argument in my new home and started cursing at eachother. One of the three had to step in and say "if there's an issue communicate that? don't just jump straight to "FUCK YOU!"" I was told at the beginning of the move that they had all the tools necessary to get the job done right... and indeed they did....i saw them on the truck...they made the CHOICE themselves NOT to use them, stating things would be faster. Frankly I didnt care about fast, I wanted my belongings and my home left in the same condition they had started...PERIOD!! It would have been FAR cheaper to pay them for the extra time moving and being careful than it would be to have to replace or repair items they have damaged. It became apparent that one of the members (arranging items in the truck) was pushing the others to move faster, stating he had to be at the airport to pick up family that night at 8pm. Instead of doing a shit job protecting my belongings and making your needs #1, maybe call a different person out to complete the job if you have needs or deadlines that conflict. But DON'T expect the customer to take the brunt of your bad attitude, poor scheduling of conflicts, arguments,and inability to listen to and abide by customer needs and desires I would not, and will not, recommend these people to ANYONE that cares about their belongings or home in any way. If I could give ZERO stars, I definitely would. read more

So grateful to Matt, Will, Quinn, Chris, and whomever else is behind the scenes at John Volken Academy Movers. Moving from Baltimore to Seattle was stressful enough, when we learned from the City of Kirkland Public Works that we could not have our pods delivered, we were up a creek. Luckily JVAM responded quickly and confidently that they could unpack our household goods from the pods at the shipping terminal and deliver them to our condo. I appreciated their straight-forward billing (per hour, all the packing and tape and stuff included) and they sent three people rather than two. The logistics team was friendly and flexible. The movers, too, were friendly and professional. They jumped through the various hoops our condo HOA set up, and managed our 8-foot couch into our 1-bedroom apartment without complaint.
