This was my give it a second try place. We were seated right away. I ordered the Monte Cristo, but it was probably the most mediocre Monte Cristo I've ordered. It had no swiss cheese on it and no strawberry preserves to dip it in. The coffee is still not impressive. On the plus side, my dates chicken fried steak and eggs were great. It's not the typical place you'd expect an Emmy Award-winning actor to seek out. Nor a tourist. But that's where I found myself shortly after arriving in Phoenix. Sitting in a booth near the jukebox, listening to the conversations around me, and enjoying a simple breakfast. When I choose to eat at Joe's Diner, I didn't know that the owner, Joe Seriale was a classically trained chef. Nor that he had cooked at the Fairmont San Francisco and the Boulders Resort & Spa. Unlike a modern hipster diner trying to be retro, Joe's Diner is the real thing. A Rowe AMI jukebox machine sits against one wall silent, unplayed. Possibly forgotten. A reminder of what once was and is no longer. It's a seat yourself type of establishment. Choose from a red or green vinyl booth or a nondescript table with stacking chairs, the type you'd see at church or school. Laminated faux woodgrain tabletops featuring business cards and ads from local businesses. Old gas station signs and photos reminiscent of a day long ago. It's quiet. There's no music or TV. You can have a conversation and hear the conversations of others. One waitress running the restaurant, taking orders and busing tables. The way it used to be before big corporations and their franchises rolled in. Regulars sit in the same booth every day. Men talking about golf, AA meetings, and Bible study. Where it's not uncommon for heated argument between family members. Mother against daughter. They leave for a few minutes and then come back, order their food and enjoy their breakfast in a state of detente. Cold stares across the table. Soundless except for the clattering of silverware against plates. The food at Joe's Diner is homemade from scratch. Scratch meaning starting from nothing. You won't find a bag of Krusteaz's or Bisquick pancake mix in the kitchen. Jams, jellies, biscuits, gravy, croissants, pastries, and of course, their pancakes are made at Joe's Diner. Fun tip: They sell 3,000 pancakes a month. Twice a day they make pancake batter and three times on Sundays. They make every effort to source and use local ingredients. Their flour, coffee, cream, honey, and chorizo are all produced in Arizona. Despite being a diner, prices were high. Higher than I had expected. This was Phoenix, not San Diego. An $11 meat and cheese omelet? A $10 breakfast burrito? Visions of saving money no longer danced in my head. The best value items are the: Pancakes - $4.79 for a short stack or $5.79 for a three stack Waffles - $5.99 topped with strawberries and whipped cream French Toast - $5.99 Biscuits and Gravy - $4.49 Waffles are my go to. But today I wasn't in the mood for carbs. I wanted protein. Something light and not too heavy to tide me over for the two-hour drive to Sedona. Eggs. The two eggs special comes with seasoned homemade potatoes and choice of toast or biscuit for $7.99. Tip: Order the two egg special separately a la carte from the sides menu and save $0.22. But my hips didn't need the potatoes so I ordered an egg and toast for $3.98, not including tax. My over-medium egg was over easy. But the toast. Oh, the toast. I love a good hearty piece of bread, especially wheat or a multi-grain bread. Gluten all the way baby! The thick slices of bread were almost twice the size of a standard slice. The only bummer. It came pre-buttered, perhaps margarine or ghee. But I'd order it again, specifying to leave off butter. And send back the over easy egg. read more

I don't understand how I've lived down the street from this place for two years and have never been here before. The diner is so old school in the best way. It felt like I was back in the south with those sweet, attentive waitresses and oh-so-good cookin'. Let me tell you I haven't had breakfast sausage like this in a hot minute and the BISCUITS. I was craving the ones my Gabu (grandma) from Mississippi would make the family every morning, and I think I just found my fix. First time here. From the outside this place fits right into the neighborhood. Doesn't stand out from any of the other buildings around... but don't let that stop you from trying this joint out. I read through the reviews and there were enough five star reviews for me to make the pit stop and fuel myself up. I'm not into fancy or overly decorated interiors... so far, I'm feeling like I've just walked into a very welcoming place. The room is huge. There was a sign that read to seat myself, so I grabbed an open booth by the front window. The waitress, Paula Z, greeted me and took my drink order. When she returned with the coffee and water, she took my order. I went to the restroom for a quick bio-break and to wash up. The restroom was immaculate. Talk about clean. On this cold day, it was nice and warm in there too. Sat back down, and got myself situated with my coffee, phone, and shortly after the food came out. I ordered a bowl of oatmeal, which comes with a side of brown sugar and raisins...but I had them hold the raisins. Those things just don't jive with me. Anywho...I digress. I also ordered a banana and side of crushed pecans. The bowl of oatmeal was plentiful! The bowl was about 10" and the oatmeal was loaded to the top. It was moist (we're still allowed to say this, right?), and very delicious. It's oatmeal...it's hard to mess this up... but some people do. I did my thing with the sides, and also added a little of the creamer that was brought out for the coffee...which by the way came in one of those little metal creamer mini pitchers....that's diner material right there. The food was delicious! The coffee was good! And the glass of water was cold and refreshing. Bobby Boucher Jr. would've called this "high quality H2o". The bill came, I paid, wrote this review...and now I'm outta here! Next time I'm in this part of town and hungry, I'll remember this spot. Give it a try. You might like it..you might not. Stumbled upon this place while looking for somewhere else. Glad we did! The restaurant was pretty empty for a mid week lunch. I ordered the croissant club sandwich and it was delightful. The croissant was full of air and perfectly buttery. There was a stack of meet in the sandwich and the French fries were crispy, seasoned and delicious. The service was just ok. With such a huge space it was hard to wave anyone down for a box or to get our check. The prices were pretty high but will likely come back because the quality of the food was on point. I had a great morning today at Joe's. i had never been before and really enjoyed my breakfast. It is an old school diner atmosphere. For food I stuck with the Avocado toast with eggs. It is different here, the guac has a more sour taste. They use hot sauce in it so my guess is that is why it tasted different. It has an extra vinegar taste to it. I was not sure I really loved it enough to get it again. However, that just gives me an excuse to come back and try something else from the menu. My meal came with tomatoes and an orange slice. it was the perfect sized breakfast for me. Good coffee and they have old school diet RC. I will definitely be back. read more

I was very hesitant to go to Joe's Diner at first. I just moved across the street about a year ago and there are so many "cuter" place i would have rather gone to. One Thursday morning we went to one place and the wait was absolutely rediculous so my boyfriend was like we should go to Joe's. I was hungry so i said fine... we walked in and it was a typical diner. Nothing out of the ordinary. I sat down and the lady came to take our order and she was soooo nice. We have conversations, she always made sure our coffee was full and over all was very attentive. About the food! Okay so the food is typical diner food. So i just got the biscuits and gravey. They were just okay. I'm not a big biscuit eater so it's not saying much. But my boyfriend got an omelet, pancakes and potatoes on the side. Everything on my boyfriends plate was AMAZING. Best pancakes I've ever had. We are actually getting take out from there right now and that's how i landed here to write a review. We may become regulars there.
